    The new Mustang Mach 1 is what we call a "parts bin special." Sometimes that's bad, but in this case, that's very very good. It has the 480HP Coyote V8 from the BULLITT, the subframes, transmission, and suspension tuning from the GT350, and it has the cooling capacity of the GT500. Depending on how you slice it, it's either the best Mustang GT ever made, or it's a Shelby GT350 without the engine warranty claims. (Don't be mad at us, Shelby people - we love the Voodoo engine, but we all know it's problematic in practice). Optional equipment on our tester includes leather trimmed Recaro bucket seats, the "Handling Package," and Bang & Olufsen stereo.
    Ford provided the vehicle, insurance, and a tank of fuel for this review.

    So happy Ford did this car. It’s got the good manual transmission, the awesome suspension/steering from the GT350, and it’s more affordable than the GT350 was. Winner for me. So much better than a GT.

      So much better? I know the mt82 isn’t the greatest but with rebates I can get roughly 2 stripper gt’s for the price of one mach 1, which will likely not have any rebates, rather some ADM. for near shelby prices, I want the dedicated shelby powerplant and prowess that put that car at the top of everyone’s dream list for the last 5 years.

    Talking about people not using their mirrors, I used to drive my Corvette to work daily because it was more fun then my Lincoln, I used to park out in boonsville at work, one day I cam out and found someone parked so close to my car that I couldn't open the door without hitting their mirror on the drivers side. so I simply closed their mirror and went about my day.
    a few days later I saw this same suv go past and the drivers side mirror was still closed, so in all that time they had never noticed the mirror was closed, or if they did they never made an attempt to open it back up. I am going with they didn't ever use their mirrors and when they changed lanes they did it out of blind leaps of faith.

I got to spend a couple days at Road Atlanta with the Mach 1 back in April, and I was thoroughly impressed with the accuracy of the auto rev-match, even when trying to fool it by going 5-3 downshift at turn 10A. It got the revs right every time. And yes, I agree: this is a wonderful mix of GT350 and Coyote goodness. And the fighter jet gray is an awesome color.

    I owned a GT350 from new in 2016 to 2018, used daily for business and pleasure, covered 52k miles during that time, and whilst I loved the car it was not without fault.
    In that time it needed 2 new long blocks (1 @ 3.5kmls and 1 @ 32kmls) & new gearbox (@ 38kmls) all fitted under warranty, Ford dealership service was poor at best, and the engine used 1qt of oil every 500-750mls (I kept an average of 10qts in that trunk at all times) without fail for the entire time I owned it, even with the new engine rebuilds.
    The only mods/upgrades I did to my car were resonator delete and MGW shifter kit (highly recommend). Aside from using it every day the best road trips were tail of the dragon and East Coast to West Coast and back in 5 days.
    As I say, I loved that car but it always felt a bit too delicate to me and I felt like I was left high and dry with Fords customer service during my ownership.
    Love this iteration of Mustang, and this looks like the one to buy, but I won’t be returning to Ford again sadly after my ownership experience.

      I'm right there with you with beyond atrocious customer service from Ford. I had been a loyal Ford fan since my first car (08 V6 Pony Package). My last one was a '16 5.0 that turned out to be a lemon and was eventually purchased back by Ford. Prior to them buying it back from me, I was:
      -lied to about "services rendered" by two different Ford dealerships (my dashcam showed that the car sat in the same spot for three days with no one touching it)
      - had frivolous "repair attempts" conducted so that they could profit off of them by cheating out Ford HQ ( for instance told me it was an intake manifold issue, which I knew for a fact it wasn't)
      - a service tech drove my car 83 miles even though it was in for a potential engine issue, and so much more. I eventually found a dealer over an hour away from my location that was willing to take a real look at my car. Turns out that the engine was actually chewing itself up (the notorious coyote "tick" is quite real....), resulting in severe pitting of the camshaft, metal in the cylinder heads, and much more. A repair was done under warranty, but the issue returned only a month later. Seeing as my car had been at a dealer for "repairs" for a cumulative total of 6 months, I decided to part ways with it.
      Once again, what should have been a simple process turned out to be a 2 month long ordeal. All Ford had to do was use a simple formula to determine the buy-back price (due to being in CA, and which they eventually did), but the lemon "rep" I was dealing with over the phone was an absolute dunce.
      Long story short, I took the $40+K I received for the buy-back, and purchased a low mileage 08 Z06 (which now has h/c/i) to pair with my '16 Z06. So definitely made lemonade out of lemons (pun intended). That whole experience made me go from being a true Ford fan, to never wanting to own a Ford vehicle again, even though I was seriously considering purchasing a GT350 as a replacement (until I read about everything you just listed). At least Chevy rolls out the "red-carpet" if you're a 'Vette owner. *rant over*

    I've owned 2 Mustang GTs with the MT82. The transmission itself isn't that bad. There's a huge misconception that the transmission is the main problem. The primary issue is the stock shift linkage, which is absolute garbage. The MGW kit replaces the entire linkage, and makes it feel 100x better.

