The problem with England is they always try to walk it in đź
Southgate is obviously obsessed with tiki-taka. Problem is that Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Busquets is a once-in-ten-lifetimes type of thing. It's not working for England, it's just running up pass statistics with literally 0 end product. England need to play more direct football.
no they don't
@@ssrmy1782 england don't play any tiki-taka , is this a troll comment?
They do the exactly the opposite of walking it in. They rarely get anywhere near the box never mind the goal. Centre halves knock it back and forward between each other for far too long.

Is that really a controversial opinion?
I think playing Foden centrally will cause problems - playing anyone in that 10 spot will cause problems as long as we have Kane playing. If Kane is on the pitch we need to think of him as occupying a 9/10 hybrid role. In midfield we need a 6 and two 8s who are comfortable getting forward, and we also need two wide, creative and pacy wingers alongside Kane.
That midfield is likely to be Jude and Mainoo as 8s to Declan as a 6. Alternatively Iâd like to see Wharton as the 6 and Rice playing his more natural role as a ball winning 8.
Iâd also like to see Trent at RB, inverting into midfield, to add some creativity back into our game and launch more quality crosses, including switches of play that can get the ball onto the left flank. We donât need Walker on the right unless weâre playing a team that have a genuinely threatening winger likely to attack us down there.

Also I would play Walker as a LB and Trent as a RB.

â@@sammybeck4855tripper is trash on the leftđđđ
Itâs not that simple. Our setup doesnât work with a 10 playing behind Kane. We never used to have one and attempting to do it now is exacerbating our issues. Kane and Foden shouldnât play at the same time unless Foden can actually be trusted to provide width and runs on the left OR he rotates with Saka and Palmer on the right.

I can't believe they said Bellingham has had a better tournament than Foden with such conviction.... Bellingham has been anonymous since his header vs Serbia. Foden has been the vocal point of our attacking movement, whereas Bellingham tries to beat 4 players and loses the ball.... Also Bellingham spends most the game hovering in the penalty area trying to snatch glory.
Foden is more about attacking as a team, when Bellingham is more about himself.

