I thought the ML had more of that dry sound we seek from old guitars. I'm still in disbelief that scratching the lacquer can make such a difference. Makes me think the black one's pups were made on a Monday morning following the Superbowl.

Thank you for commenting. Might have to steal that analogy about the Super Bowl 😂

I have a VOS and am VERY glad to have it. Looks, plays and sounds quite fantastic!

Ensure that the height of the pickup is exactly the same as the relative height of the two pickups. Because their influence is really too great, I often adjust them to get completely different sounds.

Great comparison! Must have been hard to film! I struggle to think that the difference in tone is only due to the different finishing, I reckon the electronics are different. Would be a good idea to measure the output on both so we can indeed verify that the Murphy Lab's pickups are slightly lower output.

I own both and it’s just a matter of comfort. ML guitars are made no different than a VOS. The finish is still having flake issues. Save your money and go VOS. While I prefer the ML feel, I’d go VOS since it’s still comfortable and not as gunky as a full on gloss finish

Personally I sold my 2000 LP R9 yesterday to buy a Murphy lab. I tried both at home with my amp. Both sound the same but the finish on the Murphy was better, way less sticky than the regular custom shop and the frets and the Carmelita fine C neck shape on the Murphy lab were awesome too…so good bye 2000 custom shop even if it is great and hello Murphy lab.

Congrats on your new guitar man! Yes I personally own 2 Murphy labs, they’re awesome 🤟 thanks for watching and commenting. Which finish option did you go for and what burst?

@@squealingpigguitars2438 thanks man! The one I have at home is in Mojave fade ultra light aged finish l, zebra pick-ups and Carmelita fine C neck shape. But it is not mine, we bought it for a special birthday of a friend on June 16th. I received it, checked it and tested it. And I was blown away… so I sold my R9. I think I will go for an ultra light or light aged finish. For the burst I think lemon, poppy or kindred burst… but I like a lot of bursts..
I know you own the back 335 which is killer but what’s the second one?

@@JeanDothat’s awesome mate! Yes I’d recommend a kindred burst, we had one in last year and I’m still losing sleep on the fact I didn’t buy it 😂 the two Murphy labs that I have are the 335 and the 64 sg in this video the heavy aged. Keep us updated on whether you end up with with a ML reissue. Thanks 🤟

I had a very similar situation. These Murphy lab re-issues are way more Historically accurate in both their parts and tone than the older custom shop reissues. I do not miss my 2016 R9 that i traded towards the Murphy lab at all!

One has lower output pickups? I mean they are both nice, but horses for courses I guess.

I just when playing live it makes hardly any difference what guitar your playing. As long as you are comfortable with the instrument
