RC Warbird Sound System Installation Guide - How's it Sound??

  • I've installed a couple of the Model Sounds Inc. sound systems into my Legend Hobby A-1 Skyraider RC Warbirds and so thought I'd put together a quick video on the installation. A sound system is a really cool feature to have and on the ground it sounds great! There are some things to consider for getting the max sound out of the airframe which I touch on in the vid. So, what do you think, does it sound real?? #SoundSystem #RCWarbird #A1Skyraider

    To increase sound volume, you need to builds an air tight chamber behind each speaker. The sound waves from the front and the rear of the speaker cone are currently trying to cancel out the each other. Try this, you will be amazed at the increase in volume. I have been installing sound systems in model locomotives for many years. Larry

      This. Speakers will also have a "fuller" sound with better bass. Doesn't even have to be perfectly airtight, just a baffle to block some of the front and rear sound waves mixing will net noticeable results. Both speakers can use the same enclosure if they are in phase.

      @@kingcosworth2643 Great idea, they also tend to come in oval shapes that will be an easier fit for most fuselages.
      I've also been pondering using exciters/transducers instead of speakers, this will turn the whole airframe into a speaker. Should work particularly well with hollow composite fuselages. Also takes up much less space than a speaker.

      What if he reversed the polarity of one of the speakers? that way instead of both pushing and pulling against each other, they are working in tandem pushing air left and right?

      @@krupert8355 In a completley open baffle system like this, it wouldn't make much difference. I'm not even sure if it would be slightly better or slightly worse, although it would be an easy enough experiment to try out. The cancellation occurs mostly at low frequencies.

    Your plane looks fantastic! I really love what you did with the dummy radial and it sounds great too.
    I would be happy if I could keep my foamy Cessna in the air. Trying to teach myself to fly is expensive. I got a great simulator that even had my exact plane, but I kept crashing & after six months we had to upgrade our computer. Guess what, the simulator no longer works. It needs an upgrade too. I haven't even tried to fly in several years. It is embarrassing to spend time & money on a plane only to crash it 7 minutes after you get to the park.

    I might be wrong, but I think if you reversed the speaker leads on one of the speakers the sound might be improved. My reasoning: the two speakers would be in phase if they were pointing in the same direction, but since their directions are reversed they are 180 degrees out of phase, producing some sound cancellation.

    Great Video Bro, One of your better. Now what these sound systems all need is a way to get the Electric motor to turn over slowly thru 12 to 15 blades (like the full scale big radials) with the Sound of the starter whine and popping of Individual cylinders firing. That would be realism to the max. Now what about the Big Engine SMOKE on start up??? Think that would be way too much to ask for?

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  Před 2 lety

      Thanks man! The outrunner motors tend to start right up. However, gwith earboxed inrunner motors you can coax into a slow start up due to the drag of the gearbox. You did a great job with this SkyRaider, is it available yet? Most of my prop warbirds are the 1600-2000mm foamies so always used the transducers. Recently built out the Extreme Flight FW 190 "Red Tulip" and after seeing this video when it came out, wanted to try the Model Sound speakers. Unfortunately, the 4" speakers were too large, went to the 3" speakers but they're waterproof and much heavier. Still flies great and the sound is far superior including the 13 & 20mm cannons. Did ultimately put openings for sound under cowl and mid fuselage after David kinda threw you under the bus and said "don't follow Chris" when I suggested if no holes were good enough for you so I would defer to the Master! 🤣 Don't feel bad though, I suggested some reprogramming on his start up sequence that I had to do with a Castle ESC that didn't work right using his method and he told me to basically go fly a kite. 😉

    Two speakers in series means that you double the impedance, which means you half the output ... what was the impedance (ohms) of the speakers? Do they have sound systems for helicopters? And what does it sound like in a fly by? You didn't show a fly by...except for the Corsair...

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  Před rokem

      Yep, model sounds has sound systems for most all vehicle types including helis. When installed in a way that allows the sound to escape (unlike what I did here), it should be quite audible flying by. Since I have the speakers closed up in the cowl, it’s not super audible in flight other than on final approach at low throttle settings.

    Why not cut some slits in the cowling in front of the speaker and then add some mesh netting inside for aesthetics?

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Yes, that is an option. The installation here is far from ideal. The ideal install would be in the wings facing downward with a screen mesh covering the speakers.

    The very best sound system is an actual engine! I still prefer glow over electric for the realism and the fact that wiping it down after flying gives it a nice shine! Electric loses power as the weight remains the same. Glow loses weight as the power stays the same. When electric makes it's way to General aviation, I believe that fact alone is going to kill a lot of people. Imagine trying to fly at gross weight over the mountains as power begins to decrease! Scary thought! You will have to decide who to throw out!

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  Před rokem +1

      Yeah, as I mentioned you'll never be able to replace the sound of an actual engine, especially a Moki radial, but it does well for what it is. I will say, I don't miss the sound of glow, but I do miss the smell! ;) Electric in GE is a whole other story though. When you look at sizing an all electric man carrying aircraft, it really doesn't make a lot of sense as the battery weight heavily drives the design since it's a HUGE part of the overall weight.
