Exercises in Futility - How CrossFit Ruined a Football Career

- Denver Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno started doing CrossFit in 2011 and, to nobody's surprise, started performing worse on the field. I recorded this roast in 2014, the year Moreno stopped playing professional football; I'll leave you to figure out why after watching this video.

"Sounds legit, let's give the NFL player the same workout as the soccer mom right next to him."
aisforairborne thats exactly what I had in my head even before he said that line lol. I was like “WTF?”
Literally read this comment at the same time he was saying it 😂
That was the best line of the whole video
It's all done to a scale, her workout could be easy, where his could be really difficult.. same workout, different intensity & weights
LMFAO
Why would any professional athlete be in a class with average joes and soccer moms?
weak joe*
Any level of humility? He would also be training with his team all the time. Its probably more of a social thing for him I imagine.
Lol and then I kept watching and the sports illustrated article popped up. It was in the off season he did it and his performance really dropped off. Lol crossfit is such a joke to the whole athletic world and everywhere you look there is proof of how stupid it really is.
Wants retirement
Why not? Is he not just a person like you and me...just cause he’s a pro doesn’t mean he needs to surround himself with just pro ball players.
I like how the "coach" is surprised that he does well since he's "not a crossfitter"
He's a professional athlete and you're an embarrassment.
And he said "he doesn't have the experience that a lot people here do". The NFL pro absolutely has more experience with strength and conditioning than anyone in that gym, the coach included.

So fucking cringeworthy.
I remember when I did crossfit and we were doing snatches. My coach told me I wasn't doing the exercise properly and I was just using my strength to lift. Well I did it her way and ended up with a torn rotator cup. NEVER BEEN BACK!!!!
Jesus. Lifting weights fast and with poor form is a recipe for disaster.
I mean you should’ve figured it out when she complained about the fact “you’re using your strength to lift” in a strength exercise.
banjo guy what else would he use to lift other than his strength? The fucken force?
banjo guy fr guys a dumbass
The biggest donators to CrossFit ™ are chiropractors.
So he literally got smaller and weaker from crossfit 😂😂

@maverickM249 you still HAVE to read the book
CrossFit needs to stay in their lane and stop messing with professional athletes.
It's like natural selection. There are enough red flags to stay away from crossfit. If you're still doing it despite being warned that it's a complete mockery of lifting and that it will get you injured you kinda deserve what's coming.

In all fairness this moron running back should have a small amount of common sense and not join this garbage.
Training CrossFit in conjunction with another sport is a horrible idea.

You dont need a professional to tell you thats bullshit
@@jauchi5078 A lot of talented athletes don't know what part of their training gives them the most benefit. I could imagine this guy thinking "wow, this workout feels worse than the sprints I've done at practice, it must be effective at making me a better athlete". What he fails to realise that the sprints were just conditioning, and that his coach programed strength training is the core of his speed/size development. One problem I see in the athletic training industry is that, athletic strength training isnt terribly complicated so to get work, these trainers more or less make up excercises with dubious effectiveness in order to stand out. Elite athletes are great despite mediocre training not because of it. Sub elite athletes get burned and are never talked about it. Iirc LeBron lost some weight and athleticism a few years back with a wooshoo trainer. That trainer still gets to put Lebron on his resume despite possibly making him worse.
Should ask Jeff Cavalier to be his trainer...

I started doing CrossFit in the Marines back 2007. It was new back then. After about 6 months of doing it I was able to drop an entire minute on my 3 mile run time. Was already running sub 18 min 3 miles. However, as time went on doing CrossFit, I accumulated a number of injuries. Being completely exhausted and then banging out 10 reps of 275- 300lb deadlfits, or 135lb thrusters is dangerous. My lower back and shoulder are permanently fucked from doing CrossFit.
It’s hard to keep a proper form when your on your 5th round of 3 to 5 different exercises for time, with zero rest. I think you need to separate power lifting and high intensity calisthenic interval training. Onnit has a great approach to this with their workouts. I quit doing CrossFit back in 2016 and I have focused on exactly what the guy is talking about in the video. I can tell you my overall strength and recovery from previous injuries has improved significantly. Just my 2 cents
I mean... Could have just done insanity instead of crossfit for a better cardio time. Crossfit was a joke on release and Im really sorry you got scammed man.
Have you heard of the bpc-157? A month or two of body protective compound might do wonders
How do you go from having the best weight training programs in college to thinking CrossFit is what you need to improve your play In the NFL? Running backs are squatting 500 pounds, benching 350... this is sad that he thinks this is the best choice for his career.
You could tell the trainer is making shit up as his going. How could you trust someone that hasn't trained professional athletes, he doesn't even watch the sport, how could he make you better when he has no clue of the sport. He should've stick to whatever got him to NFL
Johnson Johnson yeah really is his own fault
he starts moaning about tightness in the posterior chain (which is probably (within reason) a good thing for the NFL as it protects the spine), but then goes on about rear delts? this guy just splurges things to sound clever like any PT in their first year. He then teaches box squats wrong and encourages a tight posterior and anterior pelvic tilt. What an absolute melon.
Heartbreaking. Even if nothing forced him to join, you gotta feel for people that become susceptible to woo fitness.
No hard feelings when it comes to a guy who should know better.
He seems like a nice guy just a dummy that fell prey to the dark cult of kipping . Poor kid
Feel bad for the football player since he seems like a genuinely nice person. Hope he's doing fine after those dipshits did him dirty.

