- HERE YOU WILL SEE THE FDNY BATTLING A VERY FAST MOVING WIND DRIVE 3RD ALARM FIRE IN 2 PRIVATE DWELLINGS ON 9TH STREET IN THE GOWANUS AREA OF BROOKLYN IN NEW YORK CITY.
I truly appreciate how you capture these fires; minimal narration, allowing the radio chatter to tell the story, steady camera coverage, always looking for unique angles. You and Skyler have a Merry Christmas…I hope you don’t have anything to cover over the holidays.
WELL THAT MEANS A LOT FOR ME TO HEAR.....THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE KIND WORDS AND SUPPORT WILLIAM.....I WILL TELL SKYLER AND THANKS SO VERY MUCH.....MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES AS WELL.....
Great job, as always! Thank you for "being there," and God bless the FDNY for their amazing work. Merry Christmas!
YOU ARE MOST WELCOMED PETER AND OF COURSE THANKS SO MUCH, MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR.....
Thanks for all you do. I truly enjoy your videos.
Great coverage as usual John. I really appreciate the great job you do connecting us with radio chatter. It really brings things together. Other channels try but they don't get the transmissions as well as you do. That was an intense fire that was really burning hot. Thanks for another great video!

Watching from Texas & I have that sense of ‘panic’ clear down here. I cannot express the heroism of these fine men there in NY. Thank GOD for firefighters everywhere. Proud to say, I have several firefighters in the family & after watching your videos, I have a greater love for you all over this globe! ❤❤❤
Man I'd love to pick your brain on some of the work you do! Great video and great training tools for us smaller departments.
Great video JJ. You are the best. I thought the fire would get into the house next door because the wall was so thin and no fire wall between them. So sad for the people who lived there. Wishing you and Skyler a Merry Christmas with your families. Stay safe.

WOW Great Job Joe
JJ awsome footage this video will be used by everyone trust me on that ….😮Merry Christmas
Very good video as usual .
Fantastic coverage my brother. Miss these days in Brooklyn.
Great coverage, and twice now in 3 days with early arrival that's gotta feel good. Not surprised by the sudden burst of fires, but am however surprised (and a bit concerned) by how many majors in a row there've been. In all the years watching your videos I've never seen this many majors in such a short period of time. I wonder if the cuts in manpower are affecting the response capabilities of this world class department?
Right place at the right time JJ. The brothers really had their hands full with a 100 year old building and all of that wind. Glad there were no major injuries.
That was a nasty one, it looks like. When that wind comes up like that, there's almost nothing they can do to fight a fire.
You have been running like crazy, John! Just in the last couple days, you had the 5 alarm, I think one other and then this 3rd alarm. When are you going to slow down? Lol.
Thanks for the awesome content.
As always, stay safe out there, my friend.
OMG John again God Bless FDNY they are the Greatest. John you are over working with all the hours and then all the editing God Bless You, 🦌🌲🎄🙏🏻🙏🏻🔥🪵🎁🎁
Good Catch Brother, Stay Safe And Merry Christmas. Dizzy.
Busy Busy you’ve been these past couple of days. Unfortunately for the families affected during the holiday season. May God Bless all and have a safe and Merry Christmas. 🎄🎁
Another bad Christmas for a lot off ppl sadly, hope those firefighters are ok, good too see that they could stop the fire in that other house, great footage as usual John.
YES, I THINK EVERYONE IS OK AND YES, THEY DID A GREAT JOB AT STOPPING THE FIRE FROM FUTHER BURNING THE 2ND HOUSE.....THANKS SO MUCH ROLF, MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR MY GOOD FRIEND.....
John. thank you for your hard work with these videos. I hope all is well with the people from these homes. So sad, more so at this time of year, but at any time really. May the Lord bless them all. Thanks to the FDNY, EMS, first responders, police, you are all heroes around the world! John may you and your family have a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year!!

Brooklyn is stand together and will help this People's who is lost their Home in this horrible Fire !!!
Great Job F.D.N.Y !!! Thanks Squad 99 to filmed it All !!!
