Wing chun blocks/interceptions are quite useful but most of the time it fails because most wing chun guys are too robotic. Jeff Chan is definitely more fluid and could probably perform WC techniques much better than traditional WC practitioners.

Abslotutely right, they become very riggid from keeping structure which has it place, but very is difficult to mantain in modern combat. Although you have some more naturla styles like Sifu David Sinclair or Applied wing chun.

    • @adim00lah
      @adim00lah Před 4 měsíci +5

@@uli9084 Keepin your structure all ridgid like that is not the way wing chun is suppose to be used. You can't develop inner body sensetivity all ridgid like that.
Wing chun is a very natural style on it's own, people just don't spar with the system often enough, and they don't have a good teacher to show them how to use the forms to develop their structure.
Wing chun is a soft style, so ridgity is the anathema of the style.

Welcome to parallelism in martial arts. And this is why I still love WC handwork. It’s just so much faster with the simultaneous punching and defending. I think you could definitely augment your striking game if you add WC to it. If you clinch with your opponent you can hit, elbow, throw them almost at will.

Kevin, just for curiosity, would you have a solution in an environment, where you cannot do the typical wing chun routine, like when jeff would be crouching like in boxing, where you basically had no chance to do typical wing chun bridge techniques? In theory this is no unlikely scenario, if you consider that back in the day wing chun has to have fought hung gar, which has very low stances too. And is fighting a lot of time from low to upwards while crouching.

I have dealt with many Wing Chun styles so far and the one that has impressed me the most for fighting is Philipp Bayer's style. Maybe it is interesting for you. This is even more in line with your concepts than this. Since the elbow plays a more crucial role in hitting and covering at the same time and is therefore more attack-oriented.
Big thumbs up for your work, your passion, your skills and openness! Unlike many haters who are blind to great concepts. 🙏

I notice Jeff is doing everything with the mind set of gloves are still on so the palm of the hands to parry/block is a little harder to do so the parry with the palms is out of the picture, while Nate is coming from the mindset of a street self defense and not wearing gloves so the hand/palms becomes apart of the parry/block. Both of those deflection/defense works in any scenario we just have to be aware when the gloves are off and on. Great video about Wing Chun and martial arts overall, Respect.

So on your first high outside block, the risk u take is when your opponent commits he can easily fold his straight punch into an elbow attack on your chest. The wing chun blocks pivots his position wherre he cannot continue the line, hence is safer to turn your opponent.
Your second example of the straight out block works with gloves, in combat your arm can easily be grabbed on the backwards retreating motion after the failed puch. Thus your block get trapped easier (when not wearing gloves) risking getting pulled of balance since your arm is outstretched.

Great video guys. I mention this quite often but people tend to take a grandiose idea of what Bruce Lee was saying without his journey. The research of books and learning with various teachers only to come to the conclusion that fighting is fighting. The traditionalist wants preserve movement ignoring the erratic nature of the fight and disregarding sport. The modern tends to ignore the wisdom of the those who left behind the movements in these traditional training methods. Only when you are open to learning do you see that martial arts are essentially the same with the principles of what you are trying to achieve, how you are trying to achieve it and for what purpose. Also I wanted to add that I believe Wing Chun's aim is to force or lead the confrontation into a in close hand fighting/grappling situation where punches and attacks have to be truly considered because you are so close similar to bjj just on the ground. I trained this a ton during heavy sparring, you must turn and the hook is blocked but you version is faster and maybe stronger. Head movement, i thought that the whole time training wing chun but we moved much more than just forward. Example you are surprised or not close enough to jam, so you step back (kind like head movement but much slower). Im always impressed, your inspiring me to go back and train maybe in your programs online.

That karate high block should be accompanied by a level change against straight punches or used against dropping attacks (hammerfists, axe kicks, etc). You shouldn't just stand there and use it.
Sometimes a longer version of the high block appears when you're very bladed and using the front arm and footwork to defend against everything.
The way I would block a hook as a tang soo do guy would be similar, but there's the option of using that open hand to grab and start doing judo.
Everybody ends up doing a little chi sao if they box bare knuckle. You'll even see some kyokushin guys doing it.
Wing chun could really help someone out in that transitional zone between striking and grappling, which is why I think it's important for wing chun and praying mantis guys to allow some basic takedowns in their sparring.
Wing chun has a lot going for it, I think the main thing holding it back is the relatively weak sparring and competition culture. But I don't see why it wouldn't work, and it's very cool.

Nice exchange, hope to see more!
1:12 Why not cut to a punch at the same time? That's in the Wing Chun second form, 1st section (after the preamble)
1:54 problem with starting from the eyebrows is if he strikes upwards, Nate can bowl through if he's close enough. Safer for this shot to start lower and aim at the solar plexus. That being said, has to be trained with and without gloves to see the difference (starting at eyebrow level might be easier with gloves)
3:31 Nate should be stepping towards the attacker's shoulder around which the hook pivots to shut it down faster- opportunity to improve footwork. Even a pivot would be enough. Generally start with footwork before talking about hands!
5:10 Why didn't you hit him with your loaded hand at the same time you run the 360 block? The punch is more important than the block. In fact, you could replace the 360 block with a punch if you felt like gambling that you've got better angles, footwork and vectors than your opponent
6:06 This is a good point that I'm happy to concede- Muay Thai fighters are better at distance management at range so a 360 block that could be either is faster than a round or straight Ving Tsun counter. Not my own preferred strategy but it's valid for distance management and sniping
7:31 Thanks for sharing this one. Probably better with gloves and easier to train, if less comprehensive. Interesting that it transitions into a clinch- for Wing Chun we'd avoid moving to a clinch in order to keep striking in the pocket. Will try this one of yours, myself!
10:08 a lot of time talking about hands, but don't see discussion of accompanying footwork
10:56 no head movement because when you're in the pocket and aiming at the opponent's solar plexus, head movement becomes less effective. Especially if there are no gloves involved. It really comes down to discussing spacing and footwork as part of the previous point
11:10 there is no overcommit on the cross in Wing Chun because you'd ideally be closer in "bent arm range", and the arm would be loaded to find the gaps in their guard. That's the actual point of Chi Sau. The more dangerous time for a Wing Chun practitioner is learning timing so they don't walk into round kicks or double jabs
11:20 before using a shoulder roll, can try jamming an attack first with your elbow at an acute angle (bong sau)
12:17 agreed with Nate here. Use structure, use footwork, hit the enemy, control the hands. No need for head movement.
13:13 nice laap sau to bridge from that range

