Today's video is all about one of my favourite subjects: BUTYRATE and digestive health.
I frequently recommend prebiotic supplementation to my patients with digestive health symptoms, especially focusing on butyrate production. In this brief introduction, I'll discuss the significance of short chain fatty acids, specifically butyrate, and its impact on digestive health and overall well-being.
Short chain fatty acids, including butyrate, acetate, and propionate, play a crucial role in supporting beneficial gut bacteria. Low butyrate levels can be a strong indicator of digestive health issues. To naturally boost butyrate production, I emphasise the consumption of fibre-rich foods that selectively feed the good bacteria in the gut.
Prebiotics, particularly soluble fibres like partially hydrolysed guar gum (PHGG), can be effective in promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. Stanford University's research has shed light on the importance of microbiota-accessible carbohydrates (MACs) found in certain foods, which feed the good bacteria without triggering symptoms in those with digestive issues.
Butyrate offers numerous benefits, such as reducing inflammation, supporting insulin sensitivity, and inhibiting the growth of cancerous cells in the large bowel. If you've been exposed to antibiotics or haven't seen significant improvements with standard prebiotic therapies, I may recommend a butyrate supplement to jumpstart your gut health.
Here is the most common product I will recommend (affiliate link) - Probutyrate by Tesseract amzn.to/476LZqY
At my clinic, we focus on getting butyrate levels up and then transition patients to a diet that includes functional foods like resistant starches. This approach aims to maintain a balanced and healthy gut ecosystem in the long term.

another great video, very timely!
Thanks Kathy! Glad it helped. Anything I'm missing or you're struggling with?
Great introduction to the importance of butyrate SCFA and the treatment options. I like hearing the knock on effects of (sometimes slowly) optimising different aspects of the bowel environment such as the pH. Love it 😊
Thanks Helen! You’re the best 😊
Can't wait for your prebiotic video! =)
Coming soon!
thank you sir for your videos.
Glad you like them!
Excellent video. In my GI360 test, my SCFA were all good, in the green zone and my PH was at 6.2. I did test positive for Citrobacter and Klebsiella dysbiosis, especially Citrobacter. Do you think 6.2 pH is good in this scenario or should it be lower? Thank you for all your excellent videos and your articles.
Been watching your videos non stop for a few days, totally awesome stuff, thank you! I tried taking butyrate supplement before & it seems to cause more bloating, is it possible if I have severe sibo? Thanks in advance.
I've been following you for several weeks and find all of your talks interesting. I have a serious histamine and gluten issue. Was diagnosed 7 years ago with Grave disease and have been addressing my condition with diet, mental and emotional cleansing. I seem to have hit a brick wall as currently my sleep is not good and my skin is in a constant state of itching, like my skin is crawling. It;s pretty unbearable and making me quite miserable. I live in Cornwall in the UK, I'm 66years old, I live alone. Can you direct me to anyone in the UK who might be able to help with my ongoing gut health issues that I'm unable to shake off. Thank you so much. Sian
Hey Sian, I was curious to if you had made any further progress in your journey
I love love love your videos! very informative. straight to the point. How can I take PHGG ? what doses do you suggest. Ive just finished my antibiotic treatment for sibo so. Blessing to you
Thanks for the great feedback. I would work most of my patients up to 4-6 grams of PHGG as tolerated.
How do you lower the PH of the gut?
I really like your videos and treatment suggestions for Gut health and histamine intolerance. But I live in Florida, USA. Can you suggest an herbalist in Florida that is competent and knowledgeable like you?
Thanks for the great feedback. Sorry I don't have a great suggestion for a Florida practitioner
What happens if you have Sibo as well, would you be treating the Sibo first before adjusting diet to include fibre rich foods etc to feed the butyrate microbes? I’m learning a lot from you thank you 😊
What would be a dose range for butyrate?
Byron, could you please share if butyrate can be taken on empty stomach or must be with food? Also, if I take natural herbal killer 30 minutes before food, is it still okay to take the butyrate supplement in 30 minutes?
Which prebiotics will not feed Klebsiella and citrobacter?
Sir please help reply please i am struggling with chronic paronychia from last 14 years how to cure it please suggest
Is sodium-butyrate a good option? And what about Colostrum?
Is acacia Senegal fiber okay for me to take? Or is phgg far superior? I just already have Heathers tummy fiber but stopped when I learned I had methane sibo and chronic constopation even on a high nutrient plant based whole food diet. Thank you for any reply and for your videos bringing health back to my life!
Thanks for the great feedback! Acacia fibre can be helpful. I find it is a tad more constipating in most so go low and slow!
If I'm not mistaken when sibo was just called IBS, there was acacia fiber supplements that became popular but didn't seem to work well for me. I like phgg. Just my personal experience
Hi Dr Byron, I have a question, for a person have diarhea with butyrate and guma guar or GOS, what can I do? Because I have hydrogen SIBO prone to diarrhea and loose stools :( Thanks for the info`s !
