    I worked in Hollywood for around 10 years, and this video sure brought back memories. In the 90s, I knew somebody who worked at the Capitol Records building and got to visit inside. Very cool! That fountain in front of the bank on Sunset and Vine was the one The Go-Go's danced in for their Our Lips Are Sealed video (I used to work with Belinda before they got their record deal). Thanks for the video.

      That's great! I lived on Franklin between Highland and Cahuenga from 1985 to 1992 (when it was rough!) and then moved over to West L.A., so I know the area pretty well, though I never had a chance to "venture inside the tower" at Capitol. I'll have to check the "Our Lips Are Sealed" video. It came out before I moved to L.A., so the fountain wouldn't have registered with me at the time. Thanks for letting me know about that, Paul! Much appreciated!

    Thanks so much for the trip around SoCal , and for the recognition regarding Bill Justis .
    While the tour of the Hard Rock Cafe was great , the Jaguar guitar , ( Clearly signed by Carl ) , is not a 1966 model . A ‘66 would have a bound fingerboard , ( which started in ‘65 ) , and rectangular block inlays rather than the “ dot “ inlays . The instrument pictured has the bridge cover , ( which everyone discarded ) , in place , but does not have the flip-up string mute . Many people , including Carl , removed the mute .
    All of these facts point to an earlier 62 to 64 model or , ( more likely ) , one of the very good Fender Japan re-issues from the 1990’s .
    Further , the guitar looks a little pristine to be a stage or studio used model of Carl’s . Moreover , by 1966 , Carl was almost exclusively playing Rickenbacker 12 string guitars .
    Whew ! … sorry , sometimes my inner guitar geek is exposed .

      Great to have the feedback from the "inner guitar geek," Beanie! Thanks for the excellent info! Especially because the guitar was autographed specifically to the Hard Rock Cafe, I wondered if it was just a guitar somebody handed Carl to autograph, rather than having been stage or studio -used by him. (And I'll bet your suggestion that it might be a 90s Fender Japan reissue is likely correct!) Thanks, once again, for the knowledgable and insightful feedback, Beanie! Always greatly appreciated!

    Great part two of the tour! I loved the hand prints. It was cool to see the Ramones. I just recently jumped into the Ramones. I can't believe I've never really listened to them. The only thing I ever heard from them prior to my recent infatuation, was Spiderman from a Saturday Morning Cartoons CD I got years ago.
    I almost bought a CD version of Keith Moon's solo album years and years ago. I wish I would have gotten it. I also like that Annette album you got. I have The Monkeys Uncle on a Disney CD. Thanks again for the Great stuff Steve!

    • @thebeachboysbasementwithst6444
      @thebeachboysbasementwithst6444  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I feel lucky to have seen the Ramones live in the early 80s...especially with the sad mortality rate in the band. Since starting this channel, I've been surprised how many Beach Boys fans are also Ramones fans. (I thought I was alone!)
      The CD release of Keith Moon's album is pretty interesting because it's full of outtakes and tracks he recorded for a follow-up album that unsurprisingly, and probably mercifully, didn't happen when the funds were finally cut off. Once again, I wouldn't say any of it is "good" but it's definitely interesting and gives a real insight into what those crazy sessions must have been like.
      Thanks, as always, for the excellent feedback, Michael! Have a great week!

    Thanks again Steve for a great episode. Totally agree with you that the hard Rock Cafe was tasteless in displaying Murray Wilson's draft will. Maybe they think shaming the dead is in some way heroic? A common storyline over the last 60 years has been Murray as the demon. It seems like bashing Murray Wilson is a bit of a Bloodsport that many in and around the music industry seem to delight in. I read David Marks book where he talks about Murray driving them around California in the station wagon touring in those early days. If Murry hadn't done that they may have never existed. Time to stop bashing the dead, people.

