- Nemo the Mormon is a current Mormon who is fighting to expose financial and sexual horrors in the church. Unlike many defectors I speak to, Nemo still considers himself a part of the religion, and is a rare (or so I thought) example of a British Mormon. This is something that happens at the extreme end of most tight-knit communities, and the Mormon version is also exposed by South Park and LadBible's No Filter video of McKay 'Spartacus' Johnson, who grew up in a Mormon family.

Hey Nemo. I didn't catch the live until the end, sorry. I'm rewatching from the beginning.
I wanted to tell you that "change" within something like Mormonism is like trying to move a huge ship! Very very slow.
I remained involved in a group trying to be the change.
As far a Mormonism I remember studying it and I felt like the added scripture completely conflicted with the Bible. It seemed to be about good works. But this is separate from everything in this vid.

I marched in Utah for the change for the children interviews. My dad had the nerve to try to brag that the church has changed that, while he never thought to protect me from it as a kid
That's the lie they tell knowing very well of the truth. They are more about pleasing their doctrine than pleasing Jesus Christ and that's why they are always assuring themselves that the church is true.
Thanks for a great interview/talk! I was a mormon in Sweden from age 21-27, basically married into it, in a very strict family. While I was in it I said it is NOT a cult, but it totally is.
Cajsa, yes, it is a cult. I know, I lived in it from birth, and left at 30, after life numbing trauma. I'm 81 now and glad I escaped.

Being married or having an active sex life has NOTHING TO DO WITH SEXUAL ABUSE OF CHILDREN. The abusers WILL abuse children regardless.
As a young adolescent , I attended Mormon functions with a friend & her family . A "missionary /elder" behaved very overly friendly . Young, tall, strikingly handsome he behaved like all my likes were the best thing since sliced bread . As an adult I know he was love bombing & grooming . He got me alone & got my number. (Pre cell phone) . He called my home , Mom & older brother smelt a rat . I had no idea why they were unkind to such a friendly guy. He'd asked me to meet him , thank God I spilled the beans & the kibosh was put on that too. Then, not but a few months later a young girl my age , dear to my Mormon friend, was hauled into an Inquisition for being pregnant by that louse. IDK what they call it, I say Inquisition. My friend was heartbroken & grieved by how this girl was blamed & treated . She saw how I too was duped & as they say there but by the grace of God , right ? We were kids , that guy was to blame, yet she bore the brunt. That girl was not allowed to attend anything for a long time, kept from her friends & treated as wanton homewrecker , a witch & a degenerate. They made her give the baby to couple far away . She was never allowed to be in her age classes with church , because she was no longer a kid -WTF . She was too young to be in adult classes too . Though soon they forced her into adult womens group. So not until she was years passed this, was she ever in sync with her peers . She was never supposed to talk about her child , even when she got married later . It was bizarre .Think what this did to her . Mind you , this girl at the time, was reeling with heartbreak , as he'd convinced her she was the sun & moon to him . She was tricked, abandoned , left holding the babe & the bag as it were . She was then double & triple abandoned , victimized & demonized by " her own" . I look back & I shudder. And I can't help but think , how cell phones are a groomers Boone these days.

Hello Andrew Gold. No, I am unsurprised (but still always horrified) to hear of such abuse. Will soon be 81 years old, and very little surprises me. But am almost permanently sad about what I see, learn, know and hear. Proud of you, because you feel like family; we are Jewish and you resemble my male cousins and friends when all of us were young. You’ve endured the Cold War, other military operations/wars, the entire 60s, moon landing, the advent of tv- then color tv-then 24 hour cable. The energy crisis,the advent of the internet, and terrorist attacks. You must be extremely interesting to know.

Born in December, 1942. I felt like you were talking to me personally, since I'm the same age as the person you were commenting to. Thank you for what you said. You cheered me up a bit. I found this site while scrolling through CZcams sites that interested me. I was born and raised Mormon, and left the church at age 30, because I felt there was something terribly harmful with the church. And there certainly is. The trauma of going through the Mormon temple on my wedding day in 1963 was enough to traumatize me for the rest of my life. I also was horrified about polygamy and prejudice against Blacks by the church. After studying church history and having hurtful and harmful personal experiences, I had to walk away from it. Actually started attending a Mormon church for a very short period of time until one day, one of the other women that was attending showed up at my house with a couple of very large grocery bags full of clothing. The lady said that the way I dressed was inappropriate, and she gave me these two bags of clothing, which I probably dumped out and was horrified and humiliated. Needless to say I didn’t go back.
Their hypocrisy is what kills me though.
You dodged a big bullet when you stopped going to the Mormon church. Don't allow them to stalk you or convince you to come back. Greetings from an 82 year old grandmother in beautiful Montana.

