- What do you get when you toss the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 and Bullit variants into a blender? The answer is the Ford Mustang Mach 1. The Mustang Mach 1 is a high-performance muscle car that fills in the gap between the Mustang GT and the monstrous GT500 in Ford's muscle car lineup. What makes the Mach 1 work? How does it handle on the track? Carlos Lago explains in our 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 review.
The 2021 Mustang Mach 1 comes standard with many of the performance features that are optional on the Mustang GT and gets a 20-horsepower bump over the standard GT (up to 480 hp from 460 hp). Under the hood, the Mach 1 uses a 5.0-liter V8 engine that was upgraded for the Mustang Bullitt. The Mach 1's engine is not quite on the same level as the discontinued 8,250-rpm 5.2-liter V8 engine from the Shelby GT350, but in fairness, no engine matches that standard.
The exterior of the Mustang Mach 1 is what we've come to expect from a Mustang. It looks aggressive and purposeful, and the front grille with the Mustang logo is a crowd-pleaser. Additionally, we are big fans of the Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires (included in the optional handling package) and marvel at just how cool the wheels look on the Mach 1.
The Ford Mustang is an American muscle car icon, and the Mustang Mach 1 is dead set on keeping it that way. The effortless balance of track-ready performance and driving excitement makes the 2021 Mustang Mach 1 one of the best Mustang variants on the market. This is Edmunds' review of the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1.

Mustang Mach 1? No hyphen. Mustang Mach-E? Hyphen. 🤷
It’s actually the Ruststang Mock-Me...
Actually it’s “Mustang” Mach-E
@@ItsAlive111 r/whooooooosh
I prefer Mach E.
More G forces.
And?
The first S550 to combine a durable manual transmission and a durable V8 engine in the same package.
Completely agree 👍
Agreed, flat plane cranks sound awesome BUT 1. They’re always short on torque. 2. Worst of all, the harmonic vibration slowly destroys a very expensive engine every time you turn the key. It becomes a toy you rarely drive.
@@wrzl1675 No, it doesn't.
Not too mention a track monster. This car is special and people don’t realize it
@Snappy Chat - Ticking Problems are Easily Solved
When I grew up, American muscle was affordable for a blue collar guy. Now, it's like another house payment.
Just depends on the market where you live. I just bought a 2021 GT, 6mt, PP1 with 20 miles on it for less than the price of an Accord.
@@c.f.1133 Where do you get your cars, the black market?! 😂
@@c.f.1133 that's a GT pretty much everybody can do that - to his point the price of the Mach 1 is ridiculous for bolt on parts.
@@c.f.1133 Where? Please let me know and I'll buy 2. Please reply :)
Like the old saying - "Youth is wasted on the young." 😑
I went with a used GT350 instead of the Mach 1, the other day. Gotta hear that 8200 rpm.
came over here when Carlos left Motortrend channel
keep up the good work
🙌
Instead of saying 5.2L V8 every time, just say Voodoo vs Coyote. We know we're car guys 😎🏁
Love this car. Hard to believe all these years later, the Mustang is still one of the best bang for the buck cars out there.
Great video, thanks
As always another awesome and informative video by Edmunds and Carlos
🙌
My local dealer had one of these and it sold for $68k. That’s crazy.
There is one on AutoTRADER Canada $98,388 stupid money for a Mustang but then again they are trying to get $200,000 for GT 500's up here when you can get a Redeye Charger Hellcat for $105,000.
@@bikingD because gt500 been around how long and ford always been in the market of track n Street races
@@malibufitness615 Huh so you think a new GT500 is worth $200,000 😂😂😂
@@bikingD yeah actually because it handles a track very well and street daily
@@bikingD like saying is a Mercedes-Benz s65 amg worth the same price and it's variable on both track and street 🤷🏾♂️
The world needs more Carlos! Great video and what a car!

The question is "Is the Mach 1 that much better than a Mustang GT PP2?" I agree, this is not a substitute for the departing GT350.
what makes the GT350 better?
@@Ford_Raptor_R_720hp_V8 A bespoke engine, Shelby specific suspension upgrades, and a car designed to be a cohesive package...not a parts bin car from other Mustangs.
@@TXBlackKnight88 - the advantage of the Cross-Plane Crankshaft are, Engine Smoothness, Better Low-End Torque, and Better Reliability.
Suspension wise, the Mach 1 Mustang is the best Handling Mustang ever produced.
the Mach 1 comes with Rev-Matched Downshifting, the GT350 doesn't.
