    Watching the England players coming out of the dressing room at half time spoke volumes - all heads down, nobody talking and looked beaten already. Not one player (or coaching staff member) looked as if they wanted to be there for the second half....very bizarre to watch.

      I think this was one of those "clear and obvious" cases and if the ref/linesman makes a decision the VAR would always go with on field decision, so it does fall on Taylor's shoulders IMO.

    The biggest problem with soutgate that ive noticed, is that hes more scared of losing then he is desperate to win. The team england have, they should be going out trying to outscore everyone, but southgate gets a goal and then shits himself ajd drops back every time. He doesnt even play defensively very well, pulling your players back and doing nothing else isnt a good defensive tactic. Also if thay is what he wants to do then why play kane and foden, 2 players who dont do well counter attacking. They suit a more high possession style where your getting 10+ shots a game. If we wanna sit back and counter then play watkins or tony upfront and gordon or bowen on the wing. Its like hes trying to do both without actually really doing either

    I'm 54 years old. The first tournament i saw England play in was the 1980 European Championship held in Italy. The constant tropes i've heard trotted out for forty four years are:
    1) They do it week in week out in the First Division/Premier League...
    2) None of 'X's' players would get in our squad...
    3) 'We take the lead and start dropping back onto the edge of our own box...'
    Our media keep telling us how good our players are. Meanwhile the players from these other countries don't rate us at all. Its just not the professional thing to say so to the media. Eidur Gudjohnsen was asked after Iceland beat England 2-1 'What was the team talk before the game'. He said 'our manager said "you guys are coming up against one of the most overrated teams in World football. They've got nothing. You'll beat them.'

It’s lazy to pinpoint that and say that’s the problem. He came off and Gallagher came on and we actually looked more open cause he was running everywhere. No discipline. If you’re going to play Trent in midfield you need width and runners. Foden & kane both come deep, short and central. They want ball to feet. You take him off and then put Watkins on that is constantly looking to get in behind 🤦🏻‍♂️ At Liverpool our wingers offer width & constantly running in behind. Under Southgate, Trent could play in a 5-3-2 but not a 4-2-3-1 in competitive fixtures, because Southgate’s ultra-cautious approach and poverty of ambition creates a turgid, uninspiring performance. The Trent experiment was set up to fail. You can’t play deep with no counter-pressing, no pace and energy, and expect a talented passer if the ball to flourish.

    Walker, Stones and Foden are used to attacking and smashing teams at City. Rice and Saka the same for Arsenal. Kane the same with Bayern. Bellingham the same for Dortmund and Real. Most players are playing for teams where they attack and score goals, not sit back and defend. Southgate are changing their nature and getting the worst out of them, not the best.

Specifically in international games you have options to start one way for tactical reasons and depending on the flow of the game you have options to swap out players to refresh legs and/or switch up tactics.

  • @nvgirl1807

    Trent isn't the issue, just an easy excuse. The stats show that in both games he created the most chances and delivered the most passes through the lines. The issue is no movement. Kane needs to go and Watkins in wit Trent so he has someone to pass up the field to. Don't understand why there is a focus on changing the team to accommodate Foden because it appears he can only play in one position. He played there in the warm up games and didn't deliver

    • @rogerwhite4073
      @rogerwhite4073 Před 5 dny +3

      so much commentary has centred on Trent's inclusion, despite the fact he's been subbed off in both games, with no notable improvement after the substitution. If Trent was the issue, then the 40 odd minutes in the second half against Denmark would have been plenty of time to rectify the situation. Why talk about one player when clearly the problems are all over the pitch. it's baffling that so many quality players seem to lose their composure on the international stage. Is Southgate to blame? I don't know, I just know that focussing on Trent is a red herring.

    • @_SIRenity_
      @_SIRenity_ Před 5 dny +4

      Clueless. This is why the eye test is important and not to just plainly look at stats. He is one of many problems but him in particular had a knock on effect. 3 'chances' weren't clear cut chances on goal either, you cant just read off the stat sheet and announce this like it justifies his selection there, its not a good reflection at all. It is disingenous of the quality of said 'chances'. It's not Trents fault lets be clear. It's SG playing him there in the first place and he is so uncomfortable there, he doesn't know where to be and how to effectively play there on both sides of the ball, it showed, and it has a knock on effect. To try get a player in just because he can knock a good long ball here and there, is so absurd af the cost of a balnce in the middle, lack of defensive protection as a pairing from CM, and giving up the ability to control the middle of the park going forward. All things that dont show up on the stat sheet and all things that was obvious in watching. Again' those 3 'chances' didn't create decent goal scoring opportunities, but they go down as a tick in the box of what qualifies as one in that category. Anyone leading with this stat as a defense of his selection there isn't looking at the game and how bad of a decision it was him being there. The best time for him to be effective in that role SG wanted was when the front 3 were changed and had better willing runners in behind, but he was taken off! Still, it isnt worth sacrificing everything else that came with him playing there. And just to reiterate, thats not Trents fault, its dire management on Southgates part

    • @rogerwhite4073
      @rogerwhite4073 Před 5 dny +2

      @@_SIRenity_ fine, but why no change after he's subbed off then?

