- Transcript @ www.amarguitar.com/nassau. Today we'll dissect the influences that shaped Tweezer and the magic behind one of the best Phish jams of the 2.0 era. A complete guitar lesson & bass lesson on this song are next up in this series, as well as an in-depth study of the modal approach behind Trey's beautiful solo at the 9 minute mark.

This video must have taken you weeks to put together and it shows! A couple months ago, you blew me away with the deepest dive I've ever come across for the Went Gin and now you've matched, if not eclipsed, that exegesis while celebrating the 15th anniversary of the canonical Nassau Tweezer. I'm just floored that this was published over two weeks ago yet it hasn't even garnered 10k views. Where the fuck are all the Phish fans? Or is the CZcams algorithm screwing you over? I'm guessing it's the latter because I can't think of a single Phish fan with whom I'm friends, know fairly well, or just "show" acquaintances who wouldn't relish the opportunity to learn about, or just relive from a new perspective, this beloved rendition of Tweezer. I hope this doesn't discourage you from investing in future video histories. You are entertaining and enlightening a community that prides itself on the breadth and depth of its knowledge.
If I had to guess, I would say that I've listened to the Went Gin at least a couple hundred times over the past 20 years and the Nassau Tweezer in the ballpark of 50-75 times since '03. Since I don't play an instrument, I don't understand (or even think about) musical composition or theory when I listen to Phish or other bands. And yet you made the nomenclature easily accessible to someone who has no history with it. I appreciate the way you articulated why the band members seemed to make certain choices as they listened to each other on stage and how, with just the slightest physical motion or sonic cue, they signal to each other their ideas and even their disapproval if they don't like what's unfolding. Most of all, I dug the manner in which you connected the history of music in both the main points and minutiae of the Nassau Tweezer. I had no idea the pentatonic scale held an aurally and instinctually universal appeal. I also never gave a great deal of thought to the the musical styles that directly influenced the compositional, as opposed to the improvisational, part of Tweezer. I dug the manner in which you introduced how the music of their salad days directly informed the style in which Trey and Mike developed their scored parts,
from the Tweezer Tap (born from Eddie Van Halen and guitarists even before him) to the slap bass line ('70s funk/Larry Graham) that makes the intro and verses so compelling. Even the conceptual examples with which most Phish fans are intimately familiar, like Carlos Santana and The HOSE, are instantiated in a way that both entertains as well as augments our historical knowledge of Phish.
Please keep up the great work! What you're doing is unique and we need more of it. This fucking behemoth of a website is suffocating under the weight of crackpot conspiracy theorists, humans too narcissistic or lonely to understand that their cats aren't the center of the goddamn universe, and talking heads who make a living demeaning others and shouting down anyone who dares to highlight an alternative to their intractable system of beliefs. Apart from the drivel that dominates CZcams's algorithmic triggers, and slowly lobotomizes its audience, those who love music can find hundreds (or in the case of GD, Phish, Cheese: thousands) of hours of concert footage, a plethora of music teachers imparting them with detailed strategies and techniques to improve on pretty much any instrument, and interviews of musicians ranging from The Beatles to The Decemberists, Sam Bush to Kate Bush. But what you've produced here is entirely unique and stands apart from anything I've ever had CZcams's algorithm suggests as a product of my search history. You have no control over the CZcams algorithm, but just know that there's at least one person out there who's going to link this video to over 100 other Phish fans who will, in turn, let their friends know about it. Thank you for investing so much time into these videos. They are phenomenal.
Agree 100%. Thank you so much for the work and passion you put into these videos. Very impressive indeed.
Holy shit bro that was fucking beautiful. Hahah
I never thought about how phans that are not musicians would view their music. Or music in general. Ive been a musictian my whole life, so you just made it interesring to try and view phish from the perspective of someone with no miscial background. Id love to pick your brain if you woulndt mind sending me a dm on instagram. tylertdshack is my user name. You have a way with words my friend, id like to learn from you.
Uhh yeah, I was gonna say that, but you beat me to it.