I like the Electronic Gauge Cluster over the Analog Gauges.
With Minor Tweaks I can get 540 bhp, with better low-end torque, with a Tremec 6-speed, mated to a Twin-Disc Clutch.
@@Ford_Raptor_R_720hp_V8 GT350R begs to differ on the "best handling" claim. Also... modifying cars becomes a who can spend more game. The real question still stands...is a Mach 1 worth the price difference between it and a GT PP2 car. The GT350 was worth the difference because it was special...is the mach 1 truly special? I would say no because it's a parts bin car. Other will say yes because of other reason. It's a real question real buyers should consider.
Edit. Didn't know ford axed the PP2 package in 2021. Makes sense because the Mach 1 comes in at $11k+ higher than the PP2 car if you get the upgraded track package.
@@TXBlackKnight88 - a JLT Cold Air intake, and an E85 tune with E85 has already seen a 49 WHP gain and 35 WTQ on the Dyno. I'll put Ford Performance 47 lb injectors on it, and a JMS PowerMAX V2 FuelMAX Fuel Pump Voltage Booster, for the Fuel Pump.
that's minimal Tuning with substantial gains
No mustang, not even the gt500 will ever sound as good at the 5.2L Voodoo motor!
Best Mustang ever made, GT350\R....
Great job Carlos 👍🏿
🙌
Always nice to watch the boy Carlos.
I fail to see the fascination, but I don't find boys attractive in that way.
@@Ford_Raptor_R_720hp_V8 I can understand that. His presentation style isn’t for everyone. When I say “the boy” it’s like a way of saying “my man”. It’s a positive term, but not quite affectionate in the way you may be thinking I’m using it.
I have a 2020 PP2 Mustang & I'm telling you one of the best American cars you will ever buy..🇺🇸
Your presentation is very easy to accept. Chill. That's a huge plus in why I watch anything. Thank you. [later: Fighter Jet Grey. Cooool]
🙌
You guy's should compare this with the camaro 1le.
Carlos, those fake fog lights do actually have a function. You can pop them out for additional cooling on the track.
No additional cooling required per ford, and that would increase front end lift. Would need a larger vent in the hood for the air to escape.
@@bobbob-jw6zf if its hot on the track the extra cooling will be worth it. now of course it will effect the aerodynamics but you won't even notice it, you are not driving an F1 car.
@@abde4645 Hood flutter has been a problem on these cars for years. This would make it worse.
I was going to say the same thing...funny way to start video when they are fuctional and made to be removed by the owner for additional cooling.
Saw one of these on a car carrier with other new Fords headed for my local dealership. It was the same color and looked awesome. Excited to see and hear about the Mach 1!
Great review....Pick up my Mach-1 next week but can’t get the performance pack over here in the uk ☹️had to settle for the appearance pack in fighter jet grey but with the manual gearbox 😎

nice review. could you do a review of the standard ( non HP ) Mach 1 for mostly street use . cheers tom
The M1 is an incredible value. Track car performance for 55-65K. Unique badging and aero. Beast of a car.
I'm going to Willow Springs next week with my 2021 Mach 1 and I'm so excited!
The big track? What kind of times were you able to get out of it? Is it the 6 speed? How much track experience do you have at Willow? Inquiring minds want to know. I want either one of these or a lightly used Gt350. Trying to decide. Thanks
@@reevinriggin3570 We were on the Big Willow track and they didn't time us.
Can you let us know how much you paid? Just came back from a dealership an hour ago….doing research. Thanks
Mach1 has to be a Manual Transmission... it needs the 6 Speeds to down shift in to the corners, and throw them out on the exit of those corners. I don't have to be the fastest I have to be more engaged to the driving experience. 👦🏻👍🏻🏎🏁
I completely agree.
@@KamikazeSOF2 Yes I miss the 6 Speed Manual Transmission, and I dread the day this option won't be available
Wow the TV sleeze of Carlos Lago is actually the light/casual choice compared to the newer youtubers. That's my version of a compliment btw.
Great review Carlos but was expecting more shots of the car exterior wise some sideways action but overall good review about the driving experience
Absolutly loving all this Carlos content! I would much rather have the GT350 over this. RIP flat crank Voodoo ; ( Really crazy you need to pay over $50k to get a decent manual transmission on a Mustang with the Tremec. I prefer the PP2 wheels design to this Hyundai pattern. Would have loved to see the no lift shift demonstrated on a manual equipped car
I've driven nothing better than my pp2 Mustang such a great handling car truly is a sports car now..
