I prefer this type of review to any supercar.
I totally agree!! You can identify with these sorts of reviews.. as the cars are within Joe Bloggs budget!! Supercars reviews you're just watching and thinking.. 'Nice motor.. but I'll never he able to afford one of these' 😳
This was my favorite High Peak video in quite a while! A great old car in good nick, a larger than usual dose of dry humor, and all in all, 25 minutes well spent! 👏👏
Same here....these type of videos are the best!! Lovely views of the bin too!
Great video - when most of us thought this was a dog, it is great to see this car live on and it still looks quite modern. There is nothing like a good service record to keep cars like this going and going.
I'm so glad that this car lived.
The owners did a pretty good job.
I bought a new 2002 Mondeo Estate Ghia X 2litre diesel. I ran it for 75,000 miles and gave it to my son. He ran it for a further 70,000 miles and traded it in. Other than service parts the only work needed was a new fuel pump and a new radio. A brilliant car and good value for money.
You were lucky only one - I’ve had loads of them luckily some under warranty
@@KKTR3 didn't say how long he had it. It would do 200k easy. Age is more of a problem than mileage generally.
@@chrishart8548 I’m talking about the top of the range radio in them
The last Mondeo I owned was a 2006 2.0 tdci bought for £750 in 2015. It had less than 100k on it and I thought I'd bagged a real bargain. When I drove it home I noticed a slight rattle so the next day I took it to my mechanic and found out it had a broken spring. I also discovered that the flywheel was on it's way out so straight away £1300 for a new flywheel, clutch and a front spring. About a week later it went into limp mode as I was overtaking and nearly killed me. This was something that happened almost every time I drove the car I actually kept the car for 3 years clocking up 150k but despite dozens of trips to different mechanics I never found out why it kept going into limp mode?
@@Norfolkbiker50
Same limp mode problem with my 53 plate diesel mondeo estate. And i've been told of plenty others too. I loved the car. Black with tints. But it wasn't worth spending money on to sort the problem so i scrapped it. Gutted.
Fords of that era drove really nicely. Lovely ride and handling balance. So perhaps dull to look at but not dull to drive.
I love it when owners look after their cars to the point that it has a clean MOT at 20 years. It’s a skill that not many people can achieve.
Me too. My old 2001 Citroen Picasso still passes with a clean sheet. Apart from one MOT where they advised the side repeater bulbs weren't quite orange enough.... but they looked fine to me.
This is positive proof that if a car is decent in the first place, and is then maintained properly, it will last and will pass an (advisory free) MOT 19 years later!! I’ve had 2 models of these and they’re great cars, very underrated. Great video as always Matt, thank you…👍😊
Who needs to spend £40-£50,000 on a car when this £2000 car will do exactly the same thing.
Plenty space in the back for kids and dogs and no worries about it getting dented in Asda.
Little depreciation and no EcoBoom engine to worry about.
Exactly it’s like nowadays feel peer pressure just to update there cars. It’s a shame these old beasts need more appreciation
More people are getting this now, having a flash car you can't afford is not as prevalent as it was 20 years ago
@alexanderstefanov6474 I think more cars than ever are company cars mainly for the Tax benefits.
I totally agree... Buy a cheaper older car and hopefully have it for years.. Then scrap it or sell it on for another one.
I have.. No depreciation
@@1000gregory4 I did that for years got through so many cars though about 17 Last car I bought was just over 2 years old it will be 13 years old in November. The one before was 6 months old lasted 16 years one before that was 3 years old when I got it had it from 2005 to 2014. A friend had it for another 2 years but blew the engine up somehow. They key really is just hold onto the car until dies.
I had about ten of these as company cars as Area Manager for Ford Greece.
It’s a fabulous car, looks great, it’s quick, handles brilliantly, spacious, reliable, I’ve done over 200k miles in Mondeo’s, one of the ten was exactly this car, same colour but a Ghia.
Matt, gold happens to be an all time classic Ford colour. In the late 70’s, early 80’s Fiesta, Capri, Granada Ghia’s, the launch colour was always gold.
just a shame ford just sucks ive owned 3 fords of which 1 brand new from the lot with only 21km on the dash
and it was trash it was a 2022 focus and i hated it it drove boring wasnt comfy
and the other fords were at the garage almost monthly
so i went back to VW group and i have no issues
i bought a 2020 vw troc 2.0 tsi with dsg and its awesome its got 240hp (it has a stage one) and its comfy looks good seats are comfy and its just way better
id drive ford if they were good and reliable
My dad still drive one of these.
Mondeo 2.0 Ltr with manual transmission.
Back then he bought it brand new.

