Really, DesChamps told his team to allow DeBruyne to get the ball in dangerous situations about 15 times and make terrible passes every time? He used his mental powers to make sure Martinez didn’t sub out Chadli (who was awful) until the 89th min?
Deschamps is all about "practical football". If it means scoring a goal, and then parking the bus on defense for the rest of the game, he will do it if it means a win. it's working for France and it's the correct strategy. It's a bit boring to watch. England kinda tried that today with Croatia after their first goal, and it didn't work out for them. De Bruyne is my favorite player, but true, he didn't play his best game against France. French defense is very good. Belgium was missing Meunier and Belgium suffered because of that. KDB and others had to fill holes. The goal was not struck by a french star. Eden Hazard was nearly player of the match. Hugo lloris got it (and it was deserved) but it shows how close the game was.
Here's how I see it. Belgium played excellent football, and I thought sometimes France was hanging by a thread. France did well on counter attacks, but it took a while for them to start moving, but they won fair and square. On the foul on Hazard... Personally I think it was a foul, but the referee had his decision made so quickly I think he saw it differently, and it was a mistake rather than bias, overall I think he did a good job. Good job Belgium, Great job France and hopefully both teams can come first and second.

He didn't jump to fight for the header and he stayed where he's not doing anything, it's called stupidity, if you can't get chances, you change the position, that would be called improvisation, people who can't adapt to circumstances on the field can easily be stopped, you play football with your head, and your body is there to support you. De Bruyne was also a disappointment, the only time he ran in the second half was in the 93th minute , when everybody is tired and all. But Hazard was fantastic, so was Courtois.

Varane is the most effective and talented center half in the world cup. Doesn't need to play dirty or cheat, he gets the job done cleanly and intelligently and transitions well with his team offense.
I remember what Cruyff said after a final they lost in 1974. Even Holland didn't won the World Cup back in 74', Cruyff still said they won the World Cup. Wanna know why? The difference between the 2 teams was France scoring from a corner, the rest is France getting advantage from counter attacks because Belgium committed men forward. They did what Belgium did against Brazil, they got a lead and setup their defence to be rock solid and made sure they didn't concede, they had 11 men behind the ball, and restricted Belgium to half chances at best. It was like playing against a tony pulis team who have a lead, you not going through them or around, and if you somehow get a goal then good for you, but it will have to be something amazing.
So Belgium did their best given the situation, the margins were very very close, that first half showed how close everything was, and team that got the lead would obviously sit on it to the end, and France did, in a set play, not even in open play, that's how close everything war, France looked good in the second half because they counted ineffectively because they still couldn't score because the margins were that close between these 2 teams
I'm Belgian and I agree, we failed. The "golden generation" won one big game, one, and that was the quarter final against Brazil. The end.

Mbappe wasted 10 seconds and the referee just got the foul on Hazard wrong in the whole match. If you think that was enough for Belgium to pull of a win, you're clearly delusional. Every team wastes time when they are a goal up with minutes on the clock. The whole of the second half, Belgium just had one chance on goal. France had about twice the number of shots on goal as Belgium in the match. Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne were completely absent. The reality is Belgium never looked like scoring, the foul on Hazard and the time wasting by Mbappe is nothing more than a red herring.
I've been following Belgium since their olympic run and the so called golden generation. they messed up every qualification, then when we finally did we hardly could win against the lowest teams and then god beaten by a weak argentina, next we lost to wales and now we met easy team after easy team and almost lost to japan. Again, we won against Brazil, which was great, but that's it.
They are all friends bc of the language (half of belgium speaks french) and the players who play there, we don't share culture more than any other neighbouring country.

They were disappointed with Belgium's performance, because they expected them to win the World cup. You have some expectations from a World cup winning team, and Belgium didn't live up to that expectations, at least in the second half. These guys need to focus more on analyzing what happened not just on the results, it's not like they've beaten Brazil comfortably and lost to France with no chance of winning...yeah Brazil 1st half was the worst team in that match, they didn't have kante (in their case Casemiro), and didn't know how to defend Belgium on the breaks, but second half, Brazil did let Belgium counter once...and all in all Brazil certainly created much more clear scoring chances than Belgium...and on the other hand it's not like Belgium couldn't have beaten France, first 20 minutes they had few near misses, plus that lloris safe after the corner...plus some near misses on headers second half, so if France scored own goal, and missed their chances it could have easily been the same story as Brazil...So what I'm trying to say is: both Brazil and France were "too much" for Belgium, it's just that these top team are matched up really closely, and even if they weren't one game anything can happen, so I wouldn't judge it as, yeah nice they've beaten Brazil, but France was too much, I would say, yeah they played good football, but they were not the better side in any of these matches so they needed a bit of luck like against Brazil, and it didn't happen for them...

Belgium was disappointing they should have sent more crosses into Lukaku and Fellaini with Chadli and Hazard taking players on out wide. Overall just bad game plan by Belgium and good execution by France to stay tight, compact and quick on the counter