GT350 gone, because the serious oil consumption problem,This 5.0 is more reliable its been here for 10 years now and is doing great.
@@jnagime I had to top the oil ZERO times in my GT350 in the nearly 8200 miles I’ve had it. I went to the track and autoX in it. I checked the oil every 1,000 miles and then eventually every 1,500 miles. It was always near max.
Maybe I got lucky though cuz I’ve heard of some lemon engines…
I see Carlos I upvote.
Wish we could have heard about the manual on the street since that's where the vast majority of these cars will be.
I kinda wish they would have painted the hood stripe with a functional hood scoop added. I also think they should have put in lights in the grill to give it the Mach 1 look. The last touch I would have liked to see was the old Mustang logo in the grill, like the 69. Then it would it would have been a fitting tribute to the 69 model. It looks good, but I think those additions would have been a nice touch and a nod to the old Mach 1. Just an opinion. It does look good.
Keep hearing concerns on longevity of the Voodoo compared to the coyote. Maybe not as as exotic, but this checks more boxes for me. In the 6speed guise at least.
Dang that color is soooooooo gooooood! I bet it'll look better without the vinyls.
want one !!!
It must have a “Manual Transmission” option for me to even look at it.
9:00 no more Cup 2s for me, Roebling Road Raceway will cord tires. I heard many talk about it. At least no more expensive tires for Roebling Road Raceway.
We ordered a Grabber Yellow Mach 1 3 weeks ago. Hope to get it before snow this year.
Didn’t they stop building Mustangs due to the chip shortage?
@@EdDale44135 When we ordered, we were told it would be about July or August to receive a Mach 1. That was Apr. 12. I haven't talked to the dealer lately, but what I read recently was production was to stop for about a week. But the same applies to many other brands and models. By the way, Ford is only building a Mach 1 for customers, if there is an order placed by a legitimate customer. Dealer stock will come after those orders are all filled. So while customers keep placing orders, there will not be any for dealer stock.
Hoping we get it before snow in MN.
Did you get the manual?
@@philspaghet Of course we got a manual trans. When we bought our '06 GT, were in a lot that had over 10 AT and no manuals . A very young salesman tried to sell me on the AT and finally my wife said to him, Automatics are for pussies. He left as he knew he was not making this sale.
Just found out today, our Mach 1 is on the build schedule for July 26. We hope that happens!
Just curious what kind of lap time you put down with that Mach 1. I realize you were not 10/10 pushing hard, but you had to look to see what kind of time you were generating. What was your best time? I just want to know what that car may be capable of with no mods and a decent driver.
Bought my new 2019 350r for 69k. It was 2 weeks before the discontinued announcement. I've been offered 80k for it.
Mach 1 has nothing on the 350r
don't be a hater. its like saying your gt350r has nothing on a 911 turbo s . who cares.
Actually, it has the same transmission and mostly same suspension fromGT350....For 20K less....
Good luck on getting the engine warranty.
"And if you don't like this video let us know in the comments below.." How can I unlike this when it's got Carlos Lago it
There is no NA factory Mustang presently worth this kind of money IMO. It will take many months, if ever, for dealers to discount the Mach like the GT PP. I picked up my PP2 for $38k ... the Mach is not worth $20k more. It has coolers and a better trans (gear spacing) for tracking the car. The extra 20hp is available to anyone willing to get a tune.
This car is pretty special and people are dogging on it because they are GT350 fan boys. Those cars vibrate themselves to death and have oil consumption issues. They got better and the 19+ cars bud I think this is a superior package. You pair the coyote with the manual of the GT 350 or else option for the automatic and you have yourself a monster. Throw a blower or twin turbos on a Mach one with a 10 speed auto and it will smoke a GT500. These cars have been into the 7’s with a stock motor. Also, I think this thing looks better than a GT 350. The spoiler is sick, the stock wheels are sick and also the front bumper is incredible looking. The only thing to GT 350 has on this car is sound but the coyote also is one of the better sounding v8’s out there.
With a 5.o lt. I rather get a gt with all the goodies. I mean: the fun of the mak1 is that 5.2. Love the gt350 for it.
GT350 > Mach 1. Has the 5.2L. Enough said.
yawn
@@wimbrow1 ok...?
Please Make a Mustang Mach 1 and GT350 comparison video. How does the voodoo mpg vs a coyote?
I'd go with the green Bullitt 6speed manual
No Tremic mt tho :/
Uh oh. The last Carlos Lago vid I watched was a Hemi Orange Dodge Challenger SRT, which I almost bought.