    • @thebeachboysbasementwithst6444
      @thebeachboysbasementwithst6444  Před 2 měsíci +3

      Thanks for the feedback and especially for the thoughts on the Murry Wilson draft will. (Thinking about it later, the fact it's a "draft" makes it seem even less fair to display. I suppose he was "venting" more than anything else and it probably wasn't intended to ever be seen by anyone else.) Bashing Murry does seem to be "fair game" for a lot of people and, from everything I've heard, he was definitely a flawed individual. On the other hand, as you point out (and as the recent Disney+ documentary stresses), he seems to have been extremely committed to his sons' music careers and did everything to support them in the best way he knew how (as mis-directed as he sometimes might have been.) Thanks again for the thoughts and feedback, Paul! The perspective is much appreciated!

    Seems like you had a great time in Hollyeood, great to see the handprints of all those famous music giants from the past including Brian, Little Richard, The Wcking Crew, and The Ramones to name just a few. I also noticed The Moody blues there. I have to agree with you regarding Murray's draft will, it's done in very bad taste and sould be removed. Thanks also for the shout out on Keith Moon. I loved your comment regarding Keith being a member of The Beach Boys, if Mike thought he had problems with Dennis at the time?, just imagine him having to deal with two crazy drummers in the band.

      Thanks, John! At the moment, I'm laughing at the image you conjured up of Mike Love having BOTH Dennis and Keith Moon in the band! I don't know if karma is part of Mike's belief system, but, if that had happened, I'll bet he'd be thinking he must have REALLY messed up in a former life! Really glad you enjoyed the episode! Your kind and thoughtful feedback is always greatly appreciated! Have a great week, John!

    1. That's a really nice musical artist mural in front of the Capitol tower. 2. My father visited Los Angeles in the 1970s, and he was a bit disappointed in how Hollywood looked at that time, not what he expected. Nice to know improvements were made. 3. You're right about the Keith Moon likeness, his expression looks more like that of Charlie Watts. 3. When I last went to the Hard Rock Casino in the other Hollywood (Florida) , I saw an artifact from Taylor Hawkins, but the inscription read as if he was still alive. I notified someone that it should sadly be updated. It still wasn't several days later. Hope it is by now. 4. I agree with you about the Murry Wilson letter, but I wonder who provided it to the Hard Rock. Brian? Doesn't seem like it would be Carl, but who knows? 5. Wow, that Keith Moon Don't Worry Baby single credits the production to "Mel Evans." It was Mal Evans! Was that a mistake or done on purpose for Moonesque humorous reasons, one has to wonder.

    • @thebeachboysbasementwithst6444
      @thebeachboysbasementwithst6444  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I totally missed the "Mel Evans" credit! I think it was one of those cases of seeing what I assumed was there, rather than what it actually was. It's nice to see Hollywood revitalizing. They've made a lot of progress and still have a ways to go. I stayed at a hotel in Hollywood, which was convenient to most of the places I wanted to go. There were a lot of families on vacation, many from overseas. Maybe I was projecting, but I felt like a lot of those dads were regretting the choice of vacation spots; between the crazy traffic and the sketchy characters wandering around. I got the feeling, for many of them, it was not at all what they expected. (Hope they ended up enjoying it despite all that!) Good question on the Murry Wilson letter! I assume it came up for auction somewhere and the Hard Rock bought it, but how it went from the Wilson family into public hands would be very interesting to know. And, I agree, the expression on that Keith Moon plaque looks a lot like Charlie Watts! It occurred to me since recording this that, maybe, the likeness looks better straight-on than from below. Maybe if it wasn't so high on the wall, it would have looked more accurate. (Maybe...) Thanks, as always, for the great feedback, Joel!

