It’s time for another Germany vs USA showdown!!
Mat’s lined up in the Mustang Shelby GT 500, and alongside him, we have the oh-so-rare Mercedes-AMG SLS Black Series! The question is, which will come out on top over the quarter-mile?
Well, let’s see how they compare! Starting with the Mustang, it’s packing a 5.2-litre supercharged V8 under the bonnet that can put down 760hp & 850Nm of torque. It drives the rear wheels only, and it weighs in at 1916kg.
As for the SLS, well it’s a whole lot lighter, tipping the scales at just 1,550kg! However, it’s down on power… It may be housing a 6.2-litre naturally-aspirated V8 upfront, but it can ‘only’ put down 631hp & 630Nm. What’s more, just like the Mustang, its rear-wheel-drive only.

Agreed…sheesh that things pretty. I like the AMG GT and think in person they have a real presence you don’t notice through pictures but it’ll always lack the “it” factor the SLS had. They really nailed it.

A 722 blasted past me on the motorway a few years ago, sounded like a low-flying fighter plane going past the car. That Merc 6.2 was an absolutely epic engine

@@carter.coleman It actually beats Hellcat Redeyes easily in a straight line and can also perform on a track better than them. The only reason that makes sense to get a Hellcat Redeye over the GT500 is using it for cruising long distance

The GT500 is a beast, it's a shame it weighs so much, should've been at least 200kgm lighter.

Would've been way more expensive if it weighed less. The Mustang has always been about offering thrills and a V8 at the lowest possible price, obviously the GT500 is a completely different beast but it doesn't stray that far from that mindset.
The Shelby GT500 carbon fiber track version is around almost 100lbs lighter than the base model which weighs 4,187lbs. The Shelby GT500 is heavy because it has 6 intercoolers, huge brakes, and a dual clutch transmission. Dual clutch transmissions add weight as well.

The fact that the GT500 is now as fast as most supercars from the early 2010’s is mind blowing. Back in 2014 no one would’ve ever imagined that a factory Mustang could go toe to toe with a hardcore AMG.

When launched that SLS Black was incredibly beautiful. It still is. And I’m not even a Mercedes/AMG fan - I respect them for sure, but prefer BMW M cars or a 911.
The interesting thing was how much the camera was shaking on the Mustang and how still it was on the AMG.
Can't think of many better sounding drag races, if any, than this one..... That SLS is a classic.

Interesting story: I was a salesperson for a Mercedes dealer just outside Detroit. A colleague said we had to go pick up a car from Edsel Ford II. I agreed to go. Out comes a 2012 SLS. I met the man also and he took me on a tour of his personal collection, which included two GTs, an original Lightning, Mustangs, etc.. We took pics together at the end. That was a great day!
P.S. How he got the SLS was also a great story.

The SLS AMG is the most beautiful car ever produced by Mercedes. PERIOD.
300 SL Gullwing is more beautiful.
Nah the SL65 AMG Black Series is slightly better looking because it's much more unique while the SLS has variations with almost similar styling for the past decade

I see you raced in drag strip mode. It softens the rear shocks for better weight transfer, however the surface must be prepped to take advantage of this. If the surface is not prepped it only goes up in wheel spin & more delay. You should race in track mode on unprepared surface. I would be kool to see a rematch in track mode.

11.5 for the SLS. Makes you appreciate how quick a 992 turbo s is. Surely its peak petrol right now.
Its mostly because of its AWD. If these two cars were AWD as well they would definitely be running high to mid 10 seconds as well. These GT500s on a prepped drag strip already runs high 10s

@@gorugadha6630 not entirely but the SLS has a higher power to weight ratio and inflation adjusted cost 130k pounds more. Life isn't a drag race but it is an interesting comparison showcasing the advancement of technology. A car that costs almost half as much is considerably faster only 8 years on.

@@colesliva5751 same performance on a straight road yeah, not close on track, its heavy.
@@looseyourzlf that makes 0 difference on a straight road. 250 more hp and the torque from a supercharger is absolutely worth the added weight. You can see how much hp means in this video. the mustang is as heavy as a truck but the extra 130hp makes that mean little when the car has traction and can put it down. SLS would smoke it with extra power.

This SLS is above the entry level AMG Merc but below the top end.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching that Shelby almost beat a vehicle that's more comparable to the Ford GT. A sub 100 grand vehicle almost equaling to a true super car. I love it !
And Shelby has 130 more hp 100nm more 2020 car while sls 2010
