"Dirty Work" is a simple, but emotional tune about a man who has been meeting with a married woman whenever her husband is away. She isn't going to divorce her husband, so she cuckolds him with her undercover lover, who knows that sometime or other they're going to have to pay the piper for their fun.

As a basement musician who plays along to tracks on a headset I can say it's hard to beat Steely Dan for top rate musicianship and attention to detail. They brought in all the best studio players and mixed them up depending on the song. It's where I first heard Jeff Porcaro, Bernard Purdie, and Steve Gadd on drums. The Aja album is a great listen all these years later.

Donald Fagen and Walter Becker of Steely Dan were master song writers. Their songs often involved cryptic meanings and double entendres. For example, the lyric, "Like the castle in its corner
in a medieval game". This talks about the game of Chess and the piece called a Rook, or sometimes referred to as a Castle. The Rook always starts the game in the two corners of the board and only has two moves, horizontally or vertically. This is referring to the man in this song being stuck in a corner and having limited options with his married lover. And then he goes on to say "I foresee terrible trouble,
And I stay here just the same"... Just brilliant!

An English friend of mine was a sound guy for a lot of bands through the 80's and 90's and said that Steely Dan was known as the most precise band in the biz. They would record a song over and over and over again until it was 'perfect'. They were very musically schooled. One of the most underrated bands IMO.

No you guys are missing the true meaning of this song since it was talking about infidelity in the SEVENTIES. A married rich woman fooling around with a younger guy and him admitting how much he loves her but knows she will never leave. Like a castle in the corner of a medieval game I foresee terrible trouble but I stay here just the same. A similar song Rickie Don’t Lose That Number is about a pregnant married woman Becker met where he tries to get her to leave her husband because he is infatuated with her. These were truly scandalous lyrics for the 70s. Kind of time by todays standards

The first album is even more impressive when you consider that formed in 1971 at Bard College, moved to L.A., and recorded the album in August of 1972. Of course, the musicians on the album, as well as the producer, we’re all very accomplished already.
That first album sounds like what most groups would have as a greatest hits album.

Steely Dan broke up in the early 8o's after the album Gaucho ran its course and their single, TIME OUT OF MIND cut its sharp groove on our ears. Donald Fagen, one half of their collective genius recorded a solo album called the NIGHTFLY. He released a single that dipped back in time to the 195o's when bomb shelters were a thought to be a safeguard against nuclear war. The official video has a great animation referencing popular themes and a lost innocence. Prepare your ears for a smooth kinetic ride. Enjoy.

Great choice! SD had original lead singer who sang on a few songs, and Donald Fagen eventually took over that role, which is why this song sounds a lot different than most of their tunes. "Babylon Sisters" is a great groove, hope you can react to that one. And like others have suggested "Aja" (pronounced Asia) would be appropriate, as well as the group Asia: "Only Time Will Tell".

You two need to get the Steely Dan boxed set called “Citizen 1972-80”. It’s unique among boxed sets because it has every song off of every album, which makes it a bargain compared to buying every album or cd.

I first heard this song on the movie “Mask”, which includes many songs y’all have reacted to. Love it.

Good call on a second Dan of Steel song. If you haven't noticed it yet, among things, Steely Dan's lyrics quite often tell stories.

This 1st album had this singer David Palmer on 2-3 songs, but his voice was to clean and soft. So, Donald Fagen took over because their lyrics are very street and seedy disguised as other things. If you listen enough you will get it… Badazz! Thanks y’all!

One of the best bands ever, they proved that so many times with all the wonderful songs they wrote. Their early albums were the best, just sayin' 😉

Walter Becker and Donald Fagan were crazy perfectionists in the studio. They’d hire and fire musicians every hour till it sounded jusssst right.
