As much as I love seeing 100k + BMW's reviews on Joe's channel, this video was great. Different and entertaining. And Joe's enthusiasm made it very lively. More of those please.
Much appreciated buddy!
@@JoeAchilles1 More of those, please! :))
@@JoeAchilles1did you plead guilty with your r8 video
It was a pleasure to work on the Passat & we're looking forward to the next video!
Thanks again guys, genuinely can't wait to edit the main video now 😉
I had 2 red passats estates in 1995 . I just got out of a mental hospital and was at a low ebb in my life . I got a job delivering parcels and I got my first red Passat estate and I absolutely loved it . The freedom of the countrywide driving job in a car that had so much space was absolutely brilliant 🤩 a great boost for my life at that point …. It was a big comfy car with the room of a van and the fuel consumption of a car 🚗
I used to carry a 9ft surfboard in my saloon, no problem. Not sure I could fit a bodyboard in my current Audi 😬 Good job I was a terrible surfer.
I had a2018 skoda superb 2.0 190 tdi dsg sel executive estate and I was blow away just how brilliant it was on fuel ,this car would regularly return 250 miles to a quarter tank of diesel, economy mode and keeping it around 60 mph on a long run .it was fantastic. I also have access to a 2011 volkswagan passat 1.6 tdi estate and it just eats up the miles .such a shame for all the ulez bollocks that has seen so many of the brilliant cars being sent to the scrap yard years before their time .really looking forward to seeing how this epic trip goes .
I had a Passat for the last 7 years, 2011 B7 2l TDI, did 110 thousand miles in it and only serviced it every two years, never skipped a beat. I could drive to Italy from the south of Germany and back on one tank, one of the best cars ever made. I sold it last year and i miss that car every day.
Great video. Can’t believe I’m more excited about this Passat than the new £50k one 🤔
It’s just more relatable. Anyone spending 50k on a Passat, even on finance needs their head examining
You and me both!
@@ifyouarefeelingsinisterwhy? That's the price of cars these days and just because you can't afford it doesn't mean others can't.
@@ln5747 not saying this because I can’t afford it, but because there are so many cars in this price point which I would (and have bought in the past) buy before a Passat. Why are you so defensive, did you just spaff 50 big ones on a Passat and offended others think you’re dumb
@@ifyouarefeelingsinister "I would buy..."
Please try not to apply your life and logic to others and get offended when others don't agree.
So good to see a family run business being used instead of one of the big national chains. Always feel that the service and attention you recieve is far better from a family run business then it is from a big corporation who seem to be just after ££££... Well done to Elite for being involved and hope the Passat performs well.
Makes me sad that so few cars are available with contrast interiors these days, it's all black on black on black, immensely dull. BMW are one of the few with a range of interior colours across the whole range.
Very true!
Indeed, but dealer just order black white or grey for stock so they can sell em easy. They sell because they have them in stock.
Diesels sold because of the subsidies now so many can't be driven in London, Oxford, Bath Bristol...
So happy Elite garages are featured. The hubby always takes the car there and the kids love going into the shop because the staff are so fab. Their favourite is Jane 🙌🏼
Awesome to hear, it was lovely spending a day down there 👌🏽
Hubby 🤮
I have a Passat B7 estate (13) - 2.0 - 170 bhp. bought 6 years ago with 120k miles for £6.5k. Now over 200k miles and going strong. Serviced and maintained - Best car ive owned 50 mpg general and 62mpg on a long run
Loved the video, Joe! I bought a 2014 Octavia with the same 1.6 TDI engine recently at auction and it’s brilliant. Managed 65mpg on the journey home without even trying. 117k miles, serviced every year and aside from some slightly scuffed wheels, remarkably clean. All for £3k! Bargains can still be had
It doesn't look 13 years old. I used to have a 1.6tdi octavia and loved it. Your Passat is so much better looking than the recently launched version. I look forward to hearing how comfortable and ecomical it is, over the coming months.
