- Here’s our patient, John, trying out his new carbon fibre knee ankle foot orthotic, or KAFO, in our Kingston upon Thames clinic.
John contracted polio back in the 1950s, at the age of just 18 months, and has been left living with post-polio syndrome as a result. As a result, he has reduced muscle movement in his left leg and barely any movement at all in his right. Until recently, John was reliant on an outdated calliper that was difficult to maintain, and often became uncomfortable.
Sam Walmsley, LOC’s Lead Orthotist, offered John the opportunity to try out a new, state-of-the-art carbon fibre KAFO, which is stronger, lighter and custom made to John’s requirements.
Thanks to the new KAFO, John’s gait is now more regular, he is able to walk for a mile without having to stop, and the discomfort he was previously experiencing has ceased.
I'm a polio victim and been living with it for almost 37years ...problem is in the part of Africa (Ghana) where I am, post polio therapy is practically nonexistent...and its not been easy for me in recent years...walking is a big problem for me and this is affecting every aspect of my life: relationship, work, etc... I wish I had access to some of these facilities but...just hope i would get help😔😓
