Never have i ever heard such a case of daylight robbery.. 4k to change a flexi ticket. Why even call it flexi at that point😂
it flexes your wallet
Garnt: so why is it not flexible
ANA: Money
I hear that question on the daily. lol It's flex because you can change it, not that the change is free of charge.
Should be called a stiffy ticket because that's what they're trying to do to you.
Just so you know what the flex ticket does.
It ALLOWS you to change the flight in the first place. With a basic ticket you don't get that option at all.
So basically you're paying extra to get the option to pay extra lul
4k to reschedule or 900 to cancel. Bruh, thems fighting words.
Or free to just not show up. What a fool.
@@robspunk you don't get it. 900 is from the price of the ticket (that garnt has paid) so garnt get 100 back.
i booked a business class ticket from Sydney to new york (with layovers) which was about $2900 when i was at checking they told me that the flight was overbooked and that i would need to upgrade the seat to first class for an extra $1500, i said no im not doing that its your issue not mine so i said im canceling the ticket and all of a sudden my business class seat was available
Bruh
I would have taken that upgrade if I had the money. Most of the long haul flights I have taken in business class the difference up to 1st class is between $5000 and $10000 when booking the ticket. Once paid $2000 for a business seat to Singapore where the 1st class seat was $18000 on the same flight.
Actually fucking criminal. We overbooked your flight so you need to give up your seat unless you pay us more
Thats fucked. My coworker once had to cancel his flight because it was overbooked but the airline compensated him. Not only that they paid him $6000 but he also got another flight 3 days later free of charge. Forgot which airline it was. But that's how it should be. They overbook so they should be paying you for fucking up not you paying for their fuck-up.
I hate that its normal practice for airlines to super overbook flights.
There's a way to sometimes work your way around those scams (and abusive short-term cancellation fees):
1/ Reschedule the booking for a much later date, even if it means paying a premium
2/ Immediately cancel the new booking
This only works if cancelling refund the full ticket, in which case you'll only pay the "low" cancelling fee.
Exactly this. Also some airlines allow you to "change" into a higher end version of a ticket that is refundable for an additional cost. So you basically call in to effectively to upgrade your ticket and change for a later date (since it will usually be for cheaper), then you can use the airlines online portal to cancel the ticket, or call again to cancel for a full refund.
He pretty much tried something, but one should just keep asking about options like the one you said to see what is the lowest price.
@@ghosthunter0950 They won't help you save money they're after
@@abrararifify depends some airlines will only refund up to the extra you paid to upgrade your ticket
Scam? Its 30 usd lol
dont worry garnt, im suing the airline on your behalf right now

The instant I heard "I put my passport in my travel bag" I'm like, oh no.

What's the alternative? Keep it on your person?

