  • The long-awaited Feel Flows box set is finally here! It did not disappoint! There's much to digest and much to discuss so this week's episode is mainly a "grab bag" of first impressions.

    My favorite part so far is the extra 2 minutes or so of Wouldn't It Be Nice to Live Again. That sax solo on Riot makes me feel like I'm watching a early episode of SNL.

    Love all the rare Dennis stuff! Also love that they remastered 'Soulful Old Man Sunshine'...without Carl's 'Shun-Shine" that he hated. Don't like that the binding cracked after only one read. I also said this on another site but if you have friends who think the Beach Boys are just an old surf group, then have them listen to the backing track of 'It's About Time'. That song rocks regardless of the era!

      Sorry to have taken so long to respond to your comments, wcassady! For some reason, I didn't get the notification and I just ran across them now. I agree that the Dennis stuff is a highlight of the set! (It's a shame that so much of it has gone largely unheard until now!) "Susie Cincinnati" and "Good Time" always sounded out of place on their respective albums, but that was because they were leftovers from a different era. The Beach Boys were certainly not the only band to ever do that. Led Zeppelin put songs that were recorded 4 years earlier on one of their albums. There's a noticeable difference to my ears between songs that were recorded in 1970 and 1975-76. Thanks to "Feel Flows", these two songs are back with their own tribe

      Could be! It's a really great track and such a shame that it stayed "in the can" for decades (and now that we have the long version from "Feel Flows," the earlier released edit seems obsolete.) I was just thinking this morning about "Surf's Up" having no Dennis tracks, despite all the recording he had done at that time. There's a lot of different track selections that, arguably, could have made for a stronger album but, I was thinking, at the very least, I wish they'd swapped out "Student Demonstration Time" for "WIBNTOA." @@thebeachboysbasementwithst6444 I've always thought it strange that we go from a 100-mph "superb" collection of DW songs on Sunflower to ZERO on Surf's Up. Did Denny get sideways w/ Jack Rieley? Or just retreat after seeing Sunflower's poor showing commercially?
      Here's wiki's input: "Dennis Wilson's songs "4th of July" and "(Wouldn't It Be Nice to) Live Again" were recorded in early 1971 but left off the record.[44] According to Rieley, the absence of any Dennis songs on Surf's Up was for two reasons: to quell political infighting within the group concerning the album's share of Wilson-brother songs, and because Dennis wanted to save his songs for a solo album, projected for release in 1971. In December 1970, he released the single "Sound of Free" (credited to "Dennis Wilson & Rumbo"), but the album project was ultimately shelved.[45] Both sources come from Keith Badman's 2004 book.

    1 hour and 5 minutes into the video rthey mention Don Goldberg Sr (senior member of Surf's Up) wrote two songs with Brian Wilson in the 70s and one finially got a release on the Feel Flows box.
    According to Discogs he is credited on the Fell Flows box set with track nineteen album two, "Sweet And Bitter." Don is also credited with "Out In The Country (Version 1)and Out In The Country (Version 2)" on the Sail On Sailor 1972 box set. The amazing thing about the Surf's Up video is the two kids not even old enough to be in high school.

I was also baffled why they included 80s and 90s live versions of some songs. I don't own any of the Beach Boys Box Sets CDs. This looks like it was put together nice, but I think a better cover could have been created, rather then making color drawings of how the band posed in the inner liner photos for Sunflower. I have a bootleg CD called Landlocked, which has about 30 songs on it, many of which I think are also on the Feel Flows Box Set. A few songs which you mentioned, like Dennis's "I've Got A Friend" I've heard of. Think it would be good if you did a video concentrating on Dennis's early '70s songs, both with and without the Beach Boys. I am always partial to a photo of the band on any cover or box set. I'd probably have preferred it for Feel Flows too. The cover they gave us definitely beats most of the box set covers! (That surfboard style wood-grain on "30 Years of Harmony" still seems like an all-time low. They might as well have just put it in a plain brown box!) I've seen various bootlegs called "Landlocked" over the years but I haven't run across one with that many tracks. Sounds interesting! Thanks for the feedback on a "Dennis in the early 70s" video! @@thebeachboysbasementwithst6444 Agree that most of the Box Set covers for the Beach Boys have been on the bland side. Think Feel Flows cover is decent, but think also it could have been better. Since you like photos, think they could have used the Black and White photo showing all six, with Carl (without his beard) with his hair parted down the middle (this photo is in the book you showed in your video). This photo is one of my favorites of them. I looked at my Landlocked CD. It only has 23 tracks on it. It came out in Germany in 1994 on the Invasion Unlimited label. Most of the mixes on the songs sound pretty good. On "San Miguel", the drumming is sort of loud. On the studio version of "We Got Love", the mix is muddy, with the vocals somewhat buried. I also have their version of "Seasons In The Sun" on a bootleg CD of their unreleased second Christmas album from 1977. Thought they did a good job on it. The original by Terry Jacks has always been a favorite summer song of mine. Weird, because the song's narrator is talking about dying. Other then the title using the word "Seasons", wonder why the Beach Boys thought it would make a good Christmas song, lol.

