"My Old School", "Josie", "Don't Take Me Alive", "Deacon Blues", "Peg", "Black Cow"....I can go on all day.
Kid Charlemagne
Royal Scam
"Rikki don't lose that number" "Kings" "Only a fool would say that" "Your gold teeth II"
David Palmer's lead vocal on this song is amazing.
Exactly right
Such dirty, dirty work but somebody's gotta do it. I remember getting a kick out of this one in high-school in 74!
Sleaz y
"Dirty Work" is a simple, but emotional tune about a man who has been meeting with a married woman whenever her husband is away. She isn't going to divorce her husband, so she cuckolds him with her undercover lover, who knows that sometime or other they're going to have to pay the piper for their fun.
More SD tunes: Kid Charlemagne, Bodhisattva, Josie, Green Earrings, Sign In Stranger, Hey Nineteen, Black Cow and so many more. You can’t go wrong with any one of their songs!
"Any major dude will tell you"..... LOL
"Night by night, "Caves of Altamira", "My old school"
You can't go wrong with Steely Dan. This is one of my fav ❤ songs from them. Actually any song they do is 🔥 "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" should be next.
I would suggest "Reeling in the years" so they can sample their rocker style, then back to the smooth stuff with "Rikki Don't Lost that Number", then "Hey Nineteen".
Peg is the greatest pop song ever.
"Peg", "Hey Nineteen" and "Black Cow" are great songs from Steely Dan.
don't forget Babylon Sisters y'all! LOL
AJA album is a must!!
Sometimes referred to as "the musicians musicians", these guys are definitely a modern/progressive jazz band, in my book.
Some of their other well-known tunes include "Hey Nineteen", "Black Cow" and "Kid Charlemagne".
As a basement musician who plays along to tracks on a headset I can say it's hard to beat Steely Dan for top rate musicianship and attention to detail. They brought in all the best studio players and mixed them up depending on the song. It's where I first heard Jeff Porcaro, Bernard Purdie, and Steve Gadd on drums. The Aja album is a great listen all these years later.
"Aja" is the signature song for all the musical production over the course of many years. It's their crowning achievement.
I agree. Aja is classic.
My favorite tune among many favorites!
Home at last , tops it for me.
Aja = sheer perfection.
This song has blown up with youngsters due to it being featured in the HBO Series Euphoria. There's even a whole Tik Tok channel devoted to Steely Dan now called Steely Dan Tok.
Whatever reintroduces this great band to people I'm all for.
BJ, versatility would be an understatement regarding Steely Dan. They’re a genre unto themselves. Just keep going song by song, album by album. You and Asia will shortly understand. 🔥🔥
Yes Asia I agree with this comment just wait until you get to the album AJA pronounced Asia. Gotta review "Deacon Blues"
Steely Dan owned the radio airwaves in the seventies...so many great songs and each one unique. They didn't just have one sound like many other bands 😎😊
I remember when they first started out… it was always a guessing game as to what their next song would sound like. They were always great, though, and they’re still good today.
70s were a great time for music, a BUNCH of bands and artists "owned the airwaves".
@@Steve-cm2ys Yes! Just 2 off the top of my head are Pink Floyd & Queen for not having just one sound.
@@lynnhoffman247 I love Pink Floyd and grew up with them in the seventies.. my all-time favorite album is THE WALL... however, Pink Floyd had a very familiar sound throughout all of their music. Whether it was Roger Waters or David Gilmour, there's no mistaking the brilliance of Pink Floyd for anyone else... Steely Dan has more variety in it's music.
@@Steve-cm2ys of course...I didn't mean it literally... simply that Steely Dan always seemed to have another hit record after another and they were always on the radio year after year in those days.
Reelin’ In the Years, Bodhisattva, My Old School, King of the World, Rikki Don’t Lose That Number, Black Friday, Bad Sneakers, Doctor Wu, Kid Charlemagne, Haitian Divorce, Black Cow, Aja, Deacon Blues, Peg, Josie, FM, Babylon Sisters, Hey Nineteen
This is a band that once you get into about 3 of their songs......hooked fans for life
Great memories of my youth!!
