Imagine being a taxi driver in Japan who doesn't really know Japanese, isn't very familiar with the roads, isn't very good with technology, doesn't have very good sense of direction, and isn't very good at driving. Literally no way he could be less qualified.

If the driver doesn't know Japanese, I think it's highly possible the driver is from China, is new to driving in Japan and is not used to right hand drive. That explains the fear of driving out from a parallel parked position and also the fear of doing turns into traffic. Probably not instinctively used to it yet.

I’ve only had one driver who was crappy like and more in personality. Like I nicely pointed out the best way to get to my place near the end of the drive and I could clearly hear an attitude from her voice when she replied to me. Other than that I’ve had nice rides. One guy suggested a buffet place I can go to whenever as the one I wanted to go to had closed down some time back. Another waited for me when I had to quickly run back into the mall as I accidentally left behind the bag that contained my Switch (thankfully that was being held on to for me by the employees at Foot Locker). Multiple have helped me put in the many bags of groceries I got (I do grocery shopping for my dad whenever he can’t) and will also help me unload them or wait till I got everything out before leaving. Those ones definitely get the biggest tip possible. Heck one guy even discounted the price of his ride because of how long it would take him to get to me. (which only happened because the other guy I was assigned to bailed about halfway into his drive to me despite him being closer)

XD man Connor I was a bit stressed listening to this. Its always when you need things to be timely, things find a way to get messed up. The closest experience I had to this wasn't from a cab It was middle school bus driver. I attended art club and how it worked in my situation with after school activities is the bus drivers have a list of students names, and address who attend these things so they can dropped home. There were roughly 6 people on bus dropping people off one by one, and then we get to me, The driver doesn't move for a minute, turns to me and goes, I don't know how to get here. And I was so confused, didn't expect this I never had a bus driver no know how to take me home. It took a while of explaining, and few wrong turns later, He does get me home safe but I wasn't ready for that at all.

He was dispatched through the comms and was only told to go to the pick up point and that the ride was already paid for in advance. A few weeks later I tried the same taxi company through the app and now only allowed cash.
On a separate note, I tried to get a cab through the app and failed multiple times consecutively and was only able to get one by giving a phone call.

It was a THING and I was already mentally fried by the time we even found a taxi. The ride started out fine, except that he was watching sumo wrestling on a dash-mounted tv. He missed his turn, so he literally stopped the car and put it in reverse to go like 100 yds back to the turn. He then got lost, so he stopped the counter and drove to a gas station to get directions. I was astounded he was a professional 😅 we eventually got to our ryokan.

Didn't Connor say the driver is a Chinese? The app 滴滴(Didi) is Chinese. It was even once traded on NYSE but now only traded in OTC market because Chinese government forced it to quit US market for 'information security' reason. How do I know this? Because I am a Chinese :( Now I guess you guys get the key takeaway from Connor's story.
'Di' is not even a regularly used phoneme in Japanese. They have to type ディ which is only used in Gairaigo like Disneyland (ディズニーランド). So they designed something like King Dedede which is デデデ but they would never design a character named dididi(ディディディ).
The title should be Insane Chinese Taxi Driver in Japan REFUSES to Cooperate.
Oh also the pictures showing the traffics are wrong I guess. It is on the left in Japan. Maybe the editor of this video is from US. And also in China it is on the right like in US. I guess Didi pulled him from China to drive in Japan because the cost of labor could be cheaper (or Japanese drivers are not willing to be hired by a Chinese company). And since things are reversed this guy is not used to drive on the left. And driving in China is... I would say very reckless compared to US and Japan. Drivers in US are very nice especially in small towns and rural area. So avoid the snake oil next time. Just use Uber.

If he is from china, that explains pretty much all of this. I just learned about the difference in driving from the comments, but ALSO: until 2020, china didn't even have "GPS". Like, actually. They didn't use the same satellites as the universal GPS network, so their GPS equivalent wasn't complete until the final satellite launch in 2020 (they use their own network called "beidou" which started development in the Soviet era). I'm not sure about its reliability today, but I hear that it was definitely not reliable for quite awhile.
This also means their government wouldn't allow anyone except specifically licensed companies to take location data to make map systems. It seems like it was a mess, maybe still is. So I can understand why he wouldn't use GPS... But that being said, if he's going to run that way, why is he a taxi driver if he doesn't know the roads perfectly.

It sounds like a scam tbh not trying to be negative. If you canceled or you didn't make it to the car in time and it canceled he would still get paid. Sounds like a huge scam! He was also thinking if it may have been a longer ride he would get paid more. He was so nervous you showed up to the car he ended it on an accident.

Is there no public transport in your area? No subway, no train, no bus?
Edit: guess I should've listened up to the end. Still think public transport is the better option, unless you're transporting large objects or have exceptionally heavy and awkward bags. The subways and trains keep to a very strict timetable and it's easy to plan around them. You can also actually trust Google Maps directions and timetables in Japan.

Ah I've heard of workers like these. Basically these guys are cheap labour hired by black companies. Put in tiny dormitories, given uniforms and given a crash course in Japanese (which is often inadequate to near useless). And then... they have to pay back the company with below minimum wage and ungodly hours.
These guys are often cleaners, konbini staffers, garbage men, factory workers, nursing home carers and I guess taxi drivers of very fking sus non-union app-based taxi services.