      @@thebeachboysbasementwithst6444 I don't think the studio version of "We Got Love" has been officially released, although there's been a better mixed version on CZcams (with vocals more up front) for a number of years. Agree that the next box set should concentrate on the So Tough and Holland albums, with unreleased songs recorded during that time and live performances of the songs on those two albums. A number of people have posted imaginary follow up albums to Holland on CZcams, using unreleased versions of songs like "Good Timin' " and "California Feeling" along with other songs recorded by the group either together or individually. One album I think is called either Sweet Mountain or Sweet Water, another is called California Feeling. I find these interesting and enjoyable to listen to. Have listened to both the acappella version of "Marcella" and the background instrumentation for "You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone", both from the Feel Flows box set. Enjoyed both, especially "Marcella". I then checked CZcams for live performances of the BBs doing "You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone". A complete concert of them from May 9, 1972 in Munich, Germany came up on CZcams. Listened to some of it. It was good. Wish the group would consider cleaning up and releasing some of their complete concerts from 1967 through 1974, when they seemed most willing to showcase their latest albums and songs, saving the early stuff for the encores. Who knows, maybe they think they have enough live recordings released. Anyhow, hope you have a good Labor Day (holiday!) on Monday.

While I know a lot of it would be redundant of other live releases, I know there are a lot of songs they played during that period that we haven't had live versions of yet. @@thebeachboysbasementwithst6444 I thin you're right Steve, an in depth review of this will take a couple of video to cover everything in this set (Or one really long video divided in chapters).
      I agree with you that the endless "remixing" of their material could be a problem, however I didn't see the backing tracks & vocals to be a part of that. But if you're pursuing every new mix of a song i.e : wouldn't it be nice mono, stereo mix from 1998, 2010, etc (dates here are purely bogus but it's just to illustrate the point).
      Oh and on a completely different point, I forgot to mention that I agree with you that it's weird that they included songs like Susie Cincinnati, Cuddle Up and Marcella on this set. I could understand for "Old Movie (cuddle up) since it was probably when Dennis started to work on the song but being from the Carl and the Passion's album they could have waited for that album's session release. Maybe we can take it as a sign that there won't be a physical copy of this release. Which could also happen with Holland, hence the presence of Big Sur on here as well. Just speculating but who knows.

There's just too much there...happily!
      I know there are people who really love the remixes and the backing tracks/vocals. (I felt like a lot of it was just to pad out the set but I have to admit that I'm really enjoying it, particularly the backing tracks/vocals.)
      I, too, wondered about them including a few items from the "Carl & The Passions" period and if that meant there wasn't going to be physical release of stuff from that period. They sound very crisp and clear, but not sure I would go as far as to say I prefer them to the original pressings tho. I also haven't but barely even started to get into most of the unreleased material, although the bonus tracks and live cuts I've gotten to so far have all been great!! Songs like Sweet and Bitter, 4th of July, Loop de Loop, San Miguel and the early version of Good Time have all been awesome finds in this boxset! Overall, yeah it's a bit overwhelming with content, but that's the opposite of a problem for me with the Beach Boys! They really broke down everything about this era about as far as you can probably get.

      There's so much there that it's going to take me a number of listens to begin to digest it all (which, I guess, is the beauty of a big box set like this!) I still haven't heard the whole thing and I expect there are gems there that I missed the first time though. I'm thinking I'll return to it on the channel in a month or so. I'm also really appreciating the feedback and insights in the comments here. Thanks for your thoughts, Brandon! Always great to hear from you!

    Great video, Steve!
    I was thoroughly pleased with the presentation of the set, and it's clear those in charge had a lot of respect for the material at hand. My only complaints are sort of nitpicky.
    A few of these songs that were previously only available as bootlegs contained vocals or overdubs that aren't present here which is disappointing.
    I know it sounds greedy but I also can't shake the feeling that there is a good amount of material not included here. Maybe I'm just being selfish but there seem to be a number of missing links for previously unreleased tracks!

    • @danerd8978
      @danerd8978 Před 2 lety +2

      If you are refering to Seasons In The Sun, that was due to Al Jardine. He wanted to remix the Track himself for the set. He said he didn't like the Background Vocals, so he removed them. Susie Cincinati has two different mixes for both releases between the 5 and 2 Disc. As for the other differences, there are songs with more Vocals or Instrument Overdubs on things that weren't there on boots such as on My Solution. I don't know what else is missing?

      @@danerd8978 Thanks for the info! I hadn't done any comparison to see but I started thinking that the way the liner notes say "Basic track recorded on..." a certain date might indicate there was overdubbing long after the fact. Of course, I understand that few Beach Boys tracks were started and finished in one session by the early 70s but a lot of other boxes give a series of dates. (I also wondered if it's because, with so much of it being recorded at Brian's home studio, the record-keeping is not as fastidious.) Thanks again for the comments!

    • @thebeachboysbasementwithst6444
      @thebeachboysbasementwithst6444  Před 2 lety

      I've wondered if there are overdubs. The liner notes reading "Basic track recorded on..." a certain date made me consider it. It's hard for me to tell sometimes if it's an overdub or a remix too, especially with things I've only heard on bootleg before. (Naturally, I'd prefer "incomplete" versions from "the day" to something that was finished up decades later.)
      I, too, wonder what might be left "in the vault." There doesn't seem to be much in the way of "early takes" here but I'm wondering if that's down to them working mostly at Brian's home studio and, possibly, either recording over early takes or just starting with a basic track and building on it. (With The Beatles, I know, there are lots of alternate versions of "Blackbird" since Paul just played it over and over until he got one he liked. There aren't alternates of "Dear Prudence" because John just started with a basic track and built on it, wiping anything he didn't like.) Not sure exactly what The Beach Boys usual procedure was then.
      Thanks for the comments and insights, Magnanimous! Always great stuff!