When you talking about minimal movement for the long guard I think one thing that is important to talk about is that with 14-16oz gloves your hands and arms move a lot slower when trying to parry. Ive found that karate style blocking is more effective bare-knuckle or MMA.

I use a similar long guard, but its a cross between silat, aikido, box, and taichi, but for only box, i use a cross between box and wingchun very similar to yours but in southpaw style or peekaboo closing angles in the long moving the center of mass and hard peekaboo counter punch flow

So, I study a style known as yong chun white crane, (btw yong chun is a city in fujian province, it's mandarin, in Cantonese it's actually wing chun) Our style almost certainly heavily influenced both wingchun and karate and this is very similar to what we do we put a lot of focus on trapping, controlling the center line, and using a lot of open hand strikes, (seriously, we have almost no punches in our style but do have forearm strikes and various openhanded strikes) And just like no wing Chun. We focus on controlling the center line and most of our striking and grappling techniques, Are focused on controlling the upper body meaning the arms, the hands and the torso and that general area of the body, And I can see these ideas are very prevalent in wing chun, especially in exercises like chi sao, which has many similarities to the drills we have

I used to do fencing competitively before I began MMA. My footwork was the best and it allowed me to become the U19 provincial champ back in the day.
Although I am right handed, my style adjusted so well with Southpaw and over all how the wing chun operates. I use long guard naturally in exactly the same way as wing chun and have great distance management capability and my left round house is absoultely devastating. I have not been trained in wing chun per se but I have been able to successfully incorporate several elements of wing chun quite successfully in my technique because the muscles involved are mostly the same in fencing.. Have experimented a lot with them in my sparring. My mates also joke that I fight like Bruce Lee.

Thing of beauty that video. Wing Chun is definetely great to add with other styles of fighting, it adds a lot of flow and variety. We can see in MMA this thing works, Sean Strickland is a champion even using a llot of wing chun added to his boxing and mma overal style. I believe it could work also for other fighting disciplines, and for street fight also

💡Sir, I think you just made it possible for MMA and Wing-Chun practitioners to speak each other's language. 🤔💭This is like The West learning how to speak Eastern and vice versa.💥 And the funny thing is, they indeed are extremely similar to the point where a block from one style ends up being executed in the complete opposite fashion of the other‼️

Looks like apart from the 360 block you would like use footwork to cirlce to your right?

I try to use and teach a flow between the 2 guards. You will see sometimes (especially thai fighters) when an aggressive attacker like a Muay Matt already got inside, the defensive fighter still try to use the long guard and ended up eating some big punches or even getting knocked out. A good example is Muangthai VS Liam Harrison.

all respect to sifu nate but even the little clip of him sparring with jeff shows the issues of WC and I would say traditional ma. When you put the gloves on and spar they all look like guys that are not used to being hit and countered and it is too robotic. I left Kenpo 20 years ago because of this issue and embraced kick boxing and muay thai. It has been monmental in giving me so much more insight into how a real fight plays out. Not that there aren't aspects that Traditional MA can't show us such as distance control, body mechanics, and foot work but the sooner a person puts the gloves on the sooner they can actually progress and put it all together. Thanks Jeff for all you have done to further the arts and for the respect you show for all the arts! Keep on keeping on!

    • @ShredST
      @ShredST Před 4 měsíci

TMA practitioners are robotic because they are so caught up in their theories and principles that they are bewildered when a realistic-ish fight doesn't conform to their expectation. They need to understand that their theories and principles are not prescriptive. It's up to them to CREATE situations in which their theories and principles are applicable because a real fight is endlessly variable.

I started doing Muay Thai two years ago after too many years of Wing Chun from two different lineages. Definitely having the big16 oz gloves over my hands really disables many Wing Chun hand techniques, but sparring in general is the main key to test your own skills, the closest to a real application, and to figure out what works and not for you (many kung fu moves only work in demo mode).

During the straight punch defences, Nate is actually making a slight angle for the deflections. So, it becomes vulnerable to anybody with good positioning. The first part of the defence against hooks require too much precision. Even advanced get the length or angle wrong often and have their block battered through and get struck anyway. The second part of defence against hooks is basically a long guard which every striking combat sport uses. Both kinds of defences shown, straight and round, are vulnerable to feints due to how the require extending your arms away from your body. Also, in an MMA context, extending your limbs like that is a beautiful invitation to grapplers.
The rest is the same stuff that's taught in muay thai but with fancy Chinese words. Which is fine.
Jeff, I think you and Nate are *making* them work because you're wonderful, talented athletes, not because these moves are better ideas than the more conventional moves.

If you watch Sean Strickland everyone talks about his Philly she’ll but his most important tool is his straight arm punch Perry’s deflections.
