      If you look at the draw we're unlikely to play anyone good until the Ro8. Ro16 will be 3rd place from Group D/E/F. As much as we've been shit we've basically conceded zero chances so far. Denmark scored a complete worldie otherwise never looked like scoring.
      Southgate's never been knocked out by a non top side so I think we'll make it to the Ro8 where we probably play Switzerland or Italy/Croatia. And tbh neither of them are anything special so might shithouse our way to the semis without ever playing a decent side.

    • @bengreenbank
      @bengreenbank Před 6 dny +2

      Absolutely right. Tactics is the entire issue. If you put Ancelotti in charge he wouldn't drop Foden or Kane. He'd get all our best players on the pitch tell them to press high up the pitch, get on the ball take risks and score goals/create chances.
      We have an unbelievable selection of attacking players. Teams like Serbia/Denmark/Slovenia should be absolutely shitting themselves facing us.
      We don't press, we don't take any risks in possession or make any attempt to create chances or score goals, our full backs don't push up the field to pen them in. That's a tactical choice.

Reality check needed. And the excuses were bollocks , the pitch was terrible (it was) , the heat was terrible (yeap) , but Denmark is not an exotic country and their players played on the same pitch and really they are pro players so it is not better for them than England. And even though England has got the star players , but the danish team has players from Barcelona, Roma , Anderlecht, Man U, Benfica, Tottenham, Brentford, Leicester, Milan etc etc and my point is that a team of pro good players playing as a team and with a game plan will almost always beat a star team with no game plan.

    He is straight up copying the current Italy set up, but doest have the personnel. Its funny because All he has to do is swap Saka to the left, tell Trippier not to go forward and just invert, and tell Walker to be the only one that overlaps. Or Play Dunk or Gomez as the "left back". The only thing that doesnt make sense is why Southgate doesnt do this. Saka has played on the left, and has even played wingback. Foden likes to cut in. Walker likes to overlap. Saka is literally the only option that offers width, so play him on the left because you have no other player that can provide width on the left. Walker, Trippier, TAA, can all provide width on the right. This way Bellingham can run in behind, run into the channels, and be more aggressive in offense. Kane can drop in and has options in Bellingham and Saka. This even allows TAA to play the balls he wants to. Gallagher actually doesn't solve the issue, because he is more often out of position than Trent, hence why he harries so much. This shape also allows England to press in a 442 more often, and thats the most effective way to press nowadays.

    Absolutely no nuance in this chat at all. It's all just bombastic statements saying stuff like 'unforgivable' and Bellingham should be embarrassed. No one played well, and we were poor. But there has to be some calm and rational criticisms not just these silly angry statements. Having a go at Southgate for playing Trippier at left back, fine. But then absolutely no chat on who they would play there instead, or what specialist left back they would've taken instead?
    Crux of it is England just are not used to being pressed, and are finding it hard to play so far deep when teams press. For the first 35 mins against Serbia they sat back, and we looked great. As soon as they started to press us, as Denmark did for the whole match, we had no idea what to do and how to play out of it. That's why not giving Mainoo a chance is madness because he is one of the few press resistant players, and someone who can progress the ball himself.
    As a more general point, not to do with the lads discussing the performance on this pod, there's a lot of people trying to re-write history and say that Southgate's England have always been bad etc. But that's objectively untrue. I think we would all do well to remember that. Not saying we can't criticise Southgate because we absolutely can and should for these 2 matches so far, but lets not pretend England have always been poor under him because that's false.
