  • How we helped Harris, who was born with amniotic band syndrome, to get back to playing with his friends with a new carbon fibre Ankle Foot Orthosis from the London Orthotic Consultancy.
Amniotic band syndrome happens when thin strings from the amniotic sac wrap around parts of the baby's body in the womb, like their arms or legs. This can cause problems with how those body parts grow, leading to a range of abnormalities such as congenital amputations, clubbed feet, limb length discrepancies, or other deformities. It can affect babies in different ways, from minor to more serious problems.

    Video transcript:
This is Harris. He was born with amniotic band syndrome which can happen during pregnancy when bands of tissue wrap around a developing foetus in the uterus, restricting blood flow and in Harris’ case, his right foot was partially amputated before he was born.
And although he could still walk on his foot, it was difficult for him to run about and play with other children.
No one wanted to make orthotics for him. And only different-sized shoes were available to him on the NHS.
So his parents came to the London Orthotic Consultancy where senior orthotist Jack Choong assessed him, looked at his gait pattern and designed him a bespoke carbon fibre AFO to support his mobility goals and to help him get up and out more easily.
And this is Harris now. Not only is he more comfortable and mobile, but he can run and play with the other children more easily.
We’re all about finding bespoke solutions for every individual patient. No two children are the same and no two orthoses are, either.
