This is off their first album. At that time, Becker and Fagen were not terribly confident about their own singing and hired others to sing for them. Obviously things changed over time and Donald Fagen's distinctive voice became the norm.
I can't think of a Steely Dan song I don't like. The musicianship and production is always spot on
Peg. ugh
This got a LOT of radio play, back in the day, 1972. Little did we know then the legacy they would create for themselves in the music world over the course of decades. I don't think they knew either when putting out this first album.
Blessings.
That first album had a lot of songs on the radio back then. It was a great start.
Steely Dan is one of the most gifted bands to ever assemble. Just amazing sounds and words they created.
This is the song that made me fall in love with the Dan. This and My Old School. Then they just kept getting better. If you haven’t gotten to it yet, Kid Charlemagne will blow you away. Hope you’re feeling better Chod. ✌️
Steely Dan, one of those bands where you only had to hear the first few chords and you know exactly who it is! They hit the ground running with this great debut album.
The lyrics are incredibly good. A poem set to a pop-rock backbeat. It takes a few listens to recognize how deep that hook digs.
When Steely Dan was on VH1 Storytellers they were asked if any of their songs were autobiographical and they just laughed and said “no”.
I love rediscovering all these old songs through earbuds! I almost skipped this video, simply because it was overplayed on the radio back in the day. But I'm glad I listened; it's a whole new experience w earbuds in and Chod's swaying and ear-to-ear smile :)
Me too!
"You have sent the maid home early..." is one of the most "yacht rock" lines ever. Way before the term was coined.
This is one of the more laid-back SD songs, so you need to try the other extreme - serious jam - "Bodhisattva" It never lets up!
In a world with so many Steely Dan greats, this song gets lost in the shuffle. What a jam.
I love when you play Steely Dan!
So many excellent tunes of of that first album.. for many years I always thought the vocalist was the singer from Bread, because they sound so similar. "Midnight Cruiser" is another gem off of this LP..
That smile of yours said everything! My favorite SD song.
This was very early Steely Dan. Definitely a different vibe than much of their other songs, but still a good record. Chod, have you reacted to Aja yet? You can't say you know The Dan if you've never heard Aja.
You're right, this song does have a different aspect to it, from their other songs. To me, it kind of reminds me of a Crosby, Stills and Nash tune. Either way, this is one of my favorite songs of their masterpiece catalogue of songs. Although, as someone here in the comments referred to, how do you rate these things? All of their music is brilliant.
Can't Buy a Thrill will always be my favorite Steely Dan album.
You got to do 'My Old School'. It's got the keys you like, and a killer outro guitar solo
I have played these songs for years , but a great set of headphones opens up the music to a new level
For your next Steely Dan song, I would go with "Aja", which is Steely Dan at its jazziest. With your jazz background, I think you would like it.
Excellent! If you haven’t yet, check out ‘Only A Fool Would Say That’ from this album.
Imagine being a kid in your teens hearing this album in your friends basement for the first time. It changed my musical world. Music expanded! Loved them since the first bar.
This is my favorite Steely Dan song and I have been requesting this for ages, thank you. Great song
Donald Fagen was not the singer The singer was David Palmer who also sang 'Brooklyn (Owes the Charmer Under Me) from the same album, he also sang on some songs from their countdown to ecstasy album and was fired in April 1973 due to, as reported in Brian Sweet's bio 'Steely Dan: Reelin' in the Years,' concerns about both his ability to interpret the songs and his drinking issues.
❤️❤️❤️❤️👍
🤣I loved your analogy !
Classic album
Keep up the good work young man
The first time I heard this song, didn't know it was SD. I liked the song, took
a chance and bought the album. Been
a fan ever since. Have all their albums,
"Aja" is my favorite, however I have given
them all alot of wear. 50 years and still
listening with a little more volume. 😉
Being that you’re a drummer, I’m still waiting to watch your head explode listening to the title track from Aja for the first time… Y’need to make that one your next Steely Dan selection.
This is their song that reminds me of the Eagles.
Fagen wasn't ready to be the sole Dan voice on this first album. But their chorale sound was already superb.
I love you. This is my SONG! Thanks again
One of their finest.
I cannot tell y'all how many times this record worked their magic on women I've been with the FIRST TIME... A great ice breaker if you were a teen in the 70's. Hey, you youngins and old timers lookin' for a little action - GIVE DIRTY WORK A TRY.
Brilliant
Band, not guy. Great song.
One of the better SD tracks IMO. ✌
I have this on vinyl, it's one of my favorite albums
One off of must haves albums Can't Buy a Thrill.
Favorite song on this album!
And the channel is going to keep on growing fast as long as you keep reacting. Exponential growth, I beleive.
Please do Any Major Dude Will Tell You. It’s my fav Dan song!
Your smile says it all 😎
Maybe my favorite SD song. Smooth.
I had this album and love this song. The Pointer Sisters remade it later, and their version is terrific!
Hey Chod, lots of folks in the comment section are explaining about how the first album "Can't Buy A thrill" was Steely Dan's first. Eventually, the guys grew up and produced Aja. (Which your catalogue still doesn't have listed - you HAVE to do Aja). The songs on CBAT were raw and rock & roll. Do It Again and Reelin' were big hits. Dirty Work was an album track FM radio stations played.
