As a Mopar owner.......I hate the looks of the Challenger so GT500 is the one Id take.
If I'm getting a muscle car, I'm going full muscle car. So dodge it is.
If I were getting a sports car, gt350r is the way I'd go.
@edmundscars don’t sell the GT500 and keep racing it 🔥
I’m a mustang guy and I would choose the black ghost. I just think the gt500 is very underpowered, heavy, slow, and overpriced. I would just get a super snake.
@@benjaminmatute9085 the GT500 is the supersnake 760hp Mustang......and is faster than the Black Ghost. Did you even watch the video?
The GT500 (760 hp) beat the Challenger Black Ghost (807 hp), and the C8 Z06 (670 hp) beat the GT500. Lesson: power doesn't necessarily equate to performance.
I keep telling folks exactly what you've said here! weight, transmission, engine configuration (mid, rear, front) gearing, yada yada yada! Will make a difference! Also, people simply LOOK at RAW numbers without regards to TRUE numbers! The GT500 makes on avg. 655 - 663 rwhp! The new C8 Z makes anywhere between 599 - 640 rwhp! (depending on Dyno) Street Speed 717, actually got 640hp on the dyno on his highlighter yellow Z. So at the end of the day, the GT500 isn't making 90hp more than the Z! It's definitely, significantly heavier, it's not a mid-engine car and it's NOT even a direct competitor for the GT500, However, the Ford GT IS!!
While I agree, power doesn't necessarily equate to performance but the gt500 and corvette aren't even in the same league

The GT500 is amazing. I’m so glad Ford got away from the straight line only performance that the previous GT500’s had, and put some handling into the package…👍🏾👍🏾

@@reyfuentes4572 The current GT500 is in a completely different league when it comes to handling
@@edmundscars oh I definitely agreed but I seen almost all gen gt500s get down on local and other tracks...
The 2013 Shelby GT500 had the rear axle suspension that's why it handled like that. The new ones have the independent rear suspension which is much better for handling.
@@reyfuentes4572 You mean the old ones with solid rear axe and regular manual transmissions?

Those Shelby’s are insane- for the money they are legit
The Challenger is, and will always be, legendary for the having the most power and still being the slowest among all of its competitors.
It's true. But they are big, thick girls that just look so damn fine. Lots of weight. Lots of room. Lots of sexiness.
It's just so heavy. But I think most people buying challengers aren't looking for pure speed. You can't deny the looks and oldschool muscle car appeal it has.

Oh ya that would be good
the ss 1le auto would probably beat this black ghost or tie it. 4.8secs to 60 is slow for an 800 plus hp. but i understand, too much wheel spin. it's like 80% of the weight is in the front and there's not enough weight transfer when accelerating to give the rear tires grip.
😢 Gonna miss that GT500!! I now view it as the standard here on U-drags that everything else is compared to. I love seeing how all the other cars fare against it. I think you guys should keep it for now! There are more cars to race against it such as a Camaro!
Go it against a 911 turbo s. Bbyeeee..And go the z-06 too. New hero car from Germany.
It'll be discontinued?
The Challenger is a modern muscle car trying to become a sledge hammer while the GT500 is now a modern sports car trying to become a scalpel. Both beautiful rides but there was always going to be one clear winner here, the GT500.
Thats a great reference.
Not in a real drag race the gt500 would not win
@@mattheishman8435 On a drag strip with a prepped track and everything set for the best launch a vehicle can get, the GT500 would still win. Simple power to weight is enough to give the edge to the Shelby. The Demon however, that'd probably win at the drag strip but would have been left in the dust on the "U" drags as it can't make turns very well.
I mean not really the demon still exists
@@chrisvaughn5748 What would it do against a GT500? It can only perform well on a prepped drag strip.
Crazy because the the shelby thats shown is the base shelby and not the one with the optional carbon fiber track package!
That challenger is disappointing honestly, the tires and weight of the challenger kill it. It just doesn't hook or grip and is shaped like a brick, a beautiful brick though

That GT500 has some crazy top-end. Just think if it had all-wheel drive.
Then the top end and handling would suffer...
I don't think yall understand and, fastest factory ice cars are rear wheel driven, awd drive is good for a launch but gives diminishing returns on the top end whilst it would also make the car heavier.