Children of any denomination are precious, not just mine as an EX JW, but all including Mormon. When it comes to Children
I only see they need to be protected from abuse. I no longer see affiliations.
To protect children is a feat today, with the powers that be that are medicating and killing them. We certainly need more people to speak up, give testamonials like Nemo to air publicly the pedophilia going on in rich circles. The law doesn't get beyond money, but they will not get beyond truth spoken out loud, with no fear.

They blame it on women wearing certain clothes like the Muslims do but what kind of character and control does that show the men have? Sexual sin seems to be one of the hardest to overcome.

I'm not religious at all but I understand how important people's faith is to them. It's fascinating to hear Nemo talk about his faith and challenge it a the same time, I think he's doing a great thing to bring about change without having to leave his community. I hope it goes well for him.

Hi Andrew! I grew up in a Mormon family in California and we are normal and friendly and love our Beach parties! However when I moved to Utah in 1992 I was shocked to see a completely different religion! People were cruel to me because I am a musician with tattoos and I think my hair was purple. I called my father crying and saying "they are not christ-like here!" My dad told me that I was basically stuck in a time warp and that Utah was about thirty years behind everyone else. I left the church for a while, and then about 12 years ago I found a cool group of Mormons in Salt Lake City that were very accepting and could care less if I had tattoos! My dad always taught me spirituality was a very personal thing and you didn't need organized religion to be spiritual. I agree with that 100% And that's pretty much me! Great interview! sadly, the further away from utah you get, the more freedom you have. people want to blame the culture, not the doctrine, but the worst behavior comes from those who pride themselves on following the doctrine, and they're right.
I completely agree with you, but in reverse. When I visited Utah as a teen, I was a strict TBM teenager. I was teased by all of the casual, hypocritical Utah Mormons. I love CaliMos like you, but Umos and Imos are so close minded, awful, petty and …. brainwashed.
I was bored one day in church and just needed to say something to break the monotony. They were talking about genealogy, and I jokingly said that I have no work to do since my mom did the work all the way back to Adam. My grandpa’s name is Adam. But the young women gasped in admiration, not thinking “is she joking? Is she lying? Is that even possible?” So of course they didn’t laugh when I said my grandpa’s name was Adam. 🥹 Brainwashed, no critical thinking skills, inflexible social skills. Like Stepford people.
@@exmohobobonobo my father used to say come outside of the bubble where the church is actually true lol. He was raised in Utah and ran as soon as he could and he's been a lifelong member, bishop, high councilor, but as he said to me once with his personal faith, "The gospel is true to those who genuinely seek it, and people are not" H always loved the culture outside of Utah. Me personally my experiences growing up in an actively LDS family never had experiences like the horror stories and though I left when I came out of the closet as bi my parents never disowned me. I never said anything against the church and I correct misinformation about. I don't hate the religion, my problem was I couldn't be who I was at the time and be in it. I've had spiritual experiences in and out of the church. My biggest problem is honestly the puritanical mindset of many of the people who never read the doctrine or actually understood it then acted all pious.
They can be mean...I knew Christians that grew up there...they really went through it..

I was LDS and served a mission. Since they mentioned it, there were a lot of gay guys in the MTC. Not that they seemed gay but were actually having sex with other guys. During my mission I became aware of it happening between other companions.
Andrew, thank you for having Nemo on to discuss mormonism in the UK. I am very familiar with the LDS church here in the States and the fundamentalist groups of mormons, but I didn’t know about mormonism in other countries. So thank you again for having Nemo on to enlighten us.

