Same here. I think there’s something to be said for those Nerdfighters who simply feel a strong connection to the Green brothers, even if they don’t participate much.
I could have bought the first ticket to VidCon. I was watching as soon as the video uploaded and I immediately clicked the link. I had the money. I wanted so badly to take the risk, but I young child and I didn't want to be away even for a couple days. I wonder how my life would have been different if I had gone on ahead with it.

Same here! I joined around 2011 when I was living in the Japanese countryside, which was incredibly isolating at times, and any notifications from Vlogbrothers made it felt like I had a friend in the room.
It reminds me of the repetition of "alive" in the Googling Strangers episode of AR. We are alive with all our weird hobbies and interests and worries and relationships. ALIVE.

So if you just take "Schaden", that means damage. It's funny because you'd expect the phrase to go "Schadenfreunde is an overrated joy", but also "einen Schaden haben" (lit. to have a damage) is colloquial for being crazy/unreasonable about a certain thing. So it kind of fits after all. (Now I've probably over-explained, but I hope it makes sense!)
Every time I watch a Vlogbrothers video, I thank the universe that my friend introduced me to you in late 2007. The community is thriving and we appreciate everything you do for us, for one another, and for the world.
I first found vlogbrothers through scishow in 2012 as a 12 year old in 6th grade. Now I'm a senior in college and vlogbrothers has definitely been the culture I am most proud to have grown up with.
I feel like "popularity is not the goal" is one of the best lessons I learned from my nerdy youth. I very much wish this lesson was much more widely known.
Nerdfighteria is one of the few online communities I am a part of that truly feels like a community. Thank you to all nerdfighters for that, and thank you to John and Hank for truly caring about nerdfighteria and always prioritizing the feeling of community over other less important measures.

"Smallpox was" really are the sweetest words. I've been learning so much about the smallpox vaccine lately (both from you and from Sawbones), and it's left me in awe of both how fragile we are and what humanity can do together.
If you're really into smallpox I'd recommend the book The Relentless Moon by Mary Robinette Kowal. Its premise is basically what if there was a smallpox outbreak among astronauts on the moon. It was the first time I ever fully grasped how terrifying life could be before the smallpox vaccine and captured how deadly the disease was perfectly.
I usually would be “manifest radical empathy” because it’s my general goal everyday as someone who works with children, but since I just woke up I’m feeling more like “rocks”.
I love how inclusive this community is, I'm not incredibly active in many projects/discords but I've always felt welcome. It's a very pleasant space on the internet.

My absolute favourite videos from this channel are the one that you made about 3 farmers on their way to a dance, and the one hank made about the Great goose migration. They might not have gained huge views, but they've certainly gained repeated views from me, and they have certainly changed my world, by adding wonderful value to it.

Been watching your videos since 2008 and I gotta admit that if I could go back in time and spend my time doing other things besides being apart of this community, I wouldn't change a second of it. This community is one of my absolute favorite things on the internet and it fills my heart up with so much love and joy.
I think the community is doing well. I joined here several years ago and then left for a brief time because I could never find the community portion. Then The Art Assignment happened and not only did I make friends, but I made the best friends that I now have. I am incredibly grateful for this community. I am glad I returned all of those years ago.

it's crazy what this community has meant to me - i fell out when i was in a relationship that pretty much destroyed my core belief system and in the years of building that backup, i've refound y'all and it has felt like coming home. especially in the last year - i don't interact much with the community anymore (i've lost my zeal for internet friends that i had when i was junior high school and absolutely living for nerdfighteria) but this past year, you have made the aloneness that can be so suffocating just.... less suffocating through videos and live streams and just honesty.

