Yes they are excellent. That and my disdain for small screens when trying to program are the two reasons that I will be keeping my 16 until the apple silicon version comes out. Although, looking at what the 13-inch can do, I am already impressed and if they sold it in a 16-inch chassis, I would probably buy it today. Although, eight of the high performance cores should be excellent and I'm betting the TDP is quite a bit higher as well as having a larger GPU so the 16 in should be a monster.
I ordered the 2020 MBA Intel i5 the first day it came out. I immediately cancelled the order when I saw that the fan wasn't connected to the CPU via heat pipe. I am now typing this on a 2020 M1 MBA.

I had the 2020 MBA and ended up upgrading to the MBP but sans M1 (unfortunately got it before the announcement of M1) - the difference between the fan is night and day

To be fair they absolutely fucked the cooling in their laptops especially the air, Linus Tech Tips did a video about how bad it was but even with good cooling the m1 would run cooler there is no doubt about it.

I have a 15' Macbook pro and was about to upgrade to the 16 inch but ended up ordering the new M1 13 inch. I totally agree with his tests. It looks like everyone running these tests is getting the same results. I unfortunatelly can't wait for the 16 inch M1 to come out next year. Great video.

@@shawn4626 for me at least I needed a new computer ASAP for work. I have an old 2015 MBP and I pretty much ran the thing to the ground. It was so slow that it was hindering my workflow so this was a must buy for me. The good thing is that it looks like these new chips and computers are going to be more affordable moving forward so I’m okay with buying a Mac mini in a year with the newer chips and keeping my 13” MBP.

Why is it a mistake? I have the 16" inch as well. To be honest, I tried the M1 in the Apple Store and it feels the same. If I would ask you, are you really a guy who uses Final Cut Pro on a daily basis? Everyone on here pretends they are either a musician or a video editor. Not gonna lie, the M1 performs really well in those fields. But other than that, you don't feel a difference in using it. Wow, its 4 degrees warmer what a result. Its 10 seconds faster, wow! Don't focus too much on consumerism, you very fortunate with your purchase, remember that. Cheers.

That's not true at all. I'm not an Intel fanboy, but Intel (and also AMD) build x86 architecture CPUs. That's a complete other architecture for processors. You can't really compare them.
The ARM architecture is a more restricted architecture and you can do less with them. For Servers x86 is better then ARM. At least for now. Guess what? Intel and AMD also make Server CPUs.

The next 16 " will have the m1 chip with more cores (m1x, 12 core, double the amount of performance cores), a mini led display and thanks to that also a 1080p webcam and the battery will probably last 25-30 hours 🤤
Microphone quality on the 13” is much better than on your 16”.

Though it seems like that, but I won’t buy Intel Mac anymore.
Even if you can find a brand new 16” like he has for 1/2 the price, you will be getting a laptop with less performance than a brand new 13” or even air. If you need the screen size, go for it. But that’s what you’re paying for.
You want to pay a huge apple tax to have the best, go right ahead. But that fact remains, buying used, your buying a mac that was worth 2-3x the price a little while back, which still could have 4 years or more of life left. Your buying the same machine that a few years ago apple advertised as the absolutely best they had. If you have a 6 year old mac or are money conscious, buying a very good performing intel based mac may not be the highest performing out there , but it's probably still MORE than enough to get the job done. Just my 2 cents.

What a great real-world benchmark test suite! Sure, I may have a quibble or two on minor statements but it's been tricky to find videos showing hands-on real world program tests aside from Apple and others' documentation of the marketing instead of tests. Great video, subbed!

@@hf2943 The peak performance is nearly identical but the MBP has fans where the MBA does not, so the MBA will throttle itself after about 10 minutes of max performance whereas the MBP can go full speed pretty much indefinitely.
@@PromotedPawn it also doesn't seem like the M1 MBA throttles as much or for as long as an Intel machine (which is crazy because it got no fans) It's just a no brainer to get the M1 unless you depend on the totally unsupported apps.
Mine said arriving at December 4th, has now changed to JANUARY 28TH YEP U READ THAT RIGHT, ordered same day as release

Nice video, as always. It would be nice if you could make some tests with more graphics in Final Cut Pro and some 2D and 3D scenes in Motion 5 with and without Motion blur. I think that could be the only cases where the Macs with AMD GPUs should be faster.