Why wasn’t he working out with his team
Cuz he gay
It was during the Off-season. This is where players who want to get "better" start to train on their specific needs for next year. This young man thought that cross-fit would help him and it ended up burning him out.
@@jokersoulja and you think team-mates don't train together in the off-season? Just because it's not schedualled and enforced by the team/admin doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I seriously doubt the Cowboys chain the door to the Gym after Superbowl Sunday and leave it locked until September.
@@maxdecphoenix Obviously not. I did not state he never trained with his teammates. I stated he wanted to use cross-fit as a tool to help him perform better on the field. You and I don't know the variables between him and his teammates. Maybe they did do a work-out together, maybe they didn't. We don't know. All we know is that he messed up his body doing cross-fit.
They don’t have team workouts in the nfl. You can always train with the people on your team it’s just not organized.
This has a “The Office” feel to it.
The coach went full Pete with this moustache.
Start from square 1: A healthy, strong, athletic base, bury yourself into the ground practicing half reps, reps to failure, burning out your CNS, ruin your bar speed, ruin your explosive power, repeatedly fatigue your tendons, detrain into a slow twink with an elevated resting HR and rhabdo...sounds great for football.
How and why does crossfit fuck you up?
@Logic Prime cheers 👍
emperor palpatine for the average American CrossFit isn’t that bad but for different reasons. Before you lynch me let me explain. The average American is an obese piece of shit that does nothing. Doing anything is better than that and if you do CrossFit there are dozens of people (like that overhype coach and people in your class) who will guilt you into actually working. That being said even average Americans shouldn’t do CrossFit.
For lifters or athletes, CrossFit is a complete piece of shit because it’s all cheating movements. You cheat on the movements like the kipping pull-up and hitching deadlifts. This cheating movement doesn’t give you any more strength it instead just boosts your ego since you can stack on more weight or do more reps making you feel better. This is useless to an athlete who actually needs the strength and explosiveness but has been doing cheater lifts the whole time. Think about it, if I do 10 legit pull-ups slowly and you do 15 using momentum violently swinging your body, who has a stronger back?
Oh yeah, a lot of movements in CrossFit are dangerous too. Proper form exists so you can lift heavy ass shit without hurting yourself. People get injured when they do 2 things, use too much weight because ego or your form is shit, both of which CrossFit does.
chi wrong. Doing anything is NOT better than doing nothing when it comes to CrossFit. Obese people should never do that bullshit. There are better options. They’ll go from obese to fat and injured.
emperor palpatine basically its fatigue seeking, which is the worst thing for speed athletes
With real trainers in the NFL why would he fall for this crap. Then he gives blocking advice to a NFL player who was a first round pick. Is he going to be a NFL coach because he watched a game before.
From 14 to 40 pull-ups
I know 14 pull-ups is impressive
But 40 CrossFit pull-ups I have no idea what that means
Let's put it this way, Crossfit pullups not only have garbage form, but rely mostly on momentum and at a couple of strong cheat actions for multiple reps. It overall takes less than half the power for Crossfit pullups than for real ones.
4 normal pull ups looks more impressive than 40 cross fit pull ups. Cross fit pull ups look like the guy is completely exhausted and just trying to finish
man i can do 10 pull ups and i’m not in the nfl. how fucking weak is he ?
14 is impressive 40 crossfit pull ups are easier than a single real pull up
Shit becomes cardio
True. It's like if someone does the worm 40x, is that the same as 40 push ups?

Man this is sad... He seems like a real nice and hard working guy that unfortunately got duped by this crossfit bullshit.

CrossFit is good for competing in CrossFit. If you play sports at a high level focus on stuff that will help you do what you are playing for.
Right , it's like if an nfl player would train like a strongman. Crossfitters don't know what specialization is.
This all boils down to ego. There are so many in the fitness industry with the Trainer - Ego mentality in thinking their ideas and way of training is the End All - Be All in overall fitness and it can push any athlete, regardless of what sport they play to the next level and beyond. WRONG 👎

I thought pro athletes had their own trainers with the team and a set plan for training. I'm surprised the team would let him do this.
E B They do, but the video was made in 2014, and I’d say the video he’s roasting was made in like 2012/2013. So it’s around the time CrossFit was really blowing up, and CrossFit “trainers” were slipping into training camps and spreading its methodology into the regimen. Having a Masters degree in Exercise Science, I would like to contribute: high level athletes must not perform useless activities that cannot positively contribute to the attainment of a specific objective. The training means must be able to emphasize, the magnitude of force-effort and increasing the velocity of force effort. The aim of training is to improve the sport result. Increasing the motor potential and the athletes capacity to utilize the motor potential, increases the working effect of movement patterns thus increasing sports performance. In laymen terms, specific exercise are needed to increase specific movement patterns; acclamation to exercise must occur, and increasing the muscular work over the specific term increases performance. Doing the same workout as everyone else, may not increase performance for a high level athlete.

Starts Crossfit, blows out his knees the same year. Can't write it any better.
I am very much into Crossfit and couldn't agree more! Crossfit foundation is being "Generally" good at everything. GOOD doesn't cut it in professional sports! But just like everything else it's the few blatant bad incidents that get the most visibility. On a whole each individual needs to be aware of what they can and can't do. But even with good coaching I see it all the time where the younger members push each other into doing dumb things and getting hurt! But when I was young I did a lot of stupid shit too. I'm 50 years young, with a total knee replacement and CF has helped me tremendously. It's taken almost two years and I've never been hurt once. I have great coaches who believe in monitoring everyone. In fact they don't even put RX on the board most of the time. They tell you what % of your max you should be at and even then make you perform the movement for a 1 round or cycle through a few to see how your form is. Anyway I'm glad Crossfit is getting back to functional fitness and away from just the "GAMES"!