I've a 1.6 Bluemotion Golf diesel , 2011 with over 100k on the clock that I've owned for the last 10years.
Averages 60/70 mpg (seen over 80 on mile munching trips) and returns over 800 miles to a tank (55lts) enables us to travel from Lancashire to the Jurassic Coast and back without the need for a refuel.
I've All Season tyres on the Golf that reduces mpg but still returning brilliant figures for a 13 year old car....maintenance is King.
Enjoyed the vlog and you have a new sub mate 😁
Amazing, makes the current offering look a bit silly doesn't it! 👌🏽
@@JoeAchilles1 ...it's the reason we've owned it for so long as simply can't find a better car to replace it.
How many injectors have you replaced on it ?
My wife has the vw beetle with the 1.6 blue motion it’s incredible on diesel. My Tiguan hybrid is crap on fuel compared to it 😅
@@richardsmith8938 Well if you change oil on such short intervals better hope it doesn't consume too much fuel, as you're dumping all your money into oil changes. I'm all for shorter intervals but every 5k is a lot, 10k is the sweet spot in my opinion. Luckily you don't seem to be doing too much mileage a year so i guess it all evens out.
Great to see support from a local business. Well done to all involved at Elite Garages.
Great to see a family run garage featured. Interesting video, look forward to seeing what happens with this.
Great to see small family businesses featured 👍🏽
Fantastic service too!
@@JoeAchilles1 that’s what’s great about these small family run businesses isn’t it…. They truly value their customers 👌🏾
13:36 Love to see a Nissan S-Cargo being used properly
Such a great little vehicle! I saw it on the Elite Garages stand at Festival of Speed - hope it will be there this summer!
Big up the Elite Garages team! I get my MOT and service done with them every year
Love this new format style of content Joe, especially with cars which are more relatable to the masses. I absolutely love a fuel economy challenge, so I look forward to see what’s in store for this Passat! 😁
Glad you enjoy it!
Those 1.6 TDI Bluemotions are great, my family have one in a B8 Passat Estate, and it'll do 60+ MPG and 800 miles on a tank on a motorway run without even trying, and it has 18" wheels with semi sporty tyres! It's not very quick, but decently torquey to drive 😄Looking forward to the adventure!
The 2.0L diesel is just better I had a 1.6 before upgrading to the 2.0L the power difference is very noticeable you still get 60mpg as the engine isn't being worked as hard.
I remember used to own a diesel Passat CC 2.0 that used to be able to take us to Dorset and back to Yorkshire on a single tank.
Joe, you never mentioned how many miles the Passat had clocked up, when you purchased it at the auction!
@@chryschrysostomou5392Very true! 93k
2.0 TDI is much better. 1.6 TDI can be problematic also.
Love the video - I am a sucker for material about used cars being bought back up to scratch. Subscribed.
Just bought my third Passat this week - superb cars!👍👍
This is such great content, i cant wait to see this epic challenge. The Passat is a mile muncher💪
A back to basics video. It’s a thumbs up from me dude 👍👍
Glad you liked it
This is a genuinely interesting video. Great pick on the vehicle and valid points about alignment and running the right tyre on the right wheel. Very interested to see the results.
Excellent video! Love the feature of Elite Garages 👏
Really nice car! I had a 2007 Passat with the 2 liter turbo. Still my favorite drive to this day.
Great service from Elite Garages as always! Brian and Pavel really know their stuff and they have quick access to a huge range of tyres from their local warehouse. Good luck Joe with the challenge
Couldn't agree more!
Just bought a 2014 Passat Bluemotion 1.6 Estate premium a few weeks back and loving it. Only paid £3,995
Absolutely love this kind of content! Amazing video mate, as always. Can‘t wait to see more of this journey
Amazing ! Thanks for the content, Joe! Wish you a wonderful trip ! 🚙
Great video, I can't wait to see how the journey goes! Just booked my car in for an MOT as Horsham is super close to me! Thanks for the recommendations.