When my sister and her husband were in the Mormon church, I wasn’t even allowed to see them get married or see her in her wedding dress because I wasn’t Mormon. The the Mormon church spies on its members and stage interventions. So glad the got out of Mormonism when the decided to have children.
I am sorry to hear about your experience. Truly. You seemed to have had a very negative experience, which is truly sad. I am a Mormon and maybe that some people that you know were spying on some other members and these spies just happened to be members but I can tell that that is not what members from the LDS church do. I have moved all over the place in North America and I can tell you that there was never any spies in whatever congregation I belonged to. I am not suggesting that that situation didn’t happened to you or to some people that you personally, but what I am saying that this spying issue was specifically to those people but this is definitely not something that the church does.
And the reason why you were not allowed to witness the marriage is because only members can enter in the temples, but that’s a whole other discussion.
In Utah, clergy are the only adults who are not mandated reporters. When CSA is disclosed Mormon bishops are instructed to call a church run hotline which is staffed by attorneys who offer guidance on how to ensure there is no church liability. In court cases church officials have submitted statements in support of perpetrators.
True story. As a then Baptist, the father of a friend of mine passed. We lived in a predominantly Mormon neighborhood and she was (using my term) pounced on and her Catholic upbringing was attacked. As one who made it clear where I stood with my faith, she called. The Mormons were sending "elders" by to talk to her and she asked if I could be there. Incidentally, I had done some research into different religions. The day came and the two very young "elders" sat across from us in her family room. They began by teaching their doctrine/theology as help for her grief.
I inquired if I could ask some questions. Of course, they replied. The following conversation ensued. E=elders.
Me: What do you consider your source of authority?
E: The bible.
Me: Amazing! So do I. Have you ever read it?
E: (They was uncomfortable for them. After some discussion, they admitted they had not read it in its entirety.)
Me: Well, I have read the Book of Mormon and it doesn't exactly line up with the bible.
There followed a discussion about whether they believed they could become gods. Their answers were ambivalent. I finally asked if they believed they could become exalted beings and they said yes.
Me: So like gods?
E: Yes.
Me: I will have you know that doctrine comes straight from the bible.
E: They seemed a little smug and leaned arrogantly back in their chairs as if to say, "well, there you go."
Me: I will read it to you. Genesis 3:4,5 - "The serpent said to the woman, “You certainly will not die! For God knows that on the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will become like God, knowing good and evil." This doctrine did not from Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, the Book of Mormon, Pearl of Great Price or Doctrine and Covenants, it came straight from the pit of hell.
Needless to say, the conversation ended. A few days later, she called to say the "elders" wanted to come back and talk to her but that they didn't want her friend there.
BTW - I did not leave God - just the Baptists.
Try telling the truth. Your story is full of holes, but then you know that pretender.

I think of it as a positive challenge, but how do you feel about it?
In my eyes you’re courageous. I haven’t been in a similar position to yours, but I’ve always been pro bettering things on my workplace and even though that’s (I believe) a less complicated situation, it’s still a lot of work! Makes me think about the story of King David in the Bible who by the way was a man after God’s own heart, he sent for Bathsheba who he saw and lusted after. He sent her husband to the worst part of the battle so he would get killed, which he did, then he married Bathsheba. He had quite a few wives and concubines which was prohibited in Mosaic law. Same with Solomon, his son who had 100’s of wives and concubines. Geez

I follow Nemo on Utube. His knowledge of Mormon history is astonishing. I'm friends with an ex-Mormon couple who left the church in 2019. They watched a video which explained the truth about Joseph Smith.
They both say they have never been happier.

I want to see what we as exmo or nuanced Mormons can do to help prevent the type of systematic violence she and others from using India or other paternal societies experience.

The church is honest. But the lawyers were the ones involved in that. You would be amazed at how large it's holdings are. But it also takes a lot of people to run it. And so yes things do get messed up . The church is perfect, but the people are not. And this happens every where and in every church.
That last sentence is the very truth. Every church has problems! And everywhere outside of church has problems, too. It's tough to think about
The church manipulates children and vulnerable communities to steal from them. Full stop. I was one of those children. I was lied to. By the church, the doctrine, my leaders, my parents, the people in general conference. If an entity is taking advantage of people and hurting people, listen to them instead of the entity.
the church is as honest as a snake oil salesman. the "prophet" and his counselors have lied, as have those in the past.

As someone who was Catholic when the scandal came out about the priests it was mostly well it’s not OUR priests that are doing that. However, there was training that religious peeps had to go through because of it.
If he was in the USA he would have been excommunicated when he first voiced his thoughts aloud.

Growing up Mormon, my household experienc was highly controlled. No TV, No music, No chocolate, No caffeine, No swaring, No failure. My third father was not a member. Mom ruled the roost. I understood Mormon life, once I moved to Utah. I highly recommend for the curious. I was proposed to by a FLDS member. Utha is an eye opener. Once I experonced group violation, I went to the Priesthood, and nothing at all was done to support me, or provide any support. I have had a lifetime of healing from the Church. I have half my family being in Mormonism, My mom is a Survivalist Type. She had bodybags in her supplies at one time.