Power to weight ratio, gearing, aerodynamics and grip. These all play into it.
The GT500 runs Cup2s, 180 Treadwear track tires that are 10mm wider than the Challys near allseason Pzeros. I'd love to see both on the same tire. But Aero, weight and gearing all are in favor of the stang.
Neither car have good aero just so you both know. I'd actually say the gt500 has worse aero because of all the sharp edges and crazy front end compared to the yacht on wheels
Ehhh no, that mustang frontal area is obviously more aerodynamic

No surprise on the U-turn and acceleration out of the turn what shocked me is how the 500 walked the Black Ghost on the straight drag section, even when the Ghost got the jump the 500 instantly reeled it in and passed it. Ford had the total package with this 500.
Well the 10 speed trans does help vs the 8 speed lol

The cornering ability on the gt500 is actually surprising 😮
What? Have you scene that car on the nurburing? It's very fast in corners!
its pretty much built for the track
Modern Mustangs are exceptional on the track.
It can almost keep up with a 911 GT3 on track mate and it weights 1900 kilos. It handles really well for a big GT car.
Okay, okay, I'm subscribing! Just yesterday, I posted that I wished you'd U-Drag Race your GT500 vs a Redeye (or variant) and boom, you guys delivered! I too wasn't surprised at the winner, but I was surprised at how hard the GT500 pulls on the more powerful (on paper) Hellcat. While the race against the Z06 was quite interesting, THIS was the apples to apples "street cred" race people were waiting for. Much appreciated and enjoyed!
I really love the U-Drag course; it's a very interesting take on regular drag racing, makes it way more interesting and entertaining.
For a car the Chrysler says should be firmly in the 10s, it seems hard to actually get them there outside a prepped track. Still a great looking throwback car, but I suspect the 392 provides much of the muscle car look, sound and feel for a fraction of the dollars. The T/A and shaker cars are very nice!
Well a scatpack ran a 12.1 in car and drivers testing. And here this 800hp+ challenger runs a 12.6 😅
What are you talking about? They tell you that it will be in the 10s on a prepped surface. They didn't say about anywhere esle.
The GT500 is an amazing Mustang. Imo.This is the best overall Mustang ever built. The 5.2 Predator and the DCT Is an outstanding combination in a Mustang that can handle both a dragstrip or a road course.
The launch is dogshit but the topend is really nice
Yea the gt 350 a better deal for the money ! 350 r hands down better!
I like the Udrag format. Short and sweet head to head that's not just about acceleration.
Love the U-Drag's! Keep up the good work.
The Challenger remains as it always has...an overweight, clumsy pig for all the HP it supposedly makes. I mean, 5 or 6 BUS-LENGTHS that Mopar pig was gapped by!
The GT500 embarrasses MANY supercars that cost magnitudes more than it does...in drags (where it is limited by traction) , on tracks, and from rolls. I've owned both and there's simply ZERO comparison. The Cobra is an absolute f'n beast.
The GT500 doubles duty as a "musclecar" pretty well....but it truly is a track beast, complete with amazing handling, grip, acceleration and the rest of it. The Dodges are relics, since they ARE built on a Mercedes E-class chassis from 2005 and for what you pay, have pretty embarrassing interiors and a rearview camera that looks like it was sourced from a 2002 parts bin. But...as we've all seen, the Mopars perform flawlessly in parking lots in the inner cities while liquifying tires as they do donuts, while lizzos twerk on the hood
bwwwhaaaa😂😂😂 100 percent!
This is the perfect example what the Shelby GT500 would do to a Dodge Demon on this track.
Not really. Demon could do better or worse. The launch would be better but the cornering performance would be worse. I am a Mopar fan, but ik this track heavily favor's the Camaro/Mustang platform. All 3 are beautiful beasts
that's crazy, I never thought a Shelby would beat a Challenger Black Ghost, does horsepower even exist anymore lol?
Gotta give Chrysler props for the Hellcat thang but they're just not great vehicles - too old and too little development to effectively use all that power.
@tregaming07 that would be interesting to see the demon race it. The launch should be awesome on the Demon ( even though it's not prepped) . The demon has more power to improve the power to weight ratio. Although the brakes on the demon and corning is probably horrible. Would like to watch.
@@tregaming07 Yeah the track favors cars that can actually make turns, Mopar doesn’t make vehicles like that. One trick pony with 1/4 mile blast.