Great to see Elite Garages featured 👍
more interesting to me than the new stuff you have on the channel!
Awesome video Mr Joe. They should open a garage here in South Africa
We need plenty reliable mechanics all time.
I don't think you would like U.K. garage prices. Cars like this are one safety inspection away from being beyond economic repair.
Great video - looking forward to the next (I learnt to drive in a Passat!)! Elite also happens to be my local garage of choice - always friendly, always efficient - I'd highly recommend it!
A really interesting video. The car was a good buy, clearly, and having had the thorough service and overhaul should be good for many years yet. Looking forward to more videos on this scenario looking at the sort of car that is commonplace on the roads. Nice one Joe!
As I was saying the other day Joe, even if there are frustrations at times on your side, videos like this keep us on the edge of our seat! Brilliant! 😊Can’t wait to see what happens next! Well done !
Cheers, Tom
Real, relatable and authentic content. I’m enjoying a lot of increasing nostalgic reviews across many channels. It’s almost as if we all know it can never get better than what we had.
If I may be annoyingly pedantic for a moment, Horsham is in West Sussex, not Surrey. The only reason I care is because I live there. Loving these videos. Down to earth and entertaining.
Haha yes I've been corrected on this a few (hundred) times since posting this, apologies to anyone who lived in Sussex and/or Surrey 🫣
I believe the max weight Royal Mail mail parcels is 30kg so those Post Office scales were a great idea ! 👍
What a cracking video Joe, loving this mate and can’t wait for the next instalment.
The best diesel challenge is back, excited 👍💪😉
😊😊😊
I bought a 2011 1.4 TSI DSG Passat in February this year. Gave it a new set of wheels, full service and MOT. So far the only things that needed some work was the A/C that somehow lost it's cooling liquid and currently the steering lock module is giving some intermittent warnings of being defective, which the local Bosch service station is busy sourcing the replacement part for. Other than that, we have done some miles in the car already and it really is a very pleasant car to own and drive. Definitely think that you will not be disappointed by this one.
The headlights came out like new!! Good job 👍
I've run a B7 Passat Alltrack 2.0tdi 177 DSG for the last 4 years, as a family workhorse replacement to a much loved E91 330i manual. Excellent mile muncher and very capable in snow with 4-Motion and all season tyres. Not as bombproof as I'd hoped though. DSG box issues (sorted at £2.5k at VW independant), split EGR pipe, DPF nearing end of life at 100k (due to ash build up rather than being blocked), snapped rear springs, seized rear bushings, electric handbrake sticking. Guess mainly 'wear and tear' but I think my E91 more reliable overall.
Was it the mechatronic unit by any chance that went in the DSG?
How did you guess? 🙂. Whilst DSG box apart they also changed clutch packs and clutch release bearings. This was at 80,000 miles. In my ownership it gets a DSG service (oil and filters) every 50,000 together with Haldex service. Ignore the 'sealed for life' mantra from VW.
@@chrisgell9052 The reliability of the DSG’s, or lack thereof, is something that should be addressed by VW. You’re lucky you don’t have the dry packs in the lesser powered vehicles. My dad had an Audi A3 e-tron and the mechatronic unit on that went, £3k repair, thankfully covered by warranty. He’s got a 2.0tdi Ultra Audi A6 2018 now and he did a DSG service at 40k miles, touch wood nothings popped yet on it but i definitely won’t be getting a dsg anytime soon.
An excellent vehicle with the bonus of a superb colour combination. Those leather seats would clean up beautifully using Gliptone's range of leather care products. Lovely choice of tyre for this fuel efficient vehicle. My choice would be the Cross Climate for use all year round. Great service from Elite Garages. For those not local enough to use them looking up a local Bosch approved independent garage is well worth doing. Thank you.
Absolutely love this video Joe. Intrigued!!
