It's a song about betrayal. When Annie was 14 a girl offered to be her "best friend" but that only lasted til her real best friend split with her bf and became available again.
The message is universal and reminds to value proper friendship and reject those who cower behind falsehood.

I feel like there was, in general, a great sense of imagination when it came round to writing music back in the 80s than there is today. I could be wrong of course, but that's the impression I tend to get.

This is an absolute timeless classic. Annie Lennox voice is beautiful on this track. One of my faves by them. Was too young to appreciate how good Eurythmics were at their peak. Glad I can hear more of their tunes on here. 80s music was so good.

Ploffy Kha , Actually i would say that is a matter of opinion i always thought she was very beautiful in a female way .....she just had a more aggressive edge to her much like Grace Jones a stunning woman . But then i have never been one to believe that in order to be seen as a beautiful woman you had to have big breasts or long flowing hair . Pat Benatar another great example very sexy and attractive in a female way but with just enough of that don't mess with me tomboy look still feminine to me just edgier . I will agree with you on one point however she did butch it up more to distance her self from many others back then . She wanted to be known and respected for her talent .

I saw the Eurythmics in concert one time only. 1987 in Costa Mesa, California. The show opened with Annie stepping out of a huge zipper, like she was coming out of a huge leather jacket. Crowd went wild. I was hoarse for three days from screaming.