So they hoard, as they feel we are in the Latter Days. That prior to Christ coming, there will be total anarchy. Mom had a tent for 20 ppl. Cots, stove, clothing, food, tools, to also include body bags so we can burry the dead. Those are really just a few of her hoards.
I hope that makes sense. Oh, and she also had weapons and took, courses to use them, and self defence classes.

I was the "Actually " adult in college and an introvert too . Not shy about my beliefs and Passions in writing and only in front of people I trust or when I've hit my limits on patience but I do also recharge my battery with quiet and some short periods of solitude

In the church it is all about the money! If there is a scandals, they will protect the person that is causing the scandal. The victim is NOT protected, (ie: sex abuse)
If Utah gets a hold of him he will be gone. There is more and more backlash recently with so many murder cases being related to the LDS church. Non LDS people are learning what it is to be LDS and the different Mormon sects because LDS is just the main one.

I grew up Utah mormon, still live here and I laughed when he said only the most strict rules , those are the normal and expected here plus a few others, no water ( pools lakes etc) on Sundays and a few others.
I appreciate interviews with Mormons who actually know the culture and doctrine. A lot of times they spread false info. There’s enough real problems in the church, we don’t need to muddy the waters with rumors. Also it’s baffling that background checks still aren’t done. Nemo Gave me a different perspective on trying to make a difference from the inside. I haven’t been to church in years because I hate the culture. It’s very keeping up with the Jones’s, very fake, every one is on anti depressants and abusing prescription pills.
I wonder if he could look into the upper echelon and the third anointing where basically once you’ve reached that level you are guaranteed the celestial kingdom and can do whatever without repercussions. I found that out at 28 and it was my last straw. Living in slc we know prophets and their families and I have heard many stories about the hypocrisy of the elders
I agree with a lot of what Dougie says. I’m a lifelong Mormon who dealt with these issues from within the church for many years and was criticised for it. I left the church some years ago.
I’ve never known Mormons to not eat chocolate, however.
If you ever interview him again, please can you ask how his family (particularly parents) feel about his questioning the church and what he is doing with his podcast, and what would happen to his family relationships if he were excommunicated (i.e. would he be shunned the way it is in Scientology and other sects). I wonder how much his family ties may impact on his decision to stay in.

I find myself in a similar position as Nemo, except that I am not at all vocal about it and my circumstances have mostly just begun to unfold... I grew up in the LDS faith, went on a mission, got married in the temple, the whole gambit. Back when my husband and I were dating, he began to have a faith crisis. He shared his journey with me, but it was much different from my own. I suppose I had always seen the Church as a culture, community, and heritage... and also a faith. I had never seen much of a problem with disagreeing with leaders if they said something I wasn't on board with. My husband's relationship with the Church, however, was entirely wrapped up in the religion, so when his "shelf broke", he couldn't see any value in it at all and has now left. I, on the other hand... Well, I'd been disagreeing with religious teachings and leaders for years, so none of this was new or earth shattering for me. I didn't "put it on my shelf" so much as respectfully decline to have it in my house - I can disagree with some teachings and have issues with some history and that's that. Still, there are many things about the religion that I respect and enjoy and hold dear. And there are other things that make me cringe and want to apologize. Still other things I think are just fine even though people ridicule or condemn the Church not for being wrong, but for being different. My husband is out now because he experiences it primarily as a religion. I am still in because I experience it primarily as my culture (the good parts, anyway -and there are many good parts. It's far from perfect, but let's not throw the baby out with the bath water). This has all happened very recently - we've only been married a year. So now I find myself at a crossroads where I'm really not sure what to do religiously, because although I share many opinions with my husband, I do not want to leave my culture behind.

I have never heard of a practicing member of a faith working as an advocate for change within it. Don't most people cherry pick the parts of their religion that suit their needs and leave what doesn't resonate with them?
This is a new one on me. I think what he is doing is great. He is very fortunate to be in a receptive climate and to have the opportunity to be listened to without being excommunicated.

He's very brave. If this had happened pre-social media, they would have excommunicated him right away. Am very sure they will and want to but are worried about the attention it will bring. He's however sitting on a time bomb though, they are cringing their fist and can't wait to execute his dismissal.
One of the reasons I left the church was their refusal to accept people who have homosexual relationships, they said as long as you don’t engage in it you can attend church. I just couldn’t reconcile that and yet you can attend if at home you’re an abusive heterosexual person

Polygamy should remain illegal. However, the women should be protected financially by the polygamous husband's assets and her maternal privileges supported over those of the father who is stretched too far for the well-being of the children. Those protections should become enshrined in law. That way women and children are protected and the man's position is not protected as it should not be because he's breaking the law. IMO.