bruh that was straight robbery
No that was stupidity. He paid $900 to cancel the flight. Then booked another one to the UK.
My wife puts things in safe places and we never ever find them again!
That is literally my mum, she always tidies my things and puts them away and never tells me where she puts them and then she straight up forgets where she put them
we need more regulation of airlines and their pricing policies
people always hated the Karens that would start fights with airlines and sue them successfully.
and still a lot of people side with airlines out of a sense of apologism.
but as an anarchist I always cherished the pain and chaos caused to big corporations.
I don't like the Karens but I don't mind them doing the damage.
Regulation is exactly why they started charging for bags.
There was regulation for airline pricing policies. It was so terrible that they were deregulated in 1978
the more a government is implicated the worst it get , regulations arent the solution , competition is.
@@honkingthechickenaway5973 Bullshit. Competition result in cutting corner chickenshit like United Airlines. Shit regulation equal shit market, because the market has never ever been free. It's a bullshit the kleptocracy class sell poor people to make them stop rebelling.
I'd be on the phone with my credit card company the moment this happened.
I had a guy on the phone 2 days ago that had a flight cancellation and he was ready to pay almost £2k for an alternative flight, I was like.... are you sure about that? You sure you don't want a refund? He was like naa, I was triple quadruple checking with this guy that he was sure he wanted to spend that much, like "I'm going to take the money... you sure?" 🤣
£4k tho? That's crazy
Might have been usd which would probably be closer to £2-3k
Garnt should have asked for the manager of the manager
honestly, that can work, once in a department store for an exchange we started talking with the manager of the cashiers already there, because it was an AxB and we wanted to change one product (that didn't fit and of course during covid it's not like we were able to try it on the store) and they were saying we needed to bring all 3 of the products to change one, then the manager of that person was like "dude, they have the receipt, use that info to make it as if you're returning the 3 products and buying two of them again"
I've had the same issue with flexible tickets before its a freaking scam
edit: you should always opt for an insurance instead of flexible ticket
I'm glad DHL did you right, one of my past jobs was basically 100% interfacing with couriers, DHL was always pretty reliable, only ever had one issue with them, and that issue was the cause of the recipient, not DHL directly.
TOLL IPEC, on the other hand, was always like trying to corral a bus full of toddlers. No idea how they manage to stay in business considering what I went through trying to work with them.
DHL and the German Post work together, a few months ago their van caught on fire from an electrical error and DHL refunded my package without me even doing much. They got together with the company I had ordered from and I had my money within about 2 weeks.
Nobody was injured in the fire but my street smelled like that for two days.
Judging you’re Australian by Toll IPEC
I've had personal packages come from DHL and not had any issues. The one time I did have an issue was at a retail job I worked a few summers ago. The manager told us not to sign for any packages or we would be written up, and to just ping them if a package arrives. So DHL guy comes in and asks me to sign for a whole bunch of computers. I told him I cannot but I am pinging the manager to come sign for them. He immediately started yelling that I had to sign for the packages now or else. I told him if I signed then I would get written up so I will not be signing for them. Luckily the manager walked up then and started yelling at the DHL guy that the associates can't sign for things especially thousands of dollars in computers. And the manager said if the DHL guy wouldn't stop harassing me he would call DHL and report him. DHL guy shut up and let the manager sign the packages, and never tried to get me or the other associates to sign for things again. I guess he was having a bad day, but it was wild he just went off when I said I was getting the manager...
@@thewatermelons9614 You are correct my good watermelon