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL
Wow is all I can say, first that 5 alarmer in Queens then this 3 alarmer in Brooklyn, I'm beginning to think NYC is the capital of structure fires, it's just insane how many structure fires NYC has every year, especially in the late fall and all throughout the winter. As always great catch John and I will continue to say your coverage is the best on CZcams. Stay safe out there my friend.
Old structures, grandfathered garbage exempt of current electrical codes plus a failure to grasp that heaters aren't always safe in confined spaces or the residential electric can't handle the draw safely.
Thanks for your always compelling videos. I was on end of my couch until fire was put out. FDNY is made up of super and fearless people. May you and Squad 99 be healthy with dry feet and a working muffler. Happy Christmas and peace wishes for everyone in Brooklyn especially those affected by this fire.
WELL THAT MEANS A LOT FOR ME TO HEAR.....THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE KIND WORDS AND SUPPORT ALEX FOR ME AND THE CAR.....MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES AS WELL.....
Very nice! 😉
THANKS SO MUCH.....
Great Job john. Some one needs to talk with that Screaming Chief.
The "Tower/Ladders" are worth their weight in gold. FDNY purchased the first Mack Aerialscopes in the 70's which were the predesesor to todays Tower/ Ladders. The Co. i retired from, Whitehall 301, in a suburb of Pittsburgh,
PA had two "Scopes" for 40 years. I see the setup with two outrigers, and 4 corner jacks have not really changed since the first ones built. Seagrave certainly made a smart move to obtain the rights, Expensive but TOUGH, they are the best "Truck' money can buy!
I TOTALLY AGREE.....THE ARE WORK HORSES INDEED.....THEY ARE USED VERY OFTEN HERE IN NEW YORK CITY.....THANKS SO MUCH.....
What a crazy sene prat dor everyone envoled lets roll with the best nyfd and JJ 😮😮
Good catch be safe you have been busy
WOW! That was one fast growing fire. I am thankful the firefighters are so experienced. They all work so well together. Fire is so scary.
God bless you all.
Great job guy's/gals 🎉🎉🎉 also ladder 131 knocking that down 🎉🎉🎉
YES INDEED AND THANKS SO MUCH.....
thanks
Wow, you are one busy man! Great video, JJ! ❤
Thank Heaven for no major injuries or worse. I couldn't even begin to imagine living in such tight quarters with all of those houses like that. This is a prime example of one of my all-time worst nightmares. Can you imagine being at work and getting a phone call from someone who tells you that your place is on fire? 😢
I have to say that when the Chief said the department's response time from call to first arrival is just under 4 minutes, that just blew my mind, knowing how huge NYC is!
Kudos to the FDNY and to you, John. Thanks again! 👍🏻
the homes they build today wont last half the test of time like these new york home are.
I found this fire to be of particular interest to me. Mainly because in my childhood days I lived with my parents in this type of housing in East New York Brooklyn. All the houses on my block were built during the late 1890s and very early 1900s. They were all wood frame construction, mostly 2 or 3 family houses, and most were attached. The particular house I lived in was 2 floors 2 family, wood frame, built in 1910 and was attached to the houses to our left and to our right. Even as a very young child I would sometimes wonder what might happen to our house if the attached houses to the right or left of us were to catch fire. I would envision that the fire might burn right through the wall and come inside our place. One time I even asked my Dad about it and he told me they usually have a "fire wall" between the houses to protect a fire from burning through. But I still used to worry about it and I would think "what if the builder didn't put in a fire wall like he was supposed to" or "what if the fire wall doesn't work as intended". I am not sure if we shared a common cockloft with either of the houses next to us. The height of the roof of the house to our right was the same height level as ours so I guess it is possible they shared a common cockloft. This video answered some of my questions from all those years ago about how an attached exposure could be effected by fire.
BTW a really sad loss of property. I feel bad for the families who were burned out of their homes, and right before the holidays. I hope they will be comfortable relocated until such time as their homes can be rebuilt.