Could they not just play a 3-5-2 like so:
Kane Watkins
Gordon Foden Saka
Rice Bellingham
Guehi Stones Walker
Pickford
It gets all these players they want starting, removes Trippier from left back and brings more balance to the team with Gordon out on the left. I get that Palmer and Mainoo arenât in but they are some crazy good super subs. Palmer could also start ahead of Saka if need be. Bellingham is very capable of playing as an 8 and kept dropping deep against Slovenia anyways and might as well have been playing the 8 with how high Gallagher was pushing. Puts Foden in his best position at the 10. Allows Kane to drop deep like he likes to do while still having a high player plus an extra target because Watkins will be running in behind. Walker and stones have both played in a back 3 before, the only concern Iâd have before seeing it actually on the field is Guehi but heâs probably been the best player for England so far and Gordon works hard defensively so can support him.
Front 2s are not in the modern game
Also Southgate is too defensive minded for a back 3
Your midfield is perfect though
Also Kane needs to stop falling so deep he messes up Foden and Bellingham's playstyles and freedom
Kane occupies more of a 10 space, so we shouldnât play an additional 10 alongside him imo. Personally I like the setup otherwise, but Iâd drop Foden and add Trent at RB with Walker at LB.
Ideally though Iâd want to try Wharton in midfield as I think that would solve our buildup problems more than attempting a two striker system (as much as Iâd also like to see Kane and Watkins interact). So Iâd stick to one striker and put Wharton alongside Rice, which in turn frees up Rice and Bellingham to play higher on the pitch (Rice as a CM and Bellingham as a CAM)
The lack of football knowledge here is astounding - Foden drifting inside, to his natural number 10 position, was our main threat! Bellingham cannot play in the 10 behind Kane, it just doesnât work. Foden has to be the priority and Jude should be put in the 8 or benched, simple as that
Why was kane being dropped for Watkins not really talked about. If we have Watkins making runs behind it creates space in-between for Foden and Bellingham to work properly. Southgate has been the major issue by not taking 2 lb's and 1 who is actually fit.
This sounds ridiculous but if Southgate is persisting on to have our back line sit back it might be worth having to drop Kane and have a more darting forward or a Bellingham pushing up to Kaneâs position and have him as the false 9 and foden can be the 10 so we have more control and creativity, it also means we can have more pace on the left hand side with Gordon which is what we are crying out for
Honestly, don't know why Shaw has even been selected... at this rate the better option would be to drop Trippier, move Walker LB, play Trent RB. Then have Rice Bellingham Foden in the middle and Palmer Kane Saka wide
Rice Bellingham Wharton instead, with Rice and Bellingham as 8s and Kane either going forward or building up as a 10 like he prefers to do
I donât see why nobody thinks a Rice-Jude-Foden CM trio wouldnât work. Let Rice hold, Foden and Jude occupy one side each, in a sense, which then leaves room for Kane to drop deep, and create more overloads on the wings
The answer at lb is Walker with Trent going into rb. Mainoo into midfield, Gordon and palmer on the wings.
Hugh has been a good addition. Keep at it lads
Imagine watching all 3 games and not thinking itâs the correct call to to drop Bellingham
Palmer, Mainoo, Wharton and Watkins should play. Foden should be playing as a 10. But then again it is probably too late for experimenting now.
You canât play all those players
England still have the best defensive record in the tournament so far
Most people would play Bellingham in midfield with Foden. Bellingham can press, he can also drop in next to Rice and defend deep when we need to. He's just as competent defensively as Trent, Mainoo, probably Gallagher as well. In build-up, he and Foden can drop either side of Rice and look to get the ball on the turn and drive or pop it off to a wide player. This allows us to get width & runs in behind on the left with Gordon. Saka/Palmer can play on the right. Foden can play centrally / in the right pocket where he's most dangerous. With Gordon on the left, there's less responsibility on Trippier having to get forward, he can maybe hold back a bit and then allow Bellingham to drive forward and make late runs into the box. A front five of Kane, Gordon, Bellingham, Foden and Saka/Palmer would be much more dangerous. Then the back 5 of Trippier/Shaw, Rice, Walker, Stones and Guéhi can offer protection. Maybe Stones or the full-backs can step into midfield as well when we're building attacks. If we're playing a low block, we can release one of the full-backs on the overlap to provide more options and flood the box.
If he sticks with the current system, I do agree with the Foden & Bellingham combination needing an overlapping run from Shaw because at the minute, nobody wants to get down the touchline and stretch play. Trippier can physically stand there, but he's not offering any threat. As mentioned, if Shaw isn't available, we could play Foden on the right (have Walker occasionally overlap), with Gordon or even Saka on the left. Saka isn't used to playing there, so might not work, but it should at least provide more width/balance. Not sure why Gareth never tried that once in the group games. And if he's not going to play the midfield three of Rice, Bellingham and Foden, then Mainoo probably is the best partner for Rice, although I think it depends on the opponent. In the first 20 mins against Serbia, Trent was given the freedom to push higher and take up advanced positions or get round Saka on the overlap. I'm not sure why that stopped and wasn't seen at all in the Denmark game, but I think in that role Trent can be dangerous. However, he'll still have the same problems when receiving deep in build-up and also defensively (positional play, pressing etc.).
What Southgate needs to do is to play Gordon on the LW, Saka as RW, Kane as ST. Then use Foden, Jude, and Rice in Midfield. Play Walker on the LB and Trent as an inverted RB.
I agree with you except I donât think we have enough balance in midfield that way and it puts too much of a burden on Rice. We need a good passer in the midfield, or someone with the organising capability of Henderson, and Foden is not that player to come in and fill the Phillips/Henderson gap (which people laugh about but actually provided lots of balance to create a relatively effective midfield).
I think Wharton could be that player. Play him as DM and Jude/Rice as 8s - Jude more attacking, Rice more defensive.
You could also put Foden or Palmer on the RW to rotate with Saka - all three of them like to invert into centre space, and both Foden and Palmer like to do things from the right half space, so they could still do things from the midfield there.
Especially with Trent inverting from RB and Gordon providing width and pace on the LW, youâve suddenly got a much more dynamic team while also only changing 2 names from the Serbia starting 11.
Mainoo is a great player but imo he should be considered as a sub for Bellingham (who really shouldnât play a full 90). Likewise, Palmer should sub in for Saka at 45 or 60, and Watkins should be brought on at 60 if Kane is struggling to stretch the defence.
So basically a 433 that sets up something like this:
GordonâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠ..Saka
âŠâŠâŠâŠâŠ.KaneâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠ
âŠâŠ. JudeâŠâŠâŠRiceâŠâŠ.

WalkerâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠ..Trent
âŠâŠâŠGuĂ©hi-StonesâŠâŠ..
âŠâŠâŠâŠâŠPickfordâŠâŠâŠ..
In possession/build up it shifts to more of a 3421:
âŠâŠâŠâŠâŠKaneâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠ
âŠâŠâŠJudeâŠ..SakaâŠâŠ..
GordonâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠTrent
âŠâŠ.Wharton..RiceâŠâŠ..
WalkerâŠGuĂ©hiâŠStones
âŠâŠâŠâŠPickfordâŠâŠâŠâŠ.
Subs/alternatives within this system:
Shaw for Walker
Gomez for Walker/Guéhi
Dunk for Guéhi
Konsa for Stones
Trippier for Trent
Mainoo for Jude (or Wharton, but more likely Rice drops deeper if Mainoo comes on for Wharton and switches roles)
Gallagher for Jude (or Wharton, but again, Rice would take the DM and Gallagher would take the right sided 8)
Watkins/Toney for Kane
Bowen for Kane or Saka
Foden for Gordon, Saka or maybe Bellingham (in that left half space)
Palmer for Gordon or Saka
Eze for Gordon (or maybe Bellingham)
Advantages of this system:
- defensively solid
- accounts for Kane dropping deep by leaving the 10 space for him but playing runners and physical pressers/ball winners around him
- relatively simple and can solve some of the issues weâve had attempting too much positional flexibility with too many players
- incorporates Trent and allows him to push into midfield without asking him to actually take up one of our midfield spots
- incorporates Wharton while surrounding him with experienced players, helping us get the most out of his passing ability without leaving him too exposed
- frees up Bellingham by allowing Gordon to keep the width and Walker/Wharton to cover defensively, so Bellingham can pass in build up between Wharton/CBs/Gordon/Kane and make some of his late runs
- gives the possibility of Wharton helping with build up from the left, since heâs left-footed so can easily receive from the CBs or midfield and has plenty of passing options from that side; Trent can do similar things from the right, opening up way more passing lanes than we currently have
- puts everyone in very similar positions/roles to their club roles, except for Walker; should get us playing more bravely and less hesitantly
- very balanced between attack and defence and left and right flanks, with lots of possibility to tweak the system slightly according to how opponents have set up, without having to tear up the whole game plan. Eg from this setup you can play with a box or diamond midfield, you could keep 4 at the back if needed, you could put Watkins up front if you need more threat on the counter, etc
- can overload opposing defences while in possession, can also create overload in midfield or in defence
- tons of options for triangles and passing which should help our speed and fluidity in the build up and lead to more familiarity and chemistry between players - without being overly predictable. Eg Trent-Rice-Saka would form an effective passing triangle (making the most of the Arsenal connection, as well as Trentâs ability to do similar things to Ben White).
- other triangles: Bellingham-Kane-Gordon, Rice-Kane-Saka, Wharton-Bellingham-Rice, Guéhi-Wharton-Bellingham (Crystal Palace link up), Wharton-Bellingham-Gordon, etc. Drilling quick, sharp passing between those combinations and we should become much better at playing out through your press
It would be tough on Foden especially, and also on Trippier, as neither have done much wrong considering the jobs theyâve been tasked with, but the current system doesnât suit them. Foden is both too versatile and too specialised to have an easy time performing for England - he needs the entire City system to be at his best, but in the meantime heâd probably be best suited to RW with Trent and Wharton behind him. Unfortunately three others are also battling for that spot and Saka is better at it in an England shirt. If we had Shaw, we could put Foden at LW, but otherwise we definitely shouldnât. And as Iâve said, I donât think we should attempt to play with a single central 10 considering itâs not singing any of our midfielders are actually that good at, and considering we have Kane occupying that space.