Now this Mach 1 with the 10speed. Btw this is Ford's answer to why they couldn't put the 10speed into the GT350 5.2. The way this one roars, I'm good with the 5 oh.
1LE vs Mach 1?
I have a 2019 1LE. That is the comparo I am interested in. The Mach 1 has a Torsen while the 1LE has the e-diff. Also not sure if the Mach 1 has PTM modes. Needs to be a head to head.
@@danielmembrillo6472 I’d rather have the torsen. While it’s limited in low traction environments compared to the E diff... it’s far more reliable and easier to maintain. Subaru combined the two for the center diff... an electro mechanically actuated clutch with helical geared differential in the DCCD. Best of both worlds really.
No threat to your Camaro
What ford should have done with this was put a 500hp ecoboost V6 maybe with mild hybrid assist in this just to make it more different from a mustang performance pack as this car is basically just all retro badge......would have been a bit lighter with the ecoboost I reckon too
That's actually a great idea. At least Ford may be able to justify the price then.
Whoa I didn’t realize Carlos was still with Edmunds
Seriously, what are the chances? It's hilarious that two *identical looking dudes* (Carlos and Jason Cammisa) do the same job. There *HAS* to be a collab.
Fuck they do really look alike 🤣🤣
I don’t understand why people say this isn’t “special”. Quite possibly the last 5.0 N/A V8 (making near the majestic 100hp/liter mark), 6-speed and a lot of suspension upgrades for a relatively “affordable” price in 2021 makes it seriously special in my eyes. I love the GT350 and its Voodoo motor but the Coyote is much more proven and can also generate special noises.
i like the mach 1 but there isnt much that can compete with that 8000+ rpm redline paired to the tremec manual
Why is it that nobody talks about removing those fog light covers to let in extra air? Nobody ever mentions that anymore. Has anyone done a test with and without the covers to see if there is a difference in performance? I'd like to know if there is more power to be gained by removing them. Dodge did that with their Hellcat and it seem to work very well. I'm looking forward to seeing a test with those covers removed. Please keep me informed, thanks.
Which one is better?
Mach 1 or Mustang GT
If it came in Rapid Red, I’d have already ordered it.
Always looking for an excuse.
We need comparison videos of this vs the camaro 1le.
well first off I'm not sure that's a fair comparison, second you can't even order a Camaro Chev not taking orders
@@2blackbikes other than not being able to order. The Mac 1 handling pack and as 1le are the most comparable with the two.
So those fake fog light plates can be removed and made functional for extra cooling just so you know for future reference
what were your speeds ?
You could have included laptimes comparing it to a gt350’s, that way your audience can see how well the two cars compare.
Ford didn't allow any reviewers to truly track the press Mach 1s. They didn't want a direct comparison between the Mach 1 and GT350/Dark Horse. The Mach 1 is that good, that Ford had to put a bridle on reviewers.
In Northern California they are asking 80k. You gotta really love mustangs to pay that over a 65K ZL1.
So what is the main reason that Ford did away with the GT350? I really wanted to save up to get one.
This may be the most reliable of the mustangs and that's everything to me now. Young people don't think about the headaches down the road when making an already terrible investment like this (terrible in a good way).
is this all wheel drive ?
I have a 2022 mach 1 with handling package 10speed automatic fully loaded racaro leather magniride suspension.
Awww Boo should have reviewed the Manual.
Guy is too chill driving the car around that track.
automatics
so is this available as a ragtop?
if not, then what is the highest performance mustangeconvertible
Nah, coupe only, this is a track car not a lazy cruiser. Convertibles are overrated tbh
Nice mustang 👌
So its pretty well a limited version of a GT?
I remember this guy from somewhere like motor trend. anyone know apart from Edmunds where he was?
Im happy with my gt premium. Id rather spend money on a car that holds value like a shelby over this if i wanted to step up.
Isn't there a more options out package which you cannot get the automatic transmission for? But I forget what it is but I mean who would order this with an automatic anyway
i would and i did the 10r80 is a god sent for me as i'm a disabled vet with feet i can barely walk on. Would i rather have had a manual yes, but that was not an option for me. So different is not always bad. Its a great car to drive and it looks great.
Impressive mach 1!!
The oil consumption issue scared me off from buying a GT350. I owned a 2011 GT. It never used any oil, nor never had any issues at all. In the 8 years that I owned it, it went in for an air bag recall, oil changes and new tires. Nothing else. Typical Ford the gas gauge was screwy and the dash rattled. The 5.0 Mustangs are solid cars. Ford was tired of being sued so they dropped the Vodoo engine.