Has to be algorithm I'm die hard jazz fan miles, Coltrane, Oscar Peterson, Eric dolphy, bird, all their band players but at 14 Phish was my favorite band they are almost impossible to do justice to beyond rhythm, time, melody, harmony, or modes they provide layer of texture between tone , pick inflections on guitar, lights. Amar does deep dives better than anyone on internet on this band. It's incredible work 🙌
Amen!
The "Hadron Collider" is the Ibanez DM-2000.
Trey once said in an interview...
"I also have an Ibanez DM-2000, one of the first digital delays they ever made. It's got this bug in it. If you have the flange going and you hit the infinite hold button, it totally freaks out. It makes all these awful sounds. That's all I use it for."
Should get an Oscar nom for best documentary, short subject
Hey just because I’m only 5’8” doesn’t mean I need to get an award for it!! : )
if these get any longer you'll be eligible for best documentary feature ;)
@@amarguitar u are a telented film maker and u obviously study your subjet and can play well..why not focus on some REAL music..this is for kids..pure junk..its not sophisticated at all..dio some real music..or a real guitarist
@@guywoodhouse4684 You again? Hey leave amarguitar alone. Go listen you butthole i.e. gene simmons and others a can not play there way out of a paper bag. This my friend is top 3 tweezer of all time. Out.
@@guywoodhouse4684why are you even here ?
This is simply brilliant. Kind of shames anyone who just dismissed Phish without really investigating the band. Fantastic job. Keep 'em coming!
they are garbage
Man, you are fucking awesome! I was at this show with my best friends and yes, without a doubt, it was one of the most spiritual moments of my life. I cannot agree with you more than that feeling having left the concert. I remember before the show in the lot, there was something in the air... there was this patient calmness, this energy emanating from the Coliseum that created this mood, this mood for things to come. 15 years later, I still get chills listening to this Tweezer. I have never, never in my life seen or heard such joy after that performance when they peaked together with Trey's chainsaw chord progression that turned into bright sparks exploding in the sky with Page. I will always regard this concert as one of the best experiences of my life. Love, from Spain...
Damn dude I've never heard this Tweezer. You got me over here crying, god damn. Now I'm jumping up and down like I'm crazy! DOPE ASS JAM.
The digital D-G bends are among my top 3 Phish moments ever. So beautiful.
The best , ever.
I ERNESTly hope you never stop doing these, my friend. Love and light.
agreed!
2/28/03 was the second most important night of my life, only surpassed by the night my son was born.
These videos are perhaps the richest and most well-articulated music content on CZcams.
Your videos on the "Anotomy of a Jam" are the most comprehensive, concise and intricate look at Phish's music than any other synopsis on CZcams! Thank you for providing us fans a "behind the curtain" (with) a glimpse into the genius that these four dudes from Vermont bestow upon us year after year. Keep on making these videos because there are thousands of us that can't enough of your awesome content! Oh....and your guitar instruction videos are unreal!! I watch them often in an effort to get to your level of playing!! Thank you!!
2003 was musical magnificence. Although I lost my job I only missed 2 shows of summer tour. Incredible work Amar.
Just found my new CZcams addiction.....thanks for all the hard work you put into these videos. They are fantastic.
BRINGING IT HOME TO NASSAU FALL 2019 - LET'S GO!!!
elitt all day!!!!!!
I must be deranged because I absolutely love that feedback from 3:55-4:10 on the Nassau Tweezer. Granted I wasn't there, but it's just SO primal and pretty much sets the stage for the shred-fest to come.
we all do
Lol me too
It hurt in person, and it was awesome. It was basically Trey telling everyone to WAKE THE F UP...something's coming.
Yup. It was on purpose. OP seems to think it was a mistake
I was there. Loved it. Not a mistake.
This tweezer IS AT THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN.
Oh god. I've been waiting for this
Not only are you a great guitar teacher, you are an excellent filmmaker. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Where can I nominate this for Phish Webby of the Year?
This is insanely fantastic.