I have been a part of this community for over 10 years. Now that I take care of a small human full-time, I don’t have the energy or time to participate in as many community-building activities, but I still really like reading these comments twice a week.
Honestly, as a relatively new nerdfighter but a long time general youtube user , the comments section of this channel is easily and immediately one of the best. This amount of meaningful exchanges are extremely hard to come by in a youtube comments section. Also, in terms of community apart from the comments, from what little I have observed, I think I can say that nerdfighteria is a testament to the potential of youtube as a platform. Important to note is such a community is a direct reflection of the effort being put into the content, so great going and thank you John, Hank, their team and the rest of Nerdfighteria 😁👍
I don't comment on videos a lot but I've been part of nerdfighteria for almost ten years starting when I was in middle school. It's been wild to come of age alongside an internet community. Hi John! I've casually watched vlogbrothers for years now, but only recently have started watching every video and participating in the comment section. Probably because being quarantined at home for so long gives me time to stop and think about whatever it is y'all are talking about. for me, vlogbrothers kind of feels like home. an unexplainable feeling, really. it's like, when you're talking to your favourite author, you become more and more a part of their life, while becoming more and more close to the book they wrote too.
I love this community and I love growing with this community. The coolest thing that’s ever happened is being able to facilitate a donation to P4A while I was working my first job. Second coolest is being an older person on Tik Tok watching kids learn about y’all and finding the community.

i joined nerdfighteria circa 2014 when tifios came out, largely because i wanted to participate in that pop culture moment. i was a freshman in highschool when i binged all of John's books and throughout those 4 years, i relegiously watched vlogbrothers videos as they uploaded and worked my way through the brotherhood 2.0 backlog. i mostly fell off when i went to college, but recently rejoined a couple months ago after graduating; looking for a new podcast, i thought i would check out the anthropocene reviewed. i was reminded of what made me so invested in nerdfighteria during my high school years. the values of being kind and thoughtful and caring, promoted in every project John & Hank work on, became important to me. Also, Nerdfighteria was probably my first fandom experience and it really helped me figure out how to engage in online communities in a way that is healthy & fufilling. i really credit this community for helping me figure out how to grow up back then. and now, as I'm figuring out how to be an "adult," it's been such a joy to return; the podcast and the quarantine backlog of vlogbrothers videos have been immensely helpful in trying to make sense of the current world. so thank you to nerdfighteria for existing and for helping me figure out how to exist. - dftba

Long time lurker here - I never normally comment much on videos, but I really value this community. Not because of any personal connections, or even necessarily shared interests (although there are plenty of those) but because of that 'something else'. CZcams as a whole has changed so much since I first stumbled across it as a teenager, but this channel has always felt like home. I have watched vlogbrothers from my own bedroom and from rooms thousands of miles away, and without fail these videos have made me feel a little bit safer and a little bit more myself. Hi John and Hank, I’ve been around here since around 2013ish I think. I was (and still am) very big into CZcams content. John, I read all of you books as young teenager, but I don’t think that’s how I found the vlogbrothers channel, because I distinctly remember looking at the about the author section of TFIOS and thinking “oh my god it’s the same John Green from CZcams.” And while I’ll admit I’m not too frequent of a watcher of videos on this channel, I stay subscribed because as I’ve become an adult I have a huge appreciation for the intelligence you both have and the impacts you’ve made on the internet and the lives of most everyone in my generation. In short, you are both truly awesome, and I will continue to look forward to the future endeavors you both have.

My absolute favourite videos from this channel are the one that you made about 3 farmers on their way to a dance, and the one hank made about the Great goose migration. They might not have gained huge views, but they've certainly gained repeated views from me, and they have certainly changed my world, by adding wonderful value to it.
The bottom line is that we need updates on the continuing Saga of giraffe sex.
My girlfriend has quite a long neck (challenging that of Queen Nefertiti). Does that count?

Been watching your videos since 2008 and I gotta admit that if I could go back in time and spend my time doing other things besides being apart of this community, I wouldn't change a second of it. This community is one of my absolute favorite things on the internet and it fills my heart up with so much love and joy.
I think the community is doing well. I joined here several years ago and then left for a brief time because I could never find the community portion. Then The Art Assignment happened and not only did I make friends, but I made the best friends that I now have. I am incredibly grateful for this community. I am glad I returned all of those years ago.

I think this is one of those communities that never stops being wholesome, having fun, and keeping in touch, we are united by common interests and an appreciation of understanding the world, creativity, helping others, and timeless fandoms
There have been so many times that I just clicked on the new vlogbrothers video because it was there and that 4 minute video ended up resonating with me and peaking my interest more than I could've imagined. There's a line between something surprising me and something that I know should've expected but didn't, that's where I think am. Thank you both so much. it's crazy what this community has meant to me - i fell out when i was in a relationship that pretty much destroyed my core belief system and in the years of building that backup, i've refound y'all and it has felt like coming home. especially in the last year - i don't interact much with the community anymore (i've lost my zeal for internet friends that i had when i was junior high school and absolutely living for nerdfighteria) but this past year, you have made the aloneness that can be so suffocating just.... less suffocating through videos and live streams and just honesty.

