- Our Ford Shelby GT500 is no stranger to the drag race track. Unfortunately, it's also no stranger to losing. Over the past year, we've seen it lose to the likes of the Tesla Model Y, BMW M8 and Chevrolet Corvette to name a few (at least it beat the Dodge Challenger Hellcat!). In this drag race video, Carlos Lago and Kurt Niebuhr bring out another muscle car for the Shelby GT500 to race: the Ford Mustang Mach 1. Will the 760-horsepower GT500 leave the 480-hp Mustang Mach 1 in the dust? Which of these Ford muscle cars has the fastest 0-60 time? We can't wait to find out. It's Ford vs. Ford! Here in Europe, a Mach 1 costs around 70.000 $ and the last time I checked a GT500 was around 150.000 $. Crazy how different the prices are.
Dealers are marking them way up. Even in North America the gt500’s were showing up for well over 100 grand.
Europe has crazy taxes
For half the price, the Mach 1 wasn’t that far behind. Not bad considering the difference in HP. Maybe Ford can get the Mach 1 a little closer to 550 HP to make things interesting.
Not to mention glorious NA sounds. I mean supercharger whine is mean but nothing like the crescendo we hear from NA V8s

@@turboleggy the gt500 sounds incredible, supercharged whine its not that noticeable and still rebs to 7500 rpm with all that power is just music to your ears , Ford engineers did an incredible job with this car , sorry but a match 1 can't touch this thing

The Mach 1 was closer than expected.
That 94 ft stopping from 60 mph is actually insane. Like pull your face off and splat it on the windshield crazy.
It was a lot closer than I thought it would be. Curious if the Mach 1 had twin turbos how it might fare against the GT500. Or maybe not even something that extreme. Perhaps just some basic mods and tuning. Fun video guys, thanks!
would have added to the display in performance with a GT350 in the middle. Good stuff either way. Hopefully a track video to come soon as well? =)

480hp is plenty and so is that $54k price tag.
Please add 60-130 mph and 100-200 kph to your testing. Many others are now using those for acceleration for higher powered cars. Any chance you could add these? Thanks guys.
what is the top speed of frod mustag shelby gt 500
this is old but when in drag strip mode on the mach 1 along with traction off with sport engaged you have to shift early or the tires will lose traction and you’ll end up spinning out and shifting early will prevent that from 1st 2nd and 2nd to 3rd

I got to drive the gt500 for 3 days and it's ture, there's wheel spin at 85mph and yes, it's terrifying. It's such a beast and needs to be driven with respect or it will put you through a concrete wall.
Nice...but remember that Willow Springs is not anywhere near sea level. The GT500 would smoke it anyways...but forced induction always has an advantage over a NA car at 2,500 feet.

Can you guys test drive/ compare, a 2021 Roush stage 3 mustang to a 2021 Shelby GT500? Curious on the big differences if any. I know there’s only 10hp difference.

I don’t know why they even did this video. If the GT 500 was a manual which we know it’s not, initially the mach one may have had a chance. Both cars are automatic and the GT500 has a superior transmission, and superior horsepower, this is a no contest
I had a 2013 gt500 that I modded to 725hp and it was sketchy to drive all out. I have a 23 10 speed Mach 1 now and it’s a whole lot more predictable to drive at the ragged edge.

You should put it in drag mode, trans in "S" hold the brake and bring the rpms up just a bit. Then release and go. Revan Evan gets high 11s.

Saw a video engineering explained channel and the gt500 and 10r80 auto mustang GT are pretty even from 0-60, but after that the SC takes over the race.
The Shelby isn’t 74000, it’s 74000 plus 20000 dealer markup.. bringing it to 94000. And the Mach 1 isn’t 54000, it’s 54000 plus 20000 dealer markup making it 74000

Why would these cars have rear traction only? They should have 4 wheel drive to really take advantage of that power. It has been shown again and again that large HP vehicles are much faster when the 4 wheels have traction
Where has it shown that? majority of fastes American OEM cars are RWD, not AWD.

I must say both are fast!! Not like the Mach 1 was slugging behind.
That because the Shelby loses traction from a 40 roll and doesn’t launch hard on the street (launch bogs on street due to the DCT setup) taking away from the gap effect.
Shelby 60-130 is a good 4sec faster than the Mach 1 and the gap would get even worse after 130…
Quick stoplight to stoplight street races could be close due to my above stated reasons.
Anyway, both great cars; but, who buys the new Mach 1 with an auto when there’s the available Tremec !?
@@ms3ben I did. I live in a congested area where having a manual makes traffic even more awful. Plus, I have had 30+ YEARS of driving a manual; I'm ok with the ability to relax once in a while. On the bright side, I'm significantly quicker than a manual Mach 1

Ive been driving manual since the early 90's as well and if I could only have one car it'd be an auto due to your said reasons.
I was just making a general statement about the Mach 1 based off my opinion. You still have a great car but to me the best part about the Mach1 is the Tremec!

The GT500 Launch Control is just fine off the track...You just have to dial down the RPM. I use about 1700 on an unprepped surface. It will bog a bit at launch, but the computer will find the best traction. Still not nearly as good as AWD, but its better than human error.
A little bit? It’s terrible compared to most of its competitors. A Carrera S would eat the GT500 for breakfast off the line despite having 300 less hp.

The Launch control does not suck... the traction does.
The computer can only work with the cards its dealt.

Uh, ok let’s put 760 hp with a blower up against a car with 480 hp and then act surprised at who wins. I just bought a Mach 1 two days ago, but I wouldn’t even waste my time going against a GT 500 unless I just enjoy getting embarrassed.
This Mach 1 really has me interested in a Mustang for the first time.

Dont be, sold mine for the lack of quality control and the. An evap that went bad and they wanted to charge me 3k to fix. Lukily mine was under 40k for $50k a mustang definitely not worth it. I would

In the drag race it depends on the driver, from a rolls the Mustangs pull away and the road course would just be a waste of time.
My guess is a mustang would kill on race track but would be a close drag.

Back when I was younger being born at the tail end of the muscle car era and growing up in the oil embargo and K car doggy car era I feared I’d missed out on the seat of your pants rides that I probably wouldn’t be able to afford in adulthood. Well, I’m here to say that I’m ecstatic that the newer modern muscle is so wicked powerful and fast. I have a big block muscle car in my garage, which is my baby, sitting next to a modern muscle car, my other baby, and I don’t think my old one could run with my new one.

You guys usually have really good videos but what I don't get is why are you taking traction control off? Leave it on and you don't spin, trust the Ford engineers, you don't know more than them. Drag Strip mode, TC on LC at 1800-2200... And stop manually shifting. If you want to have fun, sure what you did is fine, but if your gonna race to win stop thinking you're smarter than the car.

I think the outcome was exactly as expected, but considering how much more approachable a Mach 1 is as an actual vehicle to drive, I think I would still prefer a Mach 1 over a GT500

Gt500 no doubt the faster car and it has Pilot Sport 4 tires which in that pavement are going to grip better than the cold Cup 2s on the Mach 1
A second for 20K cheaper yeh the Mach 1 was close enough and a fun car to drive perfect for a quarter mile. One had a super charger the other different and no the Shelby didn’t disappear that was close at all quarter mile.