I was born in 1990 but because of my parents, this too reminds me of my childhood 😝
Steely Dan; my favorite group, hands down ❤️
I already commented on the song BUT I forgot to wish BJ a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!! 🥳🎉
"deacon blues" is a must listen. One of many great Steely Dan songs, and my favorite
Donald Fagen and Walter Becker of Steely Dan were master song writers. Their songs often involved cryptic meanings and double entendres. For example, the lyric, "Like the castle in its corner
in a medieval game". This talks about the game of Chess and the piece called a Rook, or sometimes referred to as a Castle. The Rook always starts the game in the two corners of the board and only has two moves, horizontally or vertically. This is referring to the man in this song being stuck in a corner and having limited options with his married lover. And then he goes on to say "I foresee terrible trouble,
And I stay here just the same"... Just brilliant!
When you listen to the latter years of Steely Dan , you may recognise some of their songs were sampled by Hip Hop artists, particularly Peg and Black Cow
Steely Dan got a huge catalog of hits to react to. Brooklyn, Deacon Blues, FM, Peg, Black Cow, Black Friday, Fire InThe Hole, Kid Charlemagne, and many many more.
Wife here...One of my favorite Steely Dan songs!!..They're catalog of music is AMAZING..And BJ you're so right...The band's versatility is off the chain..!!.."C'MON NOW.."ASIA YOU ARE TOO CUTE..YOUR SMILE is GORGEOUS!!
I've been listening to this song for 45 years and I still get goosebumps.
"Do It Again" "Deacon Blues" many more! All GREAT!
So glad ya'll are checking out Steely Dan again, they're the best. They've got a whole bunch of great songs, Haitian Divorce would be a good one to check out next.
I agree! Best vibe of the early Dan. Killer guitar work by Dean Parks, and few people know this, but the incredible talk box effects were added later in the studio by Walter Becker... awesome... Asia and BJ, BrassGuitar's definitely pointing you in the right direction, follow that vibe...
50-year old music - a true treasure
Great to see this.
Steely dan,, is heavy,, really heavy.
Great musicians.
I love Jeff "skunk"Baxter a whole lot.
But Larry Carlton, can not be ignored.
Reelin' in the Years from the same album!!!!
R.I.P. Walter...Thanks For All You Gave Us...
Gone But Definitely Not Forgotten. 🙏 ❤
one of Steely Dan's finest songs is Aja, If you like music this is a must
Steely Dan, "Black Cow" & "Aja." This song got resurgence in the film, "American Hustle." ✌️
This album is a true Classic.
You have to do “Reeling in the Years” off the same record.
You’ve probably heard it in one form or another. It was a huge hit.
My fave!!!!
I’d recommend SteelyDan’s “Don’t Take Me Alive” next.
Great great song !!
An English friend of mine was a sound guy for a lot of bands through the 80's and 90's and said that Steely Dan was known as the most precise band in the biz. They would record a song over and over and over again until it was 'perfect'. They were very musically schooled. One of the most underrated bands IMO.
One I would recommend is a song that is very underrated and one most people tend to ignore: "Midnight Cruiser". It's very mellow song about change (in a sense).
Deacon Blues is my favorite Steely Dan song. All of the songs noted below are also great
So glad you guys are dipping into the deep and glorious well that is Steely Dan! You honestly can't find a bad or even a just okay song in the bunch! I have loved them for 50 years, and was actually blessed to be able to see them this past November. Even though only Donald Fagan is left, I trusted in his perfectionism to get some fine musicians in there, and was not disappointed at all!
Steely was an all time TIGHT band. I'm not a huge fan but I have respect for days. This one and Peg are damn near perfect songs. Thanks!
SD wasn’t a band it was Becker and Fagan and a group of exceptional studio musicians which changed from album to
album
No you guys are missing the true meaning of this song since it was talking about infidelity in the SEVENTIES. A married rich woman fooling around with a younger guy and him admitting how much he loves her but knows she will never leave. Like a castle in the corner of a medieval game I foresee terrible trouble but I stay here just the same. A similar song Rickie Don’t Lose That Number is about a pregnant married woman Becker met where he tries to get her to leave her husband because he is infatuated with her. These were truly scandalous lyrics for the 70s. Kind of time by todays standards
This was from the first album and all I can say is they hit the ground running and never looked back. I recommend you start with the first song on this album and react to every song they ever did. You won't be disappointed in fact you'll be amazed.