The 500 has proved once again that it is the reigning King of American Muscle. It is very good in every performance venue: Street, Strip, Roll, and Track. Can't believe they have been launching in 1st. I'll have to pay more attention and see how many are doing this.
During that second race though even after it was completely hooked up the GT500 still wizzed passed it. And from ready on the hellcat forums it seems most people get around 4.5 seconds to 60. They got 4.8 seconds here but this runway looks pretty dusty but that affects both cars

Great video! Tons of fun to watch. Always lots of fun comments about "apples to apples".
Given some of the comments, I would like to say for context, that Ford invented the pony car category with the mustang; the cars created to compete with it's immediate market success were the Camaro, Challenger, Barracuda and Firebird. Today, the Camaro is still the most direct competitor (the ZL1 in this case), the Challenger now trends more towards a "muscle car" like the Charger but is a great comparison as one of the two remaining original pony car competitors. The BMW M8 Competition is actually a great GT500 competitor as well as someone mentioned.
The Corvette was a sports car. The car that competed with the Vette was the Thunderbird. Not the Mustang. The TBird has not been around for a while, so the Vette has essentially been on it's own and morphing into this weird, sub-super sports car category and making tons of money. It does not compete with the Ford GT. Not at all. The GT is now a million dollar exclusive, road homologated race-car. It is a very very different buyer and market. The T-Bird name was recently trademarked by Ford however....future ZORA owners beware :) I still don't consider the Vette (or 500) a supercar despite performance. Even the Viper is not there. They are super-sports cars, but not real super cars.
I think the new GT500 gets compared to everything since Ford created a car that was both a Pony Car, and pseudo Sports Car with Muscle Car traits. The two cars, are completely different in purpose. The MSRPs indicate this, with the Vette costing >50-grand more fully loaded than the fully loaded GT500. I have yet to see the two go head to head where the Z06 was on the same (non-Race compound) tires on a track as the Shelby.
Thanks for the video!
I rented a GT500 same as the one in the video while on vacation in Orlando last year. The owner had fit a smaller charger pulley and exhaust to take it to 900hp and wow was it the best car I've ever driven and I've tried a lot of different cars.
They named that challenger correctly because it got murdered by the GT500.
🤣🤣🤣
its always the "challenger" and rarely the winner.. maybe they should bring in some V6's with 300 hp less and it might do ok, like a M3 or something..
I think the fact that the GT500 also has the aero of a track car while the Black Ghost has the aero of a small house was probably a significant factor even after hookup.
It's an aftermarket Shelby...not a stock factory GT500...Try that with a Hennessy modified Challenger
@@billrusinko7294
I'm not so sure about that - the various Hellcat iterations over the years have been known to spin their wheels well over 100mph if you really boot it. It wouldn't surprise me if, especially on unprepped concrete, a reliably poor surface for traction, that the Black Ghost was spinning and/or cutting power all the way through the 1/4mile, even on the 2nd race.
It would also mean that the "roll" doesn't actually meaningfully solve the traction issue for the Challenger bc whatever speeds it was pulling out of that u-turn wouldn't have been nearly enough to actually let it put the power down
@@billrusinko7294😂😂😂😆
As a Mopar fan, and Challenger owner - I knew the result before watching. The GT500 is a beast with stickier rubber, better brakes, better aero, a greater rpm band - making its power longer.... and its considerably lighter. All said I still don't want one. Challengers offer a certain kind of magic that makes them possibly the world's best cruising, burnout and highway car. They eat up miles and only return smiles. However, I'd love to see both cars on the same tire to see if the couch-car could close the gap. PZeros are not the best choice for 800hp and 4500lb regardless of width. They're an allseason compared to the Pilot Cup2.
I just want to say that the interchiller was the best piece of equipment they ever made and built for a muscle car you can use your AC to cool your supercharger with a flip of a switch it is the best thing they ever made

