    If I had to pick one single Phish jam to illustrate their improvisational abilities, it'd probably be this one. Taken as a whole, this Denver show is one of the best I've ever heard and has some amazing jams - Tweezer, Reba, this Ghost, the YEM, Wolfman's, and DWD were all fantastic specimens of that fall 97 funky sound.

I distinctly remember specific jams of songs friends would play for me and how I couldn’t believe that 4 dudes could produce such a sound. I’m still in awe to this day of what they’re doing, but that late 90s Phish is utter bliss. They really stretched their creative ideas and took them to places I feel they haven’t gone since. Still, there were some incredible jams on their last tour that I’ve heard. But the 90s….what a band!

    Surprised isn't the precise word. Disappointed is the precise word I would use to describe how I feel when I look at the comment section of this video. There has not been an utterance at the reception of a gargantuan blow to the mind that is this performance for two years? Does anyone but me get nourishment from this video? I understand that there are a finite number of phans & that many of the ones who have this performance as a regular part of their life have probably commented here already. But no new ears listening to this? No new eyes watching this? With the sheer overwhelming amount of music out there, cross- referenced, connected by chance via algorithm, word-of-mouth, more people with more time on their hands sitting watching videos during the pandemic, just simply the millions of glitches in people's online experience SOMEWHERE in cyberspace that would lead someone here, that's a lot of potential for hundreds if not thousands of young birds or blokes to just STUMBLE in here. If that has been going on for the past two years, NO COMMENT FROM ANY OF THEM? It's the same phenomenon with other phish performances that are considered "best-of", go-to, introduce your friends during the 420 dance.
    Folks, it just doesn't add up. Either that, or maybe we're just not as special as we thought we were 😶

    • @CraigKeidel
      @CraigKeidel Před 2 lety

      New listener here, this is the first Phish jam I've picked up after reading a pretty good article earlier today about a new Phish fan's intro to the band. I'm pretty apprehensive about jam bands on the whole, I find most of them just use the title "jam" to noodle endlessly and often lose the point of a jam... Moe included, these last few years, sad to say. Big Dead fan though, and the first 7 minutes (as of this writing) are promising. We'll see how I feel when they really get into it, though.

    • @CraigKeidel
      @CraigKeidel Před 2 lety

      Could have done a few measures shorter at some of the passages, but overall pretty good. I'll give 'em a go once I'm done with my Motorhead kick. In regards to why there's not a surplus of new ears on it, I'd say a lot of it comes down to rock not being the dominant genre in popular music anymore, and most music being written with an ear to keep it short and friendly. Hell, no matter how good Atom Heart Mother is by Floyd, you're hard pressed to find many people in Gen Y or Gen Z willing to commit 30 minutes to a song. 21 minutes on a random track on CZcams is going to turn most off on time alone, I reckon Phish only shows up to people already initiated into long jam tracks... And amongst those, most probably already know the name Phish.

      @@sethbaker5261 right on. And I thought I was a new Phan. I got an ipod touch for me b-day that year and I put a large collection of live show recordings I had put off listening to. I had them just because, I wasn't a Phan. One by one, each song lured me in, much like the Dead 10 years earlier. Yeah I was a latecomer to that too, way late. But each song would get me, like kernels of popcorn, just randomly every week, month, year whatever. You have an amazing road ahead, young man.

    Love grateful dead, lot of dead cover bands nothing compares to sensation of hearing darkstar on two from the vault etc. But you get bands influenced by Phish no cover bands. Like Coltrane or miles you have to go for it to such a degree moments and style can't be replicated and that's why people follow them devotedly not for what happened in past because anytime they are gutsy enough to go for it like this and all four stick the landing. Great bands out there they paved their own path Django to sinti, bill Monroe to high lonesome or grisman, pat Metheny, Keith Jarrett, miles and trane but none of others stayed the course. Be like miles 59 or 65 quintet with trane or shorter played and evolved together 30 years exploring genres. It's wild will not be duplicated in this style. Billy strings is doing some incredible stuff and has the charisma/bravato to take on dead , dgq, Phish, doc Watson, covers everything Alice in chains nutshell cover is incredible. Hope he sits down and learns "improvisation" by Django only stochelo has done that piece justice

    Trey is not the old trey. The other 3 are better then ever, but something is missing from trey. I still love it, but what once was, will never be again. It's ok though, so many shows from the 90s to listen to! And phish can still throw the best party in town!

      @ianfinnneman4352 Před 8 lety +4

      7/23/97 is just as good. I like it better. But to each their own. Once you get into best ever territory, it's always going to be a matter of personal preference, although a top 5 consensus can be fairly easy to agree on sometimes. We might not always agree on the top spot, but that's usually about five versions that most people can agree on any one of those being the best.