I commend you two, you held it together quite well after the reality of the lyrics hit you. Keep up the good work.
They say Steely Dan is your favorite band’s favorite Band! They have so many great songs! You guys should listen to the song “Black Cow” from them. It’s a banger! Thanks for sharing your channel for all to see! You two are awesome!
Whenever you react to STEELY DAN, I am there, boyee!!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do more Steely Dan. Their later stuff is going to BLOW YOU AWAY!! And make us grin from ear to ear!! Black Cow, Night By Night, Kid Charlemagne
One of the very few Dan songs where the lead vocal in not Donald Fagen. This one is David Palmer, who went on to do some other things after Donald took over lead vocals 100%.
"Oh Yeah", and this is from their first album.
"Like a Castle in his corner in a medieval game, I perceive terrible trouble an stay here just the same".
Yay! My fav Steely Dan song to sing along to! All of their songs are catchy. Enjoy the dive!
The Song from this Album "Reelin In The Years" is why I started playing guitar 45 years ago. When You Two Hear you will absolutely understand why.
Skunk Baxter is amazing!
What a lovely voice you have, Asia. 🙏🏻💖🌺
A great song that came from a single artist’s songs.
Heard recently at a Steely Dan concert here in Florida.
I grew up with this band.
You can't lose if you pick up a steely dan album every album is like a new landscape everybody wins
And just think: this was their first album! You don’t get first records with that kind of polish or that kind of lyrical depth every day.
The first album is even more impressive when you consider that formed in 1971 at Bard College, moved to L.A., and recorded the album in August of 1972. Of course, the musicians on the album, as well as the producer, we’re all very accomplished already.
That first album sounds like what most groups would have as a greatest hits album.
Always great when a new Steely Dan fan is born. Takes just one listen
PEG...Steely Dan is fire!!!
MY FAVORITE sobg of theirs...no clue why. they have so many.
You guys definitely need to listen to much more SteelyDan
Steely Dan on another level of rock
"Reeling in the Years" off the same debut album is in the RRHOF as a song. A must do.
I can listen to this song over and over and over and over again.
One of the greatest albums of all time.
Love me some Steely Dan, even one of my twin 15 year old daughter loves Steely I had to buy her their CD, please react to more Steely Dan like Peg, FM No Static, and Black Cow, love from London U.K.
This is my favorite Steely Dan song since it first was released
So right about Don and Walt producing many different style, jazz, funk, fusion, rock, and blues!
One of my favorite bands. There's a whole lot good music with this band . My favorite is Deacon Blue.
Produced with excellence. Very clean , crisp sound.
1973, great album to go home to.
Roll up a spliff and relax.
Lots of love for songs from albums like Can't Buy a Thrill, Aja and The Royal Scam but what about the Katy Lied album? It's fantastic. Try "Chain Lightning" for a vibe that is just too smooth! Then check out "Everyone's Gone to the Movies" , "Daddy Don't Live in That New York City No More" and "Black Friday".
Sneaky link before sneaky links. Steely Dan, America's greatest R&R band. There's a lot of great SD songs. Do another song from this, their first album, "Reelin' In The Years", then do "Peg", "Black Cow", and "Deacon Blues" from their best album IMO, "Aja".
"Rikki Don't Lose That Number". It's tough to pick a Steely Dan favorite, but I gotta go with this one. Take care!
Steely Dan broke up in the early 8o's after the album Gaucho ran its course and their single, TIME OUT OF MIND cut its sharp groove on our ears. Donald Fagen, one half of their collective genius recorded a solo album called the NIGHTFLY. He released a single that dipped back in time to the 195o's when bomb shelters were a thought to be a safeguard against nuclear war. The official video has a great animation referencing popular themes and a lost innocence. Prepare your ears for a smooth kinetic ride. Enjoy.