DHL is weird. Everyone I know claims that DHL sucks, but it's the only service here that ships at a reasonable speed, at a reasonable rate, without destroying the package.
Garnt should have pulled the "I am a famous CZcamsr" card on the manager. 😂
"ma'am i am an expert on anime titties and as you can guess i can't see your boobs through the phone so you will not be earning brownie points with me. Now refund my freaking flight please." LOL
Threatening with bad publicity is a great way to ruin your life in Japan. The Japanese definition of defamation is so lax that even if what you say is completely factual, if your intent was to harm the other party's image in any way, you get sued and you lose.
as someone who used to work in the ticketing industry, they have razor thin margins on plane tickets (thhough this is pre covid) however they solely "Rely" on people fucking up. Normally this is where they will either (if its free season will book you for free or charge insane numbers) Especially if you bought a promotion ticket which garnt mentioned he didn't so there's that.
Regardless i am afraid of post covid travelling i am from SEA and even the countries near me are charging insane prices just for plane tickets. Augh
Gladly the time we *had* to change a ticket was kinda easy, but that was in part because the person booking the flight was a relative frequent flyer due to work and he fucking had to go to emergency due to kidney stones. (all pre covid)
Domestic flights in the US alone is like 12+ hours with layovers, and rarely you'll find direct, just to go from the east to west coast for a small price of starting $1000 USD. Actually insane to fly unless you absolutely have to atm.
@@LockheedMartinEnjoyer To be fair there are reasons why the domestic flights in the US aren't usually direct, having hubs has economic sense to airlines and with fewer flights they can give a wide variarity of itineraries, though is also the reason why when I had to go to the north east coast of the US I arrived at Miami, had a morning flight to Dallas and had to wait like 6 hours to go east again, like many years ago.
I dont think 30 dollars are insane in any way
@@LockheedMartinEnjoyer its like the OP said. razor thin margins. Cost cutting is super strong in the airline business, and leads to shitty practices. The reason why you don't get direct, and when you do it ends up being super expensive, is actually really simple. The farther you fly, the more fuel you must carry. Fuel is extremely heavy, costly, and on long flights will be the bulk of the weight of the plane. Basically you get more distance per ounce of fuel, if you carry less. You want to fly twice as long, it would actually cost 8x as much fuel. That is why they lay ppl over, and prefer shorter flights, over long ones.
It's because of overbooking. They intentionally overbook flights because it's likely that x number of people won't show up. By changing your flight you have guarantee that they're overbooked and will have to refund or change someone for free. Thus, they place that expense on the customer willingly changing their ticket.
They'll come up with a thousand excuses, but that's the real reason.
And this is why I ALWAYS carry my passport on my person instead of storing it in a bag. All it takes is misplacing the bag or someone stealing/taking the bag by accident for your life to become a much bigger headache.
Oh my god yesssss I’m to paranoid to not have it on my person and even then I check on it through out the day.
Yeah it was such a headache to get my passport in the first place, that thing is either staying in my safe or on my person at all times
Late comment but this is also why I keep it in my backpack during travel. I couldn’t have imagined losing my passport right before my honeymoon. 😅
Never put passport and travel docs in bag way before flight. So many things could happen and screw you over...
one time i had to send a passport from germany Berlin to bangkok thailand i used UPS and from my home door to the door in bangkok they did it in under 12 hours i dont fucking know how they did it and it costed around 100€ i was fucking amazed
I was thinking, could he not have contacted the embassy to issue a temporary replacement passport or would the airline not accept that document?
@@Nightraven26
It's funny you mention this, I just saw a video of somebody getting a Temporary US Passport (it's purple) and apparently some governments won't accept it.