I really like Matt and his videos but can't agree with that when he drive s a white 100k Range Rover!!!!
And a L405 doesn't then.
Looks like the it’s the Citroen van only for Matt going forwards on this channel then 😂
I had one and drove it to Spain, fully loaded - really liked the car, and it never let me down.
A taxi company in my town here in Slovenia had few of those Mondeos with 2l diesel engines. All went over 600.000 km. The definition of a workhorse.
I have a 20 Yr old mk1 ford focus, nothings ever broke. Even the air con works and feels new to drive. The ford's of this generation were fantastic Imo. Cheap to fix and built way better than expected. Great to drive too. They over engineered those mk1 focuses and Mondeos to save the brand are just very well thought out and sturdy.

The fact it had no corrosion is it's main selling point. Rot and the flashing glow plug light usually mean the end for these.
Had one of these and regretfully sold it, was a 2l TDCi Ghia 53 plate estate (and I was 21 at the time). Would love to get one in that spec again 🤩 such brilliant cars!
Completely agree. Loved my 55 plate two litre TDCI Ghia hatch 6 speed 130 in silver. Sit at motorway speeds all day sipping diesel. Nice spec, torque when needed and comfortable.
Much underrated car. Huge legroom in the back, estate car practicality, and very reliable.
I've had Mondeos since 2007. Everyone of them was a gem. Never let me down and the Titanium X trim has evrything apart from a heated steering wheel. I now have a 2012 Tit X and apart from annual services, it's not cost a penny extra.
Nice car that
I absolutely love it when you try to keep these old girls on the road 👏🏻 plenty of life in that car for someone, a totally useable, practical and fairly cheap to run motor! I wonder if we will be saying the same about any of the EV’s in 19 years time 🤔 I doubt it some how! Nice one Matt👏🏻👍🏻
Of course we will. There'll be be plenty of EVs that have been looked after by their owners just like the odd Mondeo. A good mondeo of that age is an exception, most of them are dead by that age.

Proof as if needed that if you cherish your chariot then it will reward your efforts. I’d run around in a car like that all day long! Well done, Matt. You deserved a bit of luck! 😉
I find stuff like this dangerously interesting
I had it's granddad, in 1974 not only was it gold, estate and base spec, but I was 24 years old. It was the last car I let my dad " advise" me on. It was he said great for camping you will get everything in that. I sold it after 2 years and bought a spitfire and I got all my gear in that.😂
Oh this one was a trip down memory lane. My father had a very similar one (2.0l Ghia Automatic from 2000 or 2001). He bought it new and sadly enough was too damaged after a crash in 2018. It was a great car. I remember the press at the time stating it actually drove quite well. Anyways, glad to see there is life left in this one!
I have owned my 2002 hatch since 2007. Still going strong. Spent a small fortune last year but happy I did. It suits my needs exactly. Will miss this car if I ever have to let it go. Glad to see your example lives on.
As an ageing blue oval fan boy this was just a brilliant find. Slightly before the proliferation of separate modules that controlled even basic systems, this is a vehicle that the guy under the railway arches can still repair. Just where have we gone wrong with car manufacturing nowadays?
Same here I'm 65 and had Ford's all my life, escorts mk4 cortinas, focus, fiestas,Mondeo,Kugas, transits (all eras) includes company vans which had done well over 250k and hand on heart none of them have been problematic the secret has been regular servicing
@@xlfivemy father was a garage owner and mechanic, died last year at 95. He was a Ford maniac. His courtesy car was a 1.3 ohv mk3 cortina which was so underpowered but did a genuine 300k before he scrapped it. I remember him buying it as an ex company car at 120k and after he did the suspension and servicing, I drove it and thought how tight it felt but very underpowered. A testament to well maintained Old Ford’s of the day. All had lovely gearboxes
@@volt8684 Yes all the Fords had good gearboxes, even back to the Anglia days.
My local mechanic under the arches was known to everyone as "Staf" and he was the spitting image of Leland Palmer (father of Laura from Twin Peaks if you remember that). "Whoever sold you that car wants putting against the wall and shooting" was one thing he told me. He rang me at work once and his chilling words were "Are you sitting down?".
The econazis are killing the car industry 😥
The PT Cruiser revelation and the Papyrus paint colour comment were both brilliant😂
Good solid car. I do like estates. Can't go wrong at that price. Why would you spend 30k on some electric thing?
My late father had a Mondeo as a company car and when my Sister was learning to drive she would practice in it going around a supermarket car park. It was a green one.
I saw a gold 2005 Astra Estate this morning and thought exactly the same thing, “Who buys a gold car?”, my answer was it was probably the fashion, like buying a rose gold phone a few years ago.
I find it's usually your Uncle who likes fishing and irish music speaking from experience because he had one.
does silver really look any better though?
I've worked in the motor industry many years. Shades of gold have always been a popular colour on executive models, going right back to the earliest metallic paints.

