    Hey Hugh, I like what you've laid out here. It's though provoking and well thought out as usual. I am a huge fan and a supporter. However..... I am a bit disappointed that you've published a story about storage and taken paid promotion from Sandisk without mentioning the "issues" with Sandisk SSDs that have affected many users and been widely reported. It feels like it's not consistent with your personal brand. Again, this isn't a gotcha or an attack. I'm just interested in your thought process here. peter annear

    The other advantage of a NAS is backing up to a second off-site NAS, to adhere to the rule of three copies of your data - two different media with one copy off-site. I keep a NAS at home and a NAS at the office. These mirror themselves in real time. That data is also backup to a paid cloud every night. But by being open to the internet, constant security vigilance from bad actors is big disadvantage.

    Yottamaster has 5 bay DAS for $149, Orico 8 bay DAS for $299, surely one of these, or one from another brand, can support RAID5 at similar speeds you're showing over USB4/Thunderbolt3/4? Recently I've bought renewed 16TB hard drives on Amazon US, Serverpartdeals and Ebay, starting at $139 for 16TB (or about $160 for a WD Ultrastar/Seagate exos/Ironwolf), so that's starting at $700 for 80TB (5 bay of 16TB) or $1100 for 128TB (8 bays of 16TB).. capacity minus one drive for RAID5 redundancy.. although I think I much prefer building a NAS, as most crucial for me is to make sure I have a remote backup of everything, just in case. So best thing if possible to synchronize 2 NAS remotely. And these new NAS can have 2 ports at 10gbit/s ethernet, which should max out at 20gbit/s if the 5-bay or 8-bay RAID5 can reach somewhere up on the way to that.. The way I see amazing USB4/Thunderbolt external SSD storage, I think having one or two external SSDs complements my 512GB internal SSD in my M1 Pro just fine for most of my editing needs, I think.. I just don't like giving Apple more money than necessary (my 14" M1 Pro was $1000-something off second hand) although it's been hard to figure out how to maximize the 20gbit/s (or even 40Gbit/s) USB4 bandwidth or Thunderbolt that are supposedly available in my laptop. My Sandisk 1TB Extreme external SSD is supposed to do USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 at 20gbit/s but it seems to only work at 10gbit/s on my M1 Pro macbook. Maybe if I find another better or more compatible SSD (probably that uses Thunderbolt..) I can get more speed for editing off the external SSD..

    I went the Synology route with a 5-bay DS1522+ currently filled with 4x20TB drives and a 10GbE network expansion card. 700MB/s read/write speeds and 54.5TB of storage space with single drive fault tolerance for $2500. Getting it all setup wasn't too hard, but also not a super simple plug-and-play solution and lacks TB3 connectivity. Would require a 10GbE home network to take advantage of those speeds too.

    Hugh, great video. Coming from a computer background, I use QNAP NAS/DAS units. Why? First all the benefits of the DAS you mention and then some. First, I can connect multiple computers to the NAS/DAS and have two work sessions going at once with the file-sharing handles by the NAS. Second, I use the NAS aspect to download my content (photo/video) to it at the end of the day so I do not have to make a local backup wherever I am at. Third, bought an additional NAS to mirror the first, so I do not have to deal with the slow, expensive cloud solutions. This is MUCH faster and much easier. Fourth, all of these applications run on the NAS which is in itself a complete computer, so I do not impact my PC's processing. I simply get a report when I want it as to what has been done. The Hybrid Backup/Sync alone is worth the money and a better solution than anything I have seen offered by a cloud service. Fifth, the NAS/DAS units offer NvMe drive support for caching, up to 16tb. A very cost-effective way to accomplish extremely fast storage. There are many other benefits I could mention, but you get the drift. Lastly, considering an SL3. Would you recommend the new Sigma 24-70 II over the Leica equivalent? Headed to Germany in two weeks and will meet with Leica to get their feedback on a number of things as well. Stay well my friend!

      Sadly Amazon AWS Deep Archive is still at $1/TB/Month with very expensive retrieval, and Google Archive Storage seems to still be $1.2/TB/Month perhaps with a bit cheaper retrieval cost.. (they haven't lowered their prices in 5 years or so it looks like, inflation I guess so) I think Microsoft Azure cold backup storage might be around the $1/TB/Month too. To backup 50TB of data on those clouds, it's still I think way too expensive though, $600/year, compared with just backing up to 2 DAS, NAS or a bunch of External HDD.