I assume you bunker up for your safety. If, so NY is lucky to have someone to capture the response which can be used for training. As a volunteer, I used to do it for so the departments in Alaska and WA State which was used for training and investigations. Great job!
You are correct! They are old buildings with vinyl siding tacked on. I am still surprised at the lack of an adequate firewall.
WELL, THEY WERE SO OLD BUT I HEAR YA POINT BOB.....HOPE YOU ARE WELL, THANKS SO MUCH AND MERRY CHRISTMAS.....
I swear JJ, everytime I see a fire that intense, all I think about it lithium ion batteries. That was an inferno coming out of the upper rear floors. Thanks for all you do!
Amazing job as usual. I swear you always aim the camera at exactly where I want to look. Is it me, or does it appear that members seem reluctant to bring in the buckets? I obviously don't know anything about firefighting but it just seems with wooden houses on both sides, get the big water on it.. Thanks again.
you are great! my question is why do they leave the ladder on roof when flames are so close? weaken ladder!!
Emergency escape
That was one horrendously hot fire!! As usual FDNY took on the Demon and turned it into a wimpering babe!! That might have taken the whole block!! I would truly like to know what happened to get that started. Thank you JJ for your great work both pictures and narration. Hope Squad 99 gets well soon! Love Tower Ladder 131: Red Hook - The Happy Hookers!!
❤️🔥🚒❤️🔥
Great catch John! What an inferno on the top floor! These buildings look like relatively new construction (viewing the siding materials, and the relatively weak fire wall between exposure 4 of the fire building and the adjoining building).. I might have mentioned that may dad's familly were centered in Red Hook and I am familiar with this area. I had an extended Italian family "cousin" who grew up on Coles St a few doors from FDNY Ladder 101/Engine202 where he loved to hang out.. After he graduated Law School and passed the Bar, he applied to the FDNY and became a firfighter. He eventually wound up with Rescue 2 and was tragically killed in a Brooklyn chop-shop fire in the 1990s. If you head down 9th St toward the waterfront, you will find the Louis Valentino Jr Memorial Park and Wharf, named in his honor. A true son of RedHook. I wish you a Merry and Blessed Christmas, and a Happy and Healthy New Year.
The siding might be new, but the building is over 100 years old.
Yes, thanks! It was obvious once thaey started stripping off the siding. Re new construction, I was thinking of the Edgewater NJ fire and the 15 homes that burned in Easton PA.@@emt5330
@@emt5330 probably more like 130 years old
The guy at 44:53 is unreal. Seriously???
You've been very busy this last week or so. Always appreciated.
I just don't understand why they don't get the tower ladder into immediate operation rather than risking lives of members on the third floor? In every instance it is clearly effective once in operation. Why the hesitancy to do this in fire after fire?
Guys are up there searching for people. What's visible from outside might look a lot different on inside. Close a door might give that little extra time to make a move.
-Because there were firefighters working the fire from the inside and searching
-And you do not use large bore exterior lines when there are FF/victims inside as that is how you injure or kill people
-Further, there multiple top floor units involved, simply blasting water into a window isnt going to do squat for the deeper rooms
-Exterior operations are defensive/last resort
-Interior attacks are offensive
Ladder 131 w that quick moving of the ladder and that hose on that fire in front 🎉🎉🎉
I literally walked by this building on my 9th Street walk for my channel about 2 weeks ago. Crazy.
Fully involved upon arrival! A brief glance at the material the fire building is made of - wood again - and we know why the fire is raging like that! Even the plastic on the outside is burning, allowing the flames to creep across the facade! What does this remind me of? It's the Grenfell Tower fire disaster of 2017!
If I lived in a building like this one, I would have sprinklers and standpipes installed, in order to kill a fire right away, because once it's really going, it's all over!
Only fires in a refinery are worse than that, aren't they?
Thanks again for this video, Merry Christmas, J.K.
John, does NYC do automatic move ups during a multiple alarm fire? Stu
This was my childhood home till i got married in 1974. Lived in that top flr apartment.Sad to see this .