Amazingly well done video, Amar! I'm an aspiring pianist who decided to start deep within their 20's. Watching your videos and how you breakdown jams has given me a ton of joy when I transfer it to piano. I can't play like Phish, but I can play along and feel pretty decent about myself! I look forward to more videos like these in the future. Thank you
That’s so cool to hear, thanks Alex!
Phenomenal breakdown.
Players and fans are going to be referring to these videos for years to come, buddy. Keep them coming!
Great video. I was fortunate enough to be at this show as well. I still listen to this Tweezer often.
This needs to be on Netflix. Thanks so much man!
That digital pitchbend is my favorite moment in Phishtory.
I know that this is a video on musical analysis, but your prose is incredible and the narrative that you presented flowed beautifully. This is honestly one of my favorite videos that I’ve seen in months. Well done.
never knew I needed this level of thoughtful nerd before (never understood what the music was for lol)
Thank you for sharing.
It's easy to take Phish for granted as masters, which I've done for over twenty years, but knowing the how and why is so cool. Explaining the "rules" should simplify things, but to me it just intensifies my admiration and awe. Great video!
Great Baldwin quote selection. Sonny's Blues--required reading for musicians!
100% agreed!
Thanks for the work you put into these. They're so much fun to watch.
I always love these, thank you for the in-depth analysis.
This is exceptional work. Thank you, and please keep them coming!
Love your breakdowns and love this jam, thanks man.
Absolutely incredible insight. Thank you!
What an amazingly well done video, thank you for sharing !
Wow. I'm 59 years old, from the UK and only this month listened to Phish. I'm blown away. Their music and this video have been very inspiring to me. Thank you. I'm gonna pick up my guitar again... ;-)
This is incredible thank you!
Fishman has always been the heart and soul of Phish. He's a beast and one of a kind.
Amazing. Thanks Amar! Your editing and overlays are awesome. Please keep it coming.
Incredible video and narrative! Thanks for creating this!!
Awesome vid man! Prob the best show and jam I've seen in 58 shows since 98.
You do an outstanding job on these videos. I look forward to many more.
Man....hit my 100th show in St. Louis last week for the tour opener...as soon as they busted into 46 days we knew it was gonna be one of "those" nights 🤗 guess it's good Leigh passed away 😉🤣
these are so incredibly well down and illuminating. thanks, amar & more please!
Great video. Best one yet IMO. This goes beyond analysis and offers some nice perspective. Keep up the goodness!
Another awsome AOJ Amar!
I am just discovering these “Analysis” videos and I am thoroughly enjoying. Being that I play bass for a band that covers a lot of Phish music, these videos are right down my alley. I just saw the bathtub gin one last night and now this one, I will keep digging into your files and keep doing these vids my man, love it!
Great stuff, thank you for these videos. Nothing like a peak musical experience! It’s life changing.
These are so cool man
My first Phish show was 1989 in Somerville, MA. My 2 best friends were at UVM at the time and saw them several times in that period as well. Recently saw them last year at Mohegan Sun. I taped a whole tour back in 1993 also... Fun band...
Phan for 25 years, musician for 32.....THANK YOU
This is absolutely incredible. So well done and with such deep appreciation for the music and what it offers us. THANK YOU.
Thanks Amar. Really top-notch, quality work and analysis. Truly grateful for the time and effort you have put into these.
bloody brilliant
That moment you talk about at 16:20...that moment for every phish fan is “Ass Handed”
Magnificently crafted Amar. Thanks so much.
Great stuff. Love your musical, historical, and philosophical/spiritual analysis. Thank you for this.
Whoa! This video is as monstrous as Tweezer itself!
You are without doubt the master of teaching this stuff.
I love how you said that a Phish jam is like a hike in the woods. I've made the exact analogy with a lot of improvised music. Relating it to an adventure.
A lot of 2.0 and early 3.0 is off my radar as I stopped listening to them around 99 - only to return again a few years ago. So, I'm always open for more recommendations from this era.
And good on you for including "Effortless Mastery" - a book everyone should read.
Gonna go listen to this Tweezer in full now.