    • @_SIRenity_
      @_SIRenity_ Před 5 dny +1

      @rogerwhite4073 I did say he's one of many problems in the side. The majority lays at SGs door, whether it be mental, tactical, and selection. Having an experiment when in a tournament is mental, and unfair to put that pressure on Trent. And you cant bring on a Gallagher for added energy in the middle, hes not bringing any more control in there which is part of what we needed, but was less of a liabiliy and didnt need babysitting by those around him, which were more isolated beforehand and made them nervous.
      Not the first and only problem we have by far like I said, but I'd like to say Rice is great reading defensivley and getting a foot in - THAT IS IT. He lacks everything else to be a 6. Sure, looks great at a West Ham when the team sits back, but not in a ball dominating side. Even Arteta realised that and has him in a more progressed role with Jorghino next to him as insurance - but the latter can dictate play and os good on the ball. And with Rice as an 8, if we were to play him there as has now been suggested, particularly at international level, there's plenty better than him, especially on other talented teams in the middle of the park. He isn't quick enough mentally, isnt quick enough on the ball, isn't cute enough on the ball, and isn't technically gifted. He's slowly being found out and quite overrated. Oh and Saka has another level he needs to get to - 1 assists for England in the actual tournaments is effing dire (not counting qualifiers we near always breeze through). Can he do A job there? Yes o course, but it won't be World beating, that's for sure. He's outclassed in every department as a 6 when comparing other top talented teams 6's. Even some who are coming off their bench. In short, that central pairing stunk the place out and caused a complete disconnect from back to front. Adding Trent to that mix is an effing joke

    The problem of England is that they always wanted to get the ball forward, they wanted to do it fast and efficiently.
    They don’t go sideways or backwards first in order to create the perfect situation to go forward. They think that doing more is inefficient, so they wanted to get forward as quick as possible.
    As a result, they never get the ball forward in a perfect situation. Because they never create such situations.
    If the opponent’s defence is being dragged wide open, then making a pass would become easy, even a half decent pass would turn into a great chance.
    If the opponent defence is still in good shape, it’s difficult to make a pass, and even if you make a great pass, it won’t turn into a half decent chance.
    England always get the ball forward against a defence that is still in good shape. They never think of going sideways and backwards to breakdown the defence first.
    If they can’t score goals, they would think the problem is because they lack urgency. So they rush the attack even more. They can’t be more incorrect. The build up of the 09-12 Barcelona and 17-20 ManCity were very slow and methodical.

    Physiologically the quality of the pitch might have had them worried about an injury and the humidity had something to do with the level of our play they did look tired at the end of the game. From Justin in West Midlands, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿.

    There is nothing wrong with sitting back... if you can do it well. When you see half the team dropping back as if they'are gonna play through the opposition, and then you see the GK kicks it long to no one, that tell you that half the team is given one instruction and the other half is given a different one, aka: They have no idea what they're doing.

      Like him or not that was Jack's specialty, holding and moving the ball while dragging players over the way Saka does.

    Okay from the get go. We’ve always had superstars in England we invented the game in mediaeval times secondly yes it is true in recent years the rest of the world has fallen below a bar not saying that any countries bad at playing football but really you’re going to start on the Trent situation Harry Kane is dropping back too deep which traps are teaming. Trent is a tactician with crosses and long balls and even a power shot exactly same thing that you all used to love about David Beckham and no I don’t think Trent is the best of everything. There are areas to everyone’s games that they can approve upon. He’s one of the most decorated players on your team, still quite young Jude Benham is the only one on that team that wants him there and people banging on about Foden but let’s be honest he hasn’t scored a goal that isn’t scrappy or a bang from outside the box and I’m not putting him down he is amazing, but he is like Griezmann for France where he gets into the box and he would rather pass it of course he wants to score and likes scoring but natural born she is do not think about it they just do it might be that’s wrong but that’s what all the natural born she would say then you’ve got Walker and Gallagher they do not pass forward at all in a convincing way or they will chip in when the box is completely overloaded Would be oppositions players again not knocking them what they do is extremely important. Maybe it’s system we try to play and also international football is different at each different club in England you have ethos. and England hasn’t gotten ethos anymore we’re all there because it’s painful for not winning for so long we say for club and country all things like for everyone at home they know exactly what we’re thinking. We all want to win and as soon as as a slipper, we all look at it but actually be honest with what the problem is it’s not Trent I’ve just pointed free other issues we have we’ve trying to be as nice and open as possible I could think of another two without thinking you need to create an ethos, Southgate has done really well to pull a dressing room together but he is as boring as watching paint dry he is so safe Walker said he hasn’t told us to get back. We’re trying to manage the game sometimes you have to that would’ve had to mean that they are outworking us and that they have more pace on us which we know is wrong but also if you’re playing an opponent that doesn’t necessarily have big players they’re going to work their socks off to give you the hardest game ever as they may get spotted but also other countries have more love for their country not in the sense that England isn’t patriotic but it’s not in the same way the other countries are they are patriotic people in England but England itself is not patriotic but who knows? Maybe I’ve been talking about this for far too long and no one is going to read this and if you did thanks you can tell me what you think if I’m crazy or if my madness sounds a little bit more sound.
