I thought it was sweet when Walter Becke (one of the founders and co-writers with Donald Fagen) died in 2018, the outpouring of respect and love that rappers poured out for him. I always thought of a Black Cow as a hangover drink, especially in the context of this song. She's been out all night "running around" and carousing, staggering home in the wee hours. The Black Cow has lots of sugar, ice cream, chocolate, root beer and probably booze. The amazing aspect of Steely Dan is that their music is timeless, always satisfying, and never grows old or stale. 50 years since their first album, they're still selling out venues, and remain the most smokin' hot live band in the business.

The beautiful piano (Fender Rhodes) in "Black Cow" was played by Victor Feldman. He recorded with many jazz greats, including Benny Goodman, George Shearing, Cannonball Adderley, and Miles Davis, most notably on Davis' 1963 album Seven Steps to Heaven, the title tune composed by Feldman and Davis. Miles Davis invited Feldman to join his group full-time, but Feldman declined, preferring session work to the career of a touring musician, such as working in the studio with Steely Dan, Frank Zappa, and others.

It was awesome for me to stumble upon your site where you all are listening to artists that I grew up with, but for YOU, were first-time events for doing so.
Watching along with you brought me a GREAT amount of joy for several reasons. Seeing a new generation of listeners taking the time to do so, well, OMG...it was like sharing these tunes with friends for THEIR first time. It made me laugh and often brought me to tears to hear how you appreciate these classic tunes as much as I.
I only wish "I" had been able to be the one who turned you on to them in the first place. :-) With each tune you watch, I feel like I am experiencing them WITH you. Thank you so much!
I know there are many people who are doing this, but there are only two sites I enjoy watching, yours being one of only two. Love your reviews, guys.

The keyboard is a Fender Rhodes electric piano. It was played on the record by Victor Feldman, a British pianist, vibes player and drummer who came to the States in the late 50s and stayed based in LA playing jazz gigs and doing lucrative session work. He was also in Miles Davis's band for a while in the 60s.

Black Cow: 10 ounces root beer (or cola) · 2 scoops vanilla ice cream · 1 tablespoon chocolate syrup · 1 1⁄2 ounces whipped cream · maraschino cherry. If it's an alcohol drink, Kahlua is normally used sans the root beer (or cola).

This is my favorite Steely Dan song. The drink is an adult root beer float. Very 70s. My dad's chainsmoking aunt used to drink these. A lot. It reminds me of her. Visiting on Sundays in the 70s. In her polyester outfits, cig in one hand. Drink in the other. Telling the most obscene jokes.

Steely Dan lead men Donald Fagen and the late Walter Becker. have been eating off this song and collecting royalties for over 45 years from 1977 / 2022 now that is impressive, how many of todays, rappers & singers will be living off the royalties from there music 45 years from now in the year 2067.

You two have many more Steely Dan songs to react to that I'm sure you'll love. As you've been told, Aja, the album, is fire. As is Royal Scam and Gaucho. All their other albums are filled with great music, but the three aforementioned are considered, by most people that I know, to be the best. Truly dive deep with this one of a kind, generational dynamic duo of Walter Becker, RIP, and Lead singer Donald Fagen. I love your reactions and can't wait to see you check out more Steely Dan. The more SD you listen to, the more samples you'll hear. Peace