I have always thought Turn that Heartbeat Over Again was a cool song. Just think....if the guys had produced Turn That Heartbeat during the Aja era. Would have been a masterpiece.
If ya want to have some fun, try listening to Becker and Fagen's early years music. Yellow Peril, Let George Do It, Mock Turtle Song and my favorite - Stone Piano. What great potential!
Thanks for helping us enjoy our favorite music with you.
Ken
New sub here.
The Dan burst into music royalty with the release of this first album.
Dirty Work wasn’t released as a single, but got tons of play on AOR (album oriented rock) stations, which were primarily college FM stations… which often had the best sound.
Back then, AM was still the prominent radio band for pop/rock music… even though it didn’t have as much fidelity as FM… which was seen as a place to hear classical music.
Anyway, this album did produce big hits - Do It Again & Reelin’ in the Years… but the ‘band’ concept they used on thls 1st album, would start to go away with their next, Countdown to Ecstasy… as they added a bunch of session musicians.
By Katy Lied, it was mainly just Becker & Fagen.
Keep up the good work!
Great tune from a great LP. Time to get back to the big 2, the Stones & the Beatles, there is so much more greatness to come from them you haven't heard yet. Psst, The Beatles, Abbey Road Medley.
One you may miss, because it's not on a steely dan album (it is on a best of though), and really just half of the duo, Donald Fagen. The song is "True Companion", on the Heavy Metal movie soundtrack. It's mainly an instrumental, with some vocals at the end, but really good.
WOW1 now I remember. Flashbacks abound. Sweet tune.
Ohhhhh that takes me back lolol....love it!!!
Their songs are very good consistently! However, I expect that of a band that was all studio, and no touring. Many bands were constantly on tour, but still found a way to put out fantastic songs at same time!
Recently read that (singer) David Palmer was brought in to sing only bc Fagen wasn't confident of his abilities live.... well, after hearing Palmer sing this I'm surprised they didn't fire FAGEN -JUST JOKING, but, Palmer's rendition is just superb! I also have a personal spot in my heart for Palmer/Steely/ read below.
PEACE Y'ALL Happy Holiday's.
If you're still reacting to music and still reacting to Steely Dan and haven't listened to the song Aja, I have seen at least one comment about the song Aja, (which is also the name of the album) that mentioned Aja as a song you might enjoy. That's also the album you like. I believe Aja is the closet song that is strictly contemporary or smoothe Jazz. I also believe it might become your Steely Dan's favorite song. It's one of my two favorite.
Cure-obsessed 15-year old me was not a fan. Thirty years later, I'm a solid Steely Dan Man...
For me the hidden jem from their first album is "Fire In The Hole".
It's nothing like this little "Pop" tune.
The Dan has an excellent live album out....'Alive in America' I think As I remember, 'Josie' is great here, and 'Babylon Sisters'.....'Third World Man'.....any of these would be good.
A good one by Steely Dan is 'Kings'
Easily their best album and possibly their best song in a long long career.
Keyboard needs to make a comeback. It’s been missing from rock for so long.
Anything by Steely Dan is better than anything else
❤️❤️❤️
David Palmer on lead vocal
❤😊
It's really an amazing song. I'm a big fan of SD, though. It's just perfect.
Check midnight cruiser out!
That almost
could have been a eagles song
Steely Dan is not one man. It is the name of a band of various artists, two of whom were at the helm.
Dirty work on the day Bob Saget died, wild coincidence
Hey Nineteen Bodhisattva Loan Me a Dime (with a guest appearance by Duane Allman on guitar) Do It Again
It's been a while since you've done any Gino Vannelli, how about checking out Where Am I Going by Gino.
Yo Chod, please check out a band called Leprous -The sky is red (drum playthrough) it will blow your mind. Singer is not from this world. Drummer is off the chain good. Progressive rock/metal from Norway.
Early Dan
You haven't done anything from The Katy Lied album, an album which critic Joe S. Harrington called the best album of all time.
You can take every Steely Dan song, put it in a jar, and take one out, and it would be a good one. Same with Lynyrd Skynyrd.
A few song you really got to react to are the live version of "Abacab" by Genesis from 1987 and the live version of "Calling Elvis" by Dire Straits from 1992, both songs with great drumming

Your video recording was a little wonky there in the middle.
It was like we had a claymation Chod! 😆
I'm glad it wasn't my eyes @ @
It's actually my least favorite Dan song although it has a certain pleasantries despite its sad subject, wishing Donald Fagen had sung it. He would've sung it with more irony.
This was off their first album when they had another vocalist. For years I thought this was someone like Cat Stevens or a singer/songwriter type. It sounds nothing to me like what I think of as a Steely Dan song.
Not the best Steely Dan choice.
How about green earring and black cow, have you done those yet?
David Palmer on lead vocals. He sucked. The record company wanted him, not Donald and Walter. He did not last very long, thank goodness.
LOL…..a person with strong opinions! I completely disagree. 😁
This is one of the few Steely Dan songs that is just average for me. It can't touch their other hits.
