    The gap between Air and Pro has never been this small while the price difference pretty much stayed the same. The only way for me (poor student) to justify extra $300 would be a redesign of the Pro which is likely happening next year. But since that didnt happen this year, I just ordered M1 Air :)

      5 months later I'm looking to get the M1 Air today. Just base model to do some basic mac and iOS development on. Out of the 3 things mentioned as the main differences only the 100 extra Nits brightness on the Pro is actually an advantage as I don't really rate the touch bar (having had a Mac with one previously.) and I prefer passive cooling on devices ever since I first got the 2017 Surface Pro i5

    I've recently picked up a used 2020 m1 pro and air, with the air being the maxed-out model. You've done an excellent job listing out the differences and explaining which one of those differences is actually a pro vs. con when comparing the MacBook pro to the air. For my use case, the pros of the Macbook pro were more "nice to have" features rather than actual need features, and since the MacBook air I came with was the optional upgraded 8-core version, I went with the air. BUT if the Pro had the ports or more ports like you've mentioned, as my dusty 2014 MacBook pro, I might've just stuck with the lower specced MacBook pro. I hate dongles. Also I didn't like that accidental touches to the touch bar on the pro either so that actually was a con for me. GREAT JOB on this video again!

  • @Roaming50
    @Roaming50 Před 3 lety +5

    Good video. I ordered a custom Air. 8-core GPU with 1TB. I did not upgrade the Ram though. For my workflow and based on testing in other channels it didn’t seem like it would affect the laptop that much. Yes my export times from FCP may be a little longer but once I’m done editing I don’t really care about that. I’d rather put the $200 saved into the storage. Also I save around a $100 through a work purchase plan so can’t complain. 😁
    The NITs difference is the only thing that I might regret but I don’t like typing on the Pro because of that sharp edge and the Touch Bar doesn’t do it for me. The only issue with the custom build is the now 6-week lead time for the Air.

    I've been running my late 2010 Macbook Pro for about 5 years now. About 2 years ago I upgraded it to 16GB of RAM and a 256SSD and it greatly improved the performance, but with school going entirely online for now it is completely bogged down by everything I need to have running. I can't wait to upgrade to the M1 MBA. A decade of improved hardware should blow my mind when it comes to getting everything done.

    Great video as always, Gary! With my workload, I could probably totally get by with the Air. But, the microphones are a bit better on the Pro. With as many Zoom calls and other things as I'm doing, it's tempting to go with the higher quality. Not sure it really matters, though, since both webcams still are... well... less than stellar... I think that 30W charger is awesome because it weights less and takes less space. I hate it that many manufacturers of compact/portable devices forget to mention how big and heavy their chargers are. Just look at Intel NUCs. 60w charger is bigger than the NUC itself 😭

    Both really amazing, having owned both however I do prefer the pro.
    Personally I love the touchbar after installing various apps to make it more useful. I also love the design, the larger battery, the brighter screen will be helpful outside, the larger trackpad is nice, and I like that even though both of these macbooks have no issues with thermals, the MBP runs so much noticeably cooler to the touch which is amazing when using on a lap. All of these additions IMO make the MBP worthy of its price over the air, but the air is definitely an amazing laptop.

    I personally chose the macbook pro 13 "16gb ram.
    For a basic use the air is fine and the differences with the pro are zero.
    Internet, writing, small photo editing and video editing are absolutely identical.
    The difference is seen when using the macbook outside the home (20% greater brightness, greater autonomy), when you do not use the internal speakers (the audio of the pro is more full-bodied and less crackling), when you use programs that require the use of the trackpad (much larger in the pro), when doing fairly heavy photo and video editing where the more powerful gpu helps, where the fan keeps the rendering performance identical for many hours (while on the air they drop a lot) and where the higher ram helps to avoid writing to ssd with consequent premature wear of the disk (swap memory). the question then is: what should we do with the macbook? basic use or medium-high level amateur / professional use?

    I love the touch bar. Especially some of the rad mods! Did you know you can customize your touch bar and even give it hepatic feedback? I was kinda disappointed with the internal
    speakers on the pro. Maybe the sound is better once you use an equalizer?

    I just went for the MacBook Pro but it was a tough choice, I was going through the check out on the air and just suddenly decided on the MacBook Pro at the last minute just because it will be my video editing machine.. It’s a tough call. I played it safe with the pro but I could have easily used the Air

    I’m guessing that in a couple years, the distinction between Air and Pro would have greater distinction again because of a bigger M chip line.

    On the MacBook Air 8GB RAM, using Final Cut, can you edit 3 stream of 4K 10bit from your Pana S5 (at least, that's what I think you have), and a) not stutter when playback or scrubbing and b) export faster than real time?

    I’m really thinking about getting a MBA & maxing the specs but not sure if it’s worth it over the pro, ima put 16 gb in the air with a 1 TB SSD, rather than the original 13 pro, just wondering if the fan really makes that big of a difference, I’ll be running mainly Logic Pro, advice ?

    • @WidePhotographs
      @WidePhotographs Před 2 lety

      Do not get the Air for gaming because it will overheat in minutes of playing a game. I had the M1 MacBook Air and while gaming for 5-10 minutes on Apple Arcade, it felt too warm for comfort. Having the fans from the MacBook Pro will prolong the M1 life and consistent reliable power.

    Basically, for the same price you can buy a MacBook Air with 8 cores and 512gb for $1249 vs the MacBook pro with 8 cores and 256gb and fan for $1299. The cheaper mba has 7 cores and 256gb $999. You are choosing between the fan on the mbp and the memory on the mba, mostly.

    I notice you are using Da Vince Resolve (Which I also use). I have the base model MacBook Pro 2017 model and thinking of getting a MBP M1. Is it significantly faster? Or just marginal?
    Also how does streaming perform? Have you tried things such as eCamm Live? These are the crucial decisions for me as eCamm live is running sloooowwww for me on 2017 (although I can possibly make files smaller and other fixes too).

    Three weeks ago, I was in the market for a new 13 inch laptop. I decided to purchase the Microsoft Laptop Surface Go but it was to slow and just did not feel right. Then, I spent a lot more money and purchased the Dell Inspiron 13 2 in 1 4k. I had to restore the computer 3 times because it kept going into sleep mode. After watching some of your and other videos as well as speaking with the Best Buy rep, I got the 13 inch MacBook Pro for $1,099. Since I got it I have not used my other laptop the Dell G7 7500 with a 10750 and 64 GB of RAM, with a RTX 2070 MaxQ with an OLed 4k screen . I just keep going back to the M1 MacBook Pro.

    Thanks for the review. I am still running my first MacBook Pro from 2015 but can't upgrade now to the latest and greatest OS no matter how much I delete from my 128GB HD (how the hell can an OS require more than 30GB to install anyway!?!) and thinking maybe its getting time to buy a new machine. I am all for spending less and I don't really do any heavy lifting work wise so tempted by the Air BUT I am dubious about the long term durability of a machine without fans....maybe I wait another year and see what the real world says...