I wish he wouldâve at least tried the Bellingham false 9 with foden 10 and Gordon or Palmer starting. It is too late for excitements now. But that feels like a team who will move the ball around the field vastly
Foden is the reason for all this chat, heâs starting LW but playing as a 10 or a RW. Thereâs no shape or attack down the left allowing teams to shut down the middle and the right without worry of the left
If you play like Germany. You can fit everyone on the pitch. You just drop Trips and Saka. Back 3 of Walker, Gueyhe and Stones. Use Mainoo and Rice as the DM and Pivot. Use Bellingham as a box to box CM. Use Foden at 10. Use Gordan on the left and the Palmer on the right. Kane up top.
Trent right back, inverting to cdm along side rice, 3 in def 2 cdm in front like how liverpool play. Foden and bellingham cam gordon on the left and saka on the right kane/watkins/toney st.
Its not hard to fit them all in there pref postions, just no one wanted to use 2 CAMâs or even talk about it.

Simple
I've seen Saka when he first burst onto the scene....... as a marauding left back tearing it up and down the left wing so he can play that side, 100%. You could then play Palmer on the right...... happy days!!
The only thing is, I'm not sure that our number 7 is 100% fit, he missed the last league game through injury and missed the early warm up games and training.
Happy for this to be wrong, but difference between Foden and Bellingham from what Iâve seen is Phil turns on the ball towards goal. Bellinghamâs been the 4th pass in a triangle too many times. Phil would drive it forwards at a better rate, can we not play him alongside or slightly ahead of Rice?
I donât think it matters what players southgate plays or subs. Heâs not playing with tactics to open up the opposition up. We retained possession and limited their attack well⊠but we arenât putting defences to the test, goals are a consequence of generating chances. Another manager would attack a team like Slovenia with this squad. Southgate has got the dream scenario with this squad and the draws heâs getting. It all stems from the manager. I know this because Iâm a Villa fan. When unai came in and moved gerrard out the way the change was insane. Itâs all from the top. Players all execute the plans they are told
Southgate was the right manager when he was appointed. Now itâs just time to move on and level up. We always go into tournaments where we donât know out best team. No other nation does that. How do we still not know our midfield yet? Why did he suddenly drop all of our left wingers who have actually done well for England? Why do we still not know how to play Foden? France play so similarly year on year with a few changes. It helps them build relationships. We always end up with experiments. Southgate is a mess
Southgate was never the right manager ever âŠ.. I would of been happy with Big Sam with all his money scamming
Defence should be kept the same. The rest (just my opinion)

I rate that, the Watkins on after 60
Agreed although personally we need more of a DM on the pitch, we need Trent at RB, and we should just give up on playing a 10 while Kane is on the pitch