Thanks so much for the kind words, Marcus! That’s high praise coming from such an amazing teacher as yourself. The IT Ghost and SPAC piper have to be my two other favorite jams of 2.0, I think you’d really dig them! Effortless Mastery totally changed my understanding and approach to music, it sounds like it had a similar effect on you?
Thanks for the recommendations.
Yeah man - for about a year after reading Effortless Mastery I bought copies for all my closest musician friends. His ideas on total body, especially finger, awareness while playing changed my life for sure.
amarguitar Amar is this your all time phave Tweezer? 11/17/97, 12/6/97 Tweezabella, 7/31/13 (Tahoe)? I love 2.28.03 for it's beauty and filthy at the same time.
This is truly exceptional! Please keep doing these. You have a gift and I just want to thank you for all the time and effort you put into these!
This is awesome. More please.
This is amazing. Thank you.
This is a really great breakdown. More please.
Loving these! Great work.
Really appreciate the work you put into these vids, your insight and musical knowledge is impressive.
These videos are very, very well done. I wrote a lengthy comment and deleted it. I'll just say that this is not easy to do and to get right, this dissection, and I always appreciate people who let others know, or try to, that they may like "jam bands" (hate the term, nobody "jams the same", not two nights , much less two years, and... musical conversations take so many forms, it's easy to think that "jam" means the whole "we go on forever because people tripping will listen to anything". The best way to see past that is to go to the roots which you did, blues and jazz conversation, and you got the sprinkling of music theory accessible to non-musicians ( I assume it is, and I would think interesting to non-musicians) made this so much more than I expected, and jaded me expects too much, always, and got more than I imagined would be covered, and then about ten times more than that. Well done, very well done.
Fantastic video, thank you! I also love the way you ended it on a positive vibe.
I love these so much, really helping me during a hard time. Thank you!
33:10 ‘Do You Feel Like I Do’ the first note to start the lead guitar part of the song Trey is riffing on for a great bit. This is inspired by a fan up close center with a huge sign for that song, requested. I seen it all front row on the rail left side. I’m the tallest person over there. It was my birthday and this was the greatest thing I ever experienced on any birthday ever. Best song I’ve witnessed by PHiSH. Great segue into the first Soul Shakedown Party On American soil. At the end of the set they waved and were grinning and ready to go back for a few minutes and return to get at it again while the crowd was in a frenzy. They played a long encore and the Mexican Cousin was surprisingly great for a warmup for the inevitable Tweeprise! What a treat to reprise the mind blowing Tweezer and Kuroda had dialed in a very choice effect for this special night and a beautiful and amazing display of lighting drove this Tweeprise to the limits of aural and visual stimulation and the band especially Trey truly did not want to leave the stage after a rare band member bow center stage. Trey was the last to leave and thanked the crowd repeatedly. There was no set list for this set. There was a piece of paper on an amplifier that he would look at from time to time that whole year but it was abandoned for this second set. Great video and info. BTW Phish got their name from all the ‘60’s and ‘70’s bands that would misspell an animal’s name like the Beatles, the Byrds, The Monkees, etc. Fishman’s name is a ‘red herring’ lol. Trey tells this on an Easter egg on one of their DVD’s. Now for a breakdown of that Camden Sand...
"we* do"
Great job you are a talented person! I will enjoy digging through your videos.
This is so awesome. Very well put together and articulated. Would make for an awesome podcast!
Dude, I really appreciate the amount of effort and time you've put into your content. These "Anatomy of a Jam" videos have given me a whole new appreciation for Phish.
Thank you so much for making these videos! I subscribed man! Phish is the greatest band in the world! When I heard this jam for the first time I cried tears of joy as I felt totally one with myself and the universe! Phish has that kind of power on your emotions! And what a beautiful way to impact people with positive vibes. Keep these awesome videos coming! If you're ever in Nashville TN hit me up let's jam!
Hi Amar, absolutely phenomenal video. I can't express how much I enjoy watching these Anatomy of a Jam videos, or how much they help improve my understanding of music theory. Thank you!
I remember this show so well
I was on page side..and totally mesmerized by trey during this jam...especially when he hit the pitch bender. He was lost in the arena...truly memorable...
