    Hi Steve! As I was watching this episode I was blown away when You shared my comment! What a blast! It is definitely my 15 minutes of fame!! I called my wife in to listen to it and she really enjoyed it but said she did not remember us ever going to a drive-in with me! She was joking (Thank Goodness :)) because we only met in 1992 and I was sharing the memories with my high school girlfriend from 1974. Thanks again for making me a celebrity..NYUK NYUK NYUK! P.S. I picked up the Beach Boys by the Beach Boys Book and am really enjoying it! Not a ton of new information but the pictures are fantastic! Surf's Up! Bill!

      Really glad you enjoyed me sharing your comments. (As I mentioned in the episode, you told the story better than I did, but it was so much fun, I wanted to try to pass it along as best I could.) Thanks again for sharing such a fun and interesting story! I agree about the Beach Boys book. There's actually a bit more info in it than I expected. I liked that they included at least a summary of recording session dates for the various albums. Still, as you say, not a lot of new information...the pictures are terrific! Great to hear from you, William!

    Thanks for the shout out Steve. I have to give credit to my father who referred to the 1936 election with “As Maine goes, so goes Vermont.” Lol
    Congratulations on the Funko pop too. On the Beach Boys Talk channel they once complained there’s no Funko pops of The Beach Boys. You should be honored!

      That's a great quote on Maine and Vermont! Good point about the lack of Beach Boys Funko Pops! It's an even more glaring omission now that I've been "immortalized." Good to hear from you, Joel, and thanks again for the info on the '36 election!

    Love your RED hoodie! You almost need tweezers to turn the Monster magazine's pages! Your viewers really appreciate you ! Your "Dylan" voice is a HOOT ! I believe the red Honda @ 9:42 is a CB-160, exactly like one i owned in 1972. It was a fun machine --the perfect size for in-town jaunts and short road trips. The YT clip of "Little Saint Nick" was very well done; thanks for the heads-up.
    I just loved hearing all the comments on "All Summer Long." Kind of bittersweet to think looking back that it was their last album to be considered "hip," or in-sync with the times. Many of us long-time fans have loved the music and the group SO much that we could've cared less what our friends thought, or what the Billboard Top 40 chart position was for a certain song, or what (later on) the Rolling Stone magazine review had to say. I think the course of time has borne our instincts out: this was no ordinary pop group or rock band; Brian is no ordinary musical talent. Bono said it really well: "The genius of [their] music is the JOY that's in it."
    Thanks for another wide-ranging effort, Steve!

      Thanks for the fantastic feedback (as always), Bill! Thanks for the feedback on the Dylan impression. (As I've mentioned before, I never expected impressions..and singing...would be part of the channel when I started. Now, it seems like it wouldn't be right to quote somebody like Dylan without, at least, making an attempt to do the voice.)
      Thanks, too, for the feedback on the Honda! Not being a "motorcycle guy," I was a little worried I might end up showing an illustration of the wrong thing. (As it often happens, I ended up learning some cool stuff about Hondas, and Matchlesses, that I never would have if not for the channel.) So cool to hear from someone who actually owned a CB-160!
      Excellent perspective on the Beach Boys and thanks for passing along that great quote from Bono. Always great to hear from you, Bill! Have a great week!

    I need to get a copy of that ABC's book haha. Speaking as a member of gen z, it looks like the popularity of the Beach Boys is rising faster than a lot of diehards would realize, especially after decades of trying (sometimes desperately) to maintain the band's legacy. The fan mixes have really kept me entertained in between official releases; the work of Dae Lims on CZcams in particular has done a lot to ease my anxiety over the rapid growth of A.I. His "finished" version of the 90's track Desert Drive is so good it's uncanny. Just my latest ramble, thanks for all the great videos as always!

    Another enjoyable episode, Steve! The mystery unboxing was great! I'm glad you like the Funko Pop, as I really enjoyed adding the personal details and Beach Boys bits to further make the "Pop Yourself," YOU. I was overjoyed to find the mini Beach Boys albums and Famous Monsters magazines to allow you to customize as you see fit. BTW, the little black cube is to be used if you'd like as a table to display either the albums or magazines if you choose to have the figure out of the box (the little hands can only hold so much.) This project kind of brought me back to my model and diorama building days as a kid. Anyway, I also enjoyed your take on Carli's book, and your mono/stereo comments about little Honda. Like Brian, I am deaf in one ear and grew up frequently talking out of the side of my mouth towards my good ear; my Mom's maiden name was Wilson, and yes, I play bass. Go figure.

    • @thebeachboysbasementwithst6444
      @thebeachboysbasementwithst6444  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thanks for the follow-up on the use of the cube. For now, I've repacked everything in the box and put it inside the plastic display box. (I was careful to put the mini items, in their bag, right up front where they can be seen.) BTW, I want to hear more about your model building and diorama exploits one of these days! I did the Aurora monster models as a kid (but not very well.) I don't know if you're familiar with Puzzle Zoo on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. They used to have great built-up kits and models in the 90s and I used to get mistaken for "their model builder from San Diego" by some of the staff when I would go in. Apparently, I looked like him. Never met the guy, but he obviously did great work!
      Really happy you enjoyed the rest of the episode, Chris! Thanks again for that amazing Funko Pop. It's not only a great thing to have, it made for a really fun episode this week! Have a great week and I'm sure we'll talk soon!