I paid $2400 for a 16 inch on Nov 2nd... as soon as i saw the M1 performance, I returned it and bought a M1 for $1300. Best decision I ever made.
It depends what you need it for. I just bought a 16 inches MBP for software development. No containers in M1 yet is a bummer for us.
@@warlockhaseo3642 m1 is not ready yet! for full stack development, there is hiccups from day 1 and you shouldn't be treated as beta tester after spending a more then thousand dollar , you need a machine which is ready at day 1, and for that Intel will be that for next 2-3 years, after that you can sell of that intel one and get m3 with full apps support.

@@LileshJadav If you don't need the 16 inch you could just get a second hand 13 inch MBP for a lot cheaper because people are selling cheap now. 2-3 years later the MBA will be twice as fast as your Intel 16 inch so it wouldn't worth much.

You don't know how much I appreciate the thoroughness of all of your comparisons. I retired my 16" MBP that I speced to the 2.3ghz i9, 32gb ram, and Pro 5500M so it is now powering the wife's work station. I didn't do any thorough testing for comparison but after using my M1 MB Air in Final Cut AND PP I might be a little salty that I bought the MBP and it never really wowed me. No, it doesn't export a video as fast but the editing and timeline is silky smooth and the portability makes it a clear winner for me.
Oh, and the battery life. Being able to edit, export, and upload a full 20 minute YT video without having to plug in is life changing.
M1 is king. M1X will be the dictator!

Looking at all your videos together, since the M1 MBP > 16" MBP and M1 MBP is 'neck-to-neck' with M1 MBA.. It's a no-brainer to go for the M1 MBA ◡̈

Woooooord I just did the biggest change my nvidia/Corsair pc recently died ( 2014-2021 ) and I finally decided to invest in a Mac book pro 13” as I use A LOT of Logic Pro x and it’s hilarious I charge like once every 2 days but now that I’m more used to the whole laptop thing again I get like 3-4 days 😂😂😂😂 it’s actually amazing I never thought apple could blow my mind and they definitely did it this time with the 12 pro max and the M1 it’s kinda overwhelming sometimes 😅😅

The only thing that’s keeping me from selling my 15” MBP is the lack of the two additional TB3 ports on the M1 model, which I need tom run my entire setup. As soon as Apple puts out a model with four ports I think it will be a no brainer for me to sell my current one together with the eGPU and make the switch.

Hi guys and thanks for the great and super complete videos ! I have just a little comparison request (if possible of course...) I am a graphic designer and i made a long road with my Macbook Pro Mid-2015 (still doing the job and running Big Sur nicely). First time i am interested in a change ever since but the M1 seems being from another planet... Could you compare a previous generation Intel Macbook Pro with 16Gb of RAM and an M1 Macbook Air with 8Gb of RAM ? I am considering it to save a little more money but still hesitating... Thanks again for your great job !

Cool. I personally can't work with a 13-inch screen. It's too small! The Pro 16-inch M1X is almost here though. Now that's a beast worth investing in.
This is a perfect example of how Benchmarks don’t tell the entire story. The 16” was only slightly better in certain benchmarks but real world performance the M1 really shines.
i just got the 16 inch mbp over the m1 because of harddrive space, ram, and the larger screen. still pretty amazing what apple has done tho. im not sure if i quite trust it yet for heavy duty professional stuff, but the M1 has a very promising future. If they had offered the M1 with a 16 inch screen with 1TB SSD and 32 gb of RAM i wouldve gotten it. Also not being able to bootcamp is a big pain in the ass.

Not really, I use it for coding and it enough, no need to edit 4k videos, commonly these comparisons are aimed to people to works on audiovisuals but not everyone uses an MBP for this purpose (Remember that MaxTech said that MBP 16 was insane, and then we have this video saying the opposite just to have views).

The heat on the palmrest at 11:11 is from the battery that has been supplying so much power (remember around 60W just for the CPU?)
Knew that from one occasion I was playing Apex, the palm rest got super hot, and the laptop died not long after, I realized I didn’t plug it in yet 🤣
Anyway, I was so excited for this, I never realized the video was almost 30 mins long! Fantastic video as always, hopefully you and everyone there can have a good rest 🤣
Personally, Imma just stay with mine and look forward to how great the 16-inch Apple Silicon Mac would be 🔥 especially needed the 4 USB ports and the larger screen real estate

Can you imagine future M chips? Wow. Can’t wait! I don’t expect to upgrade until at least 5 or so years later since my laptop still works.
