I was hoping for the same thing. I just don’t understand this camera. They are marketing it to a TikTok crowd, but they release it with a manual focus ‘vlogging’ lens. Come on, the TikTok generation is not going to want to manual focus… And at a $1500 price point. If it had the functionality of a GX9, I could easily see that price. For what it is though, it should be sub-$1000 and at least have an auto focus lens. They really missed the mark with it. The luts/recipes whatever you choose to call them are great, but the implementation of that particular camera is a fail.

If only they had the tech to make a tiny 25mp vlog capable camera that can shoot more than 15min without overheating. 🙄
This camera looks like it was designed by a panel. Unless they're completely done with MFT which it doesn't look like, a GX9II would be the obvious choice, and it might already be in the works.

I’m with you on this, too many compromises. Blackmagic camera app on iPhone 15 pro gives me the lut features, ease of use, log profile, great ux, bright screen… zv-e1 gives me 4k 120, integrates with DJI mic, has no recording limit….but its biggest competition is its big brother the s5ii, which does basically everything it can do, plus much much more for only a little bit more money.
They provided a bunch of dealbreakers for photographers, and then turned around and provided a bunch of dealbreakers for videographers. I personally can’t imagine buying a 1500 camera just to post to TikTok. It’s like an iPhone with a bunch of extra steps.
The main thing that disappoints me is that I don’t think it’s a good beginner camera either. When just starting you might want to learn what you like and what you don’t. A general purpose camera like the s5ii is a much better starting camera because you could lean into photography. With the evf and the mechanical shutter, you’ll not run into limitations as fast. If you want to get into video, the s5ii is also perfectly capable with no recording limit and better audio support. I for one, getting my first camera, would be frustrated running into all these limitations. my iPhone can shoot 4k 60 with no time limit!
So that just leaves tik tok and instagram, and that is a big bet that enough of them want this over the Fuji or their iPhone. Even for them, I think these tradeoffs will be too much. Remember just because hey post there doesn’t mean that is all they want to do….
If anything, the s9 has convinced me the s5ii is the camera to get. It’s not that much heavier, I’m not getting a Komodo or something. The small lens negates a lot of the benefits of getting the full frame (low light will be worse, depth of field will be worse, and it doesn’t even accept an nd filter so outdoors suffers, not to mention it doesn’t have autofocus, how would one film oneself as a single creator?). Once I add a larger lens, it’s no longer pocketable…and my reservation on the size of the s5ii evaporates.
As you said, who knows? To me, they have raised red flags for every use case, while not making a convincing case for mastering any of them, while pricing it way too close to its more capable big brother, while being way more expensive than a pocket 3. If the lumix lab and live lut features come to the s5ii this will truly be a camera without a purpose.
    Great video by the way!

I am not in the "target market" for the S9 but I recently bought one and love it. My main camera is the S5M2 but I also had a GX85 for use as a light-weight walk-around camera with a few small primes. I didn't use the GX85 viewfinder, preferring to shoot from the hip with the LCD. I never used the flash or hot shoe on the GX85 and I mostly shoot stills with the occasional short 1-2 minute video clip. I traded in my GX85 for the S9 and use it exactly the same way, shooting from the hip with the LCD with a few small primes. Now I can share lenses, batteries and LUTs between my two cameras and I get much better IQ than the GX85. The S9 works well for me!

The lack of EVF, or at least an additional add on EVF. Is a deal breaker. As you point out Hugh, I am not the audience this body is aimed at. Old. Photography centered. Lack of mechanical shutter. Oh vey.
I love that this body is small and lightweight. I was hoping for an upgraded M43 body. Think of an upgraded GX8/9. I like the idea of luts. The price is right. Like the GX bodies, Panasonic has chosen to forego the Audio jac. This makes no sense for a video centric body.
I’m sorry Panasonic has forgotten me. They may make a S9 photography centered body in the future. Think of the missing EVF and mechanical shutter. I’m willing to wait. Great, in depth review as always, Hugh. I'm not the target audience either, but I have to agree that there are just too many compromises on the S9 to hit the $1500 price point. The Sony ZV-E1 is currently on sale for $1900. With a hot shoe with audio module interface, headphone jack, and mechanical shutter I think Panasonic could have made a true ZV-E1 competitor and leveraged the 6k open gate recording coupled with their streamlined straight to smart phone video format and app. At $1500 the S9 has to compete with the original A7C for $100 more, which has it's own set of compromises; but at least has an EVF (as poor of one as it is), mech. shutter, MI shoe, and headphone jack.
Also the lens? 24mm f/8 manual focus for this camera that's targeted at Gen Z? The Sony 24mm f2.8 G (or "G Whiz" as you like to call them) is still pretty small, and not terribly expensive. But if the S9 is a selfie vlogging camera why not go a bit wider with a slightly larger lens. Samyang-Rokinon have their relatively small 18mm f2.8 for about $300, and Viltrox have their absolute bargain $160 20mm f2.8 available on Sony E and Nikon Z. This seems like a missed opportunity to bring budget lenses into the L Mount alliance. Or maybe such makers are too far beneath Leica and they'd never go for it?

