    The first Muslim person in space was Royal Saudi Air Force pilot Sultan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in 1985 aboard the United States shuttle Discovery. He was followed up by the first Muslimah in space, Anousheh Ansari, who, upon immigrating to America from Iran in her teens subsequently got a degree in electrical engineering and computer science and then, not long after, cashed in her life-savings to co-found Telecom Technologies Inc.

    it is worth mentioning that the intention is the priority, Muslims often pray on airplanes and on the back of their camels to whatever the direction it is facing; it is a special permit during travel.. also Muslims are allowed to pray to any direction as their best guess, if they are not sure where the Kaabah (Kiblat) is at..
    as for the last city ruling, this has been followed since Muslims went to the arctics where the day and night last 6 months or so.. this is NOT a recent new thing..
    and finally, Muslims are encouraged NOT to fast when traveling, whether you are on space, on an airplane or on a bus.. however they are encouraged to replace those days with fasting or feeding the hungry.. AFAIK..

    I think Dr. Abdali said it best. If you’re more focused on doing the prayers and fasting correctly rather than the meaning behind them, you’re missing the point of the ritual entirely. It’s the thought that counts

      @silverdeathgamer2907 Před 6 lety +34

      Islam contains many sects with many different beliefs some of which are highly oppressive and should be criticised, however only a fool assumes all Muslims have the same beliefs, the main problem is wahabisim and terrorism related to that(often sponsored by Saudi Arabia who also still behead people but yet people ignore that and pretend they are a great friend to the west). Religion does not determine morality your upbringing and the scenarios you encounter and the information you obtain throughout your life does.
      I am agnostic and let me say this ANYONE who uses their religion to justify violence or selfish or otherwise unethical actions should be criticised.
      Also calling people you disagree with SJWs makes you equally as childish and idiotic as the segments of the other side who call everyone they disagree with nazis.
      The problem with the holy books of the major religions is you can use them to justify ANYTHING when it comes to religion few people are literalists(fundamental hypocritical psychos usually imo) therefore it is the interpretation that is most important.

      Auren There is no "it". Just like there isn't a single form of Christianity. You can't reform Islam, because Islam is already broken up into individual interpretations of the Islam.
      Your suggestion for reform of Islam makes as much sense as saying that Abrahamic religion is in need of reform. There's simply too many ways to be this thing for your accusation to be applicable to individual believers.
      Also, your comment has nothing to do with the OP.

    I have a Muslim convert in my family. When he visited me in California along with a Muslim friend he asked me at sunset which direction was East as we were driving. I stopped the car at a rectangular city park on a North/South grid where they both found a quiet spot and began to kneel toward the East. His friend then rose and they both changed their direction to North East. Out of politeness I did not ask, but had to presume that the friend wanted to use the Great Circle method for a more accurate direction to Mecca from where we were.

      @mkobd Před 6 lety +26

      some people say you cant pray inside a car if its moving because technically you can very easily just stop it on the side and pray properly. Others would agree with you, as would I. The prophet basically said that when given two paths to the same goal that theres no need to take the overly complicated one if the simple one works fine and your intent is good (ie fasting while travelling vs making up the fast after your travels are done, both can be done but the second is easier)

    I remember an Ender's Game spinoff where Muslim students at Battle Academy had to figure out where to pray (which is one step more complicated than on the ISS, since the Academy is a _rotating_ space station). Card's solution was to have them pray facing the Sun, which...well, I can't blame him for not knowing the results of a conference which happened well after he published his book, but I somehow doubt he asked a Muslim friend for their best guess. "The Sun" doesn't sound like a good approximation of Mecca to me.

    • @kevinbooth-

      Once you're interstellar, it's about as accurate as you'd get. Praying toward Sol would be the best approximation, as the level of accuracy available for a human body at that distance makes any attempt at greater accuracy, when outside the solar system, worthless and likely to cause greater degree of inaccuracy due to calculation errors than not.

      It is actually a fundamental part of Islam to evolve according to new situations. It is called Ijtihad. For example, blood transfusion was not a thing back then so there is no ruling by the Prophet on this issue therefore musim scholars had to sit with scientists to determine whether such thing would be permissible in Islam or not. On the other hand drinking alcohol is explicitly forbidden in Islam by the orders of Quran and the Prophet and no kind of evolution in Islamic thinking can change that.

    Simon, I take back everything I have said. Your pronunciation of the Arabic names and words was spot on flawless. And adding the High Flight "I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth" by John Gillespie Magee, Jr. reference to Reagan's Challenger eulogy was a nice touch. It's one of my favorite poems. Kudos to you and your research department.
    "Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
    And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
    Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
    of sun-split clouds, - and done a hundred things
    You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
    High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
    I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
    My eager craft through footless halls of air....
    Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
    I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
    Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
    And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
    The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
    - Put out my hand, and touched the face of God." - John Gillespie Magee, Jr

      Not sure if you are taking the piss or not but. Underwater the pressure is greater on the body. When you hold your breath you also have the " weight " of the water trying to force the air out. Something you don't have when above water.

      The pressure of water suppresses the air inside your body. That's what makes it harder for you to hold your breath in the water.

      Actually there are several myths regarding it in a number of faiths and most religions are less about finding god and more about being in tune with the world around you both seen and unseen. Basically the idea that things are set in stone in religion comes mostly from puritans and other Protestant beliefs systems. A shamanist on the other hand might treat an asteroid with the same respect as a mountain on the ground. A helenist would likely worship the gods of earth and mix their beliefs with others wherever they landed.
      I worship a being represented by the moon, what do I do if I leave to live on mars? Appeal to the beings there and find a patron there. Space is more of a problem for Protestants of the Abrahamic religions. Orthodox and catholic Christians are pretty good with space, and so is Islam.