I had one in silver, drove it as a taxi for 8 years, it broke down once (cam shaft sensor, 5 minute fix). Loved that car, so reliable and huge amount of space in the back, it was like having a van. Plus they came with a 7 year warranty.

The greatest thing about an old motor with Radio2 is listening to Terry Wogan.
One of the best company cars I had as a service engineer. 57 plate 1.8 diesel engine, never broke down, very comfortable to drive and nice big fuel tank. Very quick off the mark as well. Great video to watch, brings back the memories of driving the Mondeo.
Honest vehicles are great, the Belingo and the Mondeo are just good honest cars, this week end I got to drive a friends old convertible Karmann Ghia Convertible, it was slow and loud, you were sitting on the ground 55 mph felt like 120, you felt and heard everything in the road and in the air, no Lamborghini driver has ever had a bigger smile on their face, it was wonderful and took you back to a time when you knew you were in a mechanical conveyance. Had a friend that had a US Modeo and vacationed in Scotland, rented a Mondeo and said it was much better. It was a manual transmission I think he said it was a diesel and had tons of pulling power, much better feed back from the steering wheel and better brakes than the US version. My dream is drive a MGB or a TR6, probably never happen, but there was a time I’d have sold my soul for one!
That’s for your life story - looking forward to volume 2 .
The US never got the Mondeo 🤔in the 90s they had what was known as the Contour which was technically a Mondeo underneath but they changed so much for the US market that it can't even be compared. And later in the 2010s they had the Fusion which was again a Mondeo but not called such and with modifications and larger engines for the US market. But they never had the proper Mondeo

Ok back to video.
I know many people turn their noses up at the Mondeo but after fifty years of driving various cars I can honestly say that my Mondeo has been the most reliable I've had. Straight through the MOT for the last 8 years with only the odd tyre required.
Mondeo was 'Car of the Year' winner for most years. Great cars.
Been away for a week - saw several RR Cullinan's on the motorway - Jeeeeezuzzzz that can only exist so that someone who has had a taste and aesthetics bypass to shout - "Look at me world - look what I can waste my money on" - Its like the love child of Lady Penelope's roller and a Ssangyong Rexton

So refreshing to see a car not offloaded into the trade because it has issues. I was convinced it would be rotten underneath.
Great to watch a down to earth video about a down to earth bargain car in great condition for its age. I buy cars of this ilk but usually have to spend a fair wedge on them. Just picking up a comment you made about Chinese tyres. I used to be the same, but for the last 10 years at least I've run my cars on them and they are reasonably priced, handle well, are comfortable, give good mileage. Which I didn't find with some well known European brands.

Great cars, but just goes to show the issue with the used car market at the moment. This should be circa £750-£1000.
