Effective November 1, 2023, there is a $50 daily fee to dig at the Red October 2 Claim. Currently, the Claim is closed until Sometime in May 2024 due to the snow.
My friend went there with an invitation to join the owner and do some digging. Ended up doing some trading and scored a couple fist sized chunks and boy howdy does it light up. He said the vein they were in was at least six inches wide and went straight up from where they were standing. Guess a bunch was mined that day what with the owner having the needed tools. That clear orange is gorgeous.
Nice video of the digging, the pit and the product. Thanks for your work. I dug there in late August, working on that lower vein you first showed. Even with a heavy hammer, the basalt is almost unyielding. That hole is a lot deeper than I left it.
I was told that I got a lot of material out of that hole. The lady after me worked like crazy and hardly got anything. I sat and studies the rock before I started removing it and well it worked. I am looking forward into going back.
for all you hounders out there....I used to know a guy who worked in the Angell Bros quarry on the outskirts of Portland (on the way to Scappoose, Hwy 30). He pulled 100's of lbs of Orange, red and yellow opal out of that quarry and literally lined his entire front yard in it. If anyone could get access, there is a tin of that stuff there. Also, it came out in very large chunks
@@1JawsJr 100% positive. Im a jeweler and a flint knapper, so I know opal material. I made some beautiful arrowheads out of it. No agate ever flaked like that. We always called it Honey Opal and it ranges from totally translucent to a kind of spun honey look that is more opaque. If you like, I can send you pictures. Some was even a deep brown.
That is excellent that one, you watched it for school and two, you loved it. Thank you!!! It was so much fun out there digging this Oregon Fire Opal. I have another video of my second trip as well as one showing a closer look of this incredibly beautiful material.
Oregon is the best when it comes to rock hunting. I found a 65 pound carnelian agate. It is apparently the largest stone of its kind online. youtube Large Giant Carnelian Agate!!!
1JawsJr , I'm just curious, because they say that the portion which does not can't fire or color flash isn't considered the same as the portion which does. I love the colors and all types of Opal. I have several specimens of different areas
Was wondering is there any chance I might purchase a few decent size stones of oregon fire opal off you? I'd be more than happy to do an exchange of the good specimens california has to offer.
Roght now I am not in the market for trading and selling. I am hanging on to everything I collect until the Mrs Jaws Jr and I decides on which direction we go after we build our rock shed. Jamie Lant is the claim owner and you might want to contact him directly through Facebook.
@@1JawsJr I understand I too have big dreams to create something wonderful with my stones. I've been planning out and researching all kinds of creative ok outlets. Its wonderful you and the misses do this together I'm also fortunate to have a gemologist like myself to explore with god bless.
@@1JawsJr oh no! Ok thanks for the heads up. I didn't even think to ask him if it became popular. Well I'm only going to be able to go maybe once so now I have to plan accordingly. Lol.
It is, but the claim is closed until may due to Snow. There will be a daily fee of $50 per person and if there is power equipment, an additional fee of $50.
We have had some cabbed into jewelery. It can be careful cabbed into different shapes. There is no rainbow flash in this. Oh we also had one piece cleaned, up polished and wire wrapped.

This is so awesome 😎 thanks for sharing
That is an awesome looking rock
Beautiful opal! It is such a glass-like, fragile stone. I’m glad you got such large pieces!
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow, look at the colour in those pieces! Just gorgeous mate!
The fire opal is so beautiful.
Great find. Makes me want to get my hands dirty just watching
nice to meet another local rockhound. that's some gorgeous stuff!
Looked like fun. Congratulations on your discoveries.

1JawsJr looks like a slide hammer or a jack hammer would be handy up there.
That Opal has some beautiful orange color.

Are you sure it was opal? That quarry was known for Agates...

An anthill at work
Opal is one of my favorites! How would you tell the difference between one of these an orange agate? Thanks for the video!
goooooooooooood
Jamie is such a great person!!
is there a way I could get in contact with him to ask for permission to do a little mining?
Terrapin Rocks to get in touch with Jamie Lant
Ecxelente muy buen opalo
I was up there two weeks ago
did any of the specimens have fire or were they just red, orange and yellow common Opal?
This is not common opal according to the claim owner. Oregon Fire Opal is through out this small area known as Juniper Mountain.
1JawsJr , I'm just curious, because they say that the portion which does not can't fire or color flash isn't considered the same as the portion which does.
I love the colors and all types of Opal.

Dam there beautiful
Would be great to have links to the locations
What is this place?
Hi can anyone tell me which is the best friendly tire road to get to Plush, Oregon from Salem, Oregon? I need all the help I can get. Thank guys.
Going to plush is no problem, going to the sunstone area is the issue.. heavily washboard roads... No smooth road in there.

any suggestions on places to hunt opal near Rogue River? medford/grants pass area?
None, most Opal is further East...
I think I found wood Opal at agate lake
Beatifule opal
That's it true money friend's this is one of my hobby friends
how do I get to the mine? do they have a webpage?
You will have to contact the claim owner/operator. In Facebook, you can look in NW Rockhounds and with some time, you will find it. :-)
Hey I live in bend, where is this?
Down in Lake County. You can contact the claim owner for access. He has a few videos here in youtube on the claim.
Try dental picks. It would allow finer work, with less breakage.
Try using a feather and wedge like the Egyptian’s

I live in Grants pass is this mine ope all uear ? I would like to go pnd some rocks out :)
It is not open all year. It will re-open when the roads are clear of snow.
yeah I live n Grants pass. wondering where we could mine it near Rogue river maybe idk Im no expert just hobbiest
I'll be there soon! When were you there last?
I was there last in September. It is my understanding that the pits have grown substantially since then.

I'm in salem, where can I find oaks near me?
Nothing around Salem in the way of Opal.... We go to "South Central Oregon"
Is this stuff worth anything?
It is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Not sure on a true market value, maybe the claim owner would know.
That's amazing I'm in Oregon too wish I could be there i got around 2000 different gemstones but nothing like that
How do you get permission. To go there.
Contact the claim owner. Do not claim jump.

Osu!
Go Beavs!!!
sucks...... haha just messing older bro was a osu grad
I can take it, look how the football team has performed. Have to have thick skin to be a Beavers fan.
How about using a mason drill instead of a hammer.
Lack of electricity.
Looks like fun and boring at the same time
To some, it might be boring, to some it might be dirty, to some it might be fun. To me, it was an incredible experience.
If it had fire it would be a lot more interesting
Oregon Fire Opal from this claim does not have the flashes of fire that you are looking for that is found in other opals.
WHAT DO YOU DO WITH IT? CAN IT BE CUT?? ANY RAINBOW TO THE STONE??? ANY VALUE???
We have had some cabbed into jewelery. It can be careful cabbed into different shapes. There is no rainbow flash in this. Oh we also had one piece cleaned, up polished and wire wrapped.
If it wasnt in a vain like that it looks like Amber
obsidian , not opal ,look at australian or african opal , totally different
What are you talking about? This is Fire Opal, there are several fire opal mines here. It is not Obsidian.
Wear gloves
why wear gloves? cannot feel anything.