  • @jaegerschtulmann
    @jaegerschtulmann Před 3 měsíci +16

As you pointed out, I think those tik-tokers this camera is aimed at have an easier system that fits in their pockets, their phone. If only Panasonic had kept the hot shoe, mechanical shutter and headphone jack this camera could have been a home run as these features take minimal space, do not cost much and they would have made a huge difference to photographers too! Kudos to Panasonic for creating the LUT app however, this will hopefully encourage other camera manufacturers to incorporate "in-camera processing" (other than Fuji of course)

    • @jaegerschtulmann
      @jaegerschtulmann Před 3 měsíci

@@jeanchindeko5477 "without going for something bulky" that's one the contradiction of this system IMO, it quickly becomes bulky even with the f1.8 primes from panasonic, who at the moment of writing this don't have compact f2.8 lenses like let's say sony. The only compact lenses on the L-mount are the sigma i-series (mostly excellent); however they are not so good for video (stepping AF). The second contradiction is that potential users of this system (according to panasonic of course) do not care about image quality that much, after all it's just a tik tok video that will be viewed in a small screen! If Panasonic however, had not restricted the photography centric features of this camera, it could have easily competed with let's say, fuji's x100VI, provided it was launched with some pancake or short AF f2 lenses.

I think I'll fall in love with the S9...
I have the S5II and a number of lenses. But I still have a lot of MFT gear. I sold my E-PL10 and kept the GX9. But it is the EVF which bothers me. Yes, the EVF bothers me.
The simplicity of the E-PL10 with a small lens (PanaLeica 15mm 1.7) has produced a myriad of favourite intimate images in my private life. The clear distinction from an S5II (or OM-1 at that time, even from the E-M5 III) makes a lot of sense to me.
So, if combined with the Sigma 45mm 2.8 and perhaps the new 18-40mm zoom, I can get a set with the image quality and autofocus of the S5II which fits next to the diapers in my backpack - boy oh boy - my MFT gear is up for sale!!!
And I have been shooting first film then DSLR now mirrorless for the past 20+ years ever since being a teenager. So, I'm not generation smartphone or social media. The Olympus PEN Lite series helped me overcome old needs, shoot more from the hip, trust the camera and was such a liberating personal experience and development. Still, on many days the S5II with the Sigma 50mm 1.4 DG DN are my companions. So, one doesn't lose anything but gets something more in return.
I think I'll get the S9 in green later this year.

The S9 is for me a ridiculous abject failure. My go everywhere glued-on camera is a Fuji X-E3. Why in G-ds name did Panasonic not include a proper digital viewfinder? I would have immediately put the S9 on my must have list. If Fuji built an affordable 26mp camera with a brilliant sensor and included a (for the time) decent digital viewfinder with good focus peaking for we manual focus old guys, what cerebral vacuum focus (pardon the pun) group thought this was a good idea. If this had a tilt screen and viewfinder (especially an articulated one like the GX series), it'd be a fantastic platform for adapting rangefinder glass
Electronic shutter only would be quite a justifiable compromise for what would then be an undercover shooter of sorts (whether in understated black, or harmless friendly red-green-or-blue). As a long term Sigma FP user, I don't believe that this is n ecessarily better, contrary to your conclusion. Sure, it has IBIS, but will it ultimately remove the need for some form of secondary stabilisation? Having owned the S5ii, I'm not quite sure. But then again, I'm doing me. The Sigma FP however is very similar, albeit as you rightly pointed out, aimed at different audience. As such, I believe that the lack of a mechanical shutter will ultimately be a barrier to it's widespread adoption as the banding issue is something which is a real annoyance. Much more than I could have possibly anticipated and nearly leading me to sell the FP many times. It sneaks up on you and isn't necessarily obvious when reviewing the images via the built in screen or viewfinder. Yes, viewfinder. And hotshoe, and headphone jack, all of which (except the hotshoe) are available as options if you need them and thus ensuring that the camera has the potential to grow with your needs. Plus, and I look forward tto the inevitable comparisons come out, I'll wager that the dynamic range on the Sigma will be better, based on my comparison with my previous S5ii. Still, I'll be looking forward to the 14-40mm lens when it comes out, hope it's a decent performer.

