    I am thankful for Hannah's comments on women and autism. I had to take my daughter to a second evaluation before she was believed and diagnosed. Being female, high IQ and competently verbal seems to be a disqualifier for ASD, yet she is affected by it very much in her private and public life on a daily basis. Thank you Hannah.

      It feels like the same is true with ADHD in women. The diagnosis only happens in little boys because their behavior was more disruptive so the diagnosis was based on that observable behavior. In girl only the individual suffers more often and develops coping mechanisms so decades fly by. It feels like at 40 half of my women friends are getting ASD or ADHD diagnoses or both. The neurodivergence and executive functioning issues were there from the start but motherhood coupled with the Pandemic seemed to have really brought it to the forefront. At least that is my observation.

    • @michaeltownsend429
      @michaeltownsend429 Před rokem

      Yes to all of this! I flew under the radar as ADHD and Autistic for 45 years. I identified both, ensuring that I measured myself against all of the criteria (all of the criterion? 🤷🏻‍♂️) and then self-advocated. I’m fortunate that I had, probably out of related necessity, surrounded myself with medical and allied health professionals that I could ‘partner’ with - who would genuinely listen to my clinical self-observations. Even then, they all expressed scepticism BUT they listened to my story and did not decline to refer me on to others that would help to assess what I was putting out there.
      Lo and behold… ADHD dual diagnoses, and Autistic with level 2 support requirements, confirmed by a professor of clinical psychology and a speech pathologist.
      So why did nobody EVER pick up on a very serious medical condition, and atypicality in thinking, learning, perceiving and relating, all of which combining to adversely affect my outcomes, daily?
      The answer is this: I present ADHD and as an Autistic human in *exquisitely* feminine ways… despite being a boy, then young man, and now middle-aged man.
      Internalising…
      Camouflaging…
      Coping… until the elaborate, ritualised workarounds ceased to be sufficiently effective, and I was exhausted by them… and until the camouflage became tattered and threadbare… and I was exhausted by it…
      Crisis.
      Pretty typical.
      I love being Autistic… and being permitted to be Autistic! Wonderful.
      ADHD can get in the bin though. Horrible illness.

    I get that too! I was actually told that I couldn't be autistic because I can have a conversation, because I have children, because I am too imaginative, and because I don't "look" autistic. I too didn't get my diagnosis for ADHD/ASD until nearly 40. I was just the shy, weird, sensitive, awkward, artsy, super-smart girl obsessed with fantasy and cats and Pikachu, also raised in an extremely conservative Christian household, who grew up to be a queer, feminist, tattooed witch who is still obsessed with fantasy and cats and Pikachu. I like being autistic though. The hardest part isn't really my autism, it's trying to navigate a world that was made for and is filled with allistics (that's non-autistic people for those who don't know).

      I occasionally find creative ways of relating how it is to be Autistic in the world to people. A recent one was a description to a mate who is an IT specialist. I told him it’s like having to function in a world that isn’t formatted for my operating system. It’s Windows and I’m Linux! There is bound to be glitchy behaviour like conflicts, runtime errors, crashes, hangs etc… but when I’m permitted to run in my environment I’m amazing - different, not less.

When I was younger they basically refused to diagnose me with anything but anxiety, and most of my social awkwardness was seen as natural female shyness, but I wasn't shy. I just did not understand, and I was struggling. When I got fatter and older and I had a son who was diagnosed ADHD and autistic, that's when I finally was able to get the treatment I needed. I enjoyed Hannah's comedy special very much. She is brilliant. While respecting her acknowledgment of an autism diagnosis, my take-away from everything about her and her comedy is that she is too intelligent for most of us to understand what she is trying to say. I don't really know what autism or string theory means but I do know Hannah's humor is really just intelligent and honest.

      I'm autistic and ADHD, as well, and I disagree with you. Autism and ADHD are processing disorders. They don't correlate to IQ. Some folks with these conditions have hyperfixations that lead to discoveries and expertise in specific areas, but this isn't the case for all. Additionally, teaching, conveying complex concepts in simple language, is a skill. Those of us with autism (particularly if we're female) have to spend a lot of time thinking about how we portray ourselves and our ideas in order to not be seen as arrogant. I think that's one reason that autism is often not diagnosed in little girls; we're taught to mask how we feel, anyway. Autistic girls just work at it a bit harder than the others.

    Nanette is one of, if not the, best comedy specials I’ve ever seen. It was funny and disarming and jarring. It was poignant and smart, and it was also simultaneously a love letter and a farewell to comedy that originated from a place of pain but became a source of healing, not just for Hannah but for members of her audience that could relate to her experience. Laughter is after all one of the best medicines, a panacea for the soul, and such an amazing vehicle to speak, inform, and teach, precisely because it is disarming and because mirth and laughter are universal emotions and languages that connect not just the audience to the performer, but to each other. It turned Hannah for me from a complete unknown to my favorite comic. I’m so thrilled for her subsequent success. She deserves every bit of it, and I await with excitement everything she makes. The best way to approach Nanette is with zero knowledge or expectation for full effect, which is harder now because of its fame, but I really can’t recommend it enough.