Those fixes do alot to mitigate the issues with the MT-82 and I spent a hell of a lot less for my Mustang. The problem is the seats sit high compared to the console and wheel and there isn’t enough thigh room with the wheel properly adjusted (and I’m only 6 1” 180lbs). I’m going to end up getting sparco’s so I don’t have to fiddle with my seat adjustments constantly.

Had a 2017 gt prior to this. I was one of the fortunate ones I guess. Put around 42k miles on it and the mt-82 was still like butter when I traded it. I was surprised after reading some of the horror stories about it. Nice review. I will say, the MT82's issues were directly due to the clutch. In stock form it wasn't bad but when you started modifying the engine and tuning it, raising the rev limiter, the OEM clutch assemblies really did NOT like to disengage very well into the 7,000 rpm area.
    The fix for this is a Mcleod RST or Mantic twin disk, etc, the transmission itself worked well for me and held up great until I sold my coyote/mt82 car after about 80,000 miles. It still had the stock clutch too, in good working order except the intermittent 7k+ hard shifting issue. It was a 2013 GT brembo car with bolt-ons that dyno'd 430 rwhp. I autocrossed the fuck out of that car for two seasons, launched in 2nd and 3k+ rpm dumping the clutch on 315/30-18 BFG Rivals at least 150 times, did a little street racing, road trips, daily driver, the typical shit. But. The transmission was never an issue, it was the clutch at random times. This is a well known fact unless you got a lemon MT82 that slipped past QC from the factory and wasn't assembled correctly. There are MT82 cars running 10's both N/A and supercharged today. They tend to fail (break a gear itself) around the 750-850 rwhp area, and will obviously wear out the synchros before that from higher hp abuse over long periods of time if you do not address the clutch problem for drag racing or road course use. I wasn't doing consistent drag racing (at the strip) or road courses, so I never really had a need for a new clutch. But I did miss a hard 2-3 shift dozens of times because of this issue and the transmission was fine when I sold it. No undue noises & no particles when I changed the gear oil around 70k miles.

      @XavierEyez Před 3 lety +7

      Yeah but when you pay that much for a car, you expect it to work from the box. That’s why I’m currently in a lemon law case for mine. I don’t understand how my BRZ had a better transmission than my GT.

Once my current clutch goes though I’ll go RST. I don’t really mind how prickly the trans is cuz it encourages very precise shifts- when I get in my friends’ manual cars i can shift them very smoothly at any rpm. MT82 ratios are also perfect for street driving. It’s shitty, but not that shitty IMO

    I'd have to agree about the Voodoo engine, it ended up as an engineering mistake because ford wanted the gt350 to still sound like a muscle car so they gave the Voodoo engine an unconventional flat-plane crank, which caused excessive vibrations which killed the crank-mounted oil pump due to harmonics. If you look at almost every flat-plane crank the crank pins are up-down-down-up, but in the Voodoo engine it's up-down-up-down. It's a shame and a waste of a good engine.. maybe someone down the line will correct this issue eventually but I doubt it, because it would require a custom crank and 4 custom cams lol.

Unfortunately it also means the Voodoo is permanently crippled unless you swap to a coyote crank and cams.. now you know why it's the "Voodoo", because it took some serious Voodoo to make it work lol

    • @FL50ssp
      @FL50ssp Před 2 lety +3

      @@Drake5153 Nice to finally come across someone else that understands why Vooblew is a mess. Non-conventional FPC is the culprit for the secondary vibration issues you mentioned above. Look at the Ford FPC crank (up-dn-up-dn) compared to conventional (up-dn-dn-up) FPC and you will notice the Ford FPC has two large counterweights at each end of the crank to try and mitigate excessive secondary vibrations from non-conventional FPC. Nice in theory but failed in application. The up coming C8 Z06 FPC uses conventional (up-dn-dn-up) FPC and will not have the issue Ford did.
