5 Mishandled SA Cases the Mormon Church Doesn’t Want You to Know About

  • Daily Mail article written by Miles Dilworth, exposes 5 cases of SA that were grossly mishandled by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In doing so, it clearly presents a pattern that illustrates the LDS church cares more about its reputation and its image than it does its members' safety and wellbeing.
We will discuss what the article presents about each case and our thoughts as it pertains to cults and mind control manipulation.

I think the overarching problem is two-fold. First, there is the persistent fear that church discipline will expose the lie that leaders don’t possess a special gift of discernment. Second, the church’s biggest priority is protecting itself from bad publicity.

They’ve adopted a similar method to the catholic church of receiving and managing complaints, & deterring victims from going to the police. Its purpose is to limit the churches liability. but in the process actually significantly increases the churches liability, as they knowingly expose others to SA offenders.

When my ex became bishop, I was talking to one of the wives of one of his counselors, whom I considered a friend, and she made a remark that really rubbed me the wrong way. She said, "I'm so glad that [my husband] will never be called as bishop." I asked, "Why do you think he'll never get called?" Her reply, "Because as a police officer, he's a mandatory reporter." I just remember thinking to myself, 'And that's a bad thing because...?'

Here in Arizona, it has been known for years about the silent incestuous behavior within some Mormon families. The females and wives in the family kept silent due to the dominance of the Priesthood Holder/Fathers they felt they had to protect. So sick within a so-called righteous and holy religion.

This is disgusting but it's not a surprise. I grew up in Boise, Idaho which is very Mormon. I was actually born Mormon, baptized, and then luckily my mom woke up. I was then raised Quaker but that's a whole other story... lol. (It was fine, very progressive church and no issues.)
Because Boise is so filled with Mormons, a lot of my friends were Mormon and I knew even from a young age that something was very wrong with this picture. (I grew up in the '70s and '80s... I'm really old.)
Fathers that were a little too possessive, daughters that were obviously being abused but we didn't talk about things like that back then.

My mum became a Jehovah's Witness when I was fifteen. There are a few cultish aspects to their organisation but they seem, in the main, to be really nice people. I was somewhat chagrined to lose Christmas and birthdays aged just fifteen but I was too old to have to be required to join with my mum. She didn't even bother asking if it interested me at fifteen. She knew I'd inevitably believe that it was all palpable nonsense. I did look at the Jehovah's Witnesses literature when I was a bit lost and at a low ebb in my mid-twenties but it read as very hokey and more than a little daft. Lions eat grass in the "New System" where nothing unpleasant ever happens like carnivores eating other animals. I pondered how far that idea went with crocodiles et cetera and I decided it was all too silly. Regardless of how rudderless and completely lacking in any appreciable sense of direction, I felt around that time. The JWs are good at finding depressed, lower-working-class housewives like my mum. You'll find them on council estates all over the British Isles. My mum is an intelligent person and she still fell for that stuff. But poor people need something to cling to. They always have. And therein lies the secret.

If a Bishop or the man above the Bishop take a childs virginity, is it difficult for that girl to marry? Does the man who violated her admit to making her "impure"? @aprilbennett540. Girls in the mormon church are taught that even thinking anything sexual let along having had any sexual experiences that we were like a licked cupcake (worthless) and that no one would want us. We were also taught that it was our responsibility to not have men think about us or covet us. We were also taught that any sexual acts before marraige were akin to murder. It was always the girls that need to repent from being SAd it was never the person committing the SA. They protect abusers.

