Liposuction for a Double Chin: 5 Cases with Before & After Photos

  • A lot of people deal with submental fat or a double chin. Weight gain, genetics, and the natural loss of skin elasticity that comes with age can all play a role. There are lots of available treatments to treat or remove double chins, including newer treatments like CoolSculpting or Kybella, but laser liposuction is still a proven way to remove a double chin, and provides increased collagen production to help tighten the skin around the submental area.
    In this video we’ll look at five different chin liposuction before and after photos as well as walk through the process for chin and neck liposuction so you can get a better understanding of the procedure. Personally I believe that there’s really no reason to do chin liposuction under general anesthesia as local anesthetic can satisfactorily numb the area.
    What’s really advantageous about doing the chin and neck area is how much more defined it makes the whole face. Fat deposits in the submental area can really give a puffy appearance that distracts from the natural jawline; liposuction can address these by removing fat in the neck and jawline. Aging can cause use to lose elasticity in our skin, especially around the neck, but laser liposuction like SmartLipo stimulates collagen production and can help tighten up skin in the area - it’s one of the reasons liposuction might still be preferred over something like CoolSculpting for this particular area.
    When I do chin and neck liposuction, I not only get the fat underneath the chin but also suction along the jawline. I find this greatly improves the aesthetic appearance of the face and gives great results, especially for patients that might have a minimal amount of submental fat but are unhappy with their neck and chin definition.
    Some patients, especially older patients, will have more skin laxity in this area. Just because you have loose skin doesn’t mean you can’t get liposuction, but you should be aware that skin laxity may affect your overall results. If loose skin is your biggest concern (rather than fat in the area) then ultimately what you’re looking at is potentially getting a face lift. But take a look at the before and after examples in this video first to see what kind of reduction you can expect to achieve with laser liposuction alone.

    Can you speak more about the laser skin tightening? Some surgeons think it doesn’t work much and don’t do it. I’d prefer they do it for longer lasting results.

    • @johnbergeronmd
      @johnbergeronmd  Před 3 lety +6

      Hi Tea! Great question. Laser liposuction like SmartLipo involves treating the skin using a laser, which promotes the formation of collagen. When fat is removed from liposuction (or from weight loss) you are often going to have some loose skin in the area (you now have less fat, but the same amount of skin). Laser skin tightening is one treatment that can address this, but there are others. The important thing is that we need to consider skin laxity when performing a liposuction procedure, especially on the chin.

    Great video - what about someone who is lean (less than 12% BF) with a double chin? This would be genetic, correct? Also - does adiposity regenerate in the area post-op over the course of let's say....12 months?

    • @johnbergeronmd
      @johnbergeronmd  Před 3 lety

      Hi J S. As with the last example in the video, it is possible to achieve a much more pronounced jawline even with a small amount of fat reduction in the area. I can't speak to any particular cases or their causes without an in-person examination, a double chin could be a result of a number of factors including skin laxity. I'd recommend coming in to the office so we can take a look if you're interested. In regards to your last question, fat cells removed through liposuction are removed permanently, they will not return, but you do have to maintain your post-op weight if you want to maintain the results. Give the office a call if you'd like to know more or come in for a free consultation 713-777-5476.

    What are your thoughts on Lipo on the neck used in conjunction with facetight ? I think that’s what it is called supposed to tighten the neck skin from within

    • @johnbergeronmd
      @johnbergeronmd  Před 3 lety +3

      There are a lot of skin-tightening tools on the market. Both FaceTite and SmartLipo heat the skin from within to promote collagen formation. SmartLipo uses a laser, FaceTite uses radio frequency. I see good results from SmartLipo, but different surgeons will have different opinions.

      @johnbergeronmd  Před 3 lety

      Simply having wisdom teeth coming in generally is not an issue, but always check with your surgeon. Wisdom teeth extraction is another matter. You don't want to be scheduling back-to-back surgeries, both procedures require healing time and post-op care that can last for a couple of weeks.

      It typically takes about two weeks to get back to your daily routine. Recovery during that time involves wearing a compression garment and avoiding high-impact exercise. Many patients see immediate results from lipo, but it will differ from person to person. Like any surgery there will be some swelling and a healing process - final results can usually be seen at around 3 months, though for some patients it can take longer. It will depend on the individual case, and we can't make any sort of recommendation without a proper exam. Is there any skin removal Involved in chin lipo suction.?

    • @johnbergeronmd
      @johnbergeronmd  Před 3 lety +1

      No, liposuction alone doesn't involve skin removal. Chin liposuction often (but not always) involves skin-tightening treatments (such as laser or RF) to tighten up the submental area. Other procedures like a face lift (which does involve skin removal) can sometimes be used in combination with liposuction. As always, you'll need a consultation with a surgeon to know what's the best course of action for your particular case.

Once removed those cells do not grow back. Read more on our website: www.houstonliposuction.com/blog/does-liposuction-permanently-remove-fat/
