  • Denver Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno started doing CrossFit in 2011 and, to nobody's surprise, started performing worse on the field. I recorded this roast in 2014, the year Moreno stopped playing professional football; I'll leave you to figure out why after watching this video.

@@jauchi5078 A lot of talented athletes don't know what part of their training gives them the most benefit. I could imagine this guy thinking "wow, this workout feels worse than the sprints I've done at practice, it must be effective at making me a better athlete". What he fails to realise that the sprints were just conditioning, and that his coach programed strength training is the core of his speed/size development. One problem I see in the athletic training industry is that, athletic strength training isnt terribly complicated so to get work, these trainers more or less make up excercises with dubious effectiveness in order to stand out. Elite athletes are great despite mediocre training not because of it. Sub elite athletes get burned and are never talked about it. Iirc LeBron lost some weight and athleticism a few years back with a wooshoo trainer. That trainer still gets to put Lebron on his resume despite possibly making him worse.

I started doing CrossFit in the Marines back 2007. It was new back then. After about 6 months of doing it I was able to drop an entire minute on my 3 mile run time. Was already running sub 18 min 3 miles. However, as time went on doing CrossFit, I accumulated a number of injuries. Being completely exhausted and then banging out 10 reps of 275- 300lb deadlfits, or 135lb thrusters is dangerous. My lower back and shoulder are permanently fucked from doing CrossFit.
It’s hard to keep a proper form when your on your 5th round of 3 to 5 different exercises for time, with zero rest. I think you need to separate power lifting and high intensity calisthenic interval training. Onnit has a great approach to this with their workouts. I quit doing CrossFit back in 2016 and I have focused on exactly what the guy is talking about in the video. I can tell you my overall strength and recovery from previous injuries has improved significantly. Just my 2 cents

Start from square 1: A healthy, strong, athletic base, bury yourself into the ground practicing half reps, reps to failure, burning out your CNS, ruin your bar speed, ruin your explosive power, repeatedly fatigue your tendons, detrain into a slow twink with an elevated resting HR and rhabdo...sounds great for football.

emperor palpatine for the average American CrossFit isn’t that bad but for different reasons. Before you lynch me let me explain. The average American is an obese piece of shit that does nothing. Doing anything is better than that and if you do CrossFit there are dozens of people (like that overhype coach and people in your class) who will guilt you into actually working. That being said even average Americans shouldn’t do CrossFit.
For lifters or athletes, CrossFit is a complete piece of shit because it’s all cheating movements. You cheat on the movements like the kipping pull-up and hitching deadlifts. This cheating movement doesn’t give you any more strength it instead just boosts your ego since you can stack on more weight or do more reps making you feel better. This is useless to an athlete who actually needs the strength and explosiveness but has been doing cheater lifts the whole time. Think about it, if I do 10 legit pull-ups slowly and you do 15 using momentum violently swinging your body, who has a stronger back?
Oh yeah, a lot of movements in CrossFit are dangerous too. Proper form exists so you can lift heavy ass shit without hurting yourself. People get injured when they do 2 things, use too much weight because ego or your form is shit, both of which CrossFit does.

Having a Masters degree in Exercise Science, I would like to contribute: high level athletes must not perform useless activities that cannot positively contribute to the attainment of a specific objective. The training means must be able to emphasize, the magnitude of force-effort and increasing the velocity of force effort. The aim of training is to improve the sport result. Increasing the motor potential and the athletes capacity to utilize the motor potential, increases the working effect of movement patterns thus increasing sports performance. In laymen terms, specific exercise are needed to increase specific movement patterns; acclamation to exercise must occur, and increasing the muscular work over the specific term increases performance. Doing the same workout as everyone else, may not increase performance for a high level athlete.

I am very much into Crossfit and couldn't agree more! Crossfit foundation is being "Generally" good at everything. GOOD doesn't cut it in professional sports! But just like everything else it's the few blatant bad incidents that get the most visibility. On a whole each individual needs to be aware of what they can and can't do. But even with good coaching I see it all the time where the younger members push each other into doing dumb things and getting hurt! But when I was young I did a lot of stupid shit too. I'm 50 years young, with a total knee replacement and CF has helped me tremendously. It's taken almost two years and I've never been hurt once. I have great coaches who believe in monitoring everyone. In fact they don't even put RX on the board most of the time. They tell you what % of your max you should be at and even then make you perform the movement for a 1 round or cycle through a few to see how your form is. Anyway I'm glad Crossfit is getting back to functional fitness and away from just the "GAMES"!
