After Lesson 1, I took your advice and began listening to "QVC Italia" while I was cleaning or preparing meals. As I listened, I began hearing words I knew; colors, numbers, etc.
One day while I was listening, I realized I understood everything the man was saying. Then I realized he was a guest on the show and he was speaking English! 😁

I really appreciate that you made this video (and the ones you've made I the past where you mention immersion). As someone who's spent time trying to learn 4 languages in the past, I had to learn that passive immersion is the ultimate key to success.
In addition to this series (and "Caffè Italiano"), I constantly have QVC on the secondary TV in my house, I opt for Italian music more often than not, and I alternate between watching Italian movies in English and Italian subtitles. Plus, the 5 minutes of app learning I do every day.

Along with a bunch of the stuff you mentioned, I've also been watching my favorite TV show (I've watched it like 30 times and basically know the words by heart at this point) with the Italian dub and sub and it has helped a ton! I've noticed that, for me at least, it especially helps with a lot of vocab and grammar. It also makes actually sitting down and watching very enjoyable since I actually enjoy watching the show and I have a very good idea of what is going on and what they are saying, even without any English.

@organboi I think passive immersion is just one small component, but it seems like both passive and active immersion are being referenced here. I'm a US language instructor and yes, passive immersion has been proven ineffective however; it does hold some value when combined with explicit grammar & vocabulary instruction along with active immersion. I imagine there are varied types of immersion activities on the website, though I have not visited it yet.

I've finally transitioned from english subtitles to only italian ones and italian audio. I never thought I'd get there. Now my problem is that I rely too much on the subtitles because my listening skills are weaker than my reading skills. I basically jumped into native speaker content and listened hours a day. It didn't matter if i didn't understand. I knew one day I would. I've been learning italian for one year. You're so right on making your brain think it's important. I'm trying to get my brain to believe that if i don't learn italian, I will die. 😂

started two days ago lol. learning it to communicate with a friend to make her feel more at home, and she is also helping me, im really having fun, when i say certain phrases in my own way like, like i would say it in english or my home language "Afrikaans", especially in my home language as its more relatable how we talk, sentence structure etc. so ive been doing that learning new words from your videos, so i go back and try to remember them and practice by trying to use them in a sentence and even type a sentence out to my friend, and then i try really hard on my own, by implementing how u explained the structure, and 70% i get it right lol but she is really helping me how you would say speaking normally and explains me why. like for example like you wont say "have a good morning" but rather say "i wish you a good morning". having lots of fun honestly. and i have been listening qvc italia in the background lol, when i hear words i remember, or some that sound familiar i look some of them up to see if its really what i thought it was and then i get excited when i was right xD. i do appreciate you and these videos a lot as it does push me in the right direction

The point about learning from listening...for years, knowing a good deal of French and the history of Italy and the French presence, I understood my last name to be derived from the French.. Le (la) Lumiere. When I started looking it up, all I found was "lemon" (limone). Then, watching a show filmed in Bari on MHZ Choice, the actor was talking about "lumia"..and the captions said...LIGHT! So, my original conclusions about the meaning of my name...La Lumia (although we spell it as one word) was confirmed by actors talking in a TV series...not by the dictionary!!!! (The show is "Captain Maria" and it's still available on MHz Choice!)

Grazie mille for these videos! They help a lot ^-^ I like art and I want to watch Italian painting tutorials for example. I found the CZcams channel Vale su Tela. I'd like to learn from a standard Italian accent, but I'm just a beginner so I don't know if she has a dialect or not. Would you be able to check? If she does have a dialect, do you think you could recommend some art channels that have a standard Italian accent? I appreciate it!

Also I think a good thing for immersion content is TV shows or movies you have watched a lot in your language but dubbed into Italian. The Italian dubbing industry is amazing. I like to watch Big Bang Theory and also Say Yes to the Dress from the USA that are dubbed into Italian.

I enjoy watching the Food network in Italy. Their Food network has better shows than the U.S ! The food they present and prepare looks so good and the people and culture just suck you right into watching it. This has been my favorite immersion method.

Ciao! You can play around with subtitles according to your level - for example, it could be fun to try watching without subtitles to see how much you can grasp, and then turn on subtitles to figure out specific words you have missed! A presto 😊

I've been listening to Life Church Italian youtube channel. It has worship songs and preaching from the Bible so I'm getting to hear songs and spoken words in Italian whilst also hearing Gods word in Italian which is great because I know the Bible in English and some of the worship songs so I'm alrwady a bit familiar with the content 🙂

Too bad we can't have something like we had at Presidio of Monterey. A bunch of us would go to dinner and try to have the entire conversation in the language we were learning. You would think we would get funny looks from people but I actually think we were more like the unexpected entertainment. Thanks for the suggestions. I subscribed to "Portale del Verde."

I am always wary of talking to other language learners for practice, because one person can be wrong and end up influencing others to say something incorrectly. I listen to Radio Italia over the web while I am working.

@@valis992000 We were all in the same class and only used words that we knew. I actually thought it was good practice for the language to speak it among ourselves. My comment was somewhat rhetorical. Pretty much physically impossible for all of Manu's students to go to dinner together. ;-)

But this is not the immersion the teacher is talking about. He means mindless listening in the background without understanding a word. Seems unproductive big-time.

@@organboi I think it depends on the student. The immersion helps me to see where I am in my studies. I also do research in documents in Italian for genealogy so everything together is helping me to improve in my studies all around.

Should you watch Italian Movies or is it also ok to watch Movies that are dubbed for Italian. Because when I watch Movies that are dubbed into German ( I'm a native German speaker) often the conversation are weird and sound off because people don't really talk like that.
