    Very nice, impressive work. I did similar for my pack boat. Original seat was glued to the floor but I sat too low on it. Used high density closed cell foam I stole from the floatation of a white water boat I had. Used a surf form for shaping. After an hour in boat I feel hot spots and am slowly carving those down for a perfect fit. Thanks for sharing, I like your work!

    Dog shedding blades work great for scupting this type of foam. Looks like a RIDE cushion less the offloading well. For back purchase 1/4" ABS instead of wood, can shape with heat gun or torch and waterproof. cover all with 2mm neoprene ....Great video instruction

    A comfortable seat is the difference between a 1 hour paddle versus an all day paddle. Excellent work.

    If you don't have the time or inclination a Bumfortable seat is a very good option designed by an adventure kayaker who used to make his own like this but was also a foam plastics engineer so decided to design and mould his own instead. I've done both and happy with both, the Bumfortable sure is a lot quicker and easier though and you get the full seat in one rather than three pieces you have to fix and fit.

    That foam is cross link PE. Probably 2 or 4 pound density. You can get it from any foam supplier in your area

    • @OrcaboatsCa
      @OrcaboatsCa  Před 8 lety +4

      It is 2 lb and you can get it denser but the price goes up considerably for denser and it is not really necessary. 2 lb. is by no means "squishy". You may get foam like this in your area, but it is not readily sold in any foam shops in my part of the country.

      Love it! I have a bad back from it getting broken a few years back,so my trips have only been for about 4 hours max! But since I have gotten my wife into yanking and see how happy it has made her we want to take some long even overnighters! I bought what though would be a good seat but what a hunk of crap it is! My back and butt hurt worse than without it! I looked in my area for the foam I need and can only find it in 1 inch thickness, so I wii be contacting y'all for two pieces for my wife and myself. Thank you for making this video it has helped a old kayaker and a novice one who will surpass my ability! Thank you and God Bless!

      It will never be as dense and comfortable as a custom fit that is shaped to fit your own "configuration". I have replaced seats such as the these for customers who do not find them comfortable for a long haul. An off the shelf seat that is designed to fit "everyone" really fits no one perfectly.

    What wheel did you use for the foam carving part?

    • @OrcaboatsCa
      @OrcaboatsCa  Před 3 lety +1

      I used several in this video. On the drill is a wire wheel. The hand held yellow tool is a Stanley surform. I now use a grinder with an attachment called a Holey Galahad. Much faster but an expensive attachment and hard to find in local stores.

    • @varun009
      @varun009 Před 3 lety

    Is there no sealant or coating you can put on after? Thanks!

    • @OrcaboatsCa
      @OrcaboatsCa  Před 8 lety +3

      No sealant is required. The foam is high density, closed cell so will not absorb water. Hence you will see the holes drilled in the seat as you don't want to sit in a pool of water. May fade in colour over time.

    Not a great design you removed to much material.. little bit of cushion...👎🏻👎🏻

    • @OrcaboatsCa
      @OrcaboatsCa  Před 5 lety +4

      I disagree. The comfort does not come from the seat having any cushion. It comes from the fact that the shape fits perfectly to your body. Hence there is no pressure points. Much like a steel tractor seat. And the foam is not soft at all anyways so it is carved as thin as possible to rest on the bottom of the cockpit so that the paddlers center of gravity is as low as possible.