    Steve, sorry to be so tardy on this [June is our family's busiest month of the year, by far.] June 1964 was when I began my personal BBs intense fandom, with the purchase of the "I Get Around" / "Don't Worry Baby" 45 single. All those years ago... (thanks, G. Harrison)
    These 2 episodes on LA have been GREAT! Last time I was out there was 2016 for a “Jeff Lynne’s ELO” concert at the Hollywood Bowl. Best light show I’d ever seen ! ELO was one of my 2 bucket list concerts - the original band had broken up in 1986 and Lynne had quit touring until the truncated Zoom tour of 2001. After that, no tours until the 5-show NY & LA tours of 2016. (Now he’s touring again, the FINAL one.) I got to see Richard Tandy (R.I.P.) but missed my other bucket list band, Tom Petty.
    Brian’s handprints were done approximately 289 days after he married Melinda. Wonder if she encouraged him? Neat to see 4 of the 5 original Moodies (ironic that Mike Pinder, who had moved to Calif. in the 80’s, wasn’t part of that 1994 ceremony, possibly by his choice, since he’d left the band.) SO COOL that you found the Hard Rock’s “Carl Wilson guitar,” and thanks for the shout-out! I almost felt like I was right there with you: I remember the lighting & atmosphere so well. Agree 100% about the “Murry will.” Keith Moon replaces Dennis Wilson: an unwritten episode of The Twilight Zone -- where anything can happen !
    Annette was seemingly every young boomer’s crush, whether you were a devotee of the Mouse Club on TV or not. My guess is someone bought it for the cover fotocandy, played it once and filed it away in the record shelves. I have a few like that ! P.S. Thanks for the SVE URL. Their version of "Our Prayer" was spot on!

      Great to hear from you, Bill! I can understand you're busy, but you have definitely been missed! (Hope you had a great birthday too!)
      ELO at the Hollywood Bowl must have been great! What a great venue to see that show! I, also, sadly missed Tom Petty. His passing was a real shock. I always figured he'd be one of the last guys around to "tell the story." (I thought the same about Carl, "back in the day" too...figuring he'd probably be not just "the last of the Wilsons," but probably also the "last Beach Boy.")
      Thanks again for the tip on Carl's guitar at the Hard Rock and happy that you mentioned the Moody Blues handprints. (I knew you are a fan and included them partially with you in mind.)
      Thanks for the laugh on the "Keith replaces Dennis" "Twilight Zone" episode! I'd love to see that!
      You might be right about the Annette album having been bought as "eye candy." It certainly doesn't look like it saw much play. Even the original Buena Vista inner sleeve is untorn and unwrinkled.
      Happy to hear you checked out that high school vocal performance of "Our Prayer"!
      Hope your busy times have been "happily busy" and, as always, great to hear from you, Bill! Welcome back!

    A great episode Steve and there is a lot of info here that i didnt know and its always good to learn these things as its impossible to know everything, no matter how dedicated we may be.
    I found those handprints really interesting and its a brilliant idea and must be a great way to spend some time by looking up your favourite stars and its so much better than just the usual signature.
    I agree that to post Murrys will on the wall of what should be a family friendly public place is totally inappropriate and such a personal document does not belong for the world to see as its obviously been posted to humiliate the man and love or hate him, everybody has the right to privacy alive or dead and this should be removed as it does neither the venue or those reading the contents any favours and i think its cruel.
    I love the architecture too as you can tell its America as i am sure when you look at UK, you believe the same about our buildings
    Its really nice to see the background when you pan the cam around as it gives us all a glimpse of what it was like for the group as we have built up a picture by various references in their recordings in the same way i presume that Americans do when they listen to the Beatles and indeed as i have previously mentioned , here in UK , we do run a Magical Mystery Tour around the Liverpool spots that were important for the groups history ie, Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields,,Cavern, Grave of Eleanor Rigby and of course where each member lived and i believe its only Ringos house thats survived and i am sure somebody wiser will correct me about that but all in all Steve, this is a very informative post and your research is Spot On, as usual.

      @thebeachboysbasementwithst6444  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Thanks for the feedback, Chris! Your description of the "Magical Mystery Tour" reminds me that I've still never been to Liverpool and really need to make that trip some day. It would be fascinating to see those places! My wife, my son and I all love visiting the UK but we've mostly stayed in or near London. Next time, we need to go "further afield." I've been missing out! (As you mentioned the buildings, I sure prefer the architecture of the UK to the "built to be demolished in a few years" boxes of Los Angeles.)
      Thanks for the thoughts on the Murry display at the Hard Rock. I think "cruel" is the right word. Whatever their issues with him, I'm sure none of the Wilson boys would have liked seeing their dad characterized like that in a public restaurant.
      Thanks so much for the feedback, Chris! Always great to get your perspective and it's much appreciated!

