Making the comparison, here in Japan, if you just need basic transport, pick up a Toyota Probox wagon at auction, assuming you have a mate with auction membership. Unless it's a diesel you won't pay more than 100,000 yen (essentially 500 pounds), plus unavoidable auction charges. The Probox (great name) is the car to put a junior salesman on the road. The street cred of a Safeway shopping trolley, but essentially basic transport assuming it has some shaken (MOT). In Japan the Shaken last for two years and includes road traffic act insurance.

Trust me, the market up here is insane for that reason, everything is overpriced, demand far outstrips supply because everything of a certain age/price point is absolute JUNK. Cars down south that don't really rust (Thinking something like a Mk2 Octavia), find one in Scotland and if it's still alive, it'll be a patchwork quilt underneath with all the MOT bodges trying to squeeze 1 more year out it each MOT time.

I agree Matt, bought a Fiesta from Glasgow 5 years ago, one previous owner and 55k miles but lived up there for its first 11 years. I didn’t expect to still have it, had my car written off and needed something quick. Was raining obviously and it was parked on a main road so kurb meant I didn’t look underneath. It’s far worse than the same car it replaced of the same year but that was Cumbrian and much higher miles. Lesson learned and won’t do it again or take something to kneel on to inspect. Sprayed it underneath with hydraulic oil on its first MOT with myself and then did more wire brushing and rust treatment in following years but suspect it’s time is limited

I have a car with a yellow Arnold Clark sticker, with some bits picked off. But you've inspired me to try again, think I'll go for a hair dryer approach.

I would not of scrapped it, it had 5 months MOT left and all the faults could have been fixed in a day on the driveway, far better to sell it on for a quick £100 profit!
I make a good living sorting cheap PX cars, anything with a new MOT flys out the door for a grand round here.

It never ceases to amaze me that people will pay umpteen thousands on a car, then put the cheapest tyres they can find on it.
It's worth repairing with the brake issues, not expensive really. Well ok it would have been lol.

Why don’t you sell your scrap cars to someone that does stock car racing 😅

Agree 100% on Arnold Clarke stickers. If they won't supply a car without one I wouldn't buy it..

Tbh those fails weren't too serious, a home DIYer could sort all that out for 200-300 quid. Is it worth doing on a Kia Rio though, that's a different question.