@@LancesArmorStriking I watched that video as well!
The one where he goes to the Sahara desert, right?
It's just proof that not all customer service in Japan is great. Thank you, bureaucracy. I wonder if it would have been better if he booked on a US carrier or just a non-ANA one.
No I got a similar thing with Delta where they tried to charge me 3k to move up my flight 2 days earlier, the excuse I got though was that this was upgrading me from economy to economy premium or whatever which meant I got a free checked bag which was an addon for my ticket for 150 dollars not the 3k additional they wanted me to pay, which in itself not factoring in I had payed 2k for the ticket was more than the 1.5k ticket I could have booked from them on the same day
I'm sure the service was great, and they were polite all the way while telling Garnt nothing could be done. There's nothing rank and file employees, even the "manager", can do if the company tells them how much to charge.
There's a difference between customer service and the system fcking up. Customer service is great in Japan, but its business bureaucracy is an f-ing. nightmare.
@@jdg7327 Unfortunately, that won't matter to most customers if the result isn't what they want. Getting screwed while the rep is smiling at you is still getting screwed (certainly not the employees fault).
@@RomeDrori Wonder if it's just because they can with more people actually getting to travel now and rising fuel costs. Nice to know it's carrier agnostic.
Reminds me of when I came to Japan just before Covid lockdowns started.
I had two plane tickets cancelled by the airline and never got a refund because... the airline went out of business. FUCK
Guess we already got the OOC clip on the "DO YOU HAVE THE BAG!!!"
Glad you had a good experience with Drop-it, Hide-it, Lose-it (DHL).
Moral of the story: Always remember your passport.
*Never depend on anyone else when it comes to Passport*
Its rumored that Airlines will increase their ticket pricing drastically the closer you get to the date you need to leave because they figure you are either flying for business or are very desperate enough to pay ridiculous prices just to get on the flight on time. While if you book a ticket months in advance they tend to be very cheap because they figure you going for a vacation and probably want to save as much money as possible.
There is a mid point where the sweet spot is. If you book to far in advance they know you need tickets that specific day/week and it is important for you to get there on that date and will charge more. About 90 days seems to be where you find the best deals(at least for long haul) it seems. Airlines know that for most people when you have settled you vacation time with your employer(something many people have to do 6 months in advance) you are locked in to the dates you need to travel.
In cases like this, if you charged it to your credit card, if you call them and explain to them, they usually handle it on your behalf and it's much easier.
sometimes the cancellation fee is even higher than the ticket itself...
And fuel in general is up 60-80%. That directly adjusts the cost of the ticket. I watched a youtube documentary that actually explained that airlines actually lose money on selling a plane ticket and their revenue is from frequent flyer clubs/memberships.
I saw that too but it's kinda hard to believe. Many low cost carriers don't really have these memberships. Sure they upcharge insanely for many things, but even with like 2 bags, a drink, a snack, priority boarding and whatever lottery tickets they try to sell you, it's often still around the same price as "premium" airlines.
I think you can still mail stuff on the weekend in the states.
Some ticket allows you to cancel the itinerary and leave it as an OPEN Ticket for you to use before the ticket expiration. However, change fee, fare difference and tax applies.
airlines have officially become the circus
Ooof. I would have taken physical damage from those costs. That's ridiculous.
When I first read the thumbnail I thought it said they gave him $4000
European airlines have to reimburse your flight if you ask for it, it's a law. This law was not followed before Covid, but with all the cancellation that happened airlines were 100% exposed and finally fucked over this scam. Now it is still not a full reimbursement, you lose 10-20% in the process but changing flight is free. (of course it depends on the company)
That said, don't expect it to happen quickly. I got my refund from an airline last month....1 year and 9 months after the schedule of the flight.
@@Nowolf name and shame
For some reason, I was having so much difficulty reading "airline"...kept reading it as "airpline" lmao.
Not gonna lie.. sometimes garnts aggression is oddly terrifying.
Damn all that extra work all because of a bag lol
That is bad communication
The thumbnail looks like the plane itself is asking for Garnt's money
that was fucked up dude
I would've done chargeback right there and won't do business woth them again
Its not that bad compared to what I lost,I canceled a Business class seat from ANA for 2020 fall(booked it 6 months prior, before Covid struck.)I should have waited til the airline canceled it due to that so I'd get most of my money back but making the foolish mistake back then of canceling it myself,I lost $5100 over a $5300 ticket, the cancelation cost being $5100!
“But they were taking THE PISS!”
'Buy our flexible ticket, it's more expensive, but it saves you the trouble of cancelling and re-booking!'*
(*charge for change of flight is double the charge for cancelling and re-booking)
ya know, this is a common shit with airlines. These are bigger numbers for sure, but it happens on the lower scale to, constantly. cheaper 100-200 dollar tickets, without the flex options, will do the same, refund only 90-160 bucks, or they try to charge you 300+ to change your seat.
i flew from irland to belgium around that time and the first question was ''was i coming from america ?'' i said no and they said i can go ahead but in my head was ... wtf wouldhave happend if i said yes wtf is happening rn ?
At that point Would it be possible to sell your ticket to a third-party for more money than the original seller
you can't sell tickets because it has your name on it.
This is way you don’t buy flexible tickets, even if you need to change it its cheaper to get two of the lowest air fare ones
Where I'm from you can go to the embassy and ask for a temporary passport that is only valid for that specific trip. Someone stole my passport when i was in Thailand and i got a new temp one in like 30 min and could fly back home no problem.
In my experience a flexible ticket means I don't need to pay to change the ticket.
depends on the terms and conditions of the ticket you purchase
4000 extra?! If I was going for a flight and anything was any where near 4000 I'd be staying home, fucking hell