When you can’t say the r word, not just on the web, but especially in public, you know there is a problem larger than triggers. SNL did a skit w/Kate McKinnon where her character told of a time in the 50s when they had a code word for SA. She went on to share that code word, which turned out to be the actual R word itself, insinuating nothing was done about it regardless of what one called it. It’s been mishandled, if handled at all, for decades. Exposure and Awareness is everything. Thanks for bringing these tough things to light. Allowing and Perpetuating it while teaching from the pulpits that one should protect their “virtue” with their life, if necessary, is nothing short of monstrous. I neglected mentioning punching a gay, or wishes of having a missionary return in a box rather than coming home without their virtue, since that sentence already has too many things wrong with it. Blame reversal, misuse of the word “virtue”, lack of accountability, victim shaming, miseducation, lying, etc. I hope those claiming discernment wake up and take stewardship and accountability seriously. Bizarre use of tax free revenue imho. Thanks y’all for doing the hard work for change.

This is so reminiscent of the last church (that I later realized was a cult) I was part of. I live in a mandatory reporting state, and I'm also a mental health counselor and am required by license to report. I discovered a situation with an infant while working in the nursery and informed the children's pastor that I would need to report it (as a courtesy), and I was essentially threatened not to. They wanted to "handle it internally." They were literally trying to force me to compromise my license and my integrity. I knew then that something about that place was off but was so entrenched I stayed another 4 years until COVID gave me a way out.

More pressure needs to be put on the church for education for the men!! Yes, they need to be held accountable for reporting any abuse they may be aware of. More than fines, but serious jail time for church elders who are sitting on information for whatever reason. Also in that, the church itself should be held criminally accountable if their members commit SA! This will motive them to educate the men and monitor them closely more than anything else! More needs done to provide safe ways for all people to report abuse.

      She doesn't have any option.
She is being kept pregnant as she has been brainwashed into popping babies like a rabbit ... 🐇🐰
And they take a lot of money & effort to feed ...
She's just too tired to care.

Im not Mormon nor Catholic but im repulsed by the stories of the SA from leaders of these churches. I know it happens from many other places but its appalling that it occurs within churches. And/or is covered up by them.

All churches desire to hide behind the curtain. Fortunately God sees all.
SA has been going on for years and when reported, no matter the denomination, it gets pushed under the rug. It is one reason I have stopped going to church. The hypocrisy is intense, so just easier to stay home and worship, albeit I know God desires that we all worship together, unified and pure.

Excommunicating members, especially publically adds to people's negative views of the Church.
Mainstream Christian denomations rarely excommunicate. I am not aware of one in my 60 years of my Catholic upbringing and association with many Catholics. CC doesnt track a followers' life. One's faith is personal.
Shunning is not a concept in the CC. Seriously, I didn't know shunning had a specific name. Of course, I knew individuals were capable.

I hate to be this type of person but screw. What the lawyer's in the church says? What kind of person bishop reverend anyone who takes confession from other People sit by and hear someone say oh i've been S a ing my children And wrestles with the knowledge of knowing that and not saying something to authorities, regardless if they're required by law or not. Like maybe it's because I'm a mom. Maybe it's because I endured. That type of abuse from a so-called family member when I was a child. But if I was in that type of position in which I heard people's confession. And they were like. Oh I did this well as soon as i left church. That day. Be oh, I'm calling the proper authorities. Because I'm a person and I have a conscience. It's be d***** what the church thinks or whether they're gonna kick me out or not. What about the about vitcums safety? Maybe because I didn't grow up in a high controlled reli. Don't have that aspect or that fear. But someone has always told me. There is a difference between a religious person. And a spiritual person, a religious person will do what they are told by their religion. A spiritual person will do what is right.
    Just sayin

Interesting. I grew up in the LDS church. In Utah. Absolutely there are confessionals, but they are called bishop’s interviews or worthiness interviews.

    • @theundone777

We know there aren't confessions. However the church used the confessional argument (in reference to Bishop interviews) assert that they did not have to report sexual predators to law enforcement. They brought it all the way to the Arizona Supreme Court and won.

Victims, and those brave enough are allowed to report on many different misdeeds perpetrated by their/former churches. How else can they improve their behavioural practices and start to protect those still in the church community.
You want to sweep all of this under the carpet, and stick your fingers in your ears going lalalala nothing to see here.