I don't blame Kneelgate for the WC18, as ENG wouldn't have beaten that French team in the final, but defo blame him for throwing away the Euro20, when 1-0 up, at a packed wembley, having Italy on the ropes, yet he Mr. Beaned it!
ENG had France in the WC22 semi's rocking and rolling, but Kneelgate couldn't seal the deal.
Belgium booed they team also in the last games, as they too have been frustrated in seeing their team packed of such high calibre players, yet have nothing to show for it for in the last several tournaments.
Klopp please save this team after he gets fired
Rory: We do to do something but we shouldnt do anything.
Agree with Hugh
how do people feel about a back 3 of walker stones guehi, saka and trent at wingback, jude and rice in the middle, and foden palmer kane up front. saka and trent can provide real width, also gives trent the chance to come into midefield and lets jude run into the forward from time to time, back three and rice is solid defensively with one of trent or jude sitting back. and foden and palmer are both good at dropping deep to progress the ball
Why isn't Joe Gomez in the conversation for Left Back replacement?
U defended well against denmark slovenia and serbia wow how difficult it is to defend against them đ
âit was better, we were knocking on the doorâ 0-0 vs slovenia đ€Šââïž
And for what southgate said . We could lose the next game and we have only conceded 2 goals all competition so is that a good thing . No it's irrelevant that we have only conceded 1 goal reality is we shouldn't have conceded against anyone in that group
Portugal have been immense Adam. They are my favourites at the moment.
Spain has been the most impressive than Germany, Portugal and Austria
As an American thatâs been watching European football for many many years all I can say is England lacks passion, players play like they are scared to make a mistake. Also thereâs a major lack of leadership, the players look lost or even uninterested
What about your US men's team. Do they have passion or leadership, seems that it's the same for England. Also, your women's team is a national disgrace of the world football history when your captain laughed after a penatly kick and she had a horrid time post match interview and shat herself on. We do have some Leadership but we also got Kane that has bottlejob mentality that sucks and just motivates the team to oh ok we just go and have a good time and ride it out and thank you for the support. England apologists are at finest.
Literally seems like Southgate has picked all the highest rated players on fifa
To me one of two things need to happen next game
Either drop Bellingham to cm next to rice put folden center and gordon wing
Or bit braver again drop Bellingham cm keep folden on left but drop saka for Palmer and then play kane as a number ten just behind another striker in Watkins or tony as kane drops deep anyways mate as well play him there e
lack of leadership
No one questions rice and itâs weird he does literally nothing and people praise him
Forcing a limited player like Foden into the team is throwing off the balance.
Foden should be playing 10 instead of Bellingham tbh
bellingham is horrific
Foden limited?
Bellingham is shit as the no 10. He's the limited player. The midfield Haaland.
Oh yeah because we play great football without Foden especially in other tournaments...
Key things that need to change for me are the centre of the pitch & the left side. Mainoo's quick & progressive passing may be the solution to the centre but currently unproven for a whole match / against a decent opposition.
The left-side needs someone left-footed with pace who is able to get down the line & cause trouble for the opposition - agree with rory that trippier should start ahead of shaw due to match fitness, meaning he HAS to be paired with someone who doesn't mind bombing down the wing, beating the full-back, or running in behind. Foden is a great player but does not want to do any of that - he wants to get the ball and dribble inside to his preferred 10 position, which leaves the left side completely dysfunctional.
I think cole palmer could flourish on the left - there is nobody else in the team who knows better than him how to create impact & chances when there isnt much of a tactical game plan & there is a general lack of cohesion in the team.
Bring on Wharton. Left footed and progressive in build up
Its very easy to resolve...
Saka LWB, Stones LCB, Guehi CB, Walker RCB, Trent RWB
Suddenly we have pace on the left wing, suddenly trent is in a position on the pitch he can actually play long passes to players in space instead of 5 yard passes to a deep lying forward and inverted wingers đđđ its embarrassing how many options and how many simple solutions this crop of players offer any competent manager... the fact Southgate thinks he needs to publicly defend the players instead of justify his own errors, highlights the levels of whats truly wrong at England. Its embarrassing
Saka hasnât played left back for 3-4 years and you think he should go from RW to LB for the first time in that long in a knockout game
Bellingham needs to play next to Rice and Foden needs to be CAM with Gordon left and Palmer right
The kick off
Here's the starting 11 that England need in order to have a chance of winning:
Gordon - Kane - Saka
Rice - Mainoo - Bellingham
Walker - Guehi - Stones - TAA
Pickford
Foden instead of mainoo is perfect
Walker to LB and Trent to RB. Solves the problem.
I'd drop Foden and Bellingham.
Gordon on the left, Mainoo next to Rice. Kane at 10 and Watkins at 9.
Spain played 10 reserve players in the last game. VIVA
Southgate has played Saka on the left before.
Rory: "Incompetence of the German..."
Me: people?
Rory: ..."travel"
Spencer and Hugh đđđ
To be fair these players just by themselves should be playing better regardless of manager
Foden can play the passes to Kane that Bellingham just isn't capable of.
Gordon has the pace that Foden doesn't have for the wing and to stretch the game. He is also coming off the back of a brilliant season.
Bellingham just hasn't been doing it in the competition and regardless of what he won with Madrid, he wasn't great for the last load of months. He also looks tired so he should be dropped.
Mainoo has looked good when he has came on. Takes a touch and finds a pass. Offers good movement also. Think he deserves a start.
If Kane fails to put in a good shift in the first 60 he should be whipped off and Watkins should be given a first chance
Even Iâm losing faith believe I loved Southgate at 2018 2020 waistcoat and all that but think time up but hopefully Sunday a win fingers crossed
