Wenger, after 2004 until his departure, probably overachieved given the resources he had. As a United fan, it pains me to say it but he was an incredible manager and a top man! Who knows what he could have achieved elsewhere.

Imagine selling your best players literally every single year, largely to YOUR RIVALS. Vieira, CAshley Cole, Fabregas, Nasri, Clichy, Sagna, Adebayor, Toure, Hleb, Ramsey, Sanchez, van Persie, Alex Song, Vermaelen, even Henry. He did the best with what he could. Still managed to play one of the most beautiful football in Europe, churned out talent after talent for the football world, unlucky not many trophies in that time but I wouldn't change a thing going back 20 years. The new stadium was a major financial setback but it's the foundation for the more ambitious future.

Arsene has gone for the strawman. His stubbornness was the biggest factor. His primary motivation at times was to prove critics wrong - e.g., that he could win the league without a proper holding midfielder or goalkeeper. Especially between 2006 and 2011 or so, it wasn't like a full-blown overhaul was necessary. It was just a case of one or two missing parts. They win the league in 2008 with a better goalkeeper than Manuel Almunia. The only proper holding midfielder they've had since Vieira and Gilberto is Thomas Partey. There was a season that one good central defender cost them - that season that Chris Samba was mentioned a lot. I never once thought the drought was a money/investment issue. It was down to Wenger being utterly stubborn.

Many people will never understand the work involved behind the scene of rebuilding a new stadium as well in its financial burden aspect while also keeping the team afloat, if Wenger have left during the period, Arsenal will probably fall into pothole and will take very long to climb back to be even competing not mentioning clinching the title. It’s the love for Arsenal that keep Arsene in it for so long. He could have left and just focus on winning for other team.

Cause that was the owners objectives for years, get top 4 and Wenger was guiding the club through transition. They were the 8th highest spenders between 2006-2012 and they had the best net spend out of the top 25 highest spenders in the world. That shows you what their priorities were.
Arsenal really should’ve dropped out of the top 4 way sooner than they did. Even between 2013-2018 they were 5th highest spenders. So that’s 12 seasons where they were hitting above expectation on paper.

@@imneverwrongsometimestruthlies Just giving you the facts. If their investment doesn’t match what fans expect, should they keep expecting the same thing and putting them on the same playing field as the likes of Chelsea, United and City at the time? Athletico’s trophy record compared to Madrid and Barca doesn’t stack up at all so surely that’s an off comparison. Arsenal won 4 FA Cups between 2014 and 2020, doesn’t mean they’re good enough to win consistent titles.

    A) No Arsene, you didn't "create that level of expectation" - Arsenal had massive history winning Titles & were always the 3rd biggest club in the country before you even joined.
    B) The main contributing factor was you got completely surpassed in the modern game while being unable to organise a defence to save your life.

We brought in some class players like Alexis and Ozil and some shrewd buys like Cazorla. I blame a huge part of the downfall on Gazidis as well always got to hold those tenures jointly accountable . Wenger put us in a great financial position and his hands became more tied near to the end as they tried to soften the blow of his handover. Ironically the power models of club hierarchy’s has shifted a lot now since the Fergie and Wenger days and what a mess United had become also , clubs like Chavski trying to find an identity and recruiting ‘yes man ‘ coaches . You have former arsenal players who know of the arsenal values in high places Edu , Arteta , Mertesacker and Wilshere . It makes a big change from hiring crooks with super agent friends as ‘director of football ‘ types , or blindly recruiting players based on a data algorithm without considering if they are right for the club .