    Part 2 of your L.A. trip was just as enjoyable as Part 1, Steve - thank you for taking the time to share with all of us! Your brief video of the Capital Records building reminded me of some great concerts I saw in the 80's just across the street at The Palace (apparently it's now The Avalon.) That's where I saw The Outfield twice, as well as Mister Mister (did you ever see any concerts at The Palace?) Thanks so much for the surprise shout out when you were at The Guitar Center in Hollywood! You were living in Hollywood in the 80's & 90's when that particular strip was REALLY something to experience. It was fondly referred to as "Guitar Row," as it featured not only music stores which mostly sold new equipment, but also several vintage guitar shops which made that area an absolute treat to visit. Bass guitar-wise, the store I managed (The Bass Centre) was located in Studio City, just over the Hollywood Hills on Ventura Blvd just east of Laurel Canyon Blvd (at that location from '88-'94.) Ventura Blvd actually becomes Cahuenga Blvd at Lankershim as you travel east. Famous jazz club The Baked Potato (owned by Don Randi of The Wrecking Crew) is located at that intersection. George Martin's hands!😳I agree with you that the Murry Wilson document at The Hard Rock seems rather mean spirited and out of place (bad form, HRC management.) Geez - what a freakin' downer. God bless Keith Moon and his love of The Beach Boys.😜 Looking forward to more Carl Wilson content in your next episode. Oh, and LOVE the vocal ensemble!

      Thanks for the great feedback, Chris! Weirdly, I don't think I ever saw anything at The Palace. (It was just a couple of blocks from the apartment I had on Franklin from 1985 to 1991.) Looking back, it seems like most of my concert-going was either at one of the big venues, like the Forum or Universal Amphitheater, or "dives" where I was going to see some friend's band, like Wong's West, the Whisky (on an "off night") or whatever the place that became the Viper Room was before it became cool. (I can't remember the old name at the moment.)
      At that location in Studio City, I'm sure I must have driven past the Bass Centre many times between '88 and '94. (Seems like I was on that stretch of road for one thing or another all the time.)
      Glad you checked out the vocal ensemble!

Cool that you checked out the Beach Boys star, and also imprinted Brian Wilson hand prints in cement/concrete, and that you show photos and give dates when the star was placed, and Brian put his hands in the mixture to leave the hand prints. Surprised that Los Angeles has so many independent record stores still operating. Nice that the Hard Rock cafe in Los Angeles has one of Carl's guitars on display. You didn't go into this, but my guess is that Hard Rock has to pay a fee to the artist's management/family, in order to display items connected to the artist. Agree with you about the display of an early draft of Murry Wilson's will. Checked out the performances by the South Vocal Ensemble and thought they did a really good job!! To me, their performance of "Our Prayer" is almost identical to the Beach Boys' version (maybe it being a little "fuller"/ sounding like 10 to 20 voices, versus 6 voices. Give them much credit, in honoring some local heroes/the Beach Boys, especially Brian! Have you seen Giggens cover of "Surfin", which he recently posted on CZcams? He does all the vocals, and plays all the instruments, calling himself the Airedales. Think he did a good job. He recently talked about a Connecticut band by the name of the Burkhardts (which has 5 - 6 guys in it). They've released a couple of EPs, and sound a lot like the Beach Boys of 1964 or 1965.

      I was really surprised by the number of used record stores too. Seems like, "back in the day," there were maybe 8 or 10 in the greater Los Angeles area that were worth a visit (not counting the big chain stores that only sold new stock, like Wherehouse and Tower Records.) When I started researching stores before my trip, there were literally too many to list. Not all of them were that good and I get the feeling that a lot of them probably won't last long. Others, of course, were great!
      Glad to know you checked out the South Vocal Ensemble! You're right: "Our Prayer" does sound a lot like the original.

Have wondered if A.I.P. ever considered keeping Eric Von Zipper's character going in more movies, when they switched to biker films from the beach movies in the late '60s. When I watched the video of Giggens doing "Surfin' ", another video came up, by a young group of guys calling themselves the Reo Brothers. Their video is about five years old, and they do a nice version of "I Get Around". Don't know if you're aware of them.