Would love to see a U-Drag with the Shelby against a ZL1 1LE!!!!!! Maybe, also a gauge that shows gas/brake pedal input. Thanks for the awesome content. ❤️🤓
I second that. It'd be nice to see the going out production ZL1 1LE against the best of what Shelby has to offer. Should be surprisingly close between those two.
Wouldn't be close. Gt500s regularly trap 134-135 mph and no ZL1 in any instrumented test has bettered 125 mph. It would get decimated in this race.
The gt500 would probably win due to the power in the straights, but the zl1 would catch up in braking and cornering.
Both great ideas
@@camonly849 That would be most likely. The GT500 is an all around beast of a car, as is the ZL1, but the GT500 would end up being the victor simply due to the power it can put down. The cornering and braking are excellent on the ZL1 but won't be enough to balance the acceleration and top end of the GT500. Would still be fun to watch, would probably be a closer race than against the Challenger Black Ghost.
Nice run. I thought it would have been closer. I figured the Shelby would out Brake and out turn the chlally. The Shelby really did well on the top end also. I was impressed with the braking of the chally. Maybe with the same tires as the Chally would make it a better race. Either way I still think the Shelby would win. Considering the Chally is a big car with real space for four occupants, I was impressed.
Love the U-Drags. I’d like to see you guys throw in some EV competition. The GT500 is such an incredible car, so I’m surprised to note that a NON-Plaid Model S would best it to the 1/4 mile by almost a whole second (10.8 @ 128 vs. what I think was an 11.7 by the Mustang). Certainly the GT500 would out brake and corner, which would make it interesting!
This drag race was absolutely awesome.
@ericbritton8146, glad you enjoyed it!
All knew how this was gonna go lol
God they sound great together.
Love these!! Where did Kurt and Reese go!?
It was the shadow behind the mustang 4:49 💯
Yesss! YESSSSSS!!!!!!! :) I asked for this last week!!!
gt500 will always beat cats
As a challenger owner, what they really need is a good traction control system. The car is pretty analog and driver focused and thats both good and bad. Its old school, but you could tell that dodge really needs to hire more geeky computer guys to program a good traction control system.
You should have seen my face when you said FRONT WHEEL DRIVE!!...😂😂
I'd love to see a new GT500 vs and original 60's. I know what would win, but it would great to see how far we've come in the automotive world!
I believe this was done around the time of the GT500's launch.
Yeah the new one would destroy the old one. Like bad.
Be nice and interesting to see an M5 (base, comp, CS) tuned with the Noelle Performance tune to see what numbers that would produce. I have read threads that say their software is a joke and or a rip off.
I wish that y’all would do these races on a prep surface for the dragstrip part my 2018 hellcat ran a 10 .9 best time 11.10 all day
More like the 100k Black Boat.
Imagine if they put the GT500 track package out there oh my God Ford did it again 🐴🐎🏁
The mustang shakes a lot on the straight, the camera was vibrating like crazy!
Can you guys do the new wrx vs last STI
12.6 for the Dodge is due to tire and/or driver. But there is no excuse for the 123 mph trap speed . 707hp hellcat's trap that heatsoaked in the summer.
It's just a fact
Predator > any Mopar engine

Can we see the GT500 VS ZL1?
That would be a much more fair race.
