- At last, the new prototype Legend Hobby AD-5 Skyraider flies!! I believe that this is the first one of this kit to fly in the world and she's an absolute sweetheart! The looks, the flight characteristics, it's pretty darn awesome. My landings still need work, but I'm happy! :) #AD5Skyraider #MaidenFlight #RCWarbird

Battery 🔋 technology has really improved RC aeromodeling (especially scale warbirds) since there's no screaming IC engines, smell, greasy mess or the poor reliability issues. Beautiful model 😍

Thanks! You know, the cost is really in the model itself for this sized model. As you get larger, trailers start to become necessary for transportation. For me, I stick with models I can transport in my van and this one, the way it breaks down makes transportation simple and setup at the field quick. Otherwise, storage is a matter of what one can fit in their garage. 😆

There’s a sound system in the airplane. I have a video in the works that talks through that.

Beautiful Chris! how many amps does this setup pull at full power?? I have a power 360 (180KV) looking at the same prop
I honestly don’t recall the current draw, but it’s over 100. I did a bunch of calculations and the 160kv really was the best fit for that prop. Every case with 180kv pulled a too many amps.

My primary fdm printer is the Prusa Mk3s. It’s is a great printer…so great that I have 3 of them. 🤣

For the radio, I’m running the Spektrum 12ch power safe receiver with 2x 3000mah life packs, no bec. Honestly, I would not trust a bec for a model this large or powerful.

So I’m not an RC flyer but am curious about the sound at startup and taxi versus flying . Is this an electric motor with recorded combustion engine sound ? Unreal sound while stationary .
The model is electric powered and has a sound system in it. It’s on in flight too, but the way I have it installed you don’t really hear it in flight unfortunately. I need to reconfigure it to get better sound from it there.

I purchased and in short order lost a couple of drones when I was showing off and between that experience and my diminishing reaction time because of increasing age , I think I’m relegated to watching you from the sidelines . Looks like a blast ! Great hobby/passion/pursuit !
Honestly, you’re never too old to start IMO. The key is to get connected with a local club and get some flight instruction. Trying to learn on your own is pretty difficult. Also, there are some fantastic simulators now which are extremely helpful for learning. Crash once in the simulator and it’s paid for itself.

Hey Chris! a hobby shop in my area is selling the base model for 800 bucks plus 450 for the retracts! Can you tell me how wide the middle section is when the outer wings are taken off? Just to make sure I can get it in the car. I will also build the sock it to em because i build the tamiya kit years ago and its still sitting in my shelf. That was one of the first plastic kits i build when i restarted with the hobby so I hope you understand that I not try just to copycat you :D Thx for all your amazing videos! It really pushed me over the edge to dive head first back into Rc. I was just putting along with the one or the other e flite foamy... which are nice, dont get me wrong... but they just dont have the presents like a 2 m plus Skyraider chugging at you fully loaded. These come covered in the colors shown as well as camouflage and gray over white.
What was the total weight of the plane for flight?
Honestly, I haven’t weighed it. I’m guessing around 30lb
total cost of this model???
It’s between $3000-$4000 for everything roughly.

@The RC Geek didn't get to attend as my real job had scheduling conflict, and I hadn't seen any real flying video from the show so I thought I would ask.
Yeah, there wasn’t a huge flying contingent, but we were there having a good time.
how much of the sound is real
I haven’t dubbed in any sound if that’s what you’re asking. The model has a sound system in it which gives the startup and shutdown sounds. 😊. It’s going for the whole flight, but it’s not nearly as loud in the air as it is on the ground. I’d need to open it up and place screens over the speakers in the cowl for the speakers to allow the sound through better.
That thing is begging to be a gasser!
It goes well on gas. I would have considered that if it didn’t require hacking up the cowl for the engine cylinder. And the cowl diameter’s too small for the appropriate sized radial.

Electric in that bird is unforgivable
Hahaha! The cowls pretty small, so an appropriate radial doesn’t fit and so I’d rather have an intact cowl installation than having an unsightly cylinder and spark plug popping through. 😆. Just my preference.