      The Quran is an interesting old book, many of the ideas were copied from older scriptures like Christianity. A lot of the old books are very interesting and do contain wisdom that still rings true today.
      Of course they were all made up by man though, that is glaringly obvious. Nostradamus predicted stuff that came true, was that because he had some divine power? No, he used logic, imagination and common sense.

    So hang on a second, if according to Christianity (and perhaps Judaism as well) aliens don't exists, then how come aliens are fine according to Islam. Considering that all three of these religions are Abrahamic religions, I am assuming that all three would have similar ideas about extra-terrestrial species. By the way I am not mocking or joking here; this is a legitimate question. I am also pleasantly surprised at how flexible Islam is when it comes to space travel.

      Icarus I’m not sure about Aliens and Islam. But what Islam in fact mentions in the holy book (Quran) is the existence of different dimensions. The existence of 7 dimensions is mentioned in The Sura (الطلاق, 12). But god did say that he shall allow us explore his vast and many creations in the universe. So, who knows, Aliens might be one of them. Only god knows

      Icarus The Catholic Church has no official stance on aliens, however it doesn't seem to contradict the teachings of the Church. Aliens would still be creatures of God since God created all life. If they were intelligent, then you would have the question of whether they have a soul like ours? If they did, then they would also be susceptible to sin and would need to be saved. These are all what ifs of course.

    • @thedarkwolf6967

    • @bosnakedisniksic

      PitiedIndiana 12 In Islam it is believed that those who do not know of Islam or were only exposed to a warped idea of it, then they are not held responsible for their disbelief. So there are no "sins" for them to be "saved" from. Also Muslims believe that Islam is for Humans and the Jinn. So if Aliens were a separate creation, then I would assume they wouldn't be held to the standard of a human centric religion.

Old ways will have to be forgotten, social divides like religion, race identity, gender bias and others need to be forgotten. Domian: Well it was really to be expected, wasn't it? After all, this was a very bizarre 'niche' hypothetical question that only would be relevevant or pertinent to those who adhere to the Muslim religion. I think that the reason for all those odd comments has to do with the fact that he's posing a highly-specific hypothetical question concerning a minority (at least in the US) belief system of which a big chunk of Simon's viewers don't ascribe to....thereby making this 'factoid' basically irrelevant and completely unrelatable or the majority of these non-muslim viewers. It would be no different than an athiest watching a video with the premise of ...... what would Catholics do if they lived on a planet with no wheat, and therefore unable to create the communion wavers???? So yeah........... I can see how one not affiliated with such a belief system can arrive at a 'don't know, don't care' attitude really quickly. And unfortunately, those who view a specific content as being totally inconsequential, insignificant, and foreign to their own world view.... are like a tiny step away from being the authors of nasty comments. I think I may have sort-of misused the word 'hypothetical'. I know that he gave a real-life example of a Muslim in space.......hence nixing the 'hypothetical' part of the arguement in the technical sense........but what I really was trying to convey is 'hypothetical' in the sense that this scenario would only possibly apply to a sub-miniscule portion of the populace, so as to make it 'virtually' hypothetical........after all.... how many muslims planning on going to space are going to have to even contend with this theological dilelmma? Just imagining a Muslim space explorer on some far away planet, having a momentary bit of panic wondering how they could possibly face Mecca, then being like: "Oh yeah, I can literally face any direction I want."

    fun fact aldrin actually said the first thing on the moon: "Contact light" when the LM landed on the moon. yes Armstrong said the first words on the surface of the moon, but think about it this way. if I am in my house and say: Crustacean Drool Cube. I said those words on earth. so when aldrin was in the LM he said Contact light meaning those were the first words spoken on the moon!

      The Qu'ran says that if something is not covered in the Qu'ran or out of date, that a good Muslim should follow the majority vote of the community. Howeverrrr, just like fundamentalist Christians, fundamentalist Muslims tend to conveniently "forget" parts such as that, which causes the problems in the Middle East

      Actually all those decisions are based on either Al-Qur'an and hadits. To face anywhere during prayers Al-Baqarah 115 and some hadits which I forgot. To do the prayers by the time he usually does it there was a hadits on which stated that during the great fitna a day will goes by like a year and then like a month and the like a week and then it returns to what we used to and someone asked how do they pray during those times, Muhammad asnwered do it like what you used to do. And these are what I know as ordinary muslims, those scholars know much more.

    Someone in a reply section of a comment said that Abrahamic Religions, including Islam, worship the Sun, it's just that our definition of God changes and I would like to correct that while avoiding pointless arguments as best as I could. First things first, we don't worship the Sun. In fact, there are certain times when it is forbidden to pray, that is when the Sun is just about to rise and when the Sun is just about to go down. This, from my experience, is to avoid from looking as if we worship the Sun, and imitation of other religions is strictly forbidden in Islam (noted that there was once a Queen who would worship the Sun during those two periods) So, it wouldn't make sense that we worship the Sun. Furthermore, if we do, we'd see the Sun as a holy thing and well, we don't. The Sun is just a burning star to us. Second, the definition of God has been pretty much the same: The creator of the Universe and all that is living (also natural non-living things like rocks and water) . It wouldn't make sense to worship the Sun if that is our definition of God. The Sun is just, you know, being the Sun. All it could create is light and heat.
    Sorry if it seems a bit short, I wanted to make the explanation as simple as possible. And forgive me if it ends up being unclear to you. If it isn't clear or there is a mistake, do tell me :). If anyone would like to add anything to it please do as well. Thank you for taking your time and whoever you are, have a good day!