I own a GT350 and it has Zero oil consumption issues. That is a misconception that effects only a small percentage. I do wait until the car is up to operating Temps b4 going above 7000 rpm's. I do change oil after 4000 mile intervals.
@@timothycc711 What year Tim?

Can the automatic simulate a good old fashioned 4-speed? I want to feel the dig like an old badly shifted clutch!
No, you just click paddles to shift gears, just get the 6 speed, modern cars have super light clutches anyways
1:45 not true you can pull them out and the left one is directly in front of the air box basically making a ram air intake.
The more I see this Mustang being priced at $60,000+, the more I get happy with my purchase 2 years ago of a brand new 2019 base GT at $33,000 (rebated).
I can imagine the gt350 at this price because of the exotic flat plane which is rare for the price.
But +$30,000 more for basically the same car with a retuned engine and suspension is a little too much.
Don’t get me wrong, it is a VERY nice car overall. Price is also ok, specially compared to other cars like the Lexus IS 500, BMW M. But the the base Mustang GT is just sooooo much a bang for the buck car.
Hi Carlos,
How does the Mach l performance compares to the Camaro SS1LE?
It loses
@@walterraulerson2986 😂 without testing
You are judging it's daily drivability while in it's track setting. Silliness. It's actually great for daily driving and not at all punishing or noisy if you have it in the appropriate settings for daily driving at which point it's actually very quiet and comfortable. It can do it all.
You a chevy guy carlos
Nah, he's a huge Mustang fan.
It probably won’t blow engines as frequent as the gt350!
The only demerit that can be levelled against the Mach-1 is the price point which is a little too close to GT350 land
I do think that this should have been the GT pp2
Just like its nemesis from Chevrolet the SS 1LE Camaro this is track Mustang that has more suspension and more grip van engine which means you can drive it at 9/10th without getting into all kinds of trouble where are the more powerful Mustangs and Camaros can overwhelm their tires suspensions and drivers.
One of the small things I like about this is the front end which I think is the best looking out of all S550 Mustangs the lower front valance doesn't have the weird matte black plastic strakes of the GT350 or the attempt to graft Ford GT styling language onto a Mustang which in my opinion doesn't work it's cool without being weird
Mustang might be for the track and the streets but not for everyone. Mach1 with a handling pack is nearly 70 grand now.
I recently bought a Boss 302 Laguna Seca after doing a ton of research. Honestly this car was just way overpriced. I compared this with a 2017+ GT350 and the 350 kinda easily had it beat. Ended up going with the Boss because of the cool collectability and the fact they only made 500 in black and red.
The GT350R still way more car than this.
YoU DoNt sAy
Except its not. Car and Driver just did lightning laps at VIR and this clocked a faster time than the 350R.
Wonder how many people will actually track race it.
I had to take a second look, I thought Ryan Reynolds was doing car reviews! Even your voice is close. Great review.

in the price only maybe
Camaro SS 1LE vs Mustang Mach 1. Someone do it. Please.
Dealer markup want like $60k, I prefer getting an older gt350 with a scream
Was hoping for a "shaker" hood.
.... you'd think...

Needs a shaker hood. Just like the 69.
7:40. You know your back tire is spinning backwards?
Great car, great review. Still have a soft spot for that gt350 w/ manual though.
The 2005-2009 and 2010-2012 design, is the best ever.
I prefer the 13/14 myself.
The exterior looked great but the interior is 🤢🤮 The new mustangs look great inside and good out. I actually really liked the Camaro before they updated it to cause epileptic seizures.
Funny for me the number 1 reason to get a Mach 1 over a GT PP2 is... the Tremec manual transmission. So I would definitely pass on this car.
Well the PP2 doesn't even exist anymore so the option would be this or a PP1.
Great car but too expensive. The manual in these should be standard on GT model. Stay away from manual in Mustang GT as it is defective. Who gets a ten speed auto in a Mustang? Come on Carlos
Do not like the livery, would tear that all off day one. And I don't like the front grill with the weird fake foglight holes. Bullitt had the best cleanest look. Love that you can get the Tremec though. All I wanted was a Bullitt with a Tremec and basically they did it in it's base form, sadly the wheels on the base are ugly. Bit pricey for a 5.0. No way I buy this in Auto, not way.
Had to cut the video off about the 10th time GT350 was mentioned. Review the car that is at hand - touch on GT350 sure, but don't harp on it.