Walk from Japan to America? Ok get started we’ll be waiting for an update.
Actually, it be cheaper to not cancel the first ticket. And buy the new one. Than just don't show up for the first one.
As far I understood he paid 1 grand for the the original ticket and got refunded 100. Therefore paying 900 in cancelling fees.
Not necessarily. A no show on the outbound gives them the right to cancel the return trip as well, which they'd most likely do unless it's a domestic trip.
@@V... Yeah but those fees are daylight robbery.
@@F1ll1nTh3Blanks Well.. Noone said otherwise. But just skipping the outbound and thinking you can use the inbound ticket is a big mistake. just hearing u say it could cost 4000 to change and then 900 for a refund pisses me off man
So ANA is collecting the flex ticket premium so they can collect double the ticket price on a different flight and also get an extra vacant seat on the original flight.

Weird. ANA never asked me for any money when I changed flights with them.

He didn't pay another 900 to cancel did he? When he can just no show?
@@robspunk it's $900 to refund. So he gets $100 back instead of $0
Tbh I've had great experiences with ANA, they're usually really good. Either Covid was extremely rough on them (don't forget people couldn't go to Japan for 2 years until like a week ago) or this is just a standard thing in the airline industry. I'm pretty sure Garnt could've saved a lot more if he used flex to move his ticket to 6 months away then cancel for a smaller cancellation fee.
One word "INFLATION" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh wow 😮
Check out his video from Dogen: “Japanese Banks: Zero interest”
I immediately had to think about that video when I heard this. Absolutely stupid situation 🤦♂️
How can they be so utterly scammy wtf
Inflation in the US in general is doing iron man numbers rn. costs on the whole have gone up etc. It’s cheaper to drive most of the time currently than fly. For example i go to University 18 hours away from my home state, it costs about $1,000 for a flight and it’s never direct due to the location of my uni, where as driving was less than half the price. It honestly wasn’t that much longer of a drive relative to flight travel time when i added in accounted time for layovers etc. It definitely depends on the situation etc, but when I was growing up we never would have considered driving that far as flights were far more affordable.
04:55 One-way Tickets leaves your return flight open for you to choose which airline you want to travel with on your way home, this means that the airline you fly with to your destination isn't guaranteed that you fly with them on your way home, too. So, to make up for some of the potential loss of a return customer, they make the One-way Tickets more expensive than when you buy a Round-trip Ticket because with a Round-trip Ticket they know you will be flying with them both ways, thereby earning them more money from you, and thus making it cheaper because people are generally more likely to give something very expensive for a little less than buying price than they are something already pretty cheap for even cheaper.
09:25 This sounds like Garnt bought the cheapest kind of Economy Seating tickets, if the'd bought the slightly more expensive Economy Seating tickets, a free cancellation and refund would be available, and for way less than $900 or whatever amount that he ended up having to pay to cancel his ticket. Also, even though it's been over 5 years since I last did this, it would also be worth checking prices for both Economy Seating and for the more expensive First Class or Business Seating tickets, because sometimes you'll be able to find those for as much as an Economy Seating Ticket, a little less, or a little more. I think I paid less than $100 more than an Economy Seating ticket cost at the time, only I got First Class tickets instead, and for an 17+ hour flight, that was pure heaven and well worth paying the small extra price to get.
Most people don't even have $4K...

Flights in America are wack because the American airlines took their bailout from the US government and ran. The gov paid them to keep their workforce employed during the pandemic, but wrote no functioning enforcement mechanism into the law for them to follow through on their promise. So they took the billions, and pushed their most experienced workers into early retirement. They fired the lower workers too. So now the problem is they have a reduced, inexperienced workforce who can't keep up with demand. Our transportation secretary isn't doing shit about it either. America is run by the will of corporations.
Never pay to cancel a flight just don't go on the flight and book a new ticket. I have called airlines before and they said yea we can cancel and it will cost you money, but if you just don't show up nothing happens. You just book a new flight yourself.
My advice to Garnt: Get travel insurance, so you don’t have to pay through the nose when airlines pull this shit!

chargeback, blacklist and online review.
Questions. I hardly go overseas (and my country is too small for interstate flights) so excuse my inexperience.
Does cancelling your flight requires you to contact the ticket provider? Is it illegal to just get a new ticket and be off with it?
I believe they charge you a missing fee for wasting a seat, wich coild go up to half your original ticket. Take buying the ticket like a small contract, if you break it or don’t show up your responsible, but now they just abuse it 4K IS MORE THEN A BUSINESS CLASS, AND THOSE ARE LUXURY
Good job ANA manager, now a now an airline I won’t choose
I don't want to defend this awful practice but I just want to mention that Japan has had its borders closed for 2 years and it's very expensive to run an airline with running costs for some months even being higher than what they earn (pre Covid). Tbh I wouldn't have been surprised if they filed for bankruptcy . I've only had good experiences with ANA in the past though I've never had to cancel or move my flights.
Maybe I'm overly trusting/optimisic because of my past experiences but I can't help but look at it from their perspective, they probably amassed a lot of debt from just trying to stay alive throughout the border closure.