Elite Garage ❤ great service.
Enjoyed the video ❤
Great video Joe and what a refreshing change to see something so different. Looking at the potential mileage you got from previous diesels and hopefully that will be replicated with this Passat, it’s frustrating that diesels are so demonised now.
I bought a 2015 Passat Japanese import last September with less than 25k km on it. It’s immaculate, I love it. Importing right had drive cars into Ireland changed from the UK to Japan due to Brexit.
Great to see Elite Garages working on the Passat. Looking forward to the next video!!
my dad owns one, 2.0TDI executive model, very nice comfortable car, pulls well and decent on fuel. Never any major issues
Great video Joe! Such a real world perspective and what a brilliant business to deal with :)
Cool video really interesting. And great to see you doing more variety. 👍👍👍
I had one, 1.6tdi, estate, 2012 year - bought for running Scotland to the Midlands regularly - I was never blown away by the economy. It was good, but not as good as I was expecting.
This video is absolute class! Great job
Great video! Fantastic to see a local company featured, well done to Elite Garages and all of their brilliant team! Best of luck Joe on your adventure 🛞 🚘
Wow 60 years!
Love this upload - variety is important
Horsham, Sussex I think but great to see you down my neck of the woods. Great video as always though!
Ahh yes, how did I get that wrong 🫣 Cheers
West Sussex
Hi mate good video, I work there and was the one who noticed you when you were about to leave😂
Lovely colour Passat, who doesn't love Cashmere
Hey Joe - great video, interesting, fun and relevant thanks😊👍
I recently gave up leasing and bought a V70, last of the D5's and with a manual box, got more love for it than any new car ive had in a long while!
On my fourth Passat estate now, a 19 plate 2.0 Tdi with DSG. I'm getting 59 mpg overall and 62 on runs, sometimes hitting 71 mpg if I'm on a hospital drive. I can easily fit 2 road bikes in the back, seats folded and 3 bikes + 4 adults if I remove wheels, drop the boot floor and pack carefully. Great car.
Nice video! I like the concept, an affordable car that isn’t a shit box! Be good to see how things progress 👌🏻
It was very interesting to see this video as I have a 2011 Golf 1.6tdi Bluemotion Technology which I've had since new and found it to be an excellent car. And also interesting to hear you talk about how good tyres make a huge difference to a car's efficiency. 20 years ago I had two identical cars, one fitted with cheap tyres and one fitted with Conti eco contact tyres and the one with eco tyres did 10% better mpg.
Really lovely! I recently bought a VW Passat 2.0 TDi CC version, a 2010! I have had it 6 weeks and it has been a dream so far. So smooth and powerful.
There is nothing quite like a relatable video! Be interesting to see what you have in mind.
Love the video and the format 😊
Just got rid of a 1999 2l TDi passat. 240,000 miles and still running well. Serviced every 5k miles with synth oil and filter.
Im on my 5th Passat TDI. Kept my last one 11 and a half years . Advertised it Thursday night, sold it for full asking price on the Saturday (first person to see it) with 200k on it. Awesome motors and frugal with it.
Looks very tidy for its age. Cracking motor. Like others, I'm more excited at seeing how this motor performs more than a new model.
What you have bought is a solid well built, spacious, safe, fast, economical, quality car for peanuts.
The uk is nuts when it comes to car prices
I keep watching American videos here and thinking the same. I think the reason is there are lots of fixed costs in running a car here in the U.K. so most people just have one good one. It would be interesting to know what all that work in the garage cost. For Joe Public it could be approaching what they paid for the car.
1.6tdi the worst engine ever, had to fit 5 new injectors in 2 years, i got rid of the crap, and got a 2.0 tdi, a different story all together...
Interesting and intriguing! Thank you Joe 😊
Just make sure you do fairly regular longer trips, to prevent the DPF from blocking up. These 1.6's are bar-stewards for it.