    Steve, it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the mono mixes vs the stereo mixes (or even duophonic). I'm a bigger fan of the mono mixes, with their punchier, focused sound or that chaotic wall of sound that Brian helped create. Some stereo mixes can still benefit songs occasionally, and there are of course little details in the songs that differ in each format. IMO the best remasters of the mono (or stereo) come from HDtracks/Apple Music (from 2015?) which sound great, and refrain from removing any background noises (ex. finger snap on the first beat of Car Club is digitally removed in the 2012 remasters). There's also the modern stereo remixes made decades later, dividing some fans lol. Just thinking about the technical side of things, I'm curious to what format you most enjoy the band 😎

    • @thebeachboysbasementwithst6444
      @thebeachboysbasementwithst6444  Před 3 měsíci +2

      I agree about the mono mixes. I know it was true of the Beatles, and it seems to be true, also, of the Beach Boys that, until the late 60s at least, the stereo mix was a bit of an "after-thought" with the mono mix being the one given the attention. Of course, famously, with Brian's lack of hearing in one ear, mono makes more sense for him anyway. The mono mixes generally sound better to me...in some cases, very markedly punchier and more focused, as you point out. It's a great idea for an episode (or a series of episodes!) I've made a note of it. Thanks for the suggestion and for the great info and feedback, John!

    • @burlingtonbill1
      @burlingtonbill1 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@thebeachboysbasementwithst6444 I think it's important to note the different recording techniques of a "stereo" version of a given LP over the years. The earliest "Duophonic" records just had mono tracks moved around and assigned to one channel or the other. I agree, there's not a lot to be gained sonically, but it was a start.The Stephen Desper era actually recorded each vocal or instrument with an ambient mic and a 2nd one for direct (or close-up) sound, so there was some sense of presence in the room. (This was aside from his unique processing for Dynaquad playback.) To my ears, the Sunflower album sounds radically different, and better, than most of the earlier LPs, on sound merits alone. A few years later, there were 48-track machines available to work with, whether or not the Desper-type mic techniques were used or not. In the ProTools era, the possibilities are staggering and the sound is recorded directly into computers.

    Awesome Funko Pop Steve! I have one Funko Pop. It's one of Bugs Bunny that came with a Blu-ray set celebrating, I think, 80 years of Bugs Bunny.
    It's funny you said how you thought they said mattress on Little Honda. That's exactly what I thought they said as well. It wasn't till the last ten years or so that I learned about the actual motorcycle in the song. And of course, I listened to the All Summer Long album more after your episodes covering it. I do like that video for Little Saint Nick. I also love those videos by Summertime Blooz.
    I wasn't aware you were big into monster movies. I, of course, grew up watching Godzilla and Gamera plus many many more. I loved Godzilla Minus One this past year. If I ever get a video up, hopefully soon, it's about a Godzilla release I recently got. Anyway, I love these kinda episodes. Thanks Steve!
    P.S. This episode might have your best impression to date.

      So great to hear I wasn't the only one who thought it was "mattress" in "Little Honda!"
      I haven't seen "Godzilla Minus One." I'll check it out when I come across it. I might go see "Godzilla Kong" (which, I believe, is American rather than Japanese) this week. I'm not expecting much but a friend of mine has a movie theater near here, so I usually go by to say "hi" and check out the movie if it's anything I think I might possibly enjoy.
      I'd love to find a good set of early Godzilla films on DVD with some commentary tracks. (As you might imagine, I love a good commentary track!) I know there was a nice-looking, expensive set a few years ago. I don't recall if it had commentaries. I think it was all the original Japanese versions, which, I understand would be the preference of the serious aficionado. I'd actually prefer to see the dubbed, re-edited US versions that I grew up with.
      Anyway, I'm looking forward to your Godzilla episode! I believe I've subscribed, so I should get a notification, but please let me know when it posts. I won't want to miss it!
      Thanks, as always, for the great feedback, Michael!

      @@thebeachboysbasementwithst6444I haven't seen the new Godzilla x Kong movie yet. That big box set of Godzilla by Criterion is a good way to get all 15 of the showa era movies but the complaint I heard was that it only had a few of the dubbed versions of the movies. I haven't watched the dubbed versions in a long time. But the way to watch a movie is the way that brings you the most joy.
      As far as the channel, I decided I just have to put something out no matter how bad. I've been recording hours of video off and on for seven months. If I put the experience in Beach Boys terms. It would be like the Beach Boys spending seven on Keepin The Summer Alive. lol

      @@michaelthemovieattic I love that "Keeping' The Summer Alive" comparison! Thanks for an excellent laugh!
      I hope you'll go ahead and get started. Inevitably, you'll look back on it with some embarrassment. (I can't bear to look at my early, and even not-so-early, episodes now.) I figure that you can't start out "with experience" so the only thing to do is dive in, and if you look back later with some embarrassment, it means you're making progressing. (If your 100th episode seems as good as your first...then it's time to worry!) Anyway, here's hoping to see an episode soon! Thanks again, Michael!