WHY is there NO LEICA EVF compatible hot-shoe on the S9 ?? I guess they feared Leica can not produce enough of them...
the other only big no-go of the S9 - no audio out other the micro-hdmi. a port which could be thrown out as USB-C could handle it all. The S9 could have been a fantastic L-mount camera making people think about the Q3 value...
But anyway: compared to my Lumix GX1 the S9 is a tank... . Hope Pana get its act together for a true small up-to-date MFT Lumix. Then even Leica might give us one with a clean interface...
The sad truth is: neither Panasonic nor Leica have a clue what the future of photography will be like and how to get there first. Even more Leica is loosing its bet on selling legacy as generation smartphone has its own "iconic" "photos"... . Selling an entry level S9 for 1500 bucks will NOT attract enough customers to save their future. For sure.
How long will it take those companies are willing to canabilize their higher-end product lines by offering feature-euqal entry level cams? Bet they will be surprised that they will sell more high-end cams later as those are sold on build-quality and ease-of-mind features like weather sealing...
PS: That the bundled lens is fixed f8 and manual focus - a bad joke. As their own MFTs GX Vario PZ 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 for video, G 14mm f2.5 and G 20mm f1.7 for stills show what was possible when Pana was at its best...

I take your point. Then again, substituting one opinion for another absent data is only that. Thanks for weighing in!

This is Panasonics attempt to get the Samsung S24 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro Max users to buy a "FF" camera.

I can’t decide - is this an expensive Nikon Z30, or a grown-up Ricoh GR?

    This cam makes no sense.
Overly complicated (LUTs!!!) for the beginner /smartphone upgrader its targetting, while not offering the meaningful updates even they should expect from a nearly €2k update over their smartphone once you factor even the cheapest lens (no EVF, no mech. shutter, video record limits).
Yet for the more experienced user and colour grader seeking an alternative to the x100 its form before functio: no grip (this isnt an x100 or x-e, the lenses get big quick), absent evf and shutter, lack of controls, f8 only pancake, amd while the LUTs have potential - applying presets to Raws and editing further is preferable.
Its the ZF all over again with Panasonic undecided who it is trying to appeal to.
For beginners it should have taken a far simpler approach to the LUTs. Offer curslated LUTs from known influencers and camera profrssionals rather than a blank slate and "have at it colour grading noobs, do your worst" attitude. Leave that for models up the foodchain. And use a M4/3 or ApSC chip to help with the overheating, video record times, fit in an EVF and shutter. And a fixed lens, whether zoom or prime. I dont know, like an uodated LXII for half the price.
Panasonic has sucedded in one thing, though. It has made the Fuji x100vi and x-e look even better. The film sims work because they are restricted in number, simple to customise and the film recipe community has established itself organically by itself. Perfect for jpeg shooting and a fun photographic experience, while RAW shooters get limitless possibilities in post.
Anyone remember what happened to the Zeiss ZX1 that came with Lightroom built in? Exactly. It hardly kickstarted a new era in in-camera joeg creation.

I remember the ZX-1 well, as I had high hopes for it and was one of the first to have it in hand. I was one of the first to identify its shortcomings, too. The S9 is NOT the Zx-1, and S9 product planners seem to have applied a number of lessons learned from the Zeiss experience. I’m still playing with the S9 even though I am not the target audience. It would behoove all of us to have a little intellectual humility and remember that we do not have access to the data the product team does - and that the target is not always where the arrow hits. 😊🖖🏻