I’m seeing a new level of production and presentation, looks really professional and entertaining mate 👍 EDIT: Just finished watching, super excited about the trip now!
Great Video Joe and lovley Passat not a VW fan boy really owned one once a Bora great car for most of my time with it 1.9PD TDI great on fuel, but have very fond memories of my dad having a company Passat 1986 GL5 5 cylinder 2.0 Ltr Petrol sounded lovley.
Can't wait to see what adventure your up to in this Passat 👍
I drive a 2015 BMW Touring 328D with MSport adjustable suspension. I averaged 5.0 l/100 kms going 117kph on the highway or 73 mph over a 400 km round trip. It has a 2 litre 4 cylinder diesel engine producing 181 hp and 280 ft lbs of torque. Fuel economy aside, it drives and handles very well with 19 inch Pirelli Potenza tires and customizable factory suspension tuning. I can't give it up and get an EV.
Loving these normal car videos!
England at its best. Nice solid family business, lovely spring/summer weather 👍🏾
Coz no other country has family businesses and good weather 🙄
@@colinmacdougall4301 Calm down dear. I’m not exactly going to ‘praise’ the buses am I?
My base 2017 VW Jetta 1.4 is amazing in performance, ergonomics and handling. Hwy/City 41/31 US Gallon (3.7 ltr). Only problem a new a/c evaporator. New quieter Michelins replaced the noisy original wornout Bridgestones, and the style looks showroom new.
I had a 2.0tdi BKD Skoda octavia, once it had been to darkside, remap, 120% race injectors, GTB2260VK turbo and a whole host of other things, you'd think it would be rubbish on fuel. Granted, if you've a lead foot it was rubbish. But off boost and careful driving, I could get to 90mpg 😂. Miss that car, rusted away.
Great video Joe. I nice change up from the usual entertaining and informative reviews. And good for promoting Elite garages too. Recently I’ve been looking at acquiring a classic of some kind and would be looking at getting a full health check and service after buying one. So will keep them in mind as an option.
Now to just get my big boy pants on and actually buy one…. Maybe 😂😂😂
I used to have a Golf Bluemotion. The economy was brilliant. I did a 'Driving Miss Daisy' run and managed to get 81mpg. It was great on the wallet.
Great video Joe 🎉
Great video..
It did make me think what is the most fuel efficient car you could buy brand new today.
It used to be the Mitsubishi Mirage (non turbo 1.2l helps) but that isnt on sale brand new now. 60mpg in the real world.
Great video, Joe. What's the mileage of the Passat?
Wife has a 2018 2.0 TSi petrol. Great car. Only issue we have had is that the paint seems to chip easily.
Great family business
The ‘Dream Machine’ 😂 Love it mate!
Very much looking forward to seeing the outcome on this one! Why didn't the 3 series ED make the cut? 😊
Tank too small
Yes Joe this video is excellent. Love the car!!!!
I had a 2.0 TDi 13 plate Passat, bought it with 20K on it and let it go with about 150K after a few years … I later noticed it had been clocked by 100K miles. Nice car, little uncomfortable for me, little front heavy but quite efficient. I once recorded 70mpg in morning rush hour, on a 2hr cross country drive. I was waiting for the comment in this video about tracking, it was terrible at keeping alignment; I got through more tyres from uneven wear.
VW appear to have sorted the rear tyre wear problem by the B8.
Good stuff mate! 🙌
My dad had one (an estate) and it was amazing. It still is watching this video 👌
A friend has a Fabia with the same engine. His is remapped. The fuel economy no doubt outstrips this Passat considerably, it hauls around something like 300kg less mass. He likes to send me photos of his dash MPG calculator after econo-runs. It is usually north of 75MPG.
Cool daily, put a mild tune on for more performance, not a rocket but just unleash a heap more torque and probably MPG. Nice random video 👍 I’m tempted to get something similar, and a 2 seater as I’ve 2 girls 👍
