Russia had a bit of everything: good lack, playing at home and smart strategy of their game implied, plus Spain's own inability to finalize their attacks and troubles with team management.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but why isn't anybody talking about the fact that of all shots on target against Spain, De Gea managed to save 0, yes... you've read correctly. He had zero on target saves the entire tournament! How can you expect to be successful when your goalkeeper concedes everything that challenges him?

Spain won the 2010 world cup because 7 of the starting 11 were Barcelona players that knew how to play tiki taka. This is when Barcelona was still the dominant team in futbol.
In today's game only 3 of the starting players are Barcelona players and the rest (except Silva) don't play in teams that play possession futbol. Tiki Taka died when Xavi left and Spain need to change their playing style. Even Barcelona don't play like they use to anymore.
And David Via was there to score the goals and he understood their play style as well. They relied heavily on Vias 7 (I think) goals in the tournament.

Sacking your manager two days before the World Cup does not give you the best chance. They were lucky in the sense they had a straight forward group. Put them in place of Argentina with Iceland, Nigeria and Croatia or Germany with Mexico, Sweden and Korea and I doubt they'd have qualified the group.
