    Hi. I say this in passing in the video, but I am so so grateful to everyone who has read The Anthropocene Reviewed book and shared it with friends and family. It is so cool to get emails from grandparents and the like who have no idea who I am or what a podcast is but have still enjoyed the book. SEVEN WEEKS on the nyt bestseller list is just incredible, and I am so so grateful. Also, nations are weird. -John

      i made my english teacher read it because i knew he would love it and he said he wants to give his freshman an assignment next year where they read/listen to a couple chapters and then write their own reviews about whatever they want!!! i don’t know why this made me so so happy but it did. thank YOU for this amazing book :)

All the sudden an employee came over and I thought “oh god they are going to tell me to stop being weird and going through all the books” but to my surprise they instead said “Just so you know, it’s an incredible and lovely book!”
    I then let them know that I know and that I already own it and then geeked out about nerdfighter stuff and they didn’t know about any of it. They just loved your book for what it was without the community it came from and that made me SO happy.

  • @AndreasChrisWilhelmer
    @AndreasChrisWilhelmer Před 3 lety +106

    I would argue that the "any video that weakens the sense of community is by definition a bad video" approach can be dangerous: Sometimes a video may introduce a conflict that many people disagree on and argue about. In a sense introducing conflict to your community may qualify as "weakening" it, but some controversial topics need to be discussed and should not just be ignored to keep the peace within a certain community. What matters is if a community manages to deal with such conflict in a constructive way, and how a community rearranges itself to grow stronger again once it has been "weakened".

    • @vlogbrothers
      @vlogbrothers  Před 3 lety +142

      Yeah, I agree that one must have an expansive definition of "strength." It is not good for a community (or an individual) to never be challenged or stretched. That weakens the community. I hope we do a good job of grappling with complex issues in a way that helps us and others to stretch and consider facets of experience that they may have looked past. If we don't, the community will get weaker over time. -John

    I’m enjoying reading TAR so much, John. I read some chapters to my Dad like the one about the Indy 500 and this morning I played the podcast episode about Jerzy Dudek’s spaghetti legs for him as he drove me to work. I told him about it when we watched the English goalie do the same in the Euros final on Sunday. So nice to share it with him and see him really enjoy and engage with it, thank you. It is such a gift ❤️

    One personal view I've came up with as a hobby writer:
    What tells the professional from the amateur is what each of them considers worth publishing and worth cutting.
    No one can always be great, and it takes skill, intelligence, careful thinking and a humble spirit to tell the bad from the truly good from the exceptional in your own work.
    Some of the greatest talents in their respective fields have scraped concepts that would have been very good from a mediocre point of view.
    I'm trying to adapt this viewpoint for my own projects, and try to get slowly better with cutting stuff (which I sometimes struggle with).
    That you John are so reflective and honest in your approach of cutting is something that makes me respect you even more as a creator!

    I think this is a great take on the saying "It's not about the opportunity you take, its about the opportunity you don't take". While that saying is about doing things more and taking an opportunity that you might not have taken otherwise, this is more about know what impact your choice can have on a larger community. A long time ago, Garrison Keillor wrote an essay for an International Paper ad extoling the virtues of writing letters. The line I remember best is that writing, even writing a letter to someone else, is always a learning experience, even when you just learn something about yourself. Most vlogbrothers videos are about teaching Nerdfighteria something, but as you and Hank are also both members of the community, I think it is very appropriate for y'all to have scripts that don't ever get made into videos and published.
    That paragraph ended up in a different place than I expected it to go, not unlike your comment that sometimes you don't know what you're writing until you finish it. In any case, thanks to you both, not only for the content provided but also the inspiration to write and learn something else from the video.

    This idea is so fun to think about! Vlogbrothers might be very different depending on how you judged the videos you did and did not want to publish. As someone on my own “brotherhood 2.0” journey, I wonder how my decisions TODAY might influence the shape of the community we develop, and the mark of the channel on people’s lives/the internet’s SEA of content.

      Lets do the math.
      Assuming a novel is 50,000 words, and humans speak at 200 words per minute (usually a little slower, but jump cuts help us out), and all vlogbrothers are 4 minutes long, and they have been making 2 videos per week since 2007 (this ignores that time they were doing 3 per week, or the weekday thing of brotherhood2.0, or pizzamas).
      2 per week for 52 weeks is approximately 100 videos per year. 14 years since 2007 is 1400 total videos. 4 minutes long means there has been 5600 minutes of video, and at 200 words per minute, there have been 1,120,000 words spoken. 1 million words divided by 50,000 words per book is about 20 books worth of words.
