It's competed in numerous Edmunds U-Drags races, carved canyons in the mountains around Los Angeles, and even acted as a daily driver. So, how’d it hold up? This documentary-style goodbye to the GT500 is priceless! I own a bright orange 18 GT and although they are very different machines, it's fun that folks are enjoying the platform as much as they do. Time for a GTD?

As a former GT350 with lots of hours on track , and having the opportunity to drive a GT500 CFTP once on a familiar track I will say that the GT500 solves EVERY issue that sort of holds back the GT350R in being the best/quickest/easiest to drive track day car. GT350 'unreliable' 526 HP same as a 6th gen camaro SS1LE with mods, fix that with a BIG supercharger, Cross plane crank, lower compression+redline and let the TORQUE haul you past every car on a straight , DCT to minimize shift time and chance for money shift, list goes on.
Specially the issue of weight lol

I daily drive my gt500 cftp and love it
I have a co-worker that daily drives a 2021 GT500, too. That's the best car he's ever owned, prob the last "New" car he will ever own (he's in his mid 50s) and he said he will drive his literally til there is nothing left of it. No way he would spend $80k+ on a car and not drive it to the wheels fall off, and I agree. I daily my 14 GT, as well, and that's my first car ever.
Me too, Eruption Green CFTP.. changed the calipers to a soft gold to play off the clear coat
As a current gen 2020 GT500 owner I don't think I'll ever ever sell it, it oozes feeling special from the moment you start it
I have a 2020 350R and I have driven it 30,000 miles mostly on road trips and on just short out and about evening trips.
I could not get a GT500 in Australia so I bought a 10R80 2020 Mustang GT and stuck 40K US of quality mods on it (super charger, supporting mods, suspension etc). It does low 5's 60-13mph and for a big car handles awesome. I run canyons with a mate of mine in a 2020 GT3RS Porsche, no I'm not quicker than him in corners but he cannot believe the incredible performance of my stang v $ paid.
Really sad to see this monster go. The sale $ of this might offset the loses of one of the EVs Edmunds owns in there fleet when they go to sell those paperweights.
Stop playing you guys are definitely buying another one. lol If I won the lottery today, by this afternoon I'd own a GT500 (not orange lol) as well as a 350R no question.

Great video!! For the exact same reasons you guys talked about and more. I bought (and still own) a brand new 2022 Ford Shelby GT500 CFTP in December 2022 and have enjoyed every minute of driving my car! You guys should buy another when they eventually announce and debut the new GT500!! 🤣

I have a regular s550 Mustang GT to wihich I have pretty much thrown the Steeda/BMR suspension/chassis book at, some manual trans mods and aftermarket wheels and tires. A couple of weeks ago I had attended a PCA car control clinic at Metlife stadium. The car aquitted itself quite well against 911's and Caymans. Needless to say even with mods it was a heck of alot less expensive than the Porsches there. It amazing that a large and heavy car like the Mustang can handle that well. Its a really entertaining drive there is plenty of sound coming off the regular Coyote V-8.
Would mind telling us approximately what those mods cost?
I am disappointed you guys didn’t do a U Drag with the number one competitor for this car, a Camaro ZL1 10 speed auto (regular, not 1LE as your car is not a CFTP car). If you didn’t sell the GT500 yet, please try to find a 10 speed ZL1 and do one final U Drag with them!

Without a doubt, Edmunds should buy another Shelby when it comes out. The GT350/350R is still my favorite though. That VooDoo engine and manual is the more special powertrain imo.
Awesome video tribute to one of the most special cars ever made. We can only hope they make a new GT500. If so, Edmunds, definitely must have in their long term test fleet. I own a 2021 CFTP, and driving this car on the track is an indescribable joy. I’d take a GT500 over cars costing 2,3,5x+ more.

I’m fortunate to have one and couldn’t agree more, wish yours had cf wheels for that extra edge, if hopefully there’s a GTD one day please make sure to option magnesium wheels and active aero

I’ve always been a Mustang lover. I have only three mustangs in my lifetime. I say you justify the budget and buy another GT - 500 when it comes out. But can we get something other than orange lol

I had one briefly. I knew it was going to be expensive to run, but I still bit for awhile. A Mustang GTO if you will; Gas Tires Oil. Plus it didn’t fit my trailer for track days (too wide). Cup 2s are five hundred Benjamin’s each.
Definitely an expensive car on consumables to track. If you can afford it it’s worth it IMO, but not for everybody’s budget tolerance.
Buy another one when the next model comes out.

Yes! Get another one! A newer one. 2023? Or a Mustang GTD. Maybe I missed it if you already did it but what about a Liquid Carbon Fiber Ford GT?
Darn you Edmunds, here I am looking at used GT 500s now when I already have 6 shit boxes and no parking space.
“Special oil” lol. It’s still a Mustang guys. As a mustang owner, the GT500 is special, not 48 hour oil changes-level, special lol. 10 quarts of Motorcraft 5w50 and about an hour will do the job. The transmission might need servicing, but that’s not recommended at their mileage unless it’s literally tracked 5 days a week lol
the vibe I got was finding the right tech, cause on my 350, a lot of places try to put the filters on and cause oil fires and engine failure when they back out. He has a point. Why buy a track car and treat it like your old Honda Civic? Especially when you can't afford to replace the engine yourself.
@@ghuff31 you’ve got a point! Definitely recommend taking your performance car to a performance shop for its services! I work at a performance shop in Indiana, we service exotics, sports cars and muscle. Gt500’s are definitely in that category! They deserve to be treated well, I was just giving my experience with them, which is 10 quarts of Motorcraft 5w-50 and an hour of labor lol
After a quick search, I couldn't find what kind of reliability Edmunds had with the car. I've got its twin, and I'd love to know how it fared after punishing it.

I really enjoyed my 2012, the maintenance cost and availability was an issue.
as a former GT350 owner(3 years owner), can only guess what the gas mileage was on the 500.. pretty much every review and some of the longer term ones all say about the same thing. Great for track and heavy performance use as well as just daily around town and some light gran touring stuff. Hopefully i can get hands on one of these before too long. Gas, oil and tire prices be damned, lol. Id prefer mine in that lambo green color offered. Cheers all

It wouldn't bog if you completely turn off all the traction control. Since you weren't using launch control there was no reason to have any type of traction control enabled. Tisk tisk. You could have been somebody! LOL

The GT500 was almost 11 seconds faster around VIR than the M8 Comp. Not even close in terms of performance around a road course track.

Its such a "no brainer" that asking for viewers thoughts on buying the next 500 has obviously got to be strictly for the "tube" ratings/algorithm boost....... "SHOULD we buy another one"? Funny. As for "budget", its as simple as can be. Sell every long term vehicle thats in inventory until its reached, nuff said. If that somehow still falls short, sell a kidney.

Well, the sound is awesome but... to some extent engineered (of course, what I am thinking about is the Hyundai 5 IONIQ and its not only engineered but fully doctored sound).
What do you mean by engineered? All engines have engineered sound technically, being firing order, bore, stroke, manifold design and exhaust routing and more, all play a part in how an engine sounds.
@@ALMX5DP Sure, but at some point (the F-150 Raptor's "trombone" is a kind a borderline for me) it loses its technical merit.

@@PrzemyslawSliwinski I don’t see it that way at all. The Raptors loop is basically just for packaging. I bet there are other examples that aren’t obvious but yield the same result by equalizing the piping length. Nothing inauthentic about it in my mind. But that is of course different from this GT500, I wasn’t sure what part/aspect specifically you were referring to calling it engineered like that.