      Thanks for the feedback, Mike! As I mentioned, I had a great time in L.A. and can't wait to get back again. Of course, we eventually moved to Michigan. For us, we found ourselves staying home most of the time because traffic was such a hassle. As you mention, there was also the cost of living. Specifically, for us, it was the dilemma of either staying in a crummy, but nicely located, apartment or buying a house we could afford someplace farther out of town which would have meant a big commute in heavy traffic twice a day.
      The pace in Michigan suits us (and my wife, born and raised in L.A. has done a great job adjusting to snow) but we still love to visit California whenever we can! Always great to hear from you, Mike! Thanks again!

    I enjoyed immensely both your "on location" LA videos, Steve. Quite coincidentally, I am now in the LA area right now for a few days and visited the Monument last night! Any other suggested sites to visit while I am here? I'm staying in Torrence which is right next to Hawthorne. Drove to paradise cove last night but it was not worth the exorbitant charge to park by the time I got there as it was just past sunset. Did you attempt to find the Love family residence? Agree with you that the Murry document is not
    an appropriate artifact to display in that manner.

      Great that you're In L.A., Chris! I didn't go to "Mount Vernon & Fairway" but that might be an interesting stop. I think the house looks much as it did "back in the day." If you happen to be in Hollywood, you might enjoy the hand prints on the Rock Walk at the Guitar Center. That was my favorite of the stops I made. (Parking on a side street off Sunset shouldn't be too hard.) Also, if you're a music collector, Amoeba Music on Hollywood Blvd. is one of the best stores in the country (and now offers validated free parking in the parking garage under the building.) I know it's a long drive from Torrance up to Hollywood, so it probably isn't worth the trip unless you're going to the area for something else. Sorry to hear the Paradise Cove visit was a let-down! I thought about going out there, but couldn't fit it in on my trip. Anyway, have a GREAT time and thanks for the comments!

      My apologies for the delay- I’ve been crazy busy since I got back from LA. I wasn’t able to make it to the handprints attraction but I did make it to Hollywood, West Hollywood, swung by (but not in) the famous Troubadour club (the line was out the door on a Wednesday night), went up on Mulholland drive and saw some gorgeous overlooks, then came down into the neighborhoods of Laurel canyon and explored, found Joni Mitchell’s house and the Canyon store. That area is breathtaking! I’ll probably be going back next year and hope to check out some additional sites.

    Another great video, thanks Steve! I keep forgetting to comment on the "spin round to other camera" move like classic news shows. It's a great touch I have not seen any other youtuber do! Do you actually shoot these on twin cameras and do those in one take and then edit them or do it once, film the spin and then move the one camera into position for picking up?
    Also the Annette ska song has got me wondering: do you know if her one or "The Jellyfish" by Neil Sedaka was first? It was a surprise to me big time to hear Neil doing ska when I first heard that 20 years ago on a box set.

      Thanks for mentioning the "two camera" thing, Max! When I first talked to Giggens and David Beard, they both had a laugh over that, though they also said it had become part of "my style." Truthfully, I'm only using one camera and use the "two camera" effect, basically, either when I've forgotten what I'm going to say next or to emphasize a transition. (Usually, it's because if I go any further, I know I'll mess up.) On a more minor note, changing angels allows me to show all the records in the three cubicles behind me. There are some viewers who like to see it they can "spot the theme" in the background each week.
      Much thanks for mentioning, “The Jellyfish,” which I didn’t know about. I just gave it a listen on here on CZcams. Very cool and very “ska” with the choruses still being, unmistakably, Neil Sedaka. I did a little checking and I understand it’s from the movie “Sting of Death” released in October, 1966. I’m not sure how long before that the song was recorded but, with Annette’s album being released in August, 1964, I would guess that “Jamacia Ska” came first. I’m really glad that you put me on to this! Now that I know it exists, I really want to see “Sting of Death,” which, according to the film poster I saw, features Neil Sedaka in the cast. (Sounds like the kind of thing I’d love!) I’m planning to follow up on “Jamacia Ska” in a future episode and will definitely want to talk about “The Jellyfish” with “props” to you, of course, for having let me know about it.