I'm so grateful to have been a part of this community for the last 9 years, and it is truly one of the most impactful and supportive online communities I've ever been a part of. Thank you for creating art that is meaningful and videos that bring me joy every week!
I have been a part of this community for over 10 years. Now that I take care of a small human full-time, I don’t have the energy or time to participate in as many community-building activities, but I still really like reading these comments twice a week.
Honestly, as a relatively new nerdfighter but a long time general youtube user , the comments section of this channel is easily and immediately one of the best. This amount of meaningful exchanges are extremely hard to come by in a youtube comments section.
Also, in terms of community apart from the comments, from what little I have observed, I think I can say that nerdfighteria is a testament to the potential of youtube as a platform.
Important to note is such a community is a direct reflection of the effort being put into the content, so great going and thank you John, Hank, their team and the rest of Nerdfighteria 😁👍
I don't comment on videos a lot but I've been part of nerdfighteria for almost ten years starting when I was in middle school. It's been wild to come of age alongside an internet community. Not much more to say but thank you for giving me a "here" to be in the past decade. Nerdfighteria has been a great place to grow up.

for me, vlogbrothers kind of feels like home. an unexplainable feeling, really. it's like, when you're talking to your favourite author, you become more and more a part of their life, while becoming more and more close to the book they wrote too.
I love this community and I love growing with this community. The coolest thing that’s ever happened is being able to facilitate a donation to P4A while I was working my first job. Second coolest is being an older person on Tik Tok watching kids learn about y’all and finding the community.

i joined nerdfighteria circa 2014 when tifios came out, largely because i wanted to participate in that pop culture moment. i was a freshman in highschool when i binged all of John's books and throughout those 4 years, i relegiously watched vlogbrothers videos as they uploaded and worked my way through the brotherhood 2.0 backlog. i mostly fell off when i went to college, but recently rejoined a couple months ago after graduating; looking for a new podcast, i thought i would check out the anthropocene reviewed. i was reminded of what made me so invested in nerdfighteria during my high school years. the values of being kind and thoughtful and caring, promoted in every project John & Hank work on, became important to me. Also, Nerdfighteria was probably my first fandom experience and it really helped me figure out how to engage in online communities in a way that is healthy & fufilling. i really credit this community for helping me figure out how to grow up back then. and now, as I'm figuring out how to be an "adult," it's been such a joy to return; the podcast and the quarantine backlog of vlogbrothers videos have been immensely helpful in trying to make sense of the current world. so thank you to nerdfighteria for existing and for helping me figure out how to exist. - dftba

Long time lurker here - I never normally comment much on videos, but I really value this community. Not because of any personal connections, or even necessarily shared interests (although there are plenty of those) but because of that 'something else'. CZcams as a whole has changed so much since I first stumbled across it as a teenager, but this channel has always felt like home. I have watched vlogbrothers from my own bedroom and from rooms thousands of miles away, and without fail these videos have made me feel a little bit safer and a little bit more myself. Thanks John and Hank and every regular commenter and all the other lurkers out there. We've made something special.
Hi John and Hank, I’ve been around here since around 2013ish I think. I was (and still am) very big into CZcams content. John, I read all of you books as young teenager, but I don’t think that’s how I found the vlogbrothers channel, because I distinctly remember looking at the about the author section of TFIOS and thinking “oh my god it’s the same John Green from CZcams.” And while I’ll admit I’m not too frequent of a watcher of videos on this channel, I stay subscribed because as I’ve become an adult I have a huge appreciation for the intelligence you both have and the impacts you’ve made on the internet and the lives of most everyone in my generation. In short, you are both truly awesome, and I will continue to look forward to the future endeavors you both have.

As a German, I can genuinely not tell whether he actually means that Schadenfreude is an overrated Schaden, which I cannot make even the typically nonsensical 2021 vision board sense of, or an overrated Freude, which I absolutely agree with.

I joined Nerdfighteria when I was in High School, and it was fun and goofy and delightful, the same way I was goofy. Now, 10 years later, it feels more....well, mature. It's a group of people who just really care about Various Things, and we show that care in Various Ways.
It's been really wonderful growing up with you all.