SORRY TO HEAR THAT.....THANKS SO MUCH.....
Millions of dollars of equipment there and no water being put on the fire, amazing!!!!!
THEY WERE PUTTING WATER ON IT FROM OTHER ANGLES AND INTERNALLY.....SHOOTING A TOWER LADDER STREAM INTO A BUILDING WITH MEMBERS IN INSIDE IS VERY DANGEROUS FOR THEM ALL.....THANKS SO MUCH.....
the fire have been coming fast brad
These videos are consistently fascinating. As a layperson though, I'm hoping someone could answer this question: why did the tower ladder (in this case 131) have to wait so long before it could start shooting water in through the third floor windows, with heavy fire roaring right in front of them? I see this approach in most, if not all, of the FDNY videos. I heard that they had to make sure all the firefighters were off the third floor before the tower ladder was given the green light to activate. Would these firefighters be in danger if they were still on that floor and the tower ladder began shooting water in through the window? It seems that in Europe, they arrive on scene and if there is visible fire out any windows, they immediately start hosing it from the outside. Just what I've noticed; I'm curious as to the disparity in tactics. Either way, all due respect to these guys 👍👍
Most certainly, injuries not only from the stream itself but the ensuing steam, you’d steam cook any potential victims/members working. FDNY does aggressive interior attacks (water from the inside); UK tends to do transitional/defensive operations. Interior attacks tend to (not always) work out better for potential trapped occupants. Push the fire out rather than further into said room/space.
@@superbuff861That makes sense; thank you for the insight 👍
Euro construction is more masonry and compartmental than US is. Therefore many fires are fought transitionally rather than aggressive interior attack style.
JJ, it’s 23 here in Minnesota. I have my gloves 😂. I hope you made a go bag.
OH WOW AND YES.....STAY WARM AND OF COURSE THANKS SO MUCH.....
Such a devastating fire and so close to Christmas as well. Hope everyone got out safe.
YES, IT IS VERY SAD AND DEVASTATING INDEED.....;o( THANKS SO MUCH.....
Man this really seemed like an atypical response and attack, disorganized and a lot of confusion with that 3rd floor. I was at one point yelling at my screen out of frustration just from watching this unfold the way that it did. That extension into exposure 4 sure did seem like it was avoidable. I feel so bad for the families affected by this fire with is being the holiday season.
It takes too long to mount an interior attack. 5 mins and they are just Laying a 2 1/2. Before 911 this fire would have been out before a second was called. Rescue 2 is searching for victims but where are the lines?
Nice Catch, Steady camera!
Wow, getting water on that felt like it took exceptionally long time. Shame the ladders didn’t have w water till 15 minutes in. Wondering if the could have avoided extension if water was used on top floor earlier.
There were members inside from the front putting water on the fire. You could see water blowing out the windows and the flames backing down. When fire extended into the next building is when they used the bucket, but before that had to wait for members to back out of the fire floor.
The fire building and the exposure share a common cockloft. From the get go, you can see water coming out of the windows from the inside.
The thing is, the fire building is constructed entirely of wood, so it is far from surprising that the fire grew to the proportions that it did.
Thanks for clarifying that they were battling interior at the beginning. Makes sense now.
John, awesome Job on this fire. The members had a tiger by the tail on this one, but they stood their ground and kicked ass. Always loved these kind of working fires. Had to dig deep to win, but the feeling afterwards was fantastic. Great Job again by FDNY. John, any way I could reach out to you privately.? I have a scanner radio like you have in 99, that I want to find a home for. dennis
‘stood their ground and kicked ass’? Jesus wept 🙈
Now he’s spraying water
Had crews inside doing searches, had to get primaries in and crews out before opening up with a master stream. Life over property.
At 29:42 minutes one could see the construction of the walls. Thay were made of wooden slats. As you mention in another video , that is fule. Covered with layers of siding it just burns and pops out. Well Merry Christmas from my family to yours. And we pray for ereryone. 🎅🙏🙏 Leo
Question John...why did ladder 131 take so long to get water on the 3rd floor fire??.....