PHGG and probutyrate may help. Herbs are a must for my patients here and tailored probiotics can really help
Any good PHGG recommendations? Is this the same as Xatham Gum?
Where is the prebiotic video!? lol, would you ever use inulin in your clients/patients who have a good tolerance? I’ve heard it can be not so selective and feed some of the opportunistic bugs as well.
Hi, thank you for the video.
I'm now on antimicrobial protocol and taking guar gum 5g every day, too.I tolerate it well. Do you think it's a good idea to try incorporating psyllium husks for a double effect😅 If so would you advise to take them at the same time or at another point of the day? I really feel like the guar gum helped me a lot.
I see more of an issue in some with psyllium husk. PHGG seems to be better tolerated by most. So glad it's been helpful!
@@ByronHerbalist thank you for your thoughts. Will be cautious about the psyllium.
Is sodium butyrate ok to take in place of butyric acid? Same same or not as effective? Appreciate your content 🙏🏼
thanks! I find this less effective for most.
Love love love your videos! Very helpful! Wish you were seeing U.S. patients😂❤
I wish too! Reach out we've got a great referral for you
I have been on two different types of butyrate, one is plain butyrate, the other is a bacteria that makes butyrate. I also try Atrantil. I also try prokinetics called Motility Activator.
I'm beginning to think SIBO is more of a liver problem rather than a digestive problem. I have fatty liver, for example. The bloat I'm having is probably from mega-hepatic rather than just hydrogen dominant or methane SIBO.
I read somewhere that a Dr has his fatty liver patients fast for two days and that's usually enough to reverse fatty liver. Dont quote me on that. Do the research. I'm trying a Moritz liver flush which some argue that it's not stones but just stools that turn green from olive oil. So idk if it's stools or stones but some people report energy increase from doing it so I figured I'd try, also if you have liver flukes, myrrh was studied and shown that dosage used got rid of 88-94 percent liver flukes. Again not a licensed anything, just what I'm trying and what I may try next
@@dprice81 I did the liver-flush twice, in three week. First time, no problem. Second time, left me with gallbladder ache that lasts to this day -- nearly 3 years later.
@@Diogenes-II ouch. I'd trade ya for an achy gallbladder. Mine was removed in 2015 so I guess I'm not likely to have gallbladder pain from it but maybe there will be phantom pain
@@dprice81 So sorry to hear. Extrahepatic stones caused gallstones. Intrahepatic stones causes liver stones. There is still liver stones even if your gallbladder was removed. There are good herbs for the liver's health:
- Liver Formula by Banyan Botanicals
- Kutki Supreme by Harmony Nutraceuticals
- Artichoke Extract
@@Diogenes-II Then do another one. The stones come forward from the liver with each flush you do. I did several in a row, spaced about one to two weeks apart about five years ago. The last flush gave birth to a stone the size of a walnut. I couldn't believe it. I never did another one after that because I felt so clear afterward. But, yes inbetween the series of flushes, I would get aches and nausea, so I knew I wasnt done yet. I am healing from severe mold exposure.
Can kids take Probutyrate? Do you use Clark's Rule to determine dosage? Thank you!
I've prescribed butyrate to children but am quite cautious around very young children with most therapies. I like Clark's rule for dosing too
Hello new guy here ,
My appendix was taken out over a decade ago any thoughts on that
Going through alot ,but doing alot to be me
Hmm depending on symptoms I’d focus on microbiome support (herbs, prebiotics, probiotics etc)
Can you do a video on treating high clostridia markers?
Yup. I treat this commonly. Let me put a video together on it!
@@ByronHerbalist awesomeness!
So if I understand you, this can be taken with probiotics? I'm presently taking horopito for 60 days. I will try this when I'm done with that. Yes?
with probiotics is fine for most :-)
Thank you for your response.
When are you going to start to work with international patients that can do their own testing from their own countries???!!!
It seems like he maybe busy enough with in country clients not to need to extend and making videos is his way to extend help internationally, although we don't have the clinical experience to evaluate labs and symptoms the way Todd does
I’ve done carnivore for 18 months and it has reversed 90% of my issues with 12 year suffering with Crohn’s diseases. I only have frequent diarrhea otherwise my weight and strength have improved among others. What can I do?
just working on a Crohn's disease case study now. Stay tuned!
@@ByronHerbalist I’ll hit the notification button 👍🏻 looking forward
I wish you would help people overseas
Can phage therapy help sibo?
I'm sure it could help. I don't have much experience here as it isn't available in Australia.
they had a hard time peelin that garlic in the video......
lol!
Que cosa más bonita. Creo que me he enamorado