Yes! One of my favorites!
My personal favorite song from Steely Dan. Y'all are too cute!
On the musical versatility angle, the first three albums they were an actual band with some guest musicians here and there along the way. After that it was pretty much just Fagen and Becker and a slew of studio aces from album to album and song to song. Again, you can straight up pick any song at random and it's going to be fire.
Tasty. Always tasty. Everything tasty. Harmonies tasty. Instrumental arrangement utterly tasteful. Feel? Tasty as.
"Can't buy a thrill" made everyone say whaa? back in the day (the day being some time in November 1972). Nearly 50 years old - but still a claimant for the title "tasty".
You're going to really like their, " Babylon sister" , " Black Cow" and "Aja" my favorite ♥
Great reaction! They are quite versatile - every song sounds different. I agree with most of the suggestions here, but I haven’t seen Dr.Wu mentioned yet. It’s so fine.
High recommend the group “ sneaker” the song is more than just the two of us. A gem from early 80’s
"Kid Charlemagne " "Josie" "Peg" i could mention another 20 but anything you do listen too next will be a gem, they are always painting pictures and telling stories with their music, one of my all time favorite bands , very intelligent music , you will never waste your time listening to " The Dan" i aggre with all the feedback , nice to see people still lovin this great music ...... it was made up of Donald Fagan and Walter Becker then they got all the best studio musicians of the time to play with them, this is a nice choice, peace
She’s gorgeous and brilliant and he’s on point.
Wow...this brings back memories...I had this album back in my teens.....wore this record out!
Your favorite band's favorite band. Including many hip hop artists. They've been sampled by the likes of De La Soul, MF Doom, Ice Cube, Kanye, etc.
BACK LIKE WE NEVER LEFT BRING IT BACKKK!!
Hey, since y'all are in north Texas you could go see Steely Dan in concert at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth in June!
You really want some musical diversity, but all built into one song? Check out Aja (pronounced Asia), and buckle up! One of Steely Dan’s (many) musical masterpieces.
This is their first album, and the only one on which Fagen does not do the vocals. Fagen did not have confidence in his voice or ability but was persuaded to try, and did the vocals thereafter. You can hear him gaining confidence and skill over their discography.
Steely Dan gets better every day 🎸🔥
You have a great voice, Asia.👍
One of the rare tracks that Donald not singing lead still one of my favorites. The Dan is a huge hole to go down but you will always be having good time And enjoy some of the best recorded engineered performed production etc
Every song is like a new Band.
Great choice! SD had original lead singer who sang on a few songs, and Donald Fagen eventually took over that role, which is why this song sounds a lot different than most of their tunes. "Babylon Sisters" is a great groove, hope you can react to that one. And like others have suggested "Aja" (pronounced Asia) would be appropriate, as well as the group Asia: "Only Time Will Tell".
"Aja" from the album "Aja" (pronounced like "Asia")!
finally on the steely dan train. Congratulations! Looking forward to more.
You two need to get the Steely Dan boxed set called “Citizen 1972-80”. It’s unique among boxed sets because it has every song off of every album, which makes it a bargain compared to buying every album or cd.
I first heard this song on the movie “Mask”, which includes many songs y’all have reacted to. Love it.
I did too. Had to have it after seeing the movie.
Good call on a second Dan of Steel song. If you haven't noticed it yet, among things, Steely Dan's lyrics quite often tell stories.
This 1st album had this singer David Palmer on 2-3 songs, but his voice was to clean and soft. So, Donald Fagen took over because their lyrics are very street and seedy disguised as other things. If you listen enough you will get it… Badazz! Thanks y’all!
One of the best bands ever, they proved that so many times with all the wonderful songs they wrote. Their early albums were the best, just sayin' 😉
My favorite Steely Dan song❤️
I love y’all’s reaction videos! I’m glad your channel exists! ✌️
Any Major Dude awesome Steely Dan song
Walter Becker and Donald Fagan were crazy perfectionists in the studio. They’d hire and fire musicians every hour till it sounded jusssst right.