    i just got mine for nearly 900 including tax on keh! i was about to save up for the gfx100s but it was just too much, then considered the sony 61 mp camera since i’m a pixel-peeper and wanted to have the best quality. but, then i ran into this one and decided to buy. best autofocus company, high quality, good iso that can go down to 50, silent shutter, electronic viewfinder (so i don’t have to squint every time i take pics), affordable, actually screen record my screen for bts vids on youtube,and so much more. really looking forward to it’s delivery and some other photography tools i’ve picked up this week. i’m hoping deeply it’s worth my investment and time. my family thinks it’s crazy given it’s been less than a year with my first camera (the canon eos 2000d). however, i just felt the need to switch. i’m not someone older than 18 years atm, and other cameras are so expensive. i wanted to be sure i got this deal before there was a possibility i’d have to get something more expensive. as hard as it is to not have the gfx100s or another camera simply due to megapixels and knowing it’ll be ultimate quality, id rather work my way up and experiment throughout the years and keep all my camera gear in case i decide to sell my cameras later. i’m developing in photography and my business. i genuinely enjoy doing this without money, so while other people may think I’m crazy, i hope its worth it! at the end of the day, i know what i want and need in a camera and i feel this was the best option.

My daily driver from 2019 through early 2024 was my Leica SL2, but the Q3 changed my view and both of us now shoot with Leica SL3s as our base system, with Claudia returning to her a7C R when she wants to travel light, me to the Q3 (which we bought in ‘23). This was HER camera until I wanted one; she decided it made better financial sense to get the a7C R rather than a second (and more limited non -interchangeable lens Q3. For video, we rely upon a trio of LUMIX S5 II’s because they are bullet-proof reliable.

    I really truly appreciate this thorough and honest commentary, Hugh. I knew that when this camera was NOT the GX9II or any semblance of it, that I’d stick to my GX9 and Fuji X-T30ii for every day street shooting. However, I wanted a solid argument to convince me one way or another and you are the only CZcamsr to have successfully done that. Thank you. ❤

    Have you made any large prints from images that were taken using the hyperfocal distance scale on the newer V lenses? If so, do the final prints suffer from lack of critical focus? Yeah, I'm basically asking how well an 8000 dollar camera with a 3000 dollar lens works as a point and shoot, but that's just how I do my street photography.

    Hey Hugh, Always enjoy your reviews and this one is no exception. I miss the days of the 16-35mm on my DSLR and have been on the lookout for a 16mm, even if a prime (and 1.8). The fact that it is sub 1k is even better. I do have the Tamron 17-28 and use it fairly often, but I still long for that 16mm sweet spot of yore. Thanks for the review and as always, great pics! No - but it was only a loaner, so ai only had it for a short time. Have you contacted FujiFilm?

    when shooting wildlife, especially birds, reach is everything. i sold my Sony A1 and 200-600mm lens for the m4/3 2x sensor crop factor and more reach, more features (like pre-burst), light weight, and smaller size.

    I've had some Viltrox lenses. The 27mm f1.2 and 75mm f1.2 for Fujifilm are every bit as good if not better than anything offered from Fujifilm at more than double the price. Viltrox has gone to the next level and their newer lenses feel premium.

    I have the F2 50mm lanthar APO, it's by far my favorite lens. I have the the Nokton 1.2 as well, and while I love it for low light portraiture, the F2 is just so sharp and dialed in its almost no comparison. Especially on my M246.

    just bought the GFXii.. it's lighter with the 35-70 zoom than the 5D M3 is with a 24-70mm.. But it's medium format.. 8fps.. it;s a wild camera!

    "TikTok generation is not going to want to manual focus", How does anyone really know what the current generation wants or not. That's the huge Problem with the previous generations, they think they know everything. Everyone should learn how to manually focus a lens. This not just a camera for tik tok and Instagram, The Gear Don't matter crowd has all of sudden become, well that's all that matters. Those that have no need for this camera, need not apply.

    About Sony autofocus. Some lenses react very fast and accurately in autofocus ans some don't. For example my 24-105/4 is unusable in sports photography. I used to have before à Nikon Z6 with 24-120 /4 with a very good autofocus ( not speaking about black out that was a pain) .about lens quality. I tried several 100-400 Sony from friends from Sony and never been satisfied. I own a very good 200-600. The 70-200 G master V1 is also fine.

    Yes, but can it compete with the 20mm Nikon 1.8 S? It is probably the best 1.8 S lens with the 50mm. It is coming down in price as well. The 14-24mm 2.8 S Zoom is peerless as well. Personally not interested.

    • @macmac6479
      @macmac6479 Před 8 dny

      (The Plena is certainly the best 1.8 lens, then 20mm would be Nr.2)

  • @JimHester

    The E-mount version of the Viltrox 16mm f/1.8 is also pretty killer, especially paired with the A7CR/A7RV 61MP sensor.

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP Před 8 dny

      I wonder how different my reaction would have been to the lens if we’d had the e-mount version and mounted it on Claudia’s a7C R or my a7R V…