Awesome creation Amar! I really liked your summation thoughts! Great stuff! Keep up the good work! Thanks for the book tip too!
Just like the Tweezer, this video is a masterpiece. I'm so impressed by your work. Many thanks.
Thanks brother! This and the Went Gin are fantastic!. Keep up the good work!
Wow. Just wow. This is a masterclass! Thank you, Amar!!!!
Thanks man. Been watching you since around Christmas, and you're easily my favorite content on youtube
That means a lot to me, thank you so much!
@@amarguitar please sir do 7/14/2019 Alpine Valley Ruby Waves.
amazing
These breakdowns are the coolest thing I’ve seen in a long time. It’s everything I’ve always wanted to know. Im really hoping the Denver 97 ghost is on your list.
+1 on the Denver Ghost... not sure if its overall anatomy would be as interesting but the peak is the peak of all peaks and should be talked about as much as possible
Yes. Of Course. Please this.
Wow, hell of a job from a phan perspective and a musical approach. This must have taken you weeks and it was worth every moment. Thank you!
Just when I thought I could not love and appreciate Phish any more...! Wow!!!
A college bud and I saw Phish this past week in Huntsville. I live in Nashville, he lives in KY. On our trip home, he was asking me how music works, how chords are constructed, what are scales, etc. I *think* I did an OK job of it for the amount of time that he could take it in, but this vid is that much better since it takes an actual song, discusses what a form is, how the chords are constructed, etc. and takes the flow and organization from there. Excellent. Liked, commented and subscribed.
Bravo. Thanks
F'ing amazing. Thank you for this. I was standing with my back against the soundboard, smack in the middle of the set-up for this jam, SAMENESS QUELLING FOAM poster clutched in my hand. People around me had tears in their eyes. Magical. I will never forget this night. Thank you so much for the analysis.
would love a breakdown of anything from the SPAC 2004 run... drowned, twist, asihtos, piper, waves, 7below
This was truly amazing. Mostly because I was at most of the shows in this video. This is where I would normally list a ton a Phish songs and dates for you to do. But this was so good I think you know what your doing so it's not my place to tell you what to do. Please keep these coming!
Wow! Love this so much! It would be awesome if you’d dissect the lawn boy from 7/25/17. Pretty please 🙏🏼
'Hadron Collider' what a great name for that!
20 years 🤘🏼
I love this video. Watch it at least once a month. thanks amar
This is amazing. Well done. The content and the editing are equally brilliant. Would love to see you breakdown the Tahoe Tweezer if you ever do another Tweezer. Cheers-
This video is seriously amazing, along with all the rest of yours! It's a crime that you don't have 50K subs. Sharing to all my guitar phriends. Would love to see one on Harry Hood 12.31.93 or 10/21/95 (or your favorite Hood!).
dude your videos are amazing! keep it up!
Just discovered your channel... Where have you been all my life?!! Keep it up!
Me and my Phiends do a Phish Tribute. The Squirming Coils. Great thing you did here with the analyzing what they are doing. We have been playing Phish for years and still remain in San Diego. But your right in everything you say in the video. I notice that when we have a good crowd of people and we catch that groove in the jams the audience goes nuts. We somehow naturally developed this because we have been playing music all our lives. The most important thing is what you say in a great jam. It's the communicating between the members. Without that the ship sinks. I really enjoy this video. It hits home with me. Thank you
Can't believe you drop this right after the Went Gin. Sincerely. Thank you.
This is some top notch stuff my phriend! just finished your tutorials for the Went Gin, Albany YEM, and Mayer's take on Brown Eyed. Not only are these super fun to play, but, for a beginner/intermediate guitar player like me, they're really helpful resources when i'm trying to learn my other favorite jams by ear
My favorite channel on the Tube, thanks for everything you do Amar! Would love to jam if you ever make your way to Beantown
Great job. Your descriptions of how and why the instrumentation create great moments are clear and well thought. It's interesting for me to hear as an older fan because I'm not as interested in this era of the band's playing style. This breakdown helped me appreciate it more.
