It's crazy to think that at one point PTSD was considered to be battle field cowardice. I hope that one day veterans will be treated with love, companion and patience as they should.

These guys were beyond modern terms of PTSD, there were men who were literally paralyzed and blinded with fear, men who would hear the word "bomb" and run underneath tables and wouldnt come out for hours. Men would see enemy helmets and start crying, men who would never stop crying. They would lose their balance completely and some would never get it back, and the understanding at the time was that this was cowardice and treason and resulted in execution.

You’re exactly right! Those poor basterds literally lived in a hell, most of us can’t even imagine.
I watch these men in the trenches, mud up to their ankles or higher. Their buddies lying dead next to them. Massive shells often constantly bombarding them. I think the way PTSD is diagnosed today, can in no way ever be compared to trench warfare; of course there are exceptions.
I went through far, far less. My mental disorder they now call, PTSD, was a culmination of mental traumas over years. Finally, after just hearing about my shipmates on the IOWA fighting to save their ship and desperately trying to reach the men in the turret that exploded, ultimately 47 men died.
I was about 1000 miles away. When I was told, I went into shock immediately for what seemed longer than an hour. My mind was simply full, no longer able to function probably.
I’m not proud of this happening to me, but how could I have avoided? Most times people just break, with little to no warning, beforehand.
The one symptom, that was the most difficult was: the very real feeling of losing my mind. I could feel my mind leaving me, and used to hit myself to try to stop this horrible feeling; didn’t do a lot of good, but for a moment the pain distracted me from my mind living in hell.

There was a french tactic that there would be spies near the german trenches and would report that new recruits had arrived to the front and at night they would fire an artillery barrage to scare the crap out of the new soldiers who hadnt seen war yet and would get shell shock (PTSD) and would be executed for desertion or cowardice

When i was a kid we used to play in the woods. Right before leaving the street in entering the wood, the last house on the street was a man that used to scare the hell out of us. He sat in a rocking chair with this big crazy afro, rough beard, and a blank big eyed stare. Of course we used to run our asses off as soon as we came close to his house. As we got older we learned that he was a shell shocked vet.

@@policis it's not just for soldiers, you could be apart of a car accident with your life long friends where everybody dies and you can't bare being in cars ever again or even on the road
yeah, soldiers get it the worst because their job is literally killing other people who are trying to kill them, aka serving their country, but that shit happens for other people
and, also, not every soldier has PTSD, my dad was a special forces sgt in Algeria which used to be a military dictatorship and he saw a bunch of action (primarily w/ counter terror where people fucking blow up) and yet he's fine
im not trying to disregard soldiers because obviously they have it the worst like you said, seeing their brothers in arms dying and seeing death everyday, but PTSD can happen to everyone because everyone can have super traumatic experiences, even if, compared to a soldier, it's just another day in combat

This honestly proves how needless and detrimental war is. If no one fought this intensely she’ll shock would have never been a thing and ptsd could have been discovered at earlier stages and treated. We as humans are NOT meant to see massive amounts of death, especially possibly on the daily. Absolutely disgusting and heartbreaking.
